IT’S SMEI AKRON’S
40TH ANNIVERSARY
FROM THE PRESIDENT ...
Nancy Bird
2008 marks the 40th anniversary of
Sales and Marketing Executives International.
President, SMEI of Akron
To help celebrate, here’s 40 reasons why our SMEI Akron membership is so valuable:
In today’s corporate world, leadership remains key during challenging financial times and changing
sales & marketing landscapes. However, what makes
a good leader? What characteristics distinguish the
good leader from the great leader? Who will be able to
guide an organization through transition and change?
As Max Dupree states: “Leadership is an Art”.

PSE has been chartered on over 137 campuses nationwide, and
currently has 50 active chapters from Hawaii to New York.
There are many ways SMEI members can help PSE. PSE is currently looking for internship opportunities, or projects for them
to work on. Each year PSE picks a couple of projects for their
team to complete. This is an affordable way for your company to
get either some project research, marketing ideas or general
thoughts of your product done. In addition, PSE has regular
meetings where they have speakers come from different industries. PSE has invited SMEI members to attend these meetings
and explain their business and industry. If anyone has internship opportunities, projects, or would like to speak at one of
their meetings, please contact Director of Youth Activities, Jim
Borrieci at [email protected] or 330.493.8866.

Aerobics” – presented by Dave Derby of Derby Marketing and
Kristie VanAuken, Director Marketing & Communications for the
Akron Canton Airport.
Continued
Dave is an enthusiastic, open-minded creative leader with a real passion for discovering what is truly inventive and a variety
of fortune 500 companies have benefited
from Dave’s breakthrough concepts,
including General Motors, Proctor and
Gamble, Anheuser Busch and General
Mills.
You’ll walk away with these gems:
•Define your goals
•Tighten your strategy
•Shape your message!
•Key strengths each of us can apply immediately to our businesses. Learn how the Akron Canton Airport built its strong
brand!
More important, though, than the respect
Dave Derby
his work has garnered, are the results his

sales for the advertised products. An ad
program for Dirt Devil increased their sales by 44%, propelling
them past Eureka to capture the #2 position in the category. An
integrated, repositioning campaign for the Akron-Canton Airport,
contributed to the highest passenger traffic in its 40 year history.
Kristie joined the airport staff in 1996. She has a Bachelor of Arts
degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas and a Masters of
Public Administration from Western Michigan University. Her
major responsibilities include all airport marketing, communications and air service development initiatives. Under her leadership,
the airport has tripled airport passengers and nonstop routes.
Additionally, the airport’s TV commercials featuring “punch
dummy” won best of show at the Akron Addys in 2005.
Most recently, Dave’s creative leadership and brand building expertise has produced dramatic results for University Hospitals Health
System/Geauga Medical Center, Prudential DeHoff Realtors,
Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association and St.Mary’s Health
System.
Prior to joining the airport, Kristie worked for the Greater Akron
Chamber and the State of Michigan, International Affairs division.

in Northeast Ohio in 2005

MEMBER TESTIMONIAL
“The Akron SMEI membership allows professionals such as myself a great venue for meeting
new people and learning from best practice sharing.
Membership renewal makes great sense to me and my professional goals. The Akron group
seems to be expanding. I’ve already hired one of The University of Akron PSE (Pi Sigma
Epsilon) members, and am pleased that a founding SMEI principle is the coaching/mentoring
of young professionals.
David Cochran
Vice President-Special
Services; Roadway
Allow me to give this testimony. Akron SMEI membership provides the value of hearing great
leadership experiences, such as Maxine Clark, CEO, Build-a-Bear Corporation, and others, who
provide both educational perspectives as well as motivational experiences for sales and marketing professionals.”
