One hundred years after the dedication of
the Statue of Liberty in 1886, John Williams
was commissioned to compose a fanfare for
the re-dedication ceremony. At this event,
Mr. Williams led the Boston Pops Orchestra in
the first performance of this work, which the
John Williams composer described as “a group of American
airs and tunes of my own invention.”

Referring to the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, director Steven Spielberg
states that John Williams’ music “was clearly responsible for half
the success of the movie.” This suite features two of the signature
musical sequences. In “Out to Sea,” the trio of shark hunters
led by police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) heads
into open water to find the menacing beast. This is followed by
the “Shark Cage Fugue,” a classically inspired and sophisticated
accompaniment to a tense underwater scene in which Hooper
(portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss) comes face-to-face with the great
white in an all-too-fragile suspended cage.

Based on the famous Canadian Brass version by master arranger
Luther Henderson, here is a wonderful adaptation for concert
band by Michael Brown. Opening with a bluesy medium swing
feel, the tuba section is featured on the melody along with a
small group of players. Mid-way through the arrangement, the
style changes to an up-tempo Dixieland style with the melody
cleverly traded between various sections of the band. This
