My impression of the RRCA at this point in time is a mixed bag. The confusion I observed at the main business meeting was again accompanied by a lack of communication to the clubs and the club members attending the convention. However, the vast, vast majority of clubs in attendance want the same major things as the PTCRC; mainly, insurance for our club races and activities and a dues structure as in years past. The insurance question is no longer a question for 2003. The RRCA has funds to provide the needed insurance coverage for all of 2003. Great news since our Classic Race takes places in October. Also, the clubs voiced their opinions (for quite a long time) during the business meeting that we want our dues structure based upon hoseholds and not individual members. This was the major disagreement which led 44 clubs not to renew with the RRCA in 2003, instead creating a new national entity known as the AARC. More good news, there were five new directors elected who are solid and strong and likely to make some quick changes. This newly elected group were all endorsed by the new AARC group. Other points from the convention concerning membership: n n n UPCOMING EVENTS: PTCRC CLUB MEETING, MARCH 3RD • JACKSONVILLE GATE RIVER RUN, SAT. MARCH 8 • GRAND PRIX MARCH 15 – PICK A POINT APRIL PTCRC MEETING AT PARTNERS PIZZA, TUESDAY THE 8TH • GRAND PRIX APRIL 12 – CONSISTENCY RUN 743 clubs were invoiced for membership in 2003 70 of those clubs are newly formed running clubs 583 clubs have renewed as of April 1, 2003 (78.5%) n n 44 clubs chose not to renew - a loss of $156,000 as a result 101 other clubs have not renewed, but have not joined the AARC - a loss of $90,000 Business Plan to cut costs for the remainder of 2003: Staff of 5 reduced to 3 (2 full-time and 1 parttime) n “Footnotes” magazine will not be published again until RRCA is financially sound n The 2003 Convention was completely underwritten by the Montgomery County Runners and the 2004 Convention will be done on this same model. n RRCA Board travel is frozen except for board meetings n 2003 budget was approved which should return RRCA to solid financial position, planning for paying off all previous debts. Many programs are slashed as a result until RRCA is back in the “black”. n Attempting to get the 101 clubs who have not yet renewed for 2003 to renew n Thanks to the PTCRC for allowing me to attend the convention and learn first hand the direction the RRCA is heading and how that direction may impact the future of our club. I look forward to seeing you at the Run for Alex 5K on April 19th and our own Kids Fun Run May 3rd at the Fredrick Brown Amphitheater. If you have yet to sign up to help in the Kids Fun Run, just show up that morning and Teri Besch will find a job just right for you. Our next monthly scheduled meeting will be Monday May 5th at the Wyndham Conference Center. See you there. You may not find it newsworthy or particularly relevant, but hopefully you will find it at least mildly entertaining and sometimes amusing. Two of the club members received top honors in this race of over 7,500 runners. Dave Olson won his age group in a time of 56:57, and Trish Vlastnik also brought home the top spot in her age group with a 63:23. Many of the others did very well, on this challenging course, which includes The Florida Striders running club again generously hosted the PTC crew, at their pre- and post-race tent. As always they provided a place to change, “private” port-a-potties, and plenty of food and drink at the end. Our “sister club” in Florida hosts the friendliest post-race party of the entire race and many new friendships were added to the ones already existing. Thanks also to the Jacksonville Track Club, which puts on this great event every year. the streets lined alternately with cheering crowds and Azaleas in bloom. PTCRC Golf Tournament 3 I have included in this issue my most prized running possession that I have received in this sport. It is a poem that was written to me by my closest friend, David the individual most responsible for starting me on this 23 year journey that is not yet complete. I first met David in July 1980 and we ran together only from October to March, six short months. However, the friendship formed and the bonds established have remained strong to this date. Our wives have also developed a special relationship, tying our families together as only true friendship can. The poem included in this issue illustrates this better than anything I could write and shows the true joys and rewards that running can provide. When people ask me why I run, my first RANKS OF THE RUNNING CLUB’S PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES GROWS A new “Professional” athlete joins the PTC Running Club. Congratulations to Dave Olson for joining the ranks of the “professional” athletes. Dave at age 52, just won his first official prize money when he finished as the 3rd male overall and first master in the Leprechaun 10K held in Dublin Georgia. Dave’s time of 37:19 was good enough to bring home prize money of $250.00. I understand Dave has photocopied his check and is having it framed for all to see. His wife Cathy also completed the same race and finished 2nd in her age group. With daughter Rachel, and accomplished runner and triathlete in her own right, the Olson’s are surely the first family of runners in the Peachtree City Running Club. Dave also finished 3rd in his age group at the Cooper River Bridge Run 10K Race in Charleston on April 5th in a time of 37:16. He won no money but did receive a neat silver engraved plate. Trish Vlastnik finished 2nd Grand Master overall in her age group in Charleston and received a somewhat bigger silver engraved plate and a check for $500.00! AC EEGGA C FE FE 2 B 200 So in this issue I chose to reflect on what I consider to be the greatest aspect of this sport we all enjoy. It concerns friendships formed, made, and lost. Each of us who have been doing this for many years have our own unique stories about people we have met along the way, places we have seen, and friendships made. Editors Note: The poem was written over 20 years ago. It revolves around a bike path in upstate New York that was a favorite running route of Dave and I while living there. I chose to include it in our newsletter because it reminds me of running along the cart paths of Peachtree City. I hope you enjoy it. Y E G AC Y L The PTCRC 2nd Annual Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th, 12:00 noon at Flat Creek Club. An on-line application is available at the club activities website. Just enter the information and submit. Cost is $10.00 plus green fees/cart. For info call Roy Robison at 770-631-4715 or email at [email protected]. I recently attended the Road Runners Club of America national convention. Each year one of the highlights of the convention is the awards banquet. You get to hear some amazing stories and speakers reflecting on all aspects of our sport. It usually is a time to reflect on what running really means. I always find myself thinking back over 23 years of running about many different and wonderful accomplishments. response always involves the pleasure of the many friendships formed and lost, and the great people I have had the fortune to meet along the way. For those of you just getting started, the running club offers you the opportunity to experience the same joys and pleasures that 20 + years have afforded me. 3 3 the infamous Matthews Bridge over the St. Johns River, at the 8-mile mark. L he largest PTC group ever, did the “road trip” to the Jacksonville “Gate River Run” 15K USATF National Championship on March 8. Twenty-six runners, accompanied by five spouses and friends made the drive down to north Florida for a great showing from the Peachtree City Running Club. Most spent the entire weekend at Jacksonville Beach, relaxing both before and after the race, at several of the many local eating and drinking establishments. B 200 The Bike Path Seemingly endless and distant The narrow path continues on. Four padded shoes touch ground Keeping a beat to a rhythmic song. Warming the air with deep driven breaths We plunged ahead to meet the goal; And to keep our minds off our task We spoke of secrets in our soul. Boots, Bernice, - the children too, Were often on our run. Thought of now and future life Passed beneath the sun. I’ll miss the joy of sharing him When at last he leaves; This friendship grew so rapidly Our lives began to weave. Our shoes are old and wearing thin And sorely need replaced; Perhaps I’ll keep mine in a box To remember when we raced. The miles ahead are always there Waiting to pass behind; And as you take them in your stride I hope that you will find: That people are able when they think they are* And fortune favors the bold;** So grab at every “marathon” Before you get too old. As for me - i’ll still pursue Those things in life I like; And of you i’ll often think When i jog the path of bikes. *Vergil humo ** Juvenal Hélène Balligand The first thing to know is that Helene is an expert in design applications of centrifugal and positive displacement blowers! Wow! Now she just has to explain that to the rest of us. Having received a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY gives you some idea of Hélène’s ability. Hélène has been in the US for 12 years. After she completed a Mechanical Engineering degree in Strasbourg, France, she came to study at Syracuse. There she her Mater’s of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering while working as a teaching assistant during the year and research assistant during the summers. Her research and thesis were in the fields of fluid dynamics and aerodynamics related to the opening and deceleration of parachutes. After completing her Master’s degree, she started working full time for a blower manufacturing company in Syracuse. However, she missed going to school, learning, doing research and decided to pursue her Ph.D. while working full time. After several years, she graduated and received an award for the best Ph.D. dissertation in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. Needless to say, her parents, who came from France for the graduation ceremonies, were very proud of her! Besides studying, Hélène played the flute in the Central New York Flute Choir. That was one weekly activity she would not In 1998, the company she worked for relocated to Peachtree City, GA, which is when Hélène moved to Fayetteville, GA. She welcomed the change in climate (anyone who has lived in upstate New York would understand) and has enjoyed the Atlanta area very much for the past four years. With her studies behind her, Hélène has had more time to devote to new activities, one of which is rowing. Hélène joined the Atlanta Rowing Club two years ago and absolutely loves this outdoors sport. As cross training, She started running as cross training. Her first race was the Peachtree City Classic Women’s 5K in 2001! It was such a good experience that she repeated it with the Jingle Bell Run in December 2001. She then increased her distance to 10K and ran the Chattahoochee Challenge, Silver Comet Race, the Possum Trot, Peachtree Road Race, etc... Her secret ambition is to run a half marathon some day! Hélène, 35 years young and single has been living in Fayetteville for the past 4 years. She is now working as a Senior Product Engineer for GardnerDenver in Peachtree City. Hélène has been running for about two years and is one of our newest club members. She likes the 10K distance and has personal bests of 58:37 for the 10K and 28:30 for a 5K. Hélène’s entire family is back in France, including her twin sister. They have come to visit her in the US on several occasions. Her parents own a small vineyard in the Macon region (which makes “Macon Village” Chardonnay her favorite white wine!) Hélène has been to many cities and national parks in the US from coast to coast and has been impressed by the variety of sceneries and the natural beauties of this country. Hélène joined our club to run outside with a group of motivated and friendly Rene has a bachelor's degree in Communications from the University of Connecticut and a master's degree in communications from Georgia State. Her husband Dan is a retired Army Major who currently works as a contractor for the Army Reserve Command at Fort McPherson. Rene has a son Tom who is a senior at NYU, Bryan a freshman at UGA, and Maureen an 8th grader at Flat Rock Middle School. Being a military wife for 17 years provided Rene with some interesting experiences. She has spent over 8 years in Germany (one of the best countries in the world to run in) where she got to do a lot of community theater. She even made her professional debut in the show Street Scene, co-produced by the Houston Grand Opera. She thanks her son Tom for that opportunity. They were looking for American kids for the show and he wanted to audition. Like a good stage mother, Rene not only took Tom to the audition, but her two other children as well. The whole family, including Rene was offered roles by the director. Rene says her role was a nonsinging part, but I bet we could get her to participate with many of the clubs other talented singers and performers. Rene's running accomplishments include a 25:08 5K, a 54:55 10K and a 1:30:11 15K. Her first race was the Tyrone Founder's Day 5K. It was also her favorite, especially because of the smalltown atmosphere and the fact that she placed 2nd in her age group. Since then, she goes back every year because she Rene's other interests include snow skiing and biking. She also participates in monthly book and investment clubs. Rene runs because “ it makes me feel fit and strong. It helps me work off my frustrations, yet it always gives me a sense of accomplishment. Plus, I can eat whatever I want and not gain weight.” MATCH GAME GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CLUB OFFICERS. The following represents a little known fact about each of our club officers. She had never run a 10K before and wasn't sure she could finish. However, inspired crowd support along the entire route led to ecstasy as she crossed the finish line. 5 3 Since our good ally France has been in the news a lot lately, I thought I would profile two club members with “French” connections. The first is Rene Flaherty. Her only connection is in her first name, which sounds French. However, Hélène is the real deal, actually being a citizen of France. It is good to have Hélène as a member of the club to provide some balance equal to the three British club gentlemen. runners. She is also looking for chance to volunteer for races or other events that benefit a healthy cause. L THE FRENCH CONNECTION 3 B y J o e Wa s s e l l miss for any reason.
