4 Showring Magazine Winter 2014
Letter from the editor
This year, 2014, has been a great year for the Showring Magazine
and I would like to thank the ALSA Board of Directors for allowing me
to publish it! There are some subscriptions to our Showring magazine
from as far away as India, Japan, Canada, Germany, Peru, Italy, Australia,
Spain, Taiwan, Indonesia, and more. Through our Magazine, the world
is able to see Llamas & Alpacas in real life doing what they can do! We
all are to thank for that! I wonder how hard it would be to ship a llama/
alpaca over to their country.
I also wanted to mention that I was impressed with the 2014 ALSA
Grand National. It was wonderful seeing so many llama and alpaca
folks having a good time, and being able to see some people that I
haven’t seen in quite a long time. The halter animals were beautiful
and the competition in performance was stiff. (A special thank you to
Betty Hollman for putting together such challenging and wonderful
performance courses) The levels of talent in the youth classes were
unbelievable. Fiber & fleece classes where huge and very competitive.
All in all the show was great and the Grand National committee did an
outstanding job! I have featured the 2014 Grand National in this edition
and I hope you enjoy the pictures and articles.
I would also like to say a special thank you to Sally Rucker and Marilyn
Nenni for their wonderful picture taking at the 2014 GN. They both
sent me their pictures to use. These pictures helped me put this issue
together for you. You know, during the year I welcome any pictures or
articles from ALSA members. If you have sent me pictures or articles
throughout this year, thank you. If you have not and wondered why your
show or animal is not in a Showring Magazine, well, that is because I
need your help! Please send me pictures and articles.
If you send me pictures or articles that are pertaining to an ALSA
sanctioned show, or an activity you have been involved using your llama
or alpaca, this will usually be published without a charge. The Showring
Magazine does charge for individual ads about your animals and/or their
winnings! The Showring Magazine is also available for businesses or
ranches to purchase an ad. Please see the ALSA website, or follow this
link for more information; http://www.alsashow.net/magazine.html
If you need help creating an ad for the Showring Magazine, I will help
you create an ad for free. I will also help any superintendent of an ALSA
sanctioned show put together an advertisement for their show to be
publicized in the Showring Magazine free of charge.
Blessings,
Ruby

Letter From The President:
This time of year, we are all looking forward to the special Holiday Season and ALSA is no exception. We have much to
be thankful for.
ALSA’s show season was quite active with new shows being added this year. The 2014 Regionals and the 2014 Grand
Nationals were successful in giving wonderful opportunities for each member to show off their llamas and alpacas for Regional
and National titles. We couldn’t have had all of these shows without our amazing Superintendents, show volunteers and judges.
We thank you for all of your hard work and being an integral part of keeping ALSA successful.
The ALSA Board of Directors could not function without its’ committees and their Chairpersons. We’ve got new
volunteers as well as our longer termed committee members that have helped keep the organization of ALSA running. Our
committees and Chairpersons work non-stop to keep each committee functioning and the BOD wouldn’t be here without you
all. Thank you so much for your time, dedication, and non-ending work you do to help ALSA.
Our Executive Secretary, Robin is the voice and the first impression any person gets of ALSA. She works very long hours
and does her best to always make sure ALSA has a smiling face answering the phone and handling business. Thank you Robin
for everything you do.
To our ALSA members, we are only ALSA because of you. The membership is the driving force of ALSA. You attend
shows, clinics, work in front or behind the scenes, but each role is important. Thank you for being members of ALSA. We
appreciate your support and ALSA is nothing without you.
ALSA’s Judges are an important part of ALSA. They attend clinics, apprenticeship, more clinics and now even
conference calls, all to bring the best educated judges to ALSA’s shows. Their honesty and integrity in judging our animals
is what makes ALSA the forefront of the llama showing community. We thank you for your time and effort just to become a
certified judge with ALSA and your hard work and dedication to being the best of the best.
I couldn’t be here writing this without my fellow Board of Directors. Jim, Charles, Susan, Debbie, Terese, Paul and Patti
are some of the hardest working people I know. The membership, committees and Chairpersons all come to these directors
and they have a voice through these Board members. We may not always agree, but we are not only a team, we become like a
family. It may seem a bit dysfunctional at times, but like with family, we make it work well. I thank each and every one of you
for making our 2014 a success and moving ALSA forward. I also thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to promote,
support and serve ALSA.
I’m wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a Blessed 2015.
From my family to yours,
Kitty

Letter From Vice President
Writing about myself is not something I care to do. But writing about
my kids, Oh Yeah, that I will do…..I am a mother of 4, step mother of 3,
and grandmother of 3. I manage a 4H club here in Texas with 13 members
and a 4H llama project group with 23 members. After my youngest
daughter graduated from High School, my husband commented on what
I was going to do with all my free time. I asked, what free time? He had
assumed I would be retiring, so to speak, from my duties as Youth Leader.
Not a chance.
I know the opportunities that were opened for my children through the 4H llama project. I remember a quote
from one of my oldest daughter’s essays….. she wrote “I am just as comfortable in my jeans and boots attending
a tractor pull as I am in my formal dress and heels attending the Broadway Play, The Phantom of the Opera”…..
These well rounded youth that have the opportunity to experience so many different aspects of life, are the
ones that are going to make a difference for us. The youth truly are the future. It is my hope, as a board
member, to help open up opportunities for our youth. It is important for us to give the youth opportunities to
grow and learn.
I ask you to mentor a youth in your town, donate to the ALSA youth scholarship fund, take your llamas out
to schools and preschools, and help spread the joy and love of llamas. I want to see our llama community grow
and stay strong for many more generations to come. I want to see my grandchildren showing llamas in the next
10 years. It saddens me to see shows where there are only 1 or 2 youth in a class.
I moved to an area where there was not a 4H program for llamas. I worked with our Extension office to get
one started. We are in our 5th year now and have 23 wonderful children that work hard with their llamas. They
learn about health and safety, go on hikes in the woods, and attend shows. There are many other wonderful 4H
and Youth leaders out there across the country that provide llamas and their experience to the youth. I cannot
name you all, but You know who you are. I personally want to thank you all for all your hard work and
dedication to the youth, the llama community, and to ALSA for everything you do for and with our youth.
Without leaders like you, there would be no youth, and no future for ALSA.
In closing, I would like to say, share your llama with a child, and the llama will be loved by you both.

Office Talk
Hello everyone.
Our 2014 Alpaca and Llama Show
Association showing year is coming to a close. There have been
many winners in the ALSA family this year. There are far too many “kudos” to give out
individually – so let me give you all A BIG CONGRATULATIONS together! Be sure to check out the ALSA
website to see the new ALSA Champions and the new
ALSA ROM winners and also many of the youth winners for 2014! You will also find the results for the 2014
ALSA shows here:
http://www.alsashow.org/webshowfindByYearasp?year=2014
If any of you feel that the results you have are different,
PLEASE contact me and also feel free to contact me
concerning your individual awards! The BOD and I are
committed to ensure that your awards are awarded! We
will be sure to research and get you the accolades you
deserve!
I also wanted to mention that if any of you have earned a
certificate this year, and have not received it, please contact the ALSA office. (I apologize for any inconvenience
this may cause you.) Also, if you have not received your
certificates for any year, please contact the ALSA office!
Let’s get them to you!
The 2015 ALSA memberships are underway. Many of
you have renewed and/or joined for the first time! Thank
you for that support! Memberships are due by January
1, 2015. I would like to urge all of you to renew or join
ALSA now. (It is too easy to forget to do this during the
busy year until it is too late).
By renewing your membership now you will certain to
be eligible to vote in the ALSA Board of Directors Election which will be in the summer of 2015. To be eligible
for participation in this vote or to nominate a candidate
for this election, you must be a current ALSA member
by the Day of Record which is currently April 1st of that
year. When you renew, I also ask that each of you to
make sure to verify your email address with the ALSA
office. ALSA has been conducting their voting process
electronically, and your email address is needed for this.
We also want to make sure that you receive the necessary information. May I also please ask each of you to
contact the ALSA office if you change your email address
during the year, thank you! This, too, will help to make
sure you receive necessary emails from the ALSA office.
We also have been getting geared up for the 2015 Show
season. You will see the ALSA calendar here:
http://www.alsashow.org/nshows2003.asp
Please look toward the bottom for the 2015 shows being
offered so far.
Now – to a bit of news:
Our 2014 Grand National Show of Champions was held
on October 24-26 in Park City Kansas.
It was a HUGE success! The ALSA office sent out a
feedback questionnaire to the attendees of the 2014
Grand Nationals and did receive quite a few back. These
questionnaires will be used in the planning of the 2015
ALSA Grand Nationals! Thank you so much to all of
you that have sent your questionnaires in! If any of you
have misplaced yours, and would like to send one in,
please let me know. I will send you out another. Your
feedback is very important. You will also be finding out
soon who will be the new Grand National Chair and
Superintendent! We would like to make the 2015 Grand
National Show of Champions one that you will all be
swooning over!
Speaking of the 2014 Grand Nationals, this entire 2014
Winter Edition of the Showring Magazine is devoted to
the 2014 Grand Nationals! I hope you are amazed and
excited for the many people and animals showcased!
Congratulations to all winners!
And in my final note for 2014, I hope that each of you
have a very blessed Holiday Season and a Happy New
Year.
I’ll talk to you next year!
Robin
Yours truly,
Robin Turell

Thought for the day…
Once there was a herd of cows
and a herd of llamas living in adjoining fields.
They were separated by only a thin strand of
wire. Every day the cows would coax a young
llama over next to the fence and then grab him
and pull him into their field where they used him
like a soccer ball and kicked him all over the
place until they got tired of him and let him go
home. The moral of this short tale is:
Are you ready?..........
“llamas, don’t let your babies
grow up to be cow toys.”
Thanks to all the donations, the
silent auction and the raffles were a great succes.
