Welcoming Messages Welcoming Messages Opening Address Eminent scholars, honored guests, ladies and gentlemen. Good afternoon. It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to welcome you to the 6th International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research. Ever since we decided to hold the ICCHNR in Seoul, we have experienced many difficulties. Especially, the recent outbreak of MERS virus called into question the feasibility of hosting the conference in Korea. However, the strong support and cooperation of the ICCHNR committee in the United Kingdom, the 2015-Seoul, ICCHNR Organizing Committee, and all the conference participants enabled us to host this conference. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to all 600 scholars and health professionals from 19 countries. I also wish to express deep appreciation to Hyungpyo Moon, The Minister of Health and Welfare, Nak-in Sung, The president of Seoul National University, and Sookbin Im, the President of the Korean Sociaety of Nursing Science. Researchers and knowledge-users from many countries are gathered here to join discussions on using knowledge translation science to examine the implementation of community health nursing in practice settings. The 6th International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research 02 This important and exciting work requires partnerships, collaboration, and strong relationships between researchers and knowledge-users. Therefore, one of the goals of this conference is to foster friendships, not only through science, but also through social activities. As a community health nursing expert, you will have an extraordinary opportunity to meet and network with leading professionals from academia, industry, and public health sectors. Now, I declare the 6th International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research open. I hope that you all enjoy your stay in Seoul and make meaningful professional relationships. 19, August, 2015 Insook Lee Chair of the 2015 Seoul ICCHNR organizing committee Welcome Address Welcome, honored scholars, ladies and gentlemen, to the 6th ICCHNR(International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research). I sincerely thank all the speakers and appreciate all of you here today for participating and attending in this event. “Health Promotion across the Lifespan” is what we will be discussing throughout this conference, and personally, I think this is a very appropriate subject to disscuss as chronic disease prevalence rate is increasing worldwide, and viral infectious diseases such as MERS is affecting our life today. As you may all know, MERS which has recently occurred in Korea has not only caused serious tension in Korea but throughout the entire globe. The appearance of illnesses new to human such as MERS, SARS, and Ebola, and the increasing rate of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease are seriously threatening all of humankind. However, profound research has made clear that these health issues cannot be cured by the current medicine oriented health care system, and therefore, the importance of an alternate system, Primary Health Care and Health Promotion is becoming prominent. These changes in healthcare environment and demand are becoming new challenges and opportunities to those in the nursing professions. Nurses should become professionals, or health leaders in health promotion. As of today, ICCHNR will provide a new understanding of health promotion and bring opportunities to assemble the capabilities of nurses. 19, August, 2015 Jungsoon Kim President of the Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing Welcoming Messages I hope you would have yourselves much more enjoyable and memorial time during staying in Korea. Thank you. 03 Welcome Address I am delighted and excited to welcome so many community nursing researchers from across the globe to come together in Seoul to share our knowledge, experience and evidence in this wonderful city. The 6th International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research 04 ICCHNR held its first international conference in Edmonton, Canada in 1993, quite a number of you were there to experience the groundswell of activity as community health nursing became empowered through recognition of the significance of our research in making a difference to the health needs and outcomes of our populations. In 1995 ICCHNR became a registered charity in England and we have continued to meet our charitable aims by partnering with community health nursing organisations all over the world. Just to remind you, these are: ICCHNR is also committed to supporting community nursing in developing countries, through its international network of nurse researchers, international conferences and fund raising activities. This year we celebrate 20 years of ICCHNR, which makes it even more special to be in Seoul in partnership with our colleagues from the Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing and Seoul National University. I have seen that there are community health nurses here from at least 20 different countries and others will be joining us on-line throughout the conference. I think that creates a unique opportunity for community health nursing to come together and do more than just disseminate research and new developments. We can use our time together to build knowledge through critical dialogue, to engender new networks and take back ideas into our own cultures and communities, ensuring that we continue to develop best nursing practices that will promote, improve and maintain the health of the people we work with. Thanks to digital technology the knowledge we generate over the next three days will be shared with those who were not able to make it to Seoul and archived for our future reference. By engaging with each other and with our wider networks in education, policy and practice community health nurses can have real and lasting impact. In this way I believe that we are co-creating a global Community of Research Practice for community health nursing. A Community of Practice has been defined : “Communities of Practice are groups of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an on-going basis” (Wenger et al., 2002: 3) The communities, families and individuals we work with experience health, wellbeing, ill health, recovery, birth and death in their own contexts and cultures. Nursing enables and empowers people to participate in their health and illness experience and to support and care for family members, identify neighbourhood health needs and work with the wider community to promote health. The abstracts that have been submitted to this conference demonstrate hundreds of examples of how we can use knowledge translation science to achieve this, and which as a Community of Research Practice we can deepen our knowledge and expertise of. The Republic of South Korea has a strong commitment to community and primary care nursing and the KACHN stands out for its contribution and dedication to addressing the community health issues over many years. We are therefore honoured and privileged that we have collaborated with KACHN for this event. I would like to extend our grateful thanks to Dr Insook Lee as Chair of the Conference Committee in Seoul and to Prof. JungSoon Kim, President of KACHN for their commitment, dedication and sheer hard work in bringing this conference to fruition. Of course this could not have been achieved without so many other team members working together tirelessly as community nurses always do, organising this wonderful venue, reviewing abstracts, liaising with speakers, planning social and practice events and endlessly answering our questions from the UK in the organising process! Thank you so much. 19, August, 2015 Sally Kendall Convenor of ICCHNR 05 Welcoming Messages Finally, a conference such as this could not happen without all of you here, thank you for sharing your work and for coming to Seoul, we recognise this isn’t always easy. We wish you a very happy conference where you will enjoy new networks, make lasting friendships and become part of our global Community of Research Practice. Congratulatory Address The 6th International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research 06 The members of the Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing and distinguished guests, I would like to congratulate on the opening of the Sixth International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research and it is my pleasure to welcome participants from around the world for coming to Korea. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Insook Lee, the chairman of organization committee and staff who have organized this conference in Seoul. The theme of this conference is “Knowledge translation into Community Health Nursing” and we believe this conference will provide an environment to share good practice, disseminate research and strengthen collaborations and networks. Due to aging population, the life expectancy in Korea in 2012 was 81.3 years. However, a healthy life expectancy is reported to be 71 years, which has a 10 year gap between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy. It is not an overemphasis to say that the quality of life of elderly depends on the importance of health. Therefore, prevention is more important than treatment of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease and etc. The Ministry of Health and Welfare aims to increase the healthy life expectancy and achieve health equity by developing the fourth national health plan, which is to practice healthy lifestyle and effectively prevent and manage chronic diseases. Also, to provide diverse health promotion programs, we plan to improve policy by building connections with community health such as public health care center and etc. Furthermore, the public will be able to receive health care services according to lifecycle and we will provide an environment for the public to improve health. I would like to kindly ask participants to have interest in effective knowledge translation on health promotion according to specific life span, such as childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age and suggest healthy public policy. We hope discussions presented at this conference will be a starting point of providing healthy life to the public and at the same time, an opportunity to develop community health nursing practice. Once again, congratulations on the opening of the International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research 2015, Seoul. I wish all participants a good health and happiness. Thank you. 19, August, 2015 Hyungpyo Moon Minister of Health and Welfare, Korea Congratulatory Address 19, August, 2015 Nak-in Sung President of Seoul National University, Korea 07 Welcoming Messages It is my pleasure to congratulate for opening the 6th International Conference on Community Health Nursing. I would like to extend my thanks to Insook Lee, the chairman of ICCHNR committee, and Jeong Soon Kim, the President of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing for providing valuable input in developing this conference. Also, I would like to express my gratitude to Fiona Ross, the president of ICCHNR in UK and Sally Kendall, Patricia Wilson, Ros Bryar(co-convenors), and Clair Goodman, the members of ICCHNR committee for travelling long distances to be here with us today. Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing has contributed to developing community health policies and solving public health issues, such as community health, school health, occupational health, home healthcare, agricultural health, multicultural health etc. Furthermore, it has taken an important role in strengthening cooperation for the partnership of many countries for public health nursing. Recently, we have faced global issues that have threatened our public health, such as the spread of MERS, a new type of virus, global warming, environmental pollution, natural disasters and etc. Also, with the growing trend of chronic diseases caused by irregular lifestyles, it is our urgent task to develop an effective policy for prevention and management of chronic diseases. Public health problems mentioned above are not limited to any single country, but it is a common issue for the world. Therefore we believe that today’s conference will provide a perfect opportunity to share information on such issues and build cooperative relationships. Today’s conference will focus discussions on strengthening health promotion in order to solve health risk problems according to lifecourse. Furthermore, if we can create an environment to implement today’s discussion as we face population aging, we will be able to live a more prosperous life. It is my hope that this conference could bring out a productive discussion on public policy and practice and once again, congratulations on the International Conference on Community Health Nursing. Congratulatory Address Dear Colleagues and Friends, On behalf of Korean Society of Nursing Science, I would like to welcome all of you to the 6th International Conference on Community Health Nursing Research (ICCHNR) in Seoul. Congratulations on this academic festival and my sincere thanks go to International Collaboration for Community Health Nursing Research and Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing, especially Prof. Insook Lee, Prof. Fiona Ross, Prof. Sally Kendall, Prof. Jung Soon Kim, and Organizing Committee. This three-day international event has brought together researchers, professors, nurses, and professionals from all around the world. During the conference, the participants are expected to share research experience, creative and professional perspectives on “Knowledge Translation into Community Health Nursing Practice: Health Promotion through the Life Span”. I hope this conference be a great chance to fulfill your satisfaction, and to share your valuable experiences and build your worldwide network. 08 Finally, I hope you have meaningful and memorable time here in Seoul, where you can feel our warmhearted friendship and enjoy our culture.
