SERIES QUICK NOTES
- Minnesota swept the regular season series over the Mercury this season, as the
two teams played all three games within the Mercury’s first eight games of 2016
- This is the fourth-straight season that the Lynx and the Mercury have faced each
other for a trip to the WNBA Final and fifth time in the past six seasons
- The Mercury (2007, 2009, 2014) and Lynx (2011, 2013, 2015) have combined to
win six of the last nine WNBA titles
- Phoenix snapped a ten-game regular season losing streak against Minnesota
on June 15, 2014 at Target Center (80-72). The Mercury went 3-1 against the
Lynx that season.
- Should a Game 4 be necessary, the game will be played at Grand Canyon
University in Phoenix
- Minnesota took Game's 1 and 2 in Minnesota handing the Mercury its first
two losses of this year's playoffs. Diana Taurasi scored a team-high 25 points,

BEST FOR LAST: In the Mercury’s 16 wins this season,
Phoenix outscored its opponents, 329-255, in the final
quarter of play. The Mercury has shot 36.9 percent
(24-of-65) from three-point range during that time
and converted on 83 of its 93 free throw attempts.

THE SECOND SEASON: The Phoenix Mercury hold
an all-time postseason record of 34-25 (.576).....the
Mercury is one of five teams in WNBA history with
30 or more playoff wins and one-of-four teams in
WNBA history with three or more championships
(Houston, 4; Tulsa/Detroit, 3; Minnesota, 3).....
Phoenix qualified for the postseson for the 11th
time this season and is one of five WNBA franchises
with 10 or more playoff appearances.
DT 7K: Diana Taurasi became just the third player in
WNBA history to score 7,000 career points during
the June 24 game in Washington. Taurasi reached
the milestone on a 30-foot three-pointer with 1:09
remaining in the third quarter. Not only did she reach
the 7,000 point barrier, but she became the fastest
player ever to surpass it, doing so in 348 career games
(Tina Thompson reached it in 460 games and Tamika
Catching reached it in 428 games). Neither Maya
Moore or Elena Delle Donne, two of the league's
most prolific scorers, are on pace to reach 7,000
career points in fewer games than Taurasi. Diana
finished with 27 points in the game, as the Mercury
topped the Mystics 91-79.
MERCURY OLYMPIANS: Phoenix showcased a
WNBA-high six players (Taurasi-USA, Griner-USA,
Taylor-Australia,
Petrovic-Serbia,
Xargay-Spain,
Harding-Belarus) in this year's Rio Olympics, bringing
back a combined four medals. Along with Sue Bird and
Tamika Catchings, Taurasi won her fourth consecutive
gold medal, joining Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie as
the only four-time gold medalists in the event in our
nation's history. Taurasi led the Americans in scoring
(15.6 ppg) and shot a staggering 57.9 percent (33-of57) from the three-point line over USA's eight games.
She broke American record in three-point field goals
made in a single game (6) and a single Olympics (33).
Griner played in her first Olympics this year, averaging

9.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She recorded
a double-double against China on August 14, scoring
18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Also in their
first Olympics were Petrovic and Xargay. Petrovic
scored in double-figures in all eight games, leading
bronze-medalist Serbia to its first Olympic medal
in women's basketball. Xargay, and silver-medalist
Spain, also won their first Olympic medal in women's
basketball. Xargay averaged 10.7 points in a reserve
role for Spain and notched four double-figure scoring
performances in Rio, including 12 points in the gold
medal game against USA. Taylor's final Olympics
ended in an upset loss to Serbia in the quarterfinals.
The Mercury forward helped lead Australia to a
perfect 5-0 record in group play and posted a 31-point
performance against France on August 9. It was the
most points an Australian women's basketball player
had scored since Lauren Jackson's 30 points in the
2008 Olympics. Depsite not making it out of group
play, Harding led Belarus in scoring (13.9 ppg) and
assists (5.0 apg). She ranked third in the Rio Games
in free throw shooting, knocking down 96.3 percent
(26-of-27) from the charity stripe.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Mercury has posted a
39-11 home record over the past two seasons, and is
24-5 against Western Conference opponents on its
home court during that time.
MILESTONES: Penny Taylor recorded her 1,000thcareer assist in the Mercury's win over San Antonio
on Thursday, June 7, becoming just the 20th player
in WNBA history to do so. Diana Taurasi reached
7,000 career points, becoming only third player to
do so. She reached the 7,000 point barrier in 348
career games, becoming the fastest player to do so.
Candice Dupree scored her 5,000th-career point in
the Mercury win vs. Dallas on August 26, becoming
just the 17th WNBA player to reach such milestone.
FANTASTIC FIVE: The Mercury is 37-10 overall,
and 23-4 on its home court, in regular season and
postseason play with the starting lineup of Diana
Taurasi, Penny Taylor, Brittney Griner, DeWanna
Bonner and Candice Dupree. Four of the 10 overall
losses have come against the Minnesota Lynx.
SCORING FRENZY: The Mercury became the first
team since 2011 (Atlanta) to have 5+ players score
15+ points in a game in Phoenix's 99-90 win over
Connecticut on May 31 (Griner-21, Taurasi-19,
Taylor-16, Bonner-15, Dupree-15).

MOVING UP THE CHARTS: After scoring 13 points at
Minnesota on May 14, Penny Taylor moved into 21stplace on the WNBA all-time scoring list, surpassing
Sophia Young-Malcom. Brittney Griner moved into
9th-place on the WNBA all-time blocks list at Atlanta
on on Sept. 6, Candace Parker
RECORDS SET VS DALLAS: The Mercury fell to Dallas,
117-111, on June 18 in a triple-overtime thriller. The
following WNBA records were set during the game:
Points by a sub: DeWanna Bonner came off the bench for the
Mercury to score 38 points in the game. Her 38 points were
the most points scored by a sub in a WNBA game (previous
was 36 by Angel McCoughtry on 7/31/11
Team fouls in a game: The Mercury was called for 42 total
fouls in the game, which stands as the most fouls called on a
team in WNBA history...Previous was 38 on 6/18/00
Disqualifications: Four Mercury players were disqualified after
picking up six fouls. It ties for the most DQ's by a team in a
game...Ties the four DQ's from game on 8/5/06
Combined free throws makes and attempts: Dallas and Phoenix combined to shoot 69-of-86 from the free throw game.
The 69-made free throws is the most combined made free
throws by two teams in a game in WNBA history (previous
was 67 on 7/12/08)...The 86-combined free throw attempts is
the fourth-most combined free throw attempts in a game in
league history (most is 88, which has happened twice)
Combined fouls: Dallas and Phoenix were whistled for a combined 68-total fouls, which ranks third-most in WNBA history
for combined fouls in a game between the two teams (most is
70, which has happened twice)
Combined score: Dallas and Phoenix combined to score 228
total points in the game, which ranks as the second-highest
scoring game in league history (most is 251 on 7/24/10 - PHX
vs. MIN). Five of the six highest scoring WNBA games features
Phoenix as one of the two teams.
Combined FGA: Dallas and Phoenix combined to total 194
shot attempts in the game, which ranks second most all-time
in WNBA history (most is 198 on 7/14/10 - PHX vs. SEA).
OVERSEAS SUCCESS: The Mercury was well
represented overseas this past offseason, particularly
in the EuroLeague. Three of the four teams in the
EuroLeague Final Four featured at least one Mercury
player on it, as Sonja Petrovic played for ZVVZ USK
Praha, DeWanna Bonner played for Nadezhda
Orenburg and Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi
played for UMMC Ekaterinburg, who won the
EuroLeague and Russian League Titles.
TROPHY CASE: The Mercury won their third WNBA
Championship in 2014 and became the third
franchise in the 19-year history of the league with
three or more championships.....the Houston Comets
(1997, 1998, 1999, 2000) and Detroit Shock (now
Dallas, previously Tulsa) (2003, 2006, 2008) are the
other two. Minnesota joined the list last season
COACHING STAFF: Mercury head coach Sandy
Brondello returns for her third year with the Mercury.....
Brondello’s option for the 2016 season was picked
up on May 21, 2015.....Brondello is assisted by
Julie Hairgrove (12th season) and Todd Troxel (3rd
season).....Brondello has a career record of 63-39 as
head coach in the WNBA and a 49-19 record with

NBA was Shawn Bradley (1993-94 to 1996-97)...
She also became the 11th player in WNBA history
to record 400 career blocks on 9/2 at Connecticut...

fastest player to reach 400 career blocks. Manute
Bol, David Robinson and Mark Eaton are the only

Sandy Brondello

Veteran WNBA player, coach and former Australian Olympian Sandy
Brondello (braun-DELL-oh) was named the ninth head coach in franchise history
on November 15, 2013. Brondello also serves as the team’s vice president of
player personnel. On May 21, 2015, the Mercury exercised the option on her
contract for the 2016 season.
Known for her intense preparation for each opponent, Brondello has
compiled an overall record of 49-19 in her first two seasons with the Mercury,
ranking her third on the all-time wins list as a Mercury coach. She was named
ther 2014 WNBA Coach of the Year marking the first time a Mercury coach
picked up the honor. She led the team to a WNBA regular season-record 29
wins and capped the season with a WNBA Championship. An 11-year veteran of the WNBA coaching ranks, Brondello has been
affiliated with the league for 17 of the league’s 20 seasons, including her time as a player. A proven
winner internationally and in the WNBA, her 11 total years as an assistant coach and head coach
have featured eight playoff appearances, including five conference finals berths, the 2014 WNBA
Championship and a spot in the 2008 WNBA Finals. Brondello joins the Mercury after serving as
lead assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks (2011WNBA Head Coaching Record
13) under 2012 WNBA Coach of the Year Carol Ross.

Ekaterinburg. Now the Mercury’s head of player personnel, Phoenix’s pro scouting efforts are buoyed
by Brondello’s knowledge of and exposure to overseas talent.
Brondello finished a stellar 17-year professional playing career with a five-year run in the WNBA
in which she played for Detroit (1998-99), Miami (2001-02) and Seattle (2003), and was named a
1999 WNBA All-Star. She began her career with the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) in
Australia (1986-96), and was named the league MVP in 1995. The 5-7 guard was a 10-time German
Cup champion while playing with BTV Wuppertal (1992-2002), a three-time European Cup All-Star
selection (1994, 1996, 1997), and the 1996 European Cup MVP when she led her team to the title.
An 18-year member of the Australian National Team, Brondello is a four-time Olympian, a twotime silver medalist (2000, 2004) and was named the 1992 Australian International Player of the Year.
In her time with the national team, she was a teammate of Mercury forward Penny Taylor.
Brondello is married to Olaf Lange, who is the head coach of UMMC Ekaterinburg, and the couple
has two children, Brody and Jayda.
