Hosted in Janet and Teddy Serure's backyard, the money raised by the tournament was donated to Mattan Basseter. With 24 teams and 120 players, a second court was set up at the home of Shula and David Dayan. Founded and led by Aslan Bawabeh, the nonprofit organization ensures that, regardless of financial concerns, every child in the New York Sephardic Jewish community is provided with a Jewish education. It has also extended its generosity to help needy families put food on their tables. The case specialists return home every night to lines of people, and work with them R on a one-on-one basis. A core committee of dodgeball coordinators included Jack Anteby, Joe Mansour, Jack Serure, Leon Sultan and Joey Tabush. Many girls helped cook the food and there were plenty of drinks to go around. The bleachers were filled and the games were enthralling to watch, as photographer Morris Gindi snapped away. It all began three summers ago sometime after the movie Dodgeball was released. Tabush recalls that a few of the guys were playing dodgeball on the beach and brainstormed about making a dodgeball tournament. The idea took off from there and was a success from the start. #20 p 521-552.qxd 12/27/2007 6:54 PM Page 523 NEW ““N EW”” Pa trici a G reen 18th ANNIVERSARY IMAGE JANUARY 2008 523 #20 p 521-552.qxd 12/27/2007 I M A G E 6:54 PM W O R K S Page 524 W I T H O R G A N I Z A T I O N S T O B E N E F I T T H E C O M M U N I T Y Kids for Kindness Event to Help Israel ommunity kids gathered to help pack bags for Israeli youth in Kiryat Shemona, located in the northern part of Israel. The event, “Kids for Kindness,” was a huge success, with the kids making around 1,100 bags. The day's mission was for kids to help kids. It was about children connecting with children and giving them the opportunity not only to help others, but to know they can do so in the future. “Kids for Kindness” was mainly organized by Mindy Jerome, the development and marketing coordinator at Barkai Yeshivah, and Alissa Shams, director of programming at the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue in New York City. Alan Shamah helped with collecting items to distribute, and David Braha, a seventh grader in Hillel Yeshiva, arranged the candy sale with classmates. Each community school participated in the event, along with the Sephardic Community Center (SCC) and Jewish Community Center (JCC). School addresses were placed in the bags so that the kids could communicate with one another, regardless of the country in which they live. 524 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY C The reason behind the program seems simple— coordinators wanted to find something that involves unity. “Unity gives us strength, and I wanted to pass that on to the children in Israel,” said Ms. Jerome. “That's why I wanted every organization here that really supports Israel.” Throughout the year, people have been supporting Israel, like Natalie and Lenore Mizrachi, who had people packing hundreds of boxes for Gush Katif. Kids as young as six were packing bags, and could see from the contents of the bags that the Israeli kids really don't have anything. People agreed that after participating in the event, it's possible they gained more than the kids in Israel will gain. #20 p 521-552.qxd 12/27/2007 6:55 PM Lydia Eskenazi 305-785-0440 [email protected] LYDIAESKENAZ.COM Page 525 Harding Realty, Inc 9509 Harding Ave Surfside, FL 33154 Hardingrealty.com GREAT CONDO DEALS!!! There was food to purchase, as well as clothing and shoes to match our outfits. While some people were shopping, at Magen David Yeshivah, a special group of high school students visited The Sephardic Nursing Home on Cropsey Avenue. Not too long ago, a group of students gathered in Magen David High School's atrium for a trip. Armed with Metro cards for the brief bus ride, along with a sense of camaraderie, the students headed for the city bus—only to see that they just missed it. Undaunted, they chased it down, so that they could get to the nursing home before the end of the day. Although only one person caught the bus, when he explained the group's goal, the bus driver happily waited for the rest of the group. When the students arrived at the Sephardic Home, the group immediately started to talk to residents and wish them a good year. Students had the opportunity to visit with the elderly people at the home, some of whom 526 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY A are related to them. Residents and students shared stories with one another, and there was a feeling of celebration in the air. The atmosphere was one of appreciation for the wisdom and kindness these residents had contributed throughout their lives, and for the youthful enthusiasm that the MDY students exhibited. Mr. Andrew Leibowitz, Director of Student Life and coordinator of this trip, said it best: “It never ceases to amaze me as to just how special our students are. Their unique ability to make the residents feel good about themselves and look forward to a shana tova was evident by the smiles on their faces. I look forward to our continued visits throughout the year to the Sephardic Home.” It is by its youth that one can judge a community. The Magen David students who took time, at the end of a long day of school, to visit residents in the Sephardic Home, are a reflection of the values that are prevalent in our community and that have kept it strong. May it be Hashem's will that a year that begins with hesed will be a year full of hesed, from beginning to end. #20 p 521-552.qxd 12/27/2007 6:55 PM Page 527 #20 p 521-552.qxd 12/27/2007 I M A G E 6:55 PM W O R K S Page 528 W I T H O R G A N I Z A T I O N S T O B E N E F I T T H E C O M M U N I T Y The Ladies Angel Network Helps Community Women Irwin Dayan, Executive Director of SAF Marie Torgueman, Esther Anzaroot, Shelly Nahmoud, Sarit Botton, Sarah Cheney, (top row:) Michele Terzi, Yvette Sutton and Joanne Grazi at the welcome booth 528 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY Beth Schoenfeld, Co-Founder of Ladies Who Launch he Ladies Angel Network, part of the Sephardic Angel Fund, held their first annual event to help the women of our community realize their dreams of becoming business owners. A woman’s career must fit in with her life. Atara Malach, noted author, lecturer, psychotherapist and keynote speaker of the day, conveyed the message that it's our job to keep all of our responsibilities in perspective while we step out to pursue our career goals. The 300 women who attended the event want to do it all. They want to try everything they've ever dreamed of and be the person about whom it is said, “I don't know how she does it!” They want to be successful in business— but that’s not enough. Their need to merge the responsibility of taking care of clients, families and themselves is what makes their multi-tasking lives so uniquely challenging. The concept for the Ladies Angel Network arose through The Sephardic Angel Fund's experiences with T Norma Cohen and Joyce Silverman at the Creative Services Booth female clients. They've realized that women in business have very different needs than men and wanted to tailor an Angel experience that specifically addresses those concerns. Working hand-in-hand with Ladies Who Launch, a remarkable organization dedicated to helping women start and expand their businesses and creative ventures, they've tapped the resources that are so important to the talented women of our community. Those of us who are in careers that we love, understand the feeling of excitement that arises when we think about how we made our dreams come true. The women of our community have a lot of ideas and motivation. With the support of the Angel Fund and Ladies Who Launch, their dreams become reality. It is apparent by the enormous turnout that many women feel the need to get out in the workplace, fulfill dreams and pursue professions. To learn more about it, visit www.SephardicAngelFund.org. The Tournament was held at the luxurious Diplomat Country Club in nearby Turnberry Florida. We are back for a second round this year on January 22, 2008, again at the Diplomat. The Scholarship Fund was originated in 2006 and the proceeds are being used to help offset the tuition of those who are unable to afford to pay full tuition in the Yeshiva. David Mizrahi A”H who was a man known to all in the community for his generosity was a founding father of Yeshivat Keter Torah, and sat on its Board of Trustees. Last year’s event, which was sponsored by Avi and Jennifer Sakkal in honor of their parents, raised a substantial amount of money for the Scholarship Fund. A.J. Gindi, who was the director of the event, said, “We were extremely satisfied with the first year’s turn out, 530 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY D David and Susan Cohen and we expect to at least double it in next year's tournament. There was a full day of golf plus an elaborate dinner and awards ceremony at the new Sarah's Tent restaurant. Davy would have been very proud.” Eddie Shacalo and Joseph Haber The winner of the Ladies Calloway Tournament was Frieda Sutton who ended up with a score of 74. In the men’s division it was neck and neck until the last hole, and ended in a tie between Mitchell Gemal and Eddie Fallas, who both shot a beautiful 93. Mitchell, who also assisted in the event said, “What a beautiful day for golf, everyone had a great time and I love that trophy!” Although there was no winner of the $20,000 ‘hole in one contest’ sponsored by Rothstein Asset Management, there were a few close calls. Other winners were Moe Suede for the longest shot, Irene Gindi for closest to the pin, Linda Maleh for straightest drive and Isaac Ades was the Mens Calloway winner with a score of 73. Not only did she teach us that our family always comes first, but to appreciate and cherish everything about them. I saw the way she took care of her parents, and I hope I can give that back to my own. It is evident she does everything with so much love and care and that, in itself, means so much. was willing to take it (which wasn't very often), we would send it with them. For me, I have always felt a great sense of satisfaction because I know how lucky I am to have a mother who instills in me such wonderful midot. Even now that I'm married with my own place, I'm constantly going through closets and drawers and filling bags to put in the car. When I was younger, and even now, there is never much time that goes by when we don't have something to drop off at Bikur Holim. It's always on our errand list! I love my mother and I'm grateful for everything she has and continues to teach me. Shabbat, etc. Even though my sister and I now live in NJ, and my mom is still in Brooklyn, we make it our business to see her as often as we can. We talk at least twice a day, and there isn't a holiday that passes that we aren't together. “Reunited,” as my mother would say. Even if it is an ordinary Shabbat, and my parents happen to be over, I must invite my sister and her family, because otherwise, it just wouldn't feel right! This is such a wonderful trait that I learned from her and I hope to instill this in my own children as well. Mother Vivian Ben Dayan Daughter Rachel Braca As I look back and recall some of life's lessons from my amazing mother, Vivian Ben Dayan, nothing stands out more to me than Mommy's generosity. I used to, sometimes, be embarrassed by my mom. She is the type of person who would open the sun roof, blast her music and sing as loud as she could in the middle of a snow storm. And she did this many times, as we would duck in the back seat and hope we wouldn't see any of our friends. For school P.T.A meetings, she would show up decked out in rhinestones, big rings, jeans, loud clothes, high heels and a cowboy hat. This is okay for New York, but I was raised in Ohio, Betty Crocker-land, where most moms stay at home, knitting and baking. Probably the place where all those corny sweaters started. The home of the infamous “tuna casserole.” All my friends thought she was cool. They used to think she was in a rock band because we went away so much and the way she Mother Frieda Kassin Daughter Sarah Sorscher My mother, in her quiet way, showed me how important family is. We will forever cherish the life lessons that our mother taught us, and continues to teach us today. everyday life, the beauty and importance of generosity in time and spirit. Through difficult times, my mother passed on to me her perseverance and resilience. She taught me to try my hardest to attain all I could but to be happy with what I had. My mother's real effect on me was far from deliberate. Therefore all of the amazing things she purposely taught me, like how to slice a roast, roll yebra (stuffed grape leaves) or organize a closet perfectly, pale in comparison to the personality she helped mold and the identity she solidified. The values she taught me were consistently instilled in me over the years through example, and today as an adult and as a mother, I'm proud to say that the person I am is a true reflection of the person my mother has always been. The most amazing reflection of my mother that I see in myself is also, I hope, my mother's greatest reward—my mother taught me how to love her. I was very young when my grandmother passed away, so I never saw whether or not they were affectionate, or whether they argued or bonded. And yet I understood over the years, the tremendous loss my mother felt without her own mother on a holiday, at a bar mitzvah, or simply going through pictures. Without ever saying it, my mother conveyed to me that in no uncertain terms, there is a bond like that between a mother and her daughter. I am indebted to my mother for so many things, and yet, none are as significant as the blessing of our relationship itself. Mother Iris Sankary Daughters Randi Shomer & Casey Rothschild Words can not express all the lessons that our mother, Iris Sankary, has taught us over the years, and which have made us the mothers that we are today. One of the most important values she instilled in us is that there is never enough that you could do for your children. No matter what the circumstances were, or how hard it was for her, she was there for us in every way possible. She taught us to always be grateful and appreciative of what you have, and we are. Our mother taught us to be organized and to always stick to a schedule so that our children’s lives will be structured as well. Arriving home everyday from school, my mother was always home to greet us with dinner waiting on the table, anxious to hear about our day. This is something that we now do in return for our own children. Another important lesson our mother taught us is to take pride in how you look, and you will always feel good about yourself. Always Mother Norma Rothschild Daughter Lauren Grunsfeld It's hard to express in a few words all of the things that my mother, Norma Rothschild, has taught me and given me. She gave me life and it seems almost absurd to try and qualify that with details. And yet my mother hasn't simply given me life, she has guided my identity. I'm fond of saying that I spent my whole life trying to be my own person, and that that person, unconsciously, unmistakably has turned out to be my mother. My mother imparted to me some of the greatest lessons of my life while she wasn't even trying and there are incredible parallels between my life and my mother's, although she never sat me down for lectures or heart-to-hearts. My mother taught me the value of family and the depth of even imperfect relationships. She showed me the immeasurable value of a good friend. It is very important to our mother that family traditions and Sephardic customs are continued in the generations to come. She also loved knitting outfits for dolls, and all of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren have one of her “famous” dolls. Another important lesson we learned from our mother is in the acts of hesed (kindness) she did. Given her busy schedule of raising her children, she still found time to help many immigrants get their citizenship. She would help them fill out the forms and help them with the language barrier. She also helped many people send their children to camp. In her later years, she, herself, loved going away for the summers to camp, and would come back with the many arts-and-crafts projects she loved to make. Our mother touched our lives in so many ways that we will always remember. Mother Sandy Sasson Daughters Laura Shammah & Michelle Esquenazi Our mother, Sandy Sasson, taught us many different, important lessons that we use in our everyday life. She mainly taught us to be independent, and to ‘make something of yourself.’ Our mother feels we should always follow our instincts, and to use our own judgement. By being ourselves, loving ourselves, and always doing the right thing, our mother instilled values that will encourage us in everything we do. We always feel we can go to her with any problem and she will always give us her undivided attention and honest opinion. She always supports our decisions. Mother Renee Shomer Daughter Karen Nahem In our community, our role models are our mothers. They teach us everything from the smallest, most basic necessity to the character traits that will define us later in life. Half the things we accomplish in our lives are because of them. We owe so much to them for centering their lives on teaching us to be good people who follow in the ways of Hashem. If we begin to think of everything our mothers have done for us, the list would be endless. We have to learn to appreciate and thank Hashem for giving us such wonderful role models. Renee Shomer & Karen Nahem Michelle Shrem & Amy Shrem My mother, Renee Shomer, is such an amazing, nice, caring woman. She has always taught me to be nice to others and not to judge anyone. She always went out of her way to help others in need, in a quiet way; sometimes, they didn’t even know she helped them. She always had such a positive outlook on life. She also showed me to raise my children with love. Besides installing the proper character traits in me, she has also taught me the necessities every woman needs to learn in their lives like cooking, cleaning and doing laundry. I am so grateful to have such an amazing mother and role model. If we begin to think of all the fantastic things our mothers have done for us and taught us, we would probably be thinking for days! The girls in my class laughed at my dress. When I got home, I was very upset, and when my mother found out why, she told me that I shouldn't let others around me change my opinion of something that I like. If I like something and my friends don't, that is okay with me. I have proudly worn that dress ever since, and even passed it down to my sister, who loves it as well. I will always stand proud because of my mother's wisdom. Mother Michelle Shrem Daughter Amy Shrem My mother has taught me many things over the course of my life. She truly is the greatest mother any child could ever wish for. Mother Rachel Zalta Son Freddie Zalta I remember the opening nights of our community plays. The curtain was due to come up at 8:00 pm sharp. We were all made up and excited; we heard some voices in the audience and took a peek to see who was there. The place was packed. But the faces and the voices that stood out were the faces of “the mothers.” Every performance, they would be the first to sit close to the stage, faces beaming with pride and excitement: the mothers club. One time, we didn't hear many voices in the audience so I took a peek to see if anyone was there. Besides one row of beaming faces, no one had shown up. I remember the disappointment I felt as I recited the lines and acted the role I had worked so hard to perfect. The girlfriend I was seeing couldn't come to see me that night, my friends had a basketball game to play and our usual adoring fans had decided it would be more fun to watch Dynasty on TV that night. But “the mothers” were there. They laughed, applauded and sighed on cue and stood up to salute us as we took our bows. A note to all those mothers: We have not forgotten that you were there for us and we Iris Yaron, Lauren Tobias & Randi Matsas were thrilled to see you. Happy times; marriages, births, bar-mitzvahs…Mothers will stand there and take it all upon themselves. They will make sure you are dressed, fed and smiling before they even get a chance to make the bed. They will compliment you even though you know you don't deserve it and you accept it all the same. Sad times; death, divorce and taxes; sometimes you really have nowhere to turn but homeward. Homeward—where mommy has food on the stove and that soup that can soothe your soul. Brothers and sisters all make the phone call; but it’s mommy who makes the trip to your front door to visit you, to let you know that she loves you and that you are not alone. My mother has stood beside me and has coached me my entire life. The love and the strength she has shown me cannot be repaid with roses or Pink Cadillacs. (Sorry Elvis). The support, the hand holding (no matter how tight), the looks of love, the looks of worry and the light that shines from her when she sees me walking through her door on a Saturday morning with my children. Even an artist as talented as my mother can never etch, paint or draw the look of beauty that comes from a mother’s eyes. My mother is my best friend. She taught me how to be a father and how to be a friend to my own children. I never forgot the first base- ball game she took me to in 1978 or so. We had collected the Dairylee coupons from the milk cartons and earned two tickets to Shea Stadium. We took the train there and it was the best game I ever went to. There are certain memories from childhood that have disappeared into the corner of my brain, underneath the old Mets jacket and the lost report cards from schools long ago. Some memories from childhood once in a while peek and show their faces just to remind me that my mother was always there for me, providing the comfort and love that I craved. On this day and every day until my time has run out, I will always salute my mother and strive to make her proud of me. Just to see her face glow the way she did when I was up on stage all those nights. Mothers Day should be celebrated each and every day. Every day, we should remember just who was there for us through thick and thin, and who will be there for us unconditionally and forever. In conclusion being a mother is a full time job and there aren’t enough words to reveal what motherhood entails. We can try to describe what our mother's have taught us over the years in a paragraph, but of course it won't fully portray all the hard work and many hours put in to molding who we ultimately became. We salute all mothers, Happy Mother's Day! #20 p 521-552.qxd 12/27/2007 6:57 PM Page 545 REAL ESTATE SOUTH FLORIDA Aventura’s Luxur y Leaders Serving the Community for Over Twenty Years ROBERTA & ALBERTO ESQUENAZI Marina Realty [email protected] (305) 332-4440 (305) 934-7111 HOT Deals in a COLD Market PORTO VITA SOUTH 2 bed 2½ bth 2390 sq. ft. With the arrival of Father’s Day, a number of community members have shared their thoughts on what they have learned from their fathers. For those whose fathers have passed away, Father’s Day can be an opportunity to think of the wonderful memories you have of them. For those lucky enough to still have a father to speak to and to seek guidance from, rejoice in your great fortune. To all our hard-working dads, Happy Father’s Day! Rachelle Matsas (father Moe Fallas A”H) The most important lesson I learned from my father, Moe Fallas A”H, was the importance of behaving properly in order to procure an impeccable reputation and a good name. His life was governed by the hebrew phrase, “tov shem me shemen tov,” which translates as, “a good name is better than good oil or wealth.” He behaved scrupulously in all his business and financial dealings, treated everyone from the most prestigious of rabbis to the man who shined his shoes at the train station with the utmost respect. Understanding the importance of being able to provide for a family with dignity, he either hired or found jobs for many men. He often lent money to those in need and provided shelter in our meager apartment to people from all over the world. Before his death he once told me, “I will never be counted among the wealthiest of men, but my children will all be proud to say Moe Fallas was my father.” Indeed this is so. 546 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY Moe Fallas A”H and Rachelle Matsas Freddy S. Zalta (father Sam Zalta) The earliest memory of my father is hearing the sound of him stirring his coffee in the kitchen. I would climb out of my crib and make my way to the kitchen to help him bring coffee to my mom who was still in bed. I also remember going with him to buy bagels on Sunday morning and him making English muffin pizzas on Saturday night while we watched Carol Burnett on TV or the time he played "box ball" with me when he just couldn't play baseball and my brothers had deserted me to be with their friends. I began working with my father straight out of high school; he was patient with me and tried to make me understand the importance of smiling and honesty. He would invite strangers in to offer them coffee on cold days and air conditioning on hot ones. I would be livid and could never understand why he would be so nice to people he didn't even know. It would get me crazy when I would see him standing in the doorway of the store waving to passersby with a smile and a prayer for a safe trip (ala'maak). Freddy and Sam Zalta I want you to know something: I was in Eilat, Israel, Los Angeles, Acapulco and the least likely places to run into people from this community and lo and behold, I would bump into someone who would ask me how my father was. “How do you know my father?” I would ask. They would then reply, "Every morning he says ala'maak to me as I walk by his store. A day is not complete without his smile and his words." The Zalta name has always been known as a name full of integrity; no conceitedness here, just a fact. But put “Sam” in front of it and you have the completion of a man that we should all strive to emulate. Listen, no one is perfect, but I can tell you that if you are going to live this life, live it the way my father, Sam Zalta, has lived it. With honesty, love and a smile. Leslie and Ben-Gurion Matsas 548 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY Allan and Jeremy Chernikoff Freddy and Saul Zalta Leslie Matsas (father Ben-G Gurion Matsas) Growing up, every Saturday after kiddush, my father would summon all his children to the living room for a Torah lesson. He would take out “the book” and begin reading. He would read a line or two and make us repeat after him again and again. Every week he read the same pages and made us repeat the same sentences. The pasuk that most influenced me was: “.#+'?#$+')&.” “Who is wise? He who learns from everyone.” After graduating high school, I went on to earn my Master’s. In school and in life I have lived by the pasuk that was read from Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Our Fathers a.k.a “the book”). My father’s teachings have greatly influenced me to learn from all people and all of my life experiences. Although my brothers and I always tried to hide the book, my dad always managed to find another way to teach us the important lessons of mussar that are transmitted through Pirkei Avot. Jeremy Chernikoff (father Allan Chernikoff) I can write ad nauseam about the basics taught to me by my father—tying a necktie, the benefit of waking up for a 5:30 am minyan, how to play baseball and the proper way to hammer in a nail. (I’m still working on perfecting that last one.) The most important things I have learned from my dad, though, have been through example. My brothers and I were fortunate enough to attend yeshivahs in our community. In order to offset the high cost of tuition, my father spent many evenings over the course of our school years working a second job as a carpenter. After a full day’s work as a social worker, he would come home, change into his work clothes, and head out—toolbox or ladder in hand—to paint, saw, hammer and more for the next few hours. Not only would my father not eat dinner before venturing out to his second job, he would often start cooking dinner for my brothers and me, if my mom had not yet come home from work. When I think about all the people in this world deemed heroes— athletes, movie stars, politicians—I always take great comfort in knowing that I have one to rely upon as a shining example of love, hard word and self-sacrifice. Thanks, Dad. Saul Zalta (father Freddy S. Zalta) Sunday, June 19 is not any ordinary day. That day I will be respecting one of my best friends, my father—the man who has taught me how to be a man, how to play baseball and even though we get into fights sometimes, we always make up and make the relationship even stronger. There are so many things that we either speak about or do. Since I was about eight-years-old, I have been going to work with my father. To this day I work with him. Many people would get bored just sitting there all day doing nothing, but we make it something special every single time. If we’re not playing baseball together, along with my brother, we’re watching the Mets game or we’re at the Mets game, watching TV together, or spending the night in the city. Here’s a small sampling of the many unusual and crafty ways some of our community boys have proposed. Sometimes the technique didn't exactly go as planned but, nevertheless, the outcomes all resulted in success. I hope these ideas bring out the creativity in some of you grooms-to-be as well. 550 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY Window Shopping: Jacqueline Sued & Steven Ashkenazie It was the day of the annual sidewalk sale on Norwood Avenue in Deal, NJ. Steven Ashkenazie was anxious because Jaqueline Sued was taking her time stopping to shop at every store. “Why don't we start at Marion’s Boutique, and make our way down the street?" he begged her. And when they did, the usual crowd of people flocked the store's window. “Look at that,” Steven urged her as he pointed to the window where the wedding dress she had previously tried on was on display. The window was beautifully dressed like a scene from a wedding, with the wedding gown Jacqueline had wanted, surrounded by mannequins adorned with bridesmaid and flower girl dresses, and flowers galore. Suddenly her eyes turned to the mannequin’s hand, adorned by a beautiful engagement ring. "But it can't be," thought Jacqueline, thinking they were supposed to be engaged a week later. But when Steven got down on one knee and popped the question amidst the fanfare, Jacqueline screamed almost as loud as the crowd around her. Not only did she accept, but Steven bought her the very gown displayed in the window. It's a Bird, It's a Plane… Randi Yaron & Steven Matsas Steven Matsas and Randi Yaron had been dating for three years, but never really took any official pictures together, something they would need eventually, for their upcoming engagement that was supposed to be in October. Ever the charmer, Steven decided to devise a plan that would throw Randi completely off guard, and ultimately off her feet. He told Randi that he wanted to arrange to take beautiful portraits of the couple on the beach with a professional photographer (keep in mind this was in August—three months before the proposal was to occur). He arranged for her to have her hair and makeup done professionally, and they shopped together for a new outfit so she would look her best for the so-called 'photo shoot.' They planned to meet the photographer, Morris Gindi, on Phillips Beach in Jersey, but Steven panicked as he saw the rain falling all day, and planned to move the shoot indoors. Sure enough, as if fate were on his side, the sun appeared, and the outdoor shoot Continued on page 552 #20 p 521-552.qxd 12/27/2007 6:58 PM Page 551 MARCELLE SASSON Broker Associate G & G REALTORS Office (732) 531-2000 • Mobil (732) 539-1850 REAL ESTATE SOUTH FLORIDA DEAL - 2 houses on 50 x 100 property - Good investment - Live in the 3 bdrm house and rent the 1 bedroom back house. As they took photos, they suddenly heard the sound of the familiar Jersey beach plane passing by overhead. After Steven convinced Randi to look up, to her astonishment, instead of the banner reading 'Eat at Joes,' or 'Bright Eyes Sunglass Sale,' it read 'RANDI, I LOVE YOU, WILL YOU MARRY ME? LOVE STEVEN.' Needless to say, Randi was in a state of shock as she accepted his proposal, and conveniently, the entire event was documented on film! 552 JANUARY 2008 IMAGE 18th ANNIVERSARY Look What’s Playing at the Drive-In Celia Esses & Lawrence Dayan Lawrence Dayan's proposal concept was surely not spur of the moment. The plan took careful research and much advance preparation, and it didn't hurt to have Lawrence's charm and knack for theatrics on hand. The plan was this: Lawrence would bring Celia Esses to one of the last drive-in movie theaters in the country, and mid-movie, Lawrence would pop on the screen and propose. Little did Lawrence know that drive-ins use special film, which he had to track down at one store in Manhattan to obtain, and then he filmed himself proposing. He then took the film clip to the Hazlet Theatre on Route 35 in New Jersey. The theater owners, ecstatic about the idea, decided to use the upcoming proposal as a publicity stunt, as this was the last summer they would remain open. While Lawrence went home and tried to convince Celia to come see Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey at the drive-in, the theater sent out a press release and free passes to the local media, alerting them to this ingenious idea. As Lawrence drove up in his convertible (with a reluctant Celia still opposed to his choice of movie), he tried not to notice the photographers lurking about. When Celia caught a glimpse of one, he covered up by explaining that the theater was closing at the end of the month, and they wanted to do a piece on the legendary drive-in. As they tried to focus on any merits the film might have had, suddenly Lawrence’s face appeared larger-than-life up on the screen. "I know you want to finish watching the movie, but I have to take care of something first," he began. "Celia, I love you, would you marry me?" And as soon as it was said, 30 cars filled with Lawrence's pals turned on their headlights and charged them, along with the press and the sounds of the entire drive-in honking their horns. "You're sick!" uttered Celia, but she managed to scream out "Yes" in all the hoopla. The funniest part, aside from being written up in the newspapers, was that the theater had left the clip on their screen all week, and 'Lawrence's proposal' ran beside Bogus Journey all week, for all to see! You Have the Right to Remain Silent Frieda Beyda & Sammy Catton Sammy Catton was the man with a plan. What started out as unique and brilliant, suddenly turned into a scary and frightening experience for his bride-to-be. He's lucky Frieda Beyda even said yes after the whole ordeal. Here are the details: On a leisurely, innocent drive one day, the couple heard police sirens commanding them to pull over. "Get out of the car with your hands up!" screamed the officers. Like a scene out of a movie, they made the pair lean over the car, as they frisked them for weapons and demanded to search the contents of their car. Frieda was completely stunned, unaware of why this was happening to them. The cops really got into their roles, screaming and treating the couple as if they were convicted terrorists. As they searched the car, they found a box, which they gave to Frieda. "OPEN THIS RIGHT NOW!" they screamed, as her hands shook. Sure enough, as she opened it she spotted an engagement ring. "Will you marry me?" asked an earnest Sammy as he got down on one knee. An obviously shaken Frieda mustered up the words Continued on page 562
