NBS9000 and PSX Configuration Guide
1 Introduction
Sonus Networks Border Switch (NBS9000) Configuration Guide provides details to connect AT&T IP
Flexible Reach service using AVPN or MIS/PNT transport. NBS9000 is a Session Border Controller
(SBC) that connects disparate SIP trunks, SIP PBXs, and communication applications within an
enterprise. It can also be used as a SIP routing and integration engine.
NBS9000 is the point of connection between Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) and AT&T
IP Flexible Reach service. It is also used to secure the SIP trunk and to make adjustments to carrier and
enterprise signaling for interoperability.
1.1 Special Notes
1.1.1 G.711 Fax Calls known issues
Cisco CUCM 8.5 does not support the protocol negotiation AT&T requires for performing G.711 fax calls.
However, it supports T.38 fax calls, Group 3, and Super Group 3 fax calls.
1.1.2 Emergency 911/E911 Services Limitations and Restrictions
AT&T provides 911/E911 calling capabilities, but it does not warrant that the equipment and software, for
example, IP PBX, reviewed in the Customer Configuration Guide will operate with AT&T IP Flexible
Reach to complete 911/E911 calls. Hence, Customer is recommended to ensure the performance of
equipment/software with its vendor.
AT&T IP Flexible Reach services support 911/E911 calling capabilities under certain Calling Plans.
Following are the circumstances when the AT&T IP Flexible Reach services are unavailable.
• Relocation of the end user's CPE
• Use of a non-native or virtual telephone number
• Broadband connection failure
• Electrical power loss
• Delay in updating Customer location details in the automatic location information database
Scenarios when these services are unavailable are stated in the Service Guide for AT&T IP Flexible
Reach located at http://new.serviceguide.att.com/.
Refer AT&T IP Flexible Reach Service Guide for understanding the limitations and restrictions.

1.2 Network Topology
The Cisco IP Phones used with the CUCM can be configured to work with Skinny or SIP Protocol.
Note: This guide supports NBS9000 configurations for NBS9000 releases V08.04.00 A015 and PSX
release V08.04.00 A004.
1.2.1 Cisco Unified Communications Manager
The Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) version is 8.5. This document can also be
associated with the Cisco CUCM version 8.6 available on the Cisco Interoperability Portal. For more
details, see CUCM configuration.

NBS9000 and PSX Configuration Guide
The ladder diagram explains a Call Manager originated call to the AT&T FlexReach Application. Dialogs
up to AT&T border element are displayed in this diagram. The two NBS elements displayed here are
interfaces on the same NBS.
2 NBS9000 Configuration
The following NBS configuration is required for supporting the Cisco Call Manager on the trusted side
with a redundant connection to the AT&T IP Flexible Reach on the un-trusted side.
Redundancy entails two SIP destinations in the AT&T network to support the service. All cards in NBS
are fully redundant and hot-swappable. There are three trunk groups defined, ATT_IPFR_1_TG,
ATT_IPFR_2_TG, and CUCM_TG
Trunk Group ATT_IPFR_1_TG represents the primary NBS connection to the AT&T IP Flexible Reach
Service.
ATT_IPFR_2_TG represents the secondary NBS connection to the AT&T IP Flexible Reach Service. NBS
attempts to connect with the primary IP Trunk and if it is unreachable, it tries to connect to the secondary
IP Trunk. Trunk Group CUCM_TG is used by NBS to complete sessions to the Cisco Call Manager.
For each Trunk Group the following NBS Configuration is required.
• Network Selector Table
• Trunk Group
• Signaling Zone*
• NIF Group*
• Media Zone*
• Media NIF Group*
• SIP Service Group
• Address Reachability Profile*
Sonus Networks, 2012
Page 8
NBS9000 and PSX Configuration Guide
Network Selector Table: NBS uses this database to determine the IP trunk group that receives a call.
Trunk Group:PSX routes call to this trunk group.
Signaling Zone: This Signaling Zone is used for SIP Signaling traffic to and from an IP Trunk Group. It
defines Transport protocols for SIP.
SIP Signaling Port: The logical port on which the NBS sends and listens to SIP signaling packets.
NIF Group: The interface used for SIP signaling traffic on an IP Trunk Group.
Media Zone: The Media Zone to be used for RTP traffic on an IP Trunk Group. This defines Transport
protocols for RTP.
Media NIF Group:The interface used for RTP traffic on the particular IP Trunk Group.
SIP Service Group: The object that binds a SIP service to an IP Trunk Group and assigns the name and
properties to the binding.
Address Reachability: NBS is configured with the Address Reachability Feature on un-trusted Public
Interfaces. The time out limit period for a SIP message on Trunk is 5 times in 5 minutes. When a SIP
message times out on the Trunk, NBS identifies the SIP endpoint and sets this Trunk unavailable to
support calls.
NBS then sends SIP OPTIONS until it responds. When NBS receives a configurable number of
successful responses to OPTIONS, one in this case, the SIP endpoint is placed back in service.
* Configuration reused by Un-trusted Trunk Groups, ATT_IPFR_1_TG and ATT_IPFR_2_TG.

4 CUCM Configuration
The CUCM 8.5 configuration which is used along with the Sonus NBS5200 is as per the details provided
in the Cisco Configuration Guide:
AT&T IP Flexible Reach Service on MIS, MPLS PNT or AT&T VPN: Connecting Cisco Unified
Communications Manager 8.5 with Cisco Unified Border Element Release 8.6 using SIP.
This guide is available online at “CISCO INTEROPERABILITY PORTAL” for “Cisco Unified Border
Element (CUBE) / SIP Trunking Solutions” at the following location:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns340/ns414/ns728/ns833/1001797.pdf
Following are the differences in the configuration as compared to those used in the CUCM 8.5
configuration guide provided above.
Regions
In the Cisco CUCM 8.5 guide (Page 20 of 125 –to- Page 23 of 125) three regions are configured as
shown in the section “CISCO UCM Regions”

5 Troubleshooting
Call traces can be gathered on an individual call by call basis. This is enabled by creating a Call Trace
Filter on the NBS. When the filter is defined, a calling and called number can be entered to capture a
single call. This data is viewed in the EMS with the Call Trace screen within the Tools major screen.
Assistance for troubleshooting can be obtained by calling the Sonus TAC center at 1-888-391-3434.
