PRESIDENT’S POST
Congregation
Beth-El
the
shofar
By Barbara Cohen
November is a time to give thanks (Thanksgiving) and to reenergize oneself.
Another thank you goes to Rabbi Edelman and Cantor Polt, our High
Holiday clergy, who did an excellent job. Additional thank you to various
committees for their many hours spent coordinating our wonderful services.
It was also a pleasure seeing many congregants attend our first Torah study
session during Yom Kippur afternoon.
Please continue to support our many programs and services which include
Hazak brunch, New Membership Recognition evening, joint program with
Chabad, Sisterhood Paid-Up Membership dinner, Sisterhood Evening of
Learning, New Years Eve party, Guest Rabbi and Rabbi audition weekends,
and our Kol Nidre appeal. Please refer to our flyers and emails for all dates
and times. We want you involved! We are here for you!

Looking ahead, we have some maintenance required around our synagogue
and Rabbi’s house. We also have an important long range planning committee
presentation scheduled for our November 20th Board/Congregation meeting
that I strongly urge congregants to attend. More information will be mailed.
The Jewish New Year coincided with the conclusion of baseball season. The
media’s focus centered on the end of the Derek Jeter era. He exemplified all
the positive qualities in a person-professionalism, integrity, dignity, teamwork,
leadership, a low personal profile, and doing things the “right” way. His legacy
is not his baseball skills (which ranks number six), but for what Mr. Jeter
stood for. He was truly passionate about one thing, which never changed:
playing baseball for the Yankees. It is my hope that we can be passionate
about supporting our synagogue and our functions. We need you!
This month we celebrate family and joyous events, including our synagogue
family. Jesse and I will become first time grandparents. What a joy!
Be grateful, happy, and healthy!

SISTERHOOD HAPPENINGS
PROGRAMS
Roberta Ackerman and Edie Tishler,
Co-Presidents
Carol Hirst-Chair
On Friday Night, October 10 the Succoth program began with
Friday Night services followed by our traditional Dinner in the
Hut meal. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and we
could not have our meal in the Hut. However, a Kiddush did
take place in the Hut...just in time to beat the rain. There were
35 attendees who enjoyed a delicious meal with more than
enough to go around! Dinner concluded with cookies and tea
or coffee. We look forward to a larger turnout in the future.
On December 21, comedian Mark Brier will be cracking jokes
in Rand Hall. A $5 contribution will allow us to provide a
luncheon for those who attend this event. This performance
takes place during the week of our Hanukkah celebration.
More details to follow in a flyer.
We are trying to start a new employment exchange open to
both Temple and non-temple members. If you are an
employer or know someone who is, we'd like to hear from
you. Depending on responses, we will move this program
forward. Carol's email is [email protected]

COMMENTS ON THE TORAH READING
Parashat Lekh Lekha
November 1, 2014 – 8 Heshvan 5775
God commands Abram to move his family to Canaan, promising him progeny and blessing. Shortly after arriving, a
famine forces them to go farther south to Egypt. There, Abram’s wife Sarai is taken by the Pharaoh, who is told that
she is Abram’s sister. When the truth is revealed, Abram and Sarai are allowed to return to Canaan with great wealth
in hand.
Abram separates himself from his nephew Lot after there is tension among their respective servants. But later, when
Lot is captured in battle, Abram organizes his rescue and defeats his captors.
Abram fears that he will die childless, but God promises that his descendants will be great and numerous. But when
Sarai appears to be barren, she asks her husband to procreate with her Egyptian maidservant, Hagar. Hagar becomes
pregnant, then runs away after Sarai treats her cruelly. God convinces her to return to the household, where she gives
birth to a son, Ishmael.
God commands Abram to circumcise both himself and Ishmael as a sign of God’s covenant.
Parashat Vayera
November 8, 2014 – 15 Heshvan 5775
Visited by three strangers, Abraham shows gracious hospitality. The strangers announce that Sarah will become pregnant. Sarah laughs at the suggestion.
God informs Abraham of plans to destroy Sodom and Amorah. Abraham, knowing that his nephew Lot lives in Sodom, convinces God to spare the cities if 10 righteous men could be found there. That proves impossible, so Lot and
his family are rescued from Sodom, narrowly escaping the wrath of their depraved neighbors. Lot's wife turns into a
pillar of salt after looking back at the destroyed cities. Thinking that they are the last people on earth, Lot's daughters
get their father drunk and causes him to impregnate them with sons.
Abraham and his family meet King Avimelech of Gerar. Sarah is identified as Abraham's sister, and the king captures
her; only God's intercession forces Avimelech to release her and the household. Abraham and Avimelech later agree
to a truce and establish the city of Be'er Sheva. Abraham and Sarah have a son, Isaac. When Sarah suspects Ishmael
of foul play, she banishes Ishmael and Hagar from the house. On the brink of death, Hagar is promised by God that
Ishmael will become the father of a great nation.
God commands Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah. Just before Abraham kills his son, an angel beckons
him to stop, promising him a strong legacy because of his willingness to listen to God. A ram is sacrificed in Isaac's
place.
Parashat Haye Sarah
November 15, 2014 – 22 Heshvan 5775
Sarah dies; Abraham mourns for her, then purchases the Cave of Machpelah to bury her. Abraham asks his servant to
find Isaac a wife in the land of Haran. After a long journey and much prayer, the servant finds a kind woman who
feeds him and his camel. The servant receives permission to take the woman, Rebecca, to Be’er Sheva to marry Isaac.
Rebecca’s presence is a great comfort to Isaac. Later, we read that Abraham married again and had more children.
Abraham dies and is buried by Isaac and Ishmael in Machpelah.
Page 11
PayrushayHaParashah
Comments on the Torah Reading continued…….
Parashat Toldot
November 22, 2014 – 29 Heshvan 5775
Rebecca, agonizing from being pregnant with twins, is told by God that her older child will one day serve the younger
child. Rebecca favors Jacob, the younger twin, while Isaac prefers Esau, a brash hunter who brings his father game.
One night, Esau returns home famished and agrees to give Jacob his birthright in exchange for stew.
Isaac’s ventures during adulthood mirror those of his father; he pretends his wife is his sister to protect his family from
King Avimelech. Later, Isaac and Avimelech make a treaty surrounding the wells that Isaac had dug.
Fearing imminent death, Isaac asks Esau to hunt him game, after which he would bless his elder son. Rebecca overhears and tells Jacob to kill an animal and impersonate his brother. Isaac is blind and, though suspicious, gives Jacob
the blessings he had intended for Esau. When Esau returns and learns what had happened, he threatens to kill his
brother. Jacob flees Be’er Sheva to look for a wife, while Esau, after disappointing his parents by marrying a Hittite
woman, finds another wife among the family of Ishmael.
Parashat Vayetze
November 29, 2011 – 7 Kislev 5775
Fleeing from his angry brother, Jacob falls asleep and dreams of a ladder with angels ascending and descending, and
God promising Jacob the blessings of his ancestors. Inspired, Jacob names the place Beth-El and continues to Haran.
Jacob falls in love with Rachel, and her father, Laban, agrees to let them marry if Jacob works for him for seven years.
But Jacob is tricked into marrying Rachel’s older sister, Leah, and only marries Rachel once he agrees to work another
seven years.
Jacob favors Rachel, but she is barren; Leah bears Jacob several sons. Jacob also has sons with Rachel’s and Leah’s
handmaidens. Finally, Rachel gives birth to Joseph; after years of sibling rivalry, Jacob has 11 sons and one daughter.
Jacob seeks independence from Laban after serving him for 20 years. Laban uses nefarious means to stand in Jacob’s
way, but they eventually reach an agreement.
Dear Friends at Congregation Beth-El,
We thank you so much for your generous contribution to the 13th annual Supplies for Success...Give Back
with a Backpack initiative to benefit Long Island’s disadvantaged children.
With your help, we were able to send more than 6,000 underprivileged children back to school with beautiful new backpacks filled with age-appropriate school supplies. Your support enabled us to relieve their
struggling families from the anxiety of meeting their child’s most basic needs. Thanks to your efforts, these
children started the school year with hope and confidence, and the tools they need to succeed.
On behalf of those who were touched by your kindness, we offer our sincere appreciation. We couldn’t have
done this without you. We hope you will join us in making a difference again next year.
Best wishes and warm regards

WHY SPONSOR AN ONEG

HUSTLING
FOR THE HOUSE
The word oneg comes from the same root (ayin,
nun, gimmel) as ta’anug, the Hebrew word for delight. “It is part of the very definition of Shabbat,”
explains Rabbi Panken. “Isaiah 58:13 reads,
‘V’karata l’Shabbat oneg,’ meaning ‘You shall call
the Shabbat an oneg or delight.’

There are many theories on exactly why we have
an oneg after Shabbat Services, but everyone
seems to agree that the oneg provides a time for
the community to come together, catch up with
members that live far away and greet new people.
It’s a time for noshing and schmoozing.
Thanx to you too!

or in memory of a loved one, or just because. Regardless of why you choose to sponsor, the act of
doing it is and honor and a mitzvah.

YOU MUST THINK OF THAT TIME NOW
We don’t like to think of it, nor do we like to talk of
it, but every man and woman must consider the
inevitable: death and burial. To procrastinate is to
burden loved ones with concerns one can take
care of now. To put off the purchase of graves for
tomorrow is to add costs at the time of burial.
Congregation Beth-El has cemetery grounds at
Wellwood Cemetery in Pinelawn, N.Y. and
Breslau Cemetery in Lindenhurst N.Y. The cost of
an individual gravesite is:
Members: $400 each
Parents of Members: $750 each
Others: $2,500 each (Wellwood)
$2,250 each (Breslau)
Contact the synagogue office 541-0740,
Avrum Bloomstone, Allan Hausman, or Harvey Fleck for further details.
