Opportunities to Serve
At Hope Network, we are grateful that 2011 once again
provided us with the opportunity to impact the lives of
so many individuals with disabilities and disadvantages.
The economic climate all around us continues to put
obstacles in front of many organizations. While some are
facing turmoil and wondering what tomorrow might bring,
Hope Network stands undaunted. We have not been
stalled by the pressures of the economy; instead we have
expanded programming across the state of Michigan and
pursued a national vision. We have prepared ourselves
with forward looking programming and lean operations,
but most importantly we have surrounded ourselves
with the right people. At Hope Network, we continue to
be blessed with dedicated employees who support the
individuals we serve with dignity and compassion, and
committed members on both Boards that guide this
organization with the principles and heart that are rooted
in our Christian values.
Over the past year, Hope Network expanded our behavioral
health services in Southeast Michigan by acquiring New
Passages. Together we are committed to serving people
with disabilities efficiently, innovatively, and with great
compassion and commitment. Our combined efforts will
expand our continuum of care to serve more than 20,000
people, enhance our sustainability, and position us for
anticipated changes in national health care reform.
We also expanded several programs in West Michigan
including two new homes for our brain injury clients and
two new innovative programs for people living with a
mental illness. We added a second specialized home for
people living with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), a rare
but life-threatening genetic disorder. Hope Network is the
only agency in Michigan with special certified residential
programs dedicated to serving individuals with this unique
diagnosis. PWS is a disorder in which individuals have a

constant feeling of hunger due to a flaw in the hypothalamus
in their brain.
Hope Network has also been blessed with the talents of
Tom Rademacher, award-winning Grand Rapids Press
columnist. Tom has taken everyday stories of our Hope
Network employees, consumers, and volunteers and
turned them into inspirational weekly memoirs simply
called ‘Cake’ a slice of Hope Network.
Over the past year, we have engaged our legislators in
Lansing to ensure that our voice is heard on the issues
that affect Hope Network and the people we serve.
Insurance coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of
autism spectrum disorders will be a significant issue
in 2012. To stay updated on this and other issues
Hope Network is following, please visit us at www.

As we look at the work that goes on daily throughout
this organization, we can’t help but feel a sense of pride
at the impact we are making in the lives of people and
communities in need. With your continued support we
will find new and advanced solutions to create greater
independence for those we serve. We hope we can count
on you again in 2012 to support Hope Network.
Bless you,
Phil Weaver

“Everyone has something that they love to do; something that makes them feel truly ‘alive’. For
those whom have suffered a catastrophic injury, this beloved activity can suddenly be inaccessible
or even seem impossible. As a Recreational Therapist I have the skills, education, and resources
available to give people a vital part of their lifestyle back. I have seen lives changed and spirits
renewed by helping people regain that ‘one thing’ that makes them happy and carefree.”
Kristin VanZanten, CTRS II, Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist

Fundraising to increase independence to thousands of
people ser ved
In July, Hope Network’s Green Initiatives were kicked-off at the 26th Annual Golf Classic held at Blythefield
Country Club. The $1.5 million project, rolling out in three phases of impact, will reduce energy expenditures,
build sustainability, and create Green Job growth. The Golf Classic saw a 20% increase in attendance and over
30% increase in contributions.
The 10th Annual Legacy Gala awarded Jahaun McKinley with the Independence Award and Kathy Dunlap with the
Prestige Award. As many parts of the organization re-energize efforts in wellness, MVP Fieldhouse served as the
fundraiser venue.
A new campaign, Employees That Care, launched in the spring to engage employees to give back to the
consumers we serve. Gift of Hope, which provides consumers with gifts at Christmastime, expanded fundraising
from an internal employee campaign to a more widespread, external donor base.
The Hope Network Foundation also restructured itself to expand its donor base to keep up with Hope Network’s
growing locations.
