Program History
Who Benefits From Crime Stoppers?
Crime Stoppers began in 1976 in Albuquerque New Mexico, after the tragic murder of a young gas
station attendant named Michael Carmen. While working the midnight shift this 19 year old victim
was robbed of $43.00 cash and four cartons of cigarettes and then shot and killed by two armed
suspects. Greg MacAleese, a Canadian born detective, was called in to investigate. Because the
crime occurred on a busy street, he knew that there had to be many witnesses to the crime and yet
no one would come forward. After months of investigating with no leads, MacAleese approached
a local television station to re-enact the crime and ask for the publics help. A $1000 reward was
offered and a tips line was set up. Callers were promised anonymity – they would not have to identify
themselves or testify in court. The show was called Crime Stoppers. Within 24 hours of airing, the
case was solved.
Everyone benefits … except the criminal
• Criminals are apprehended, prosecuted and convicted
• Stolen property is recovered
• Drugs are taken off the streets
• Hundreds of investigative hours are saved
How Does It Work?
When someone has information about a crime he or she calls 1-800-222-8477. Our telephones are
answered 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Calls are not recorded and Crime Stoppers does not have
call display, guaranteeing your identity remains anonymous. You will not have to attend court. You
can also enter a tip on line by visiting our website at www.valleytips.ca. Once the caller provides
information about a crime they are then issued a code number which you will identify yourself with
in all future dealings with Crime Stoppers. Your information is given to the respective investigating
agency. You are then instructed to call back at a designated time to see if you are eligible for an
award. If an arrest has been made or charges laid you qualify for an award up to $2000.00. We do
not require a court conviction to pay a reward.
What is Crime Stoppers?
Crime Stoppers is a non-profit community program involving the
cooperative efforts of the police, the community and the media.
It encourages people to call Crime Stoppers with information to
solve crimes already committed, ones about to occur, and or the
whereabouts of wanted persons or missing persons, narcotics or
stolen property.
How Can You Get Involved?
Crime Stoppers works, but needs your support, if it is to continue to be successful. A group of
concerned citizen volunteers serve on the Board of Directors to oversee the program. More volunteers
are always needed to assist with the program. Fundraising is needed to pay for the rewards given,
as well as for promotional material for the program. No government funding is received to run the
program. Citizen involvement is our greatest asset in assisting law enforcement. Together we can
make Pembroke/Renfrew County a safer place to live in. We ask only that you call Crime Stoppers to
let them know about criminal activity you may have information about.

Crime Stoppers is based on the simple principle that for every crime
committed, someone other than the criminal has information that
would solve the crime. Citizens from the community often witness
all or parts of a crime without being aware of what they have seen.
They may unknowingly have information that is the key to solving
the crime. In some cases citizens are hesitant to contact the police
in fear of retaliation from the criminal. People from the community
may not come forward because they are uncertain about who to
contact in the police organization and concerned about what will
happen after they do. Crime Stoppers recognizes the reluctance
of many citizens to become personally involved and guarantees
anonymity to those who provide information. Crime Stoppers
provides a method for the community to overcome these obstacles
and yet become involved in solving crime.
