Message from Ann
Warm greetings from OASIS Rochester!
It’s winter time in Rochester! We have a wonderful catalog full of
stimulating and fun offerings during this trimester. Resist the urge to
hibernate and join us as we get those brain cells and muscles moving!! In
the event of inclement weather, we will make every effort to stay open, so
please check the local news to see if we are closed. We have also started a
page on Facebook called OASIS Rochester. “Like” the page and look for
frequent updates on classes, events, closings and informational articles.
Please contact me (730-8802 or [email protected]) if you
have any questions, concerns, program ideas or if you would like to teach
a course. We are always looking for new and different ideas so we can
learn and grow together. It might be cold outside, but here at OASIS
it’s warm and inviting!! Thank you for being a part of a supportive and
vibrant organization!!!

Michael Arve
The Federal Theatre Project, under the directorship of Hallie Flanagan,
was responsible for some of the most fascinating and controversal
theatre in American History, including early works by Orson Welles,
John Houseman, and the celebrated Living Newspaper series. The
Federal Theatre Project was a powerful force from coast to coast and
was quickly recognized as such by members of Congress with an axe
to grind, and often became the target of anti-Roosevelt politicians.
Often overlooked, the Federal Theatre Project influenced theatre
directing, staging, artists’ approaches to social issues, and playwriting
for decades to come. Join Michael as he discusses this fascinating
period of “Dangerous Theatre.”

surprise, amaze and puzzle the reader. You’ll learn the structures for
making these books so that you can create a book or two that will be
uniquely your own. We will look at the work of many contemporary
book artists and the origins of this modern expressive art form. Fee
includes all materials.

Frank Judge, President, Rochester Poets
This course is for those who’ve written poetry at any level and for
those who want to learn how. The class can be taken as often as a
member wants since it’s a workshop rather than a presentation of set
content covered by the end of the session. While this is NOT a course
on writing traditional forms like the sonnet, sestina, etc., the class does
consider some short forms like haiku, tanka, and cinquain. Students
aren’t required to write in meter and rhyme; instead, they’re encouraged
to use whatever is comfortable for them. Class and home exercises
are geared to tapping into our creativity, using our experiences and
imagination to develop and sharpen the habit of writing. There are no
required texts for the course; a list of useful texts and resources will be
given to registrants before the course begins.

10 sessions Alfred Hitchcock Part VI: 1960s and 1970s
313
David M Ferrell, PhD, Professor and Chairperson Emeritus,
Nazareth College
These sessions will be devoted to viewing and discussing five
Hitchcock thrillers with which he concluded his illustrious career. Two
of the films - Psycho (1960), starring Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins,
and Frenzy (1972), starring Jon Finch and Barry Foster, continue to
explore psychotic behavior which began with with Bruno Anthony in
Strangers on a Train in 1954. The Birds (1963), starring Tippi Hedren
and Rod Taylor, is a story filled with symbolism about the fragility
of human relationships set against a background of recurring bird
attacks. Marnie (1964), starring Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery,
8
centers around a young woman’s compulsions and buried fears created
from deep-seated childhood memories. And, in Torn Curtain (1966),
starring Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, Hitchcock returns to one
of his favorite topics – a chase that results after defecting from one’s
homeland to steal scientific formulas from behind the Iron Curtain.
Hitchcock would leave behind over fifty motion pictures that remain
compelling, popular, and worthy of study. He was a true genius despite
the fact that he never received an Academy Award.

David Seaburn, Local Author
Maxwell Ruth, a cantankerous, old high school history teacher falls
down his basement stairs and soon thereafter starts hearing “The
Words” over and over again---’endingtimeendingtimeendingtime.’
His life is changed forever. In local author David Seaburn’s new book
More More Time, we learn about the lives, loves, and losses of six
characters. They are lively, funny, at times; a little bit lost or wounded,
yet resilient and hopeful. They are wrestling with the questions we all
wrestle with: How do we make relationships work? What is the impact
of loss on our lives? How do we use the time allotted to us, even though
we have no idea how much time we actually have? Years as a parish
minister followed by a long career as a marriage/family therapist have
informed Spencerport author David Seaburn’s new book, More More
Time. Read before the class so you can take part in a discussion and
reading of this wonderful new book!

Meditation is not just about being quiet nor is it about the absence
of challenges. It is about being the witness or observer of one’s life
experiences. Through increasing awareness, we learn to transcend the
ego that thrives on drama, pain and suffering. Meditation develops
concentration and promotes deep relaxation, with the brain emitting
alpha and theta waves. These waves have the power to calm the mind,
relax the body and balance and harmonize the discordant energies
within us. When we allow meditation to become a part of our lives, we
are, in reality, reconnecting to the sacred silence that resides in us and
allows the inner peace to permeate in our outer life. The sessions will
include the use of the crystal singing bowls and how these sounds can
expedite one’s healing and transformation.

Practicing Meditation and Mindfulness 210
in Daily Life
Usha Shah
Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When
one is mindful, one is observing one’s thoughts and feelings from a
distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life
pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening
to the experience. Scientific studies have shown that mindfulness
practices improve physical, mental and emotional health. The class
will include a short meditation and a dialogue on how mindfulness
practices can be used to overcome life’s challenges such as loneliness,
alienation, aging, relationships, trauma, illness, physical pain and
death. We will examine how these difficulties can become pathways
to greater psychological freedom.

Maximize Your Mind

Marlene Caroselli
Can you honestly become more brain-powerful? Can you really
optimize your cognitive capacity? Can you truly maximize your
mental operations? Of course you can! But not if you’re always telling
yourself you’re slow, you have a poor memory, you can’t do math, et
cetera. The first step then in Mind-Maxing is to think both positively
and powerfully. The next step is to learn the tools that will enhance
your cerebral operations and boost your self-confidence as well. We’ll
cover both steps in this session, which provides practice exercises for
numerous cognitive functions. Dr. Marlene Caroselli is an author,

These waves have the power to calm the mind,
relax the body and balance and harmonize the discordant energies
within us. When we allow meditation to become a part of our lives,
we are in reality reconnecting to the sacred silence that resides in us
and allows the inner peace to permeate our outer life. The sessions will
include the use of the crystal singing bowls and how these sounds can
expedite one’s healing and transformation.

People with dangerous personalities live among us. Some of us have
been victimized by these people. Almost every day we awaken to
major tragedies in the news. But, for every one of these horrific
acts, there are millions of smaller damaging encounters that leave
victims. In his book Dangerous Personalities, veteran FBI profiler
Joe Navarro shows us how to recognize the four most common
“dangerous personalities,” the Narcissist, the Predator, the Paranoid,
and the Emotionally Unstable, and, equally important, how to protect
ourselves from them. Navarro draws examples from history as well
as from his extensive experience to construct a proactive approach for

This four session course will explore a new perspective on the key event

of the war, the key factors determining the outcome, the strategies
employed by both the Axis powers and the Allies, and the unique
perspective of each of the major participants-Germany, Japan, Britain,
the Soviet Union and the United States. Session 1 will cover factors
that made the war almost inevitable despite opposition to the war by
most countries involved. Session 2 will assess the early victories of
the Axis powers, why they occurred and the mistakes made by both
18
sides. Session 3 will cover a key year-1941-and how the final Axis
and Allied coalitions were formed by happenstance and blunders,
specifically the German invasion of the Soviet Union and the Japanese
attack on the United States. Session 4 will explore the operational
events for the balance of the war as the overwhelming power of the
Allies crushed the Axis powers. Laurence Britt is a published writer,

This year is the centennial celebration

was the spark that created the modern
Irish Republic. As W.B. Yeats said of the
Rising, “A Terrible Beauty is born” and
with that delicious phrase we saw the
execution of the martyrs but the lifting of
a people and the birth of a country. What
took place? Who was involved? How was
it seen at the time? As Yeats reminded
us: “MacDonagh and MacBride, And
Connolly and Pearse, Now and in time to
be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly: A Terrible
Beauty is born.”

The Enchanted Island
520
Carol Crocca, Opera Guild lecturer
In 2011 Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Met, conceived the idea of
an opera in English using musical gems of the 18th century, a “Baroque
pastiche.” The Enchanted Island is the realization of his concept, with
music by Handel and Vivaldi, among others, and a libretto based on
Shakespeare’s The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The
gorgeous production, lavish as is only possible at the Met, features the
brightest stars of this repertory, including Joyce DiDonato, Danielle de
Niese, David Daniels, Luca Pisaroni, and Placido Domingo as the god
Neptune. We will explore all aspects of this magnificent confection.

As cartoonist Gary Varvel says, “Cartoonists say in one picture
what it takes columnists 1000 words to say. When it’s done right, it’s
magic.” Current events offer a goldmine of examples: especially the
2016 political campaign, re-connecting with Cuba, and immigration
reform. We’ll look at the staples of cartooning, eg., caricature, satire,
and metaphor as argument, as well as how cartoonists themselves
view their work. We’ll trace the patterns to the portrayals and share
some laughs and also some insights. The sessions will be interactive,
and participants are invited to bring in some of their favorite cartoons
for discussion in the second session.

Monroe County Office for the Aging
The Monroe County Office for the Aging (MCOFA) has served
as the designated Area Agency on Aging for Monroe County since
1973. It has the responsibility to plan, coordinate, collaborate,
fund, report and advocate for community based programs and
services that meet the needs of Monroe County residents age 60
and over, and their informal family caregivers of any age.
Services are provided through MCOFA funded sub-contractor
agencies. MCOFA then monitors these services annually to
ensure service quality, program effectiveness and positive
outcomes are delivered to those older adults. MCOFA programs
are primarily targeted to individuals with the greatest social
and/or economic need, with particular emphasis on serving
the low income minority population that typically reside in
their own homes in underserved areas within Monroe County.
January - April 2016
Since 2005, MCOFA has also administered New York Connects,
the officially designated Aging, Disability and Resource Center for
Monroe County. NY Connects provides information, assistance,
analysis and planning to meet the current and future long term care
needs for people of all ages residing in Monroe County.
The 2010 census indicates that Monroe County’s population of
adults age 60 and over has increased from 123,011 to 145,084
within the past ten years. This increase heightens the importance
for MCOFA to continue to provide a wide array of high quality
community services in the most cost efficient manner as possible.
MCOFA funded programs assist people to remain independent and
safe in their own homes, and keep our community rich in spirit in
helping people to excel at aging well.
