PS/IS 266 74-10 Commonwealth Blvd. Bellerose, NY 11426 Nicole Scott Principal Paul Winters Assistant Principal June 2009 Dear Parents, Welcome to summer! The 2009 Summer Reading Challenge’s theme this year is “Readers are Leaders!” It was inspired by the great leader, Abraham Lincoln, who walked miles to borrow and return books. Mr. Lincoln read his books after working long, hard days. Computer genius Bill Gates ranks Catcher in the Rye as his favorite. Mrs. Schwartz and Mrs. Gallagher agree with him. Famous filmmaker, Steven Spielberg loved Treasure Island as a child and Mrs.Palmeri loved Frog and Toad. Edge, the wrestler, loved Eragon and Ms. Elzweig’s favorite book was Chrysanthemum. Our own leader, Ms. Scott states her favorite book to be The Little Engine That Could. Leadership is about asking other people to do what you ask of yourself. Our challenge‘s purpose is to help students and their families understand the value of reading for enjoyment and to bridge the home/school benefits of the reading experience. There is also documented evidence that states a 2.6 month delay in September for children that do not read over the summer. The PS/IS 266 Summer Reading Challenge is the cure! The reading your child does this summer may be the foundation of the lifelong learners and leaders of tomorrow! There is a Reading Record to help you keep track of the books you have read. You may want to select books or magazines on your own. There is also an activity page. There is a Story Map form to be followed by specific grades. There will be NO penalty for NOT doing the book reports or activities. A completed Reading Record is necessary in order to receive a certificate. The class that has the most participants will receive a special celebration!! Students will be required to read a specific number of books and complete ONE creative activity or book report for any one book read to receive a certificate. Books read for a specific subject can be included. PreK-K 3 picture books + 1 creative activity 1-2 3 picture books + 1 chapter book + 1 creative activity 3-5 2 chapter books + 1 creative activity or 1 book report 6-8 3 chapter books + 1 creative activity or 1 book report All work must have the student’s name and incoming grade on it. The Challenge work is due on September 11, 2009. Late work will not be accepted after that date. There will be grade leveled labeled crates in the lobby to deposit the completed Challenge work. Making reading a part of your summer will have long term benefits for your children and for your family. We want to wish everyone a safe and healthy summer! See you in September!!! Janice Smith Susan Weingart Summer Reading Challenge Committee Creative Response Activities Below please find a list of activities (appropriate Pre-K through 8) that students can create in response to the book they have read. Select the one that most interests the child so that it is a fun activity. All responses must have a name and a grade on it. 9 Interview a character from your book. Write at least ten questions that will give the character the opportunity to discuss his/her thoughts and feelings about his/her role in the story. 9 Write a diary that one of the story’s main characters might have kept before, during or after the book’s events. Remember that the character’s thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary. 9 Construct a diorama (three-dimensional scene which includes models of people, buildings, plants and animals) of one of the main events of the book. Include a written description of the scene. 9 Write a letter (10 sentence minimum) to the main character of your book asking questions, protesting a situation and/or making a complaint and/or suggestion. This must be done in the correct letter format. 9 Create a mini-comic book relating a chapter of the book. 9 Make a collage/poster showing pictures or 3-D items that relate to the book and then write a sentence or two beside each one to show it’s significance. 9 Draw a comic strip of your favorite scene. 9 Make a mobile about the story. 9 Write a different beginning or ending to the story. 9 Make a map of where the events in the book took place. 9 Complete a story map (see attached: Story map “A” for Pre-K through 3. Story map “B” for grades 4 through 8). 9 Make a list of new and unusual words and expressions you might have come across while reading the book. 9 Make a “Wanted” poster for one of the characters or objects in your book. Include the following: a.) a drawing or cut out picture of the character or object, b.) a physical description of the character or object, c.) other information about the character or object which is important, d.)the reward offered for the character or object. 9 Select one character from the book you read who has the qualities of a heroine or hero. List these qualities and tell why you think they are heroic.
