Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities (BBBS) is learning how hard
it is to say goodbye, as the annual Joe Schmit Golf Tournament comes to an
end after 16 years. Over the years, Joe and Laura Schmit and the Tournament
Committee have raised more than $3 million for BBBS. We cannot thank them
enough for their incredible contributions of time, energy and resources to
the agency. So, it is with humble thanks and appreciation that this newsletter
is dedicated to the Schmits and the Tournament Committee.
Despite the loss of the Joe Schmit Golf Tournament, we are ending the year
on an upbeat note. Our first annual meeting, held on November 8, 2007, was
a huge success! An audience of more than 300 people listened to a powerful message delivered by our
keynote speaker, Judge Glenda A. Hatchett, as well as to a Big and Little who reunited after 20 years
apart! Additionally, we were the recipients of a $600,000 check, courtesy of the Federated Insurance
Foundation. We thank Federated for their continuous support of BBBS. Currently, we are looking forward
to our next big event, the 2008 Awards Gala. Join BBBS on February 23, 2008, to experience an “Evening
on the Nile.”

African American male
volunteers in 100 days.
Of the more than 800
children on our waiting list, 27% are African
American boys. That’s
why we are challenging 100 men from the
African American community to STAND! for our
Children today!

Bengo Mrema has witnessed the power
of mentoring first-hand. For the past
seven years, Bengo has been a Big
Brother to Devon. During that time,
Bengo has observed many positive
changes in Devon and admits that being
a Big has also made a positive difference
in his life.
When Bengo was first matched with
Devon in 2001, Devon was 10 years old.
Bengo wanted to help Devon become an
outstanding student who was collegebound. However, he soon realized that
this was going to be much harder than
he had imagined. According to Bengo, it
was two years before Devon completely
trusted him. The first two years were
hard, as Devon had no incentive to listen
to Bengo, and Bengo constantly struggled
to get Devon to do anything. During this
time, Bengo states that he “came to appreciate the environment and background [Devon] was
coming from” and believes that “patience was absolutely the key those first two years.” Bengo
says that these hard times “helped [him] realize the importance of patience and also appreciate
the challenges kids, like Devon, face on a daily basis and the significance of mentors in their
lives.”
Bengo’s patience and commitment to Devon paid off. Over time, Bengo noticed a “more respectful
and more curious Devon who wanted to know [him] more and asked more questions.” Bengo
and Devon spent time talking about the importance of school and the importance of staying away
from drugs and gangs. They also spent time playing basketball, going to Timberwolves games,
tubing and roller skating. Today, Devon is 17 years old and is about to graduate from high school.
Bengo is proud of Devon and believes that Devon is a “great success … [Devon] has managed not
to get in trouble with the law, he is not using drugs and he is not a member of a gang.”
Bengo plans on continuing his relationship with Devon, stating, “I will always be here to help
Devon and provide advice as he becomes an adult and sets his own trail.” In addition to being a
Big Brother, Bengo has recently volunteered to be a leader for BBBS volunteer recruitment at
Cargill. BBBS would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Bengo for his commitment to
Devon and the BBBS mission.

Fall 2007 Match Events
Horseback Riding
On the afternoon of September 15th, 14 matches attended a fun-filled, memorable and
action-packed event at Pat Jenson’s Horse Ranch in Buffalo, MN. The Littles ranged
in age from 10 to 16 years old, and for many of them, this was their first opportunity
to go horseback riding. The activity was a great success; however, horseback riding
was just one of the afternoon’s highlights. The matches also experienced a trail ride,
vaulting (simple gymnastics on a moving horse), Big-Little human chariot races,
horse grooming, dinner courtesy of Subway , a camp fire with “s’mores,” a golden
horseshoe scavenger hunt and awards. The day was filled with laughs, new endeavors
and wonderful memories that Bigs and Littles will have for years to come.

The first Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCOP) match activity took place on
Saturday, September 22, at YMCA’s High Ropes Challenge Course at Camp Sacagawea.
Thirty participants showed up to be a part of the much-anticipated event. The first
part of the day was spent preparing the matches for the high ropes course by doing
low-initiative, team-building challenges. The Littles clearly dominated the first half of
the day through simple problem solving. According to a YMCA leader, “If the adults
would just listen to these kids and stop over-thinking everything, they would solve
the challenges much more quickly.” Before challenging themselves on the high ropes
course, the matches learned the basics of climbing, belay techniques, knot tying and
safety. During the second half of the day, the matches tested their strength, strategy
and skill as they braved the high ropes course together. The Littles were all very
brave, and the event was a huge success.

Fall 2007 Match Events/ VocalEssence WITNESS: Writing Workshop
Rock Climbing Event
On Saturday, September 15th, Vertical Endeavors hosted an exciting rock
climbing adventure for 15 matches at their St. Paul facility. A certified professional
rock climber gave the matches a brief instructional and safety training session
before handing over gear. Matches took turns tackling the various climbing walls
and challenging themselves with different levels of difficulty. Matches motivated
each other, with Littles providing their Bigs with encouragement to make it to
the top of the climbing wall. The activity encouraged the use of teamwork and
required some courage from the participants. Overall, the rock climbing activity
was a great success, as matches ended the day with huge smiles on their faces
and a sense of accomplishment.

VocalEssence WITNESS:
Writing Workshop
On Saturday, November 17, BBBS teamed up
with VocalEssence WITNESS to offer a free
writing workshop for Bigs and Littles. Fifteen
matches attended the workshop, which
was led by Louis Porter, a WITNESS teaching
artist. Louis began the workshop by having
matches listen to two 1930s radio shows
and emphasizing the importance of sound
effects.
After listening to the radio shows, matches
were put to work creating their own radio
dramas. They quickly got busy, bouncing
ideas off of each other and brainstorming
ways that they could include sound effects.
No topic was off limits, as matches wrote
about sports, Thanksgiving disasters, trips to
New York City, outings to the zoo, birthdays
gone bad and fishing—just to name a few.
After a 30-minute lunch break, matches were
able to revise their stories and begin drafting

their commercials. Matches came up with
commercials for a variety of products and
events, including chocolate chip cookies,
Comatose (a new sleep aid), an instant art
machine, Coca-Cola®, Monopoly®, a fashion
show and an art show fundraiser.
After two-and-a-half hours of writing,
everyone turned in their radio dramas and
commercials. The radio pieces created during
this workshop will be submitted for use in the
WITNESS Community Concert taking place
at Hopkins High School on Sunday, February
24, 2008. VocalEssence has hired radio actors
to narrate and do sound effects. For ticket

Joe Schmit Retrospective / Hero of Mentoring Award
BBBS would like to give an enormous thank you to Joe and Laura
Schmit, who have demonstrated a strong commitment to BBBS as
the creators and driving force behind the annual Joe Schmit Golf
Tournament. For the past 16 years, the golf tournament has been one
of BBBS’ most successful fundraising events.
When the event began in 1991, no one imagined how successful the
fundraiser would eventually become. Over the years, the Joe Schmit
Golf Tournament grew into a three-day event, including Joe’s Grand
Party and the Pro-Am and Celebrity Golf Tournaments. The event
featured food, entertainment, prizes, challenges and live and silent
auctions. This year, the tournament raised more than $140,000,
bringing the 16-year total to more than $3 million. All proceeds have
gone directly to helping match young people with mentors.
While the Joe Schmit Golf Tournament ended its 16-year run this past
summer, Joe and Laura’s generosity will not soon be forgotten. They
have left an ever-lasting impression on BBBS as well as the community
for their tireless fundraising efforts and dedication to BBBS. However,
as Joe is quick to point out, the dedicated volunteer committee and
loyal sponsors were key components to the success of the fundraiser.
BBBS is grateful to the Schmits, the Tournament Committee and the
many loyal donors for their hard work and continued support of the
BBBS mission.

Hero of Mentoring Award:

BBBS would like to congratulate Justin
Hanley, the winner of the Hero of Mentoring Award presented by the Minnesota
Business Partnership. Justin was presented
with the award on September 11, 2007, in
front of 800 civic and business leaders at
the Partnership’s 30th Anniversary annual
dinner.
Justin has been a Big Brother to Deon for
the past two years and couldn’t be happier about his experience as a Big Brother.
Justin and Deon enjoy a wide range of activities, including bike riding, sledding, going to the movies and attending sporting
events. According to Justin, “We’ve even
tried to make ourselves more sophisticated by attending the Georgia O’Keefe art
exhibit … and a concert by New Zealand
tribal warriors.”
During the past couple of years, Justin has
witnessed many positive changes in Deon.
He has seen improvement in Deon’s confidence and notes that Deon is doing better
in school and smiles more often. Being a
Big Brother has also been a learning experience for Justin. According to Justin, “The
most important thing I’ve learned is that
kids just want to spend time with someone. Deon doesn’t have any expectations
except that Justin will “be a consistent and

Annual Meeting/ The Federated Challenge
BBBS’ first annual meeting was a huge success! Held on November
8th, 2007, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis, the event
celebrated BBBS’ achievements this year and spotlighted
individual Bigs and Littles. Keynote speaker, Judge Glenda A.
Hatchett, a best-selling author and host of a nationally-syndicated
television series, inspired the audience as she spoke about her
experiences with youth. Roshini Rajkumar of Roshini Multi Media
was also on hand as the meeting’s emcee.
While many matches were spotlighted during the meeting,
particular emphasis was placed on the match between Scott
Schwefel and his Little, Maurice Draine. Scott and Maurice spoke
at the meeting and told the story of their special relationship.
Scott was matched with Maurice back in 1984, when Maurice
was six years old. Their relationship was strong for two years until
Maurice moved away. Each spent countless hours trying to track
the other down with no luck. That is until recently, when Maurice
tracked down Scott. They are currently in the process of renewing
their friendship that began more than 20 years ago. Although they
were only matched for two years, Scott still had a long-lasting effect
on Maurice’s life. As stated by Maurice during the meeting, “Being a
part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program meant so much to me
as a young person. Scott helped me find my true self and made me
look at things in a different way, and for that, I will be forever grateful
… Scott opened up my little world and showed me I could achieve
better, and I have.” Their relationship is proof that a little bit of you
makes a big difference.

In addition to hearing from Scott and Maurice, audience members
witnessed a great moment in BBBS history. During the annual
meeting, the Federated Insurance Foundation presented a check for
$600,000 to BBBS. The donation comes from funds raised this past
August at the Federated Golf Challenge for Kids of Minnesota. “This
generous donation is truly extraordinary,” commented Gloria Lewis,
BBBS President and CEO. “It represents the single largest gift our
agency has received.”
After the success of this year’s annual meeting, one can only imagine
the great things to come next year!

In August, the third annual Federated Challenge
for Kids of Minnesota was held to raise funds to
support mentoring and children in Minnesota.
The proceeds from this event benefit the three
Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies in Minnesota.
At our first Annual Meeting, representatives from
Federated Insurance and the Federated Insurance
Foundation (Dan Lewis, Julie Rethemeier and
Sarah Buxton) presented our agency with $600,000,
which will support the agency’s continued efforts
to match children with caring mentors and provide
support to those mentoring friendships.

Baron is a senior-level marketing executive with proven experience in financial services,
with leading firms, including Carlson Hotels Worldwide, JPMorgan Chase (Credit Cards,
Corporate Marketing and Communications, and Auto Finance) and Allianz. Prior to joining
Carlson Hotels, Baron was the head of Multicultural Markets Advisory Services for the
Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America. In each of his professional roles, he
has been a consistent driver of profit and share growth through marketing innovation,
strong communication skills and a collaborative management style. Baron has a B.A.
in Media Arts and an M.B.A. in Accounting from Long Island University. Baron will be
lending his energies to the Marketing Committee at BBBS.

Rich currently serves as the Key Account Director of 3M’s Display and Graphics Business.
He has been with 3M for more than 27 years and has been a leader at 3M for the majority
of his career. Rich has held various positions in the Memory Technology Group, in
addition to leading Specialty Film and Video. Throughout his career, he has advanced
3M’s competitiveness by being an effective Sales and Marketing Professional, as well as
mentoring many employees to successful careers in their own right. Rich is known as an
exceptional negotiator and a seasoned business professional. Previously, Rich was on the
Board of Directors with the Convent of the Visitation School for five years. He has a B.S.
in Pre-Law and an MSE in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.

Bikes For Kids
The Minnesota Twins and the North
Star Foundation kicked off the holiday
season with an incredible gift to BBBS!
On December 14, 2007, they hosted a
party for 350 Littles at the Metrodome.
Close to 1,000 people attended the event,
as Littles’ Bigs and family members
were also invited.
For the first part of the evening,
matches and family members had the
opportunity to eat and participate in a
variety of activities on the field. There
were a lot of smiles and laughter, as
they had their faces painted, played
football on the field, practiced their
baseball skills in batting cages, had their
portraits sketched by an artist, bounced
in a moonwalk, watched a magician,
and met the Twins’ mascot, T.C. The
young people also enjoyed racing Willie
Dyson, football player for the Minnesota
Gophers, across the field.
At the end of the evening, each Little was
surprised with a very special gift: a bike,
helmet and lock! Bikes and helmets
were tailored to Littles based on their
gender and height. BBBS is grateful
to the Minnesota Twins and the North
Star Foundation for their generosity and
help in spreading holiday cheer to Little
Brothers and Sisters!
