1 HARLEY MARINE SERVICES SOUNDINGS Photo Courtesy of Bobby Davis Harley Marine Services Fall Invitational On Monday, August 26th, Harley Marine Services hosted the second annual Fall Invitational at Glendale Golf Club in Bellevue, WA. Friends and business associates of Harley Marine came together to support the Kaplan Cancer Research Fund at Swedish Medical Center Foundation. The Kaplan Cancer Research Fund is focused on different types of cancer research, including breast and hematologic cancers. Dr. Kaplan is the lead researcher for many clinical trials currently available at the Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle and is the doctor of two of Harley Marine’s friends, Todd Prophet and Michelle Sloan. Benefiting a cause that means so much to our employees, customers, vendors and friends, made supporting the Fall Invitational that much more meaningful. Our sponsors graciously and generously gave their support before the guests even arrived with on-course sponsorship opportunities. The day of the tournament, golfers were treated to a fully loaded player bag including a travel suitcase, Ralph Lauren sweater and socks, golf balls, a golf towel, a visor, and a cold drink mug. Breakfast and boxed lunches were also available for the golfers once they arrived. At the sound of the horn, the golfers teed off to a beautiful day at Glendale. Players had the opportunity to participate in several on-course competitions including three hole-in-one opportunities, thanks to our sponsors Riverside Ford, Brotherton Cadillac and Good Chevrolet. 2 3 Harley Marine Services A Full Service Marine Transportation Company September 2013 At the end of the round, the golfers reconvened for the dinner program, which included a live auction, a very touching video about Dr. Kaplan and an opportunity to “Fund-A-Cure”. To view the video, please click on the “Fund-A-Cure” screen to the right. At the end of the night, we were able to present Dr. Kaplan with a check for $300,000 for his research efforts. Additional donations are still coming in, so we will share our final number in the next issue of Soundings. We would like to give a special thanks to all of our sponsors for making this event such a success. Your support is greatly appreciated. The z-drive tractor tugs were built at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders in Freeland, WA with the most technically and environmentally advanced equipment available. Both tugs are 100 feet long, 40 feet wide, have 6,800 horsepower and will provide 91 tons of bollard pull. The tugs feature CAT 3516 Tier III engines and cold ironing/shore power capabilities. Making the AHBRA FRANCO and ROBERT FRANCO the greenest tugs in the California ports. On August 12th, the Southern California Harley Marine office christened the ROBERT FRANCO. The event was attended by over 250 employees, customers, vendors, government officials, port members and regulatory officers. General Manager, Doug Houghton along with Mark Coynes with Jacobsen Pilot, Matt Nichols with Nichols Brothers and CEO Harley Franco all spoke at the event, detailing the tug’s immense power and environmental impact on the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. On September 7th, the Northern California Harley Marine office christened the AHBRA FRANCO. The christening was a great success with approximately 125 customers, employees, and other special guests. The event started at 1115 with a reception and the ceremony promptly started at 1200. The guest speakers included Captain Greg Stump, the Captain of the Port and Captain Peter McIsaac, the President of the San Francisco Bar Pilots. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary presented the Colors and Christa Durand sang the National Anthem. Rev. Roger Bauer from the Chaplain at the International Maritime Center blessed the tug. After the ceremony guests enjoyed lunch, music and tours of the AHBRA FRANCO. In addition, we had a photo booth so all of our guests could have a photo to remember the special occasion. We are all so honored to have two vessels bear the name of our owners children. The AHBRA and ROBERT are welcome additions to our fleet and will serve our company and customers proudly. CEO and Chairman, Harley Franco states “the arrival of this new state-of-the-art tug boat symbolizes Harley Marine Services dedication to the safety of our employees, protection of the environment, and to providing the most advanced, dependable, and committed service to all of our customers.” To watch videos of each christening, please click on the below screens. 3 Harley Marine Services A Full Service Marine Transportation Company September 2013 On July 30th, the M/V SILVER was delivered to Harley Marine Gulf from Conrad Shipyards in Morgan City, LA. We are pleased to welcome the tug SILVER to the Harley Marine Gulf fleet. Our most recent addition shows our continued effort to provide our customers with safe, efficient and reliable petroleum transportation throughout the US Gulf and Mississippi River regions. We are proud to recognize Harley Marine Services commitment and dedication to state of the art and environmentally friendly tugs in all aspects of company operations. The SILVER is the second of (5) five 75 ft. x 29 ft., 2,000 horsepower tugs ordered from shipbuilder, Conrad Industries of Morgan City, LA. She is the sister vessel to Harley Marine Gulf's tug, LIGHTNING. Both tugs are named after horses ridden by famous cowboys and each is equipped with two Cummins K38M Tier II engines. Compared to Tier 0 engines, SILVER's Tier II engines reduce the production of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) by 47%. Harley Marine estimates that this will mean a 22-ton reduction in annual emissions of NOx. Harley Marine Services will add (3) three more Conrad-built tugs to its fleet this year - the ALAMO, the FURY, and the STARDUST. All five tugs will join Harley Marine's expanding fleet in the United States Gulf Region. Each tug will be built with technically and environmentally advanced equipment to meet the specific needs of Harley Marine's customers and expanding business markets. Recently we’ve added recycling of glass containers and composting of food wastes to the waste reduction plan for the terminal and vessels operating out of Portland. Small 2.5-gallon counter top food waste collection bins were provided by Waste Management and have been placed in vessel galleys and terminal break areas. They are filling up with used coffee grinds and filters. Curbside collection bins have also been provided for separating glass containers from the other recyclables. Florescent tubes and batteries are also recycled using WM’s Lamp Tracker program. This program helps us keep toxic mercury (from tubes) and heavy metals (from batteries) out of landfills. We recently received and approved a request to transport a retired U. S. Army chaplain and his wife. Colonel Mike Carkhuff (U.S. Army, Retired) and his wife, Carole, were visiting the Trident Seafoods, Inc. fishery production facilities in Akutan, Alaska, which neighbors Unalaska Island, where the Gyrfalcon is based. They are close friends to the Trident executives in Seattle and visit Akutan at their request and conduct services in the local church. The flying weather between Akutan and Dutch Harbor was poor on August 13 so Captain Iszler was approached by Dave Abbassian, the manager of the Trident facility, to request they transport them to Dutch Harbor to meet their plane back to Anchorage and then home. We readily agreed and the below email sums up their trip aboard the Gyrfalcon. * * * Jim, Thanks for the encouraging note. We certainly were blessed when Dave Abbasian connected us with Capt. Chris Iszler. We just missed you in Dutch. Gyrfalcon First Mate Paul must have been there to meet you when he also greeted us as we were departing for Anchorage. Yes! Captain Iszler and crew took excellent care of us. We asked many questions and received thorough answers. All the crewmembers were courteous and patient with us. In a six-hour crossing, we got to know several of the crew. Chris and his men are outstanding representatives of your company and of your Trident relationship. We are coming back for a Christmas visit with our Fox family at Safe Harbor Church, Akutan. We will arrive in Dutch 1230 20 Dec and leave Dutch 3 Jan to Anchorage. We hope to sail to and from Akutan via either a Trident freighter, or possibly aboard the Gyrfalcon. By the way, if you visit Akutan, Sunday church services are 0800 and 1930. Thanks again for your kind note. We do hope to meet you. When painting over non-skid paint, it is important to always lay new non-skid down during your project. If no new non-skid is laid, the area, when wet, can become very slick. This can cause a very serious accident. SIP Tip #2 By: Joe Hoat, Olympic Tug & Barge We are responsible for not only our own safety, but also that of our fellow crewmembers. If you see a shipmate in a hazardous situation, bring it to his attention. If you see a mechanical or other physical issue that you are uncomfortable with, bring it to the attention of the captain or the mate. Stop the evolution if necessary. Extra time taken to do a thing safely is nothing compared with the potential time lost due to injury or incident. It is important to create an atmosphere onboard where all crewmembers, no matter experience level, feel empowered to ask questions, say slow down, or even stop without fear of consequence. Out here on these boats, there are few small injuries. Most require extensive time on the beach. By watching our crewmates’ backs and speaking up, we all help to create a safer vessel. - - - - - - - - - - SIP CONTEST WINNERS We have winners in two of our ports, Seattle - Joe Hoats and Portland - Andrew Butterfield. Wash your hands and utensils after handling raw meat, fish, or poultry. Keep perishable foods refrigerated or frozen until they are used. Frozen items should be thawed in the refrigerator, under cold running water or in a microwave. Marinate food in the refrigerator. Try to maintain a temperature in your refrigerator below 40°F. Keep a thermometer in the refrigerator and check it often. Buy foods with the longest period to the expiration date. Don't buy food items if the packaging is damaged. Throw away foods that don’t look and smell fresh. A change in the odor or appearance of foods is often a sign of spoilage. Be sure cutting boards and knives are thoroughly scrubbed and washed with soapy water after each use. These items can easily transfer disease-causing bacteria from raw meats and poultry to vegetables, fruit or cooked meat. Use different cutting boards for raw and ready-to-eat foods. These are just a few ideas to keep in mind while preparing food. Food handling is a very important part of our day-to-day operations aboard our vessels. These guidelines are ways to keep our crews safe and free of sickness and illness. SIP Article #2 By: Joe Hoats After having done the Port Alice run a couple times recently, I came to appreciate the increased hazards associated with product transfers at that mill. I had been aware of the safety issues of the mill in the past but with increased awareness through continuous training and emphasis on safety, I was able to see greater diligence and preparation were necessary when alongside at Port Alice Mill. Port Alice Mill produces “specialty cellulose” products. I am not certain what they produce but I know they use quite a few chemicals in the process that are kept in tanks at various locations on site. Hydrogen dioxide, chlorine, ammonia are the main hazards that were pointed out by the mill safety representative. The mill is an aging facility where such spills are not common but not unheard of. In the event of a spill, a general alarm sounds at the plant and the boat crew is to muster with the dock crew where SCBA or full-face respirators are available. After mustering, the vessel crew evacuates the site with the dock crew using golf carts. The safety issues paramount to the vessel crew is from the initial alarm sounding until the time the crew is on the dock and evacuation begins in earnest. Currently, most vessels have two SCBA’s as well as half face respirators (either personal or vessel common). Crew needs to ensure that proper cartridges designed to handle possible chemical sources found at the mill, namely chlorine and ammonia. The issue with half face respirators is that they do not offer protection for the eyes. Chlorine, ammonia, and hydrogen dioxide all affect the eyes. Exposure to these gases without proper PPE, be it chemical goggles, full face respirator, or SCBA’s will lead to, at least, temporarily impaired sight making an evacuation difficult. Half face respirators themselves are insufficient for escape if these gases are present. Other methods must be researched and instituted. The other safety issue is communication between the dock, tug, and barge in case of a chemical relief. Watches should be maintained on the tug throughout the duration of the transfer so that evacuation notification is as effective and efficient as possible. The possible hazards at Port Alice are unique for our operations. Because of our continuous training, greater emphasis on safety, and communication with management, we are equipped to recognize and respond appropriately to developing safety issues. 9 Harley Marine Services A Full Service Marine Transportation Company September 2013 SAFTEY INCENTIVE PROGRAM 2nd Annual SIP Winner Timothy Picou This year, Harley Marine Services was proud to announce Timothy Picou as the yearly SIP Winner. Over the past year, Timmy, as you all may know has been a great supporter of our Safety Incentive Program. He has written several safety tips and articles, which have been featured in previous issues of Soundings. He has been a promoter of all things safety. Safety is at the forefront of his day and he showcases that while he works. Harley Marine Services sent Timmy and his wife on a six-day inclusive vacation to Branson, Missouri, where they enjoyed many local attractions, such as the Titanic Museum, Hollywood Wax Museum, and the Grand Jubilee Quartet. They also had a grand time at the Dixie Stampede Dinner Show and enjoyed a cruise on a paddle wheel boat at the Main Street Cruise Lake. Letter from Timothy: To All Employees of Harley Marine, I want to recommend that each and every one of you get involved in the Safety Incentive Program. It is as easy as writing safety related articles, tips and JSA’s that are pertinent to our job, participating in safety meetings and keeping safety on the job on your mind at all times. I ask that you do this, not just to win an all-paid vacation like I did, but because it helps other people become more knowledgeable, productive and safe while doing your job for our company. We are the company’s representatives to our customers and vendors – safety is important to not only our company but everyone involved. It just takes a little time to write an article or get involved with the Safety Incentive Program. The most important thing I learned over the past year with everything I researched was that safety begins with you. You are the first person who should watch out for your well-being and you should never take a chance to save time, you may hurt yourself or another co-worker. Remember, Harley Marine wants you to go home the same way you came to work, in one piece. So, take tiem to reflect on your job and take time to be safe. Also, you could win a cool vacation for your efforts! I thank everyone at Harley Marine for the wonderful vacation in Branson. Captain Timoth Picou, M/V BUTTERCUP We hope this will inspire you to get involved in SIP and keep Harley Marine’s goals of being a Safe, Responsible, Reliable and Efficient operator in mind while doing your job. 10 Harley Marine Services Safe, Responsible, Reliable, Efficient September 2013 Harley Marine employees can access important medical plan information online by creating a personal profile with Trusteed Plans? The plan consists of two components: employee contributions through payroll deduction and a company match. Contributions can be directed to a variety of investment options and may be made either before tax, after tax or through a combination of the two. The plan documents provide all the plan details. How much should I save for retirement? The answer to this question depends on many factors such as your current age, planned retirement age, savings, investments, debt, expected investment returns, social security and other pensions, planned retirement lifestyle and others. Fidelity Investments research indicates that many individuals will need to save 10 – 15% or more of their employment income to have a high probability of meeting their income needs through the end of retirement. How do you get there? The most important step is to start savings today. An easy way, if you are just starting to save for retirement is to start small and each six months increase your deferral by one-half of a percent of your salary. You will not feel much pain as you increase your contribution and over time you have the opportunity to build up a solid nest egg for retirement. (Note that there is a degree of risk in any investing and results cannot be guaranteed. You are well advised to consult with the plan’s education specialist.) The quarterly open enrollment period for October 2013 has arrived. Human Resources recently mailed out packets to new employees, including all necessary forms. For those currently participating and/or eligible employees, the 401(k) informational packets can be located on the PAF system, including deferral and beneficiary forms. The packets include updated educational material and information regarding investment options. Please remember open enrollment is the only time you can change your deferral amount. You may change your investment elections anytime online at www.moranknobel.com. The deadline for returning forms to your local HR representative is Tuesday, September 24th, 2013. Due to administrative constraints, any forms turned in after the deadline will not be processed and you will have to enroll during the next open enrollment in January 2014. We truly appreciate your help and value you as an employee.
