Students enrolled in a physical conditioning class take advantage of
facilities in the new, 6,250-sq. ft. Wellness Center on the St. Thomas
campus. The UVI Wellness Center opened on Sept. 24,2010 and
provides state-of-the-art equipment for aerobic, cardiovascular and
weight training.

Letter from the President
A University that
Speaks to our Needs
It is often said that a University cannot be all things to
all people. Therefore, many universities across the nation
try to find areas of expertise and focus, and attempt to
build their strengths around those selected areas. Other
colleges and universities have limited their enrollment to
a very select group of high performing students who
they feel will improve their position in the v arious ranking
systems that exist. Some community colleges are open
admissions institutions and cater to the needs of students
who may not have had a very academically successful high
school record. Strategic choices are important for every
institution and the University of the Virgin Islands is no
exception to this standard practice.
Yet our mission, location and singularity in the Virgin
Islands force us to speak to a mor e diverse and complex set
of educational, social and economic needs. UVI must be a
beacon of hope for the high achieving student as w ell as for
those who need a second chance. We must be an excellent
teaching institution, but we must also foster cutting edge
research that can advance our scientific knowledge and help
address complex social challenges. We must speak to the
needs of our students, faculty and staff , but we must also
speak to the needs of the community. An excellent example
of this last point is our B rothers With a Cause organization
that is focused on assisting our male students in their quest
for graduation, but is also committed to activ ely addressing
the crisis facing males within the Territory and the broader
Caribbean. There are so many other examples of ho w UVI
endeavors to balance our mandate to ser ve our students and
those around us. From our Cooperative Extension Service
and Agricultural Experiment Station programs, to our newly
approved Bachelor of Business Administration degree in
Hotel and Hospitality Management, UVI is constantly
striving to address the needs of both our internal and
external communities.
These multiple needs and challenges, which w e seek daily
to address, require that we have needed resources at our disposal. Therefore we are thankful for the support that we
consistently receive from the local government and from
private donors. Without that support we could not come
close to fulfilling our mission or addr essing a portion of
the myriad needs that exist at the U niversity and the Virgin
Islands. We highlight in this report the important generosity
from our private donors and I want to personally thank
all of our supporters and friends for their suppor t, both
monetary and non-monetary. In the years to come we must
develop even greater support from all sources if we are to
continue to address the existing complex issues and r espond
to emergent challenges.
Though cognizant that we cannot be all things to all
people, yet we must keep an open door and open hear t
to the people of the Virgin Islands and the concerns and
challenges they and we encounter. As the only institution
of higher education in the Territory, we cannot afford to
be insular and exist in isolation fr om the challenges of
today and the opportunities that the future holds. The
Virgin Islands will never achieve its greater calling if the
University of the Virgin Islands is not a thriving institution
of excellence in teaching, research and service. This is an
awesome burden that we carry, but we carry it with pride
and humility. Our major request is that our friends, alumni
and supporters will always travel with us on this majestic
journey of life, and that w e will remain faithful to each
other and to our endless possibilities. UVI speaks to needs,
for this University was born out of the need to ser ve the
people of this Territory. To this calling we pledge to always
remain true.

UVI History
The University of the Virgin Islands mission requires that
it address instruction, research and community service as it
enhances the lives of the people in the territor y and the region.
UVI fulfills its mission and vision thr ough the Small Business
Development Center, the Eastern Caribbean Center, the
Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the
Agricultural Experiment Station and other offices and
programs.
Students who come to UVI choose fr om a broad array of
associates and bachelors degree programs in more than 20
curriculum areas through each of its schools and colleges. UVI
also offers six masters degree programs, a post-masters degree
program in educational psychology, and certificate workforce
training courses through the UVI Community Engagement
and Lifelong Learning (CELL) area.
The University's 2,700 full-time, part-time and graduate
students come from the U.S. Virgin Islands, 21 U.S. states
and approximately 15 other countries, primarily in the
Eastern Caribbean. The multicultural student body has
the opportunity to participate in research, service learning,
internships and a variety of other learning experiences on
and off campus.
UVI's faculty is comprised of 250 highly qualified, fulltime and part-time members. Seventy percent of the full-time
faculty holds doctoral degrees.

Cooperative agreements between the University of the
Virgin Islands and many other leading univ ersities allow
UVI students to receive degrees and participate in learning
experiences not offered on the UVI campuses. The Boston
University School of Medicine cooperative agreement allows
UVI students, after meeting cer tain qualifications, to be
accepted provisionally into the medical school at the end of
their sophomore year. The University of Mexico agreement
provides the opportunity for students to become mor e
proficient in Spanish by spending a semester or y ear in
Mexico.
Students in St. Martin and the British Virgin Islands earn
bachelors degrees via cohort programs the University of the
Virgin Islands has established with the University of St. Martin
and H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Tortola,
respectively. UVI has also signed agr eements with two other
regional institutions, Dominica State College and Clarence F.
Bryant College in St. Kitts, which has made it possible for
graduates of these institutions to be admitted to upper-lev el
courses in baccalaureate degree programs at UVI.
The University of the Virgin Islands is increasingly being
recognized as a leading American institution of higher
education in the Caribbean.
A Letter from the Vice President for
Institutional Advancement
Dear UVI family,
Fiscal year 2010 was an exciting one for philanthropy
at UVI. Alumni giving – fr om those who know the
institution best – was at an all-time high. A pproximately
10 percent of our alumni gave back to UVI, the highest
percentage ever. If they do not demonstrate a
commitment to this University, why should others?
As a University dedicated to students’ success, we can
take pride in the fact that our graduates ar e doing well
and that they recognize the part UVI has played in their
success. In fiscal year 2009-10, we received $1.4 million
in annual giving, surpassing our goal and setting ne w
records. The message is getting out that suppor t for UVI
is helping students, the University, and our Virgin Islands
community move ahead.
We are determined to meet the goals of Vision 2012,
UVI’s strategic plan, as well as the priorities set b y
President Hall. Our mission is to enhance both student
success and the vitality of the territor y. We will reach out
to our alumni and friends to be our par tners in the quest
to build a fundamentally better UVI.

Alumni Pay it Forward...

throughout. They are evidence that renovations and upgrades are underway.
No one is happier about this than C ynthia Richards. She has
good reason to be. Richards is a Librarian III at the librar y. But
Richards is equally happy about the changes because she is
seeing her money at wor k. A long-time suppor ter of UVI,
Richards gets ex cited ev ery time she sees upgrades to the
campus, every time she interacts with ne w students and ev ery
time the University moves forward in meeting its mission.
“I firmly believe that you should give back to those
institutions that serve you well,” said Richards, a UVI alumna,
turned employee. “The College/University has been part of my
life for the most par t of 40 years.” After earning her bachelor’s
degree in Social Science from the then College of the Virgin
Islands (CVI) in 1973, Richards went on to complete a M aster
of Library Science degree and worked as a librarian for the VI
12 UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS 2009|2010 President’s Report
Department of Education. She worked as a part-time librarian
at the University since 1974. Following her retirement she
became a full-time UVI employee in 2000.
“Living in a small place, when y ou give to the University you
can see the direct impact it has on the students of the
Territory,” Richards said. “Over the years I have seen many of
my former elementary school students, now UVI students,
come here and use this librar y,” Richards said.
Richards has been giving to UVI for the past 17 y ears. Since
2000 she has given consistently through payroll deductions.
Richards does not restrict her gifts to a par ticular area. She
prefers to allow decision makers to use her gifts in ar eas they
deem most necessary.

deduction a “workable solution” for contributing to the
annual fund. “I understand what it takes to operate the
University,” said Rogers, the manager for Learning R esources
and Faculty Technology Service at UVI. “I understand that if
we don’t support UVI it will not be viable. I want it to be
viable. The territory will be a very different place without the
University.”
Rogers knows first-hand the impact UVI makes. As a
young woman with a family, she earned an associate’s degree
from CVI in 1977. “ The environment was very nurturing,”
Rogers said of CVI. “I was emplo yed as a student worker, I
was going to school, and I was activ ely involved in student
government.”
Contributions from Rogers have been consistently rolling
into UVI for the past 18 y ears. She encourages all UVI
employees to support the institution. “We spend our money
very easily on all sor ts of things,” Rogers said. “Payroll
deduction is the way to do it because y ou don’t have to think
about it.”

employees, for the first time ev er, it is now available to

Government Payroll Deduction Initiative. “It’s a milestone for
the institution and the community to together wor k on
initiatives which directly benefit our students, our futur e
leaders,” Linda I. Smith, UVI’s director of Alumni Affairs and
Annual Giving, said of the initiative. “There is no minimum
amount for a gift,” Smith said. “The community can also
designate which fund they want their contributions to go to .”
The UVI/VI Government Payroll Deduction Initiative
comes on the heels of the UVI on-line giving, which became
a reality on June 30, 2010. Anyone can give to UVI instantly,
via UVI’s website www.uvi.edu.
“I feel that the University has given me so much, so I want
to do something, give back, or pay it for ward as they say,”
Rogers said.
“To me it’s like an obligation that ev eryone should have,”
Richards said. Giving is as much about the r ecipient as it is
the giver. Richards summed it up nicely: “I t makes me feel
good.”
