May/June in review
Aldergrove Zoo
On Tuesday, May 7 a group of residents went to the Greater Vancouver Zoo (or as
we call it- the Aldergrove Zoo). Annie, David, Harriet, Harold, Helen, Janet, Nancie,
and Evelyn W went along with Carly, Starla and volunteers, Patty, Rita and Jane. It
was a really good outing. It would’ve been great to have a “zoo guide” and take
our own bus in as they sometimes do in the off-season months, but the group
enjoyed the tour on the train with an excellent train ride driver!
Clova Theatre
The movie shown at the Clova Theatre in May was called “Safe Haven” and in
June they showed “Epic”. Most of the residents enjoyed the movies.
Grad Fashion Show
Some of our nailcare volunteers were graduating from Lord Tweedsmuir School
this year, and they volunteered to do a Grad Fashion Show for us a couple of
weeks after their graduation. There was a large crowd gathered for the show, and
the young ladies looked beautiful in their lovely gowns!!! Thank you so much for
doing that for us. Congratulations and good luck in the future!
Fashion Friday at Zion Park Manor
What a great event on Friday, May 10th, the Friday before Mother’s Day!
Many ladies were willing to model one of their own favourite outfits at the
Fashion Show and many other people came out to watch. Thank you so much to
our wonderful volunteers, Julie and Lori, who were the hosts of our Fashion
Friday Show!!! They are fashion experts themselves, always dressed up when they
come to volunteer at the Manor. They did a great job interviewing our models
and showcasing their beautiful outfits! They also had a scarf-tying demonstration
and showed quite a number of different ways to tie a scarf.
Thank you to our models. Thanks to Carly and Donna for organizing the models
and thank you to Julie and Lori for hosting the show!!
Julie and Lori, both long-time volunteers at Zion Park Manor, were the lovely
hosts of FASHION FRIDAY at Zion!

Rodeo Pancake Breakfast
We had our annual Rodeo Pancake Breakfast on Thursday, May 16 at Zion Park
Manor. It was a lot of fun! Residents, families and staff all joining in. Take a look at
some of these great photos!
More great pics of the Pancake Breakfast! Thank you to our maintenance man,
Ken, for flipping pancakes that morning! Great job- you’re hired for years to
come!
Special Breakfasts
Garden Level residents had a Special Breakfast on Thursday, May 23. They had
pancakes topped with whipped cream, fruit and syrup, and sausages, and another
special breakfast in June.
Harold, Erwin, Jason, Peter, Ed, Don, Oscar, Frank and Allen all attended the
Men’s Breakfast of bacon and eggs and hash browns in May. Many thanks to our
wonderful volunteer cook, Ken! It was enjoyed by all! And he made another great
breakfast in June as well.
Micki is becoming our volunteer chef for our Ladies Breakfast! Marilyn B, Roni O,
Pat G, Jay M, Ruby G, Kay S, Eileen T, Harriet M, Nancy W and Esther N were at
the Ladies Breakfast on May 2. Micki made a bacon and egg breakfast for the
ladies that morning, and afterwards she showed them a video on her IPAD of her
swimming. It was a great morning with lots of visiting. In June Micki made a great
breakfast of French toast, strawberries and bacon for the ladies on Thursday, June
6. Thanks so much Micki! We sure appreciate you!
Although these breakfasts are in-house, please up in the binder by the Activity
Office if you are interested in attending. There is limited space at these programs.
Shopping & Lunch
The residents went to Walmart for an afternoon of shopping on Tuesday, June 11.
It was an excellent trip, and almost everyone bought something. Some had a list
of desired purchases so it was fun to find all the items. Thank you so much to our
volunteers, Rita, Jane and Bill, who were great shopping partners!
McDonald’s Lunch
Garden Level residents voted to have take-out McDonalds for their special lunch
on Monday, June 17. It was a beautiful day and about 20 residents joined in and
enjoyed their lunch out in the courtyard, picnic-style. It was so nice to have lunch
outdoors! Thanks to Carly and Starla for organizing this event!
Barbecues at Zion
Barbecue season has started and we had our first two barbecues at Zion in June.
On Monday, June 24 we had a barbecue in Clover Garden and then we had a
barbecue on Terrace on Thursday, June 27. Both had to be indoors because that
whole week was rainy, but both barbecues were a great success!!! We will be
having a barbecue on each floor during the summer months. Rain or shine we will
go ahead on the scheduled dates! Families are welcome to attend, but we ask
that families please purchase their tickets from the front reception desk by the
FRIDAY BEFORE the barbecue as arrangements have to be made, extra tables and
chairs need to be set up and the food has to be ordered by the kitchen ahead of
time. In the past we have sometimes had up to 20 guests requesting to join in at
the last minute, and we unfortunately are not able accommodate this. We’d love
to have you join us, but please plan ahead and purchase your BBQ tickets early!
Thank you so much.
Volunteer News
Summer Months
You may notice that some of our wonderful volunteers are taking a bit of a break
for holidays! We’ll let them!!!! We hope they have a well-deserved rest.
 Did you know that some of our volunteers have been faithfully helping our
residents for over 20 years!!!
 Did you know that some of our volunteers put in many, many hours per
month at Zion Park Manor?
 Did you know that some volunteers have only called in sick once or twice in
years?
What faithfulness!!!!! Whether many hours or few- we appreciate every one of
our volunteers very much for the role that they have at Zion Park Manor. We have
such great volunteers!!!!! Let’s remember to THANK THEM!
Welcome
…to our new volunteers - Gurtirath Kang, Hans Chan and Samantha Punch.
Needed
… a volunteer who would be willing to download music onto an IPOD from CDs
for use in our activity programs. Please talk to Chris (Activities) if you are able to
help us out with this task.
Family Members
We would like to offer many opportunities for our residents to get out into the
community in our Manor Bus, but we need your help!!! If you are ABLE and
willing to assist us by volunteering on a bus outing even one or two times during
the summer months, we would really appreciate it. Please talk to Chris Mulat
(Director of Activities & Volunteers)
Music Therapy Private One-to-one Sessions
We have a wonderful Music Therapy program here at Zion Park Manor. Many of
you have seen the various small and larger group sessions facilitated by our Music
Therapists, but many of you may not know about our private one-to-one sessions
done by our Music Therapist. These are especially effective when a resident tends
to isolate themselves in their room and is lonely but really would like someone to
spend some time with them. Or for those who are depressed and need to talk or
do a life review. Music Therapy is also very important when a resident becomes
palliative- even for those who seem passive or are unresponsive. Music is known
to somehow make its way through the senses. A Music Therapist may connect
with a patient through their song choice, lyric discussion, listening to music, song
writing, life review, singing and playing instruments or relaxation to music
techniques. It could be an active or passive music experience. Our Music
Therapist strives to get to know the resident and their past or present music
preferences. Every music therapy session is individualized based on current
functioning, goals and preferences.
Music therapy can:








Reduce anxiety and promote relaxation
Increase physical comfort and decrease pain perception
Enhance non-verbal or verbal communication and self-expression
Increase social interaction
Facilitate a life review
Increase family communication and coping
Emotional comfort
Spiritual support
Our Music Therapist is paid for on contract by the residents or their families. If
you are interested in this service, please make arrangements with the
receptionist.
If you have further questions, feel free to talk with Chris Mulat or our Music
Therapist, Janine Magaw. We would be pleased to assist you with this.
Filling in a few sessions this summer is our previous Music Therapist, Lorri (Watson) Johnson!!!
The Art Program at Zion Park Manor
Art Shows
Have you noticed the display in the front foyer of the amazing artwork done by
our very own residents? We had an Art Show in June of the artwork done by all of
our resident artists who work in the Art Room. Next month we will feature an
individual “Artist of the Month” again.
Art in the Garden
Most summers we try to get our artists outside for our Art in the Garden sessions
so that they can get inspired by the nature around them. So on Thursday
mornings if it is nice weather out, the art room will be closed and the group will
head outside of Park Terrace for a special craft session.
The Travelling Weaver
For a few Wednesdays in August, Judy will be our travelling weaver, visiting
residents in their rooms to show them a little about weaving and the fibre arts. It
should be very interesting!
Staff News
Welcome to…
-Michael Levellee, new cook and dietary aide.
-Chris Ruiter, who is with us through a Government Summer Work Program
helping with maintenance around the Manor during July and August.
Fund-raising Update
Thank You… to the families and friends of our Clover Garden neighbourhood,
who make donations towards musical entertainment for our residents in Clover
Garden. When you see them enjoying the music – singing, dancing and toes
tapping, you know it makes such a difference!
Just a Reminder:
If you enjoy coming to Happy Hour and listening to the
music, please support our 50/50 Draws as this helps to pay for our entertainers.
Resident Computer-
A while ago, a very generous family donated this
brand-new computer for our residents. The computer is now in need of an
upgrade of its Anti-virus Protection which will cost about $70. If would like to
donate towards this, please make your donation at the reception desk and
indicate if you would like to receive a tax receipt.
Needed: If you are “Spring” Cleaning- keep in mind that we are collecting more
items for our reminiscing kits. Old photos or items are needed for these themes:






farming
household chores
school days
sewing/needlework
sports
transportation/travel
…or any other treasures from the good ol’ days that you might come across.
(Items should be able to fit into our reminiscing bins which are the size of a file
box.) Thanks so much for keeping us in mind. Please talk to Chris (Activities)
Special Events Coming up in the Summer months…
Canada Day Tea
Join us on Monday, July 1st at 2:00 PM in the Multipurpose Room when we will
celebrate Canada Day with cake and tea.
Bus Outings
During the summer months we have a number of outings and picnics planned at
various local parks in order to give all of our residents a chance to get out into the
community. We will have posters up advertising each outing. Please sign up if you
are interested in going along, but realize that we have limited spaces, especially
wheelchair spaces, and may need to make some adjustments.
Also watch the notice boards for any changes due to inclement weather. In the
case of rain, we may change our destination to a restaurant instead.
Bus Drives
There are also many bus drives planned for July and August. For these drives we
don’t have sign up lists as we usually try to take residents along who are unable to
go on the other Manor Bus Outings. Activity staff will plan who they will take
along on these drives in order to give everyone a chance to go. If there is space
left just prior to leaving, we will fill in with others.
Summer Treats
Watch the activity calendar for when we will serve some special summer treats,
berries and ice cream, teas, floats and smoothies. Yum!
