Italian Tomato Garden
An old Italian lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual
tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard. His
only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a
letter to his son and described his predicament:
“Dear Vincent, I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won’t be
able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I
know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days. Love,
Papa”
A few days later he received a letter from his son. “Dear
Pop, Don’t dig up that garden. That’s where the bodies are
buried. Love, Vinnie”
At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police
arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies.
They apologized to the old man and left.
That same day the old man received another letter from his
son. “Dear Pop, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That’s the
best I could do under the circumstances. Love you, Vinnie”

You know summer’s coming to an end when announcements for the
Southern AZ Harley Riders Rodeo in Benson start showing up. This is
always a good time. See page 11 and mark your calendars!
As you’ve seen from our cover, this edition marks our 11th Anniversary
of publishing AZ Rider. That’s 131 issues, counting this one.
We want to say thank you to our regular contributors for their input
over the years. Left to right on the cover are Tush, Slider, Beaux, Lady
Jewells, Sidekick, Snakebite, Kathi Calahan, Margie, Scooter T, Bobbi J,
and Undertaker.
We truly appreciate our advertisers. And we again ask our readers to
please remember to let businesses know when you see them in AZ Rider.
We know there are options out there and these days marketing budgets are
being trimmed to the bone. We will continue to do our best to give you
great value and keep your name out there in the community; as we have
over the past 11 years.
Thanks also to our readers. We have some fans who have actually kept
each copy since that first one, back in September 1999. That is both amazing and humbling…. Considering that many old newspapers are used to
line pet cages and wash windows. We welcome the reinforcement from
you that we are doing a good job in the biker community.
Speaking of fans, we’ve started a Facebook page. Some folks would
say ‘finally’.  So we hope that you will look up AZ Rider Motorcycle
News and become a Friend.
Our web readers are also voting for us to be ranked in the Top 50 Biker
Websites. We hope that you will cast your vote for us too. We’re currently
in the Top 10 and have been as high as #3, thanks to you, our readers.
There are links on each page of azridersouthwest.com.
We love what we’re doing and the part that we play in the Biker Community. It gives us opportunities that we might not otherwise have …
meeting people and visiting places. We’re proud to be in continuous publication for 11 years and plan to be here for many years to come.
So for now, we’ll leave it at that. And wish you all a good month of
safe riding.....
Keep your butts on your putts!

Rumble in the Rubies
4
As I rolled into Elko, NV in the late
afternoon on Thursday June 17, I turned to
my girlfriend with a questioning look on
my face and said.... “if they’re havin’ a rally
here they better get some bikers here quick,
cuz I haven’t seen a single one.” This town
looked like every other town in the west I’ve
been to. People were goin’ bout their regular
life. Stores and businesses were doin’ normal business. There didn’t seem to be any
bikers anywhere as I looked round town. I
was startin’ to get concerned when I seen a
sign that said ‘Rumble in the Rubies’ with
an arrow sayin’ this way. Cuz I didn’t come
700 miles thru Arizona and Nevada to get an
ice cream cone.... Well I did, I just wanted to
get it at a rally!
As I approached the rally I started to see
it was exactly in the center of town. There
were two one-way streets that went for a half
mile each; one south and one northbound.
All along those streets were businesses that
had a big part to do with this rally. They were
there with open arms, offering everything
from free bottled water to Bikini Bike washes. Several were bars that had bands playing
in front or on the streets. And oh yes... vendors and motorcycles lined the streets.... and
people everywhere... and let me remind you,
this is just Thursday.
By Friday morning the real fun had
started, and motorcycles were rollin’ in
from every point in the western world. I saw
groups from Seattle to Texas and California
to Nebraska and everywhere in between.
Most rode hundreds of miles to attend this
10th annual event. Hell’s Angels, Bandidos,
Sons of Silence, and many different MCs,
Associations, and riding groups all came to
this little town in the mountains in peace and
harmony.
I met and talked with many different
groups and clubs.... One that stands out was
called “Phuckits”. They were a bunch of
nice guys out of Iowa... I took lots of pix of
the different patches, and even met a couple
Biker/Musicians that invited me to play bass
with them on Saturday evening at a jam session in one of the local bars.
I think what amazed me the most was
only 45% of the attendance was bikers. It
was mostly people from Elko that made up
the greater half of this event. That tells me
that Elko is a smart town to put on a biker
event and involve the whole town. It was
like goin’ to the county fair, only Biker
Style. They had a $5,000 poker run, gave
away several ATVs, and prizes for the bike
games on Friday & Saturday afternoons.
I didn’t count ‘em but I’d bet there were
over 300 vendors within that half mile in the
center of town. The food was awesome. I saw
about 40 food vendors... and even found one
that was makin’ his own ice cream. Powered
by an early 1920’s John Deere gasoline engine with a big pulley and a fan belt made of
leather, that rig turned some of the best ice
cream on this side of the damn planet.
I think this run is goin’ on my calendar
for next year. I liked what I saw. I liked the
Karma that the event provided. I liked the
food and the selection of vendors and goods
on display. And I liked all the fellow bikers
that made it all possible. I really liked seeing
that people are no longer afraid of bikers...
and that in Elko.... Bikers are considered as
equals in their community. See ya next year,
Rumble in the Rubies.
Live like it’s your last day on Earth...

In Memory of Jeremy Bebout
Hi Bruce & Betsy
Every month I pick up a copy of your paper and
enjoy looking at the great pics and reading the articles. From time to time I have read about riders passing on, benefits being held for their families, and also
notation about bikers not being seen until it’s too late.
Awareness is everything! Unfortunately, that’s what
I’m writing to you about.
Back on March 24, 2010 my friend Jeremy Bebout was riding southbound on Signal Butte Road
when an elderly driver turned right in front of him.
Jeremy couldn’t stop in time. It wasn’t pretty. Jeremy passed away just a few hours later at Scottsdale
Osborn. Please understand, I do understand that accidents do happen, thus the name ‘accident’; but what
I don’t understand is how it never made the evening
news or even the local papers, not to mention azcentral.com.
Every time I turned to azcentral.com before Jeremy’s death, I saw weekly (at least) headlines about
a motorcycle accident or fatality involving motorcyclists. But never for Jeremy! I guess it may have
something to do with the fact that he was in a motorcycle club. Unfortunately, the general public has been
lead to believe that ‘clubs’ are bad, outlaws, or common criminals. You can thank your local law enforcement agencies for that misconception. Motorcycle
clubs are friends, family members who enjoy going
out to ride together and hang out with others. They
open their doors and their hearts to the public with a
smile.
Unfortunately, Jeremy wasn’t news worthy. Less
than 1 week after his accident, 10 bikers were hit
from behind in the west valley. Several died on scene.
News, ground and helicopter, showed the scene – it
was horrifying and tragic. God Bless those poor riders and their families.
But there was never anything about Jeremy.
No news, no papers, no online articles, nothing. He
man, a new father to a beautiful little girl named Elva
Lynn. He was a man who loved his fiancée Kristina;
who loved his mother, father, brothers and sisters. He
was a person! A person who didn’t matter enough to
have his life or death put in print, stating “another
motorcyclist killed by drivers who don’t look out for
motorcycles.”
So, I ask that Jeremy’s death not get ignored because of a patch on his back. I ask that our general
public know that regardless of what one wears; they
are a person, with people that love them. And I feel
like ‘club members’ are being singled out by the ‘Joe
Public’ as ‘bad guys’.
Let’s take a moment to remember those who have
lost their lives while riding because people don’t pay
attention while driving. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Deb Pierce, Mesa, AZ
On Sunday, March 28 a benefit was held at Moe’s
on the Green (formerly Benchwarmers) in Mesa; on
Power Rd. between Southern and Broadway on the
east side of the street. The beneficiary was the young
family of 32-year old Jeremy Bebout, a member of
the Devil’s Own MC. As Deb’s letter explains, he had
been killed earlier in the week by a vehicle turning
in front of him. By talking to people at the event, we
heard reports that the vehicle cut him off so close
that there was no chance to even hit the brakes.
It was heartwarming to see such a strong showing of support on such short notice; with at least 18
clubs and organizations coming out to pay their respects.

10NR23 - MRF News Release
“LIVABILITY”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
4 August 2010
The newest buzz word circulating the halls of Congress is “livability.” The term has been applied
to all sorts of issues related to the
environment and energy, and the
Motorcycle Riders Foundation
(MRF) has learned that the term is
now being applied to transportation
issues as well.
The United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and
Urban Affairs passed S. 1619, the
Livable Communities Act (LCA),
on Tuesday, August 3, 2010. LCA
establishes a new federal office that
would issue grants to develop and
implement “livable communities.”
The bill passed through the committee with a party line vote; 13 Dem-
ocrats voted for and 10 Republicans
voted against the measure. The U.S.
Senate is set to adjourn for the August recess this week, so it is highly
unlikely that S. 1619 will make to
the floor for a full vote. Even if that
were to happen, it is unclear if the
majority party has the votes needed
for passage.
Here is how LCA’s supporters
see things as “livable.” They envision halting development of currently undeveloped suburban properties
because urban sprawl has spread our
cities too thin, and driving or riding
by residents who live in suburbs
is causing too much pollution and
wasting too much gasoline. Instead,
they want to mandate that all new
developments be in metropolitan
areas where people can take mass
transit and walk to their jobs, shopping and entertainment. It’s what
LCA refers to as “compact development.”
LCA would remove lanes of
travel from car and motorcycle users
and give them to bicyclists and pedestrians. Walking and pedaling are
both great, but they don’t pay into
the system as it exists. States will
no longer have control over their
own destinies. If an area of a state
or town is declared “unlivable,”
no future infrastructure developments would occur. LCA supporters believe the result will be to force
Americans out of their cars and off
their motorcycles so that they will
use less energy and pollute less, all
at the demand of the federal government. The MRF believes that reducing traffic lanes would result in
more traffic gridlock, actually causing more energy use and pollution.
The bottom line is that the
choice to operate a motor vehicle
should be that of the operator, not
Washington DC bureaucrats. LCA
both discriminates against and punishes Americans who use vehicles
that burn gasoline.
The MRF will keep you updated
on this and all other legislation that
impacts motorcyclists.

Sonny Barger’s Book Signing at Jugg’z Saloon
online,click title
for more photos
Sonny Barger, 71, has published his sixth
book, ‘Let’s Ride: Sonny Barger’s Guide to Motorcycling How to Ride the Right Way — for
Life,’ co-written with Darwin Holmstrom.
Despite his age, Barger — an Army veteran
who was raised during World War II and taught
to buy American, still logs almost 25,000 miles
annually. That’s half as much as he used to ride
but far more than many riders put on their bikes
in a lifetime. His secret for keeping the shiny
side up is luck. “No matter how good you are,”
says Barger, “you can be sitting at a stoplight
when a truck comes up behind you and runs you
over. It’s all luck.” Luck, though, has a lot to
do with preparation, which is why Barger felt
compelled to write a rider’s guide. “Everybody wants to be a motorcycle rider today, and
they’re getting killed. I see more and more 40
year old and older, first time riders dying.” he
says, noting that motorcycle fatalities increased
for 11 straight years through 2008. “We wanted
to write a book on what not to do.” ‘Let’s Ride’
is full of nots: not riding when angry, not riding while drunk or on drugs, not believing other
drivers’ turn signals, not learning to ride from a
friend. Some of this he’s learn the hard way, by
doing it himself. Sonny says he hopes this book
helps new riders. He is very thankful and feels
very lucky to live the life he lives today.
B1, a friend of Sonny’s, asked if the book
signing could also be used to help a young lady,
27 year old Tiffany Tate who has lived in Arizona her entire life; mainly in Chandler. She was
born with a blockage in her intestines. Shortly
after surgery to correct the blockage she was
tested and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and
is now in need of a lung transplant. Sonny was
kind enough to allow the fundraising campaign
in Tiffany’s honor. All donations are tax-deductible and will be administered for her transplantrelated expenses only. To make a donation please
go to www.benefitforTiffany.com.
This event took place on June 19 at Jugg’z
Saloon 851 South Arizona Avenue in Chandler,
AZ 85225 480-963-9804. This is a very biker
friendly, fun, neighborhood bar in Chandler.
Shelly Howard purchased the old Chandler
landmark Pecos Lounge on January 25th, 2010.
Since then they have made a 100% turn around
in this local bar. Jugg’z is open at 10am MonFri, 6:30am on Sat, & 8am on Sunday. It’s open
until 2am every night! Happy hour is Mon-Fri,
from 3 pm to 7 pm: with $1.00 drafts, $2.00 well
and domestic bottles. They also have daily drink
specials, food, events, and mostly a lot of fun.
Jugg’z has pool tables, dart boards, & plenty
of bike parking out front. Pool tournaments are
Monday nights at 7 pm, with a $5.00 entry fee.
Wednesday is bike & ladies night, with 25 cent
drafts & free pool from 8 pm to 10 pm, Friday
& Saturday feature a live rock n roll band. And
there’s never a cover charge. Shelly would like
to thank all the true friends she has made and
thank everyone for their support. So make sure
to stop by and say “Hi”.

Too Broke For Sturgis
ABATE of AZ’s 19th annual Too Broke For
Sturgis was held at Mormon Lake Lodge July 2325. What an OUTSTANDING weekend! This is
one of the last of ‘em folks... A good ol’ campin’
out, partyin’ down. adults-only, biker run. Scooter folk from around the state and further away
started rolling in on Wednesday to stake out
campsites and get a headstart on the weekend.
We haven’t been to Too Broke in quite a few
years, so we were REALLY looking forward to
being there. We rolled in on Friday, set up camp,
and dove in. Thank you, Lady Jewells, for trucking our tent & such up there for us. Thanks also
to our brothers & sisters of the Mountain Motorcycle Association for saving us an awesome
camp spot.
Friday had rain off and on. This is monsoon,
so it’s to be expected. When packing, you want
to allow for it. But bikers come despite the rain.
They were rewarded by a beautiful Saturday.
The itinerary gives you as much or as little
to do as you wish. There’s pretty much always
something to do… games for watching or playing, vendors to shop, rides to take, etc. Too structured? Spend time in the camping area, visiting
with old friends and meeting new ones. For those
who find people watching to be a favorite past
time, there was a variety of colorful characters
and revealing outfits.
The games were a hoot; with lots of participation and spectators. Lady Jewells wrote about
them. Her full report on the People Games and
Bike Games with photos is bookmarked in the
online edition.
Music for the weekend came from the
Fryed Brothers Band. They did their usual excellent job, mixing originals and covers for 2
kick-ass nights of music and dancing. We want
to thank Harry of the Fryed Brothers Band
{www.fryedbrothersband.com}for permission to

add their music to our Too Broke presentations,
posted on our AZ Vision webpage. If you were
there, you know how good they sounded. If you
weren’t there, you can get a feel of what was going on, and hear some of the music we were enjoying.
Before the band started on Friday night, the
Ms Too Broke 4 Sturgis contest took place. Congratulations to Ms Jewels. In talking with her
afterwards we learned that this was her first trip
to Too Broke. She seemed very excited to have
won.
The tattoo contest was held during the band
break on Friday night. Fortunately, the rain that
had kept all of us under the big top let up long
enough to allow everyone to gather around the
stage in the arena for this competition. A lot of
beautiful ink was being displayed; ranging from
small pieces to very large. The show lasted well
over an hour; having many participants - both
men and women. It would have been very difficult to be on that panel of judges.
One gal was perhaps too hammered to realize
that she was in the tattoo contest and the titty contest wasn’t until the next night. But it’s doubtful
that the guys in the audience minded. 
The men’s competition concluded with one
contestant showing all. He had a flying penis tattooed to his butt cheek. Yeah… You pretty much
had to be there……. I’m sure his friends told him
all about it the next day.
Winners were: Muskrat 3rd, Jimbo 2nd, Hawg
Man 1st; Geraldine 3rd, Dawn Clark 2nd, Freebird 1st.
Saturday’s Poker Run offered a number of
route options, depending on how many miles you
felt like putting on. With destinations in Williams,
Sedona, and Winslow, all were good choices.
The bike show had a good turnout. Winners
were determined by a combination of peer judg-

ing and people’s choice. Contestants voted for 1
bike in each category. Spectators voted for one
bike in the show. There were 7 classes. Winners
of each are listed in the online continuation.
While walking through the campgrounds we
came across an impromptu burnout pit. We got
some good footage and will get that posted to AZ
Vision, too.
As the sun went down, the Fryed Brothers
took to the stage for another show. The Wet Tshirt Contest took place during their break. Well,
we all know that Wet T stands for more than tee
shirts. The bleachers were packed for this event.
Meltdown was in the thick of it; getting pix of
the gals as they showed off their attributes with
style and enthusiasm. In the end ‘Cowgirl’ was
the winner, collecting $250. Over 18? Check out
the slideshow in the AZ Vision gallery.
After the contest it was time for the 50/50
drawing. $1,485 went to the lucky winner, Crystal M. Then the band cam back and the party
rolled on.
When Sunday morning came around, everyone we spoke with had had a much better night’s
sleep than Friday. No more unruly souls such as
we mentioned in last month’s edition. We won’t
waste any more time or space on those dickheads
here. If you didn’t see it yet, you can click in to
that story online from here.
Too Broke For Sturgis is ABATE’s annual
fundraiser. It helps support the MasterLink newsletter, and ABATE’s other activities which help
protect Motorcyclists’ Rights in AZ. We observed
32 organizations showing their support during
the weekend; between clubs and associations.
And there were many independent riders there as
well. Next year is Too Broke #20. You do NOT
want to miss that one.
We hope to see you there ~

From Military To Civilian – A Seamless Transition
When members of the Armed Forces of the United States finish at least
one year of their tour of deployment they need to enroll in the Veterans
Administration (VA) program to obtain any VA Health Benefits they may be
entitled to receive. Service members need to enroll PROMPTLY
and do it NOW by following these steps:

AND GOOD LUCK”

DEAR HARRY: The reasons for beards are many. It originally was an evolutionary thing in which the beard and body hair kept the body warm. With
the invention of heating systems and the shaving razor, some men began to
cut hair from their faces. The ones who have beards today want to imitate
ZZ Top or keep their faces warm when riding the bike in cold weather. The
beard also catches ketchup, mustard and other sauces from getting onto your
clothes. Military pilots have to go thru survival training so if shot down,
they learn to catch, cook and eat bugs and plants. Earlier motorcycles were
well known to break down constantly and most times occurred in remote
areas. Bikers would then comb their beards for bugs and debris caught in
their beards to cook and survive.
DEAR BP: I am a female and want to ride a motorcycle. Most women I see
at cycle events prominently display their cleavage. Is there a reason for this?
Mammary Momma
DEAR MAMMARY: Cleavage is a natural evolutionary thing similar to
beards for men mentioned above. Having cleavage is required if you are going to be a motorcyclist. The cleavage can catch and collect bugs and debris
that can be used to cook and eat for survival if your bike breaks down.
DEAR BP: I have an opportunity to buy a motorcycle characterized as a
“Rigid.” Would that be wise.
Kid Knee
DEAR KID: I would suggest you look elsewhere for a motorcycle. The
Rigid was invented by Kidney Surgeons and Kidney Belt Manufacturers as
a way to increase their businesses. Unless you don’t mind being lucky to
have at least 1 functioning kidney and don’t mind wearing a huge kidney
belt, go for it.
DEAR M: The reason for this is simple. In order to prevent women from
being singled out and pursued at establishments, it deters any stalkers. A
secondary benefit is that if the female passes out or gets lost, her significant
other can be found.

Obtain a copy of your service medical records prior to discharge.
Do not take any shortcuts when separating and do this immediately. Any idea
of hurrying to get home may cost you time and money should you require VA
Healthcare at any time in the future.

A veteran has two years, after separation, to apply for medical conditions that are a result of their service in the military. After two years the
process becomes more difficult.

If you require medical assistance from the VA after separation/

Brotherly Love-In
July 17, 2010... Love flowers, beads, tie dye
and leather could be seen in an abundance at the
3rd Annual ‘Brotherly Love In’ presented each
year by the MMA Leather District. This is always a fun event, colorful and a bit of a blast
from the past with hula-hoop and paddleball
contests, ‘Best Tie Dye’ and 60’s music in the
background.
The event was held this year at Max’s Sports
Bar located on the corner of 47th Ave and Ocotillo. I never even new this place existed, as it’s
in somewhat of a residential area. It’s a huge bar
with food, off track betting, a large outdoor patio area, special rooms for football fans during
the season, and lots of parking. Great place for
an event and the folks there were happy to have
us.
The event started at 7pm and folks started arriving in their hippie best. Those that didn’t own
any tie-dye could buy some at the event. While
socializing with your brothers and sisters you
could munch on a buffet offered for $5 of pizza,
5 kinds of wings and veggies for dipping. Some
spent time with the two greyhounds that were on
site and found out more about the organization
‘Adopt a Greyhound’ which was this year’s recipient of the event’s proceeds. One greyhound
and her owner both showed up dressed pretty
groovy.
Throughout the night, raffle prizes were given away. When the contests began, they started
with the men’s hula-hoop competition. It was
pretty obvious right off the bat that none of these
45+ year old men really had the moves to get it
going but I never laughed so hard in my life!

and getting up and giving it a try. Finally ‘Patron’ got a
little bit of his groove on and managed to keep that thing
going for a couple minutes. Next were the ladies and they
all seemed to know just how it worked. It was definitely
some eye candy for all the guys watching. The paddleball
contest is another whole story, but to cut it short folks got
pretty imaginative with the use of the paddles. Two-inch
tall little loving cup trophies were awarded to the winners
of the games. Finally the best tie dye contest. There were
so many really good ones it was gonna be hard to pick the
winner…until the family tie dye came out. Molly and her
people showed up in their matching red white and blue
tie-dye and Molly stole the show in her little hoody. Now
who else could you pick to win at a benefit for dogs but
the little dog in tie-dye? If the greyhound had come in she
would have given Molly a run for her money… too fun.
This is my 3rd year attending this event and it’s always
fun. The run was originally started as a camaraderie event
to get to know your brothers and sisters a little better and
let us help our 4
legged friends
while we do
it. It’s something different
to do during
the hot summer
months and be
able to spend
the night in
cool air conditioning for just
$5 with your

are free.

US EPA Considers Lowering Motorcycle Sound Emissions Levels

size is troubling for a couple of reasons. First, it is not representative of
the much larger motorcycling community that will be affected by changing
the regulation, rendering the survey
results questionable at best. Second,
any time a federal agency wants to
spend taxpayer money to survey a
group of 10 or more individuals or organizations, they must obtain approval from the US Office of Management
and Budget (OMB). The approval
process isn’t easy and can often be
drawn out, giving American citizens
the right to weigh in on the agency’s
application for permission to survey.
However, when an agency only contacts nine organizations, they don’t
have to tell anyone or get permission
from the OMB to move forward on
the survey, making the process lack
transparency.
Why just motorcycles? It appears
that the EPA doesn’t want to curb all
noise, or even all vehicle noise, just
noise coming from two-wheeled vehicles. We at the MRF find that distinction discriminatory and simply
unacceptable, not to mention that it
suggests a more personal agenda and
not an agency-wide push. What sort
of impact will new decibel levels have
on retailers and ultimately motorcycle
owners? Alarmingly, this does not appear to have been addressed. After
reviewing the survey questions, it appears that the EPA is only concerned
with the impact on manufacturers.
While public correspondence has
not revealed the EPA’s true intention
to lower the allowable decibel limit,
the EPA indicated in a private phone
call with the MRF that it would certainly not be raising the standard or
keeping it the same. That leaves one
option, lowering the decibel standard
for motorcycles.
The MRF is working with Con-
gress to get the EPA to explain their
intentions and motivations. The MRF
is also working to meet directly with
the EPA to further determine exactly
is going on with this issue.
You can view the actual EPA

membership-based, national motorcyclists’
rights organization headquartered in Washington, DC. The first motorcyclists’ rights
organization to establish a full-time presence in Washington, DC, the Motorcycle
Riders Foundation is the only Washington
voice devoted exclusively to the street rider.
The MRF established MRFPAC in the early
1990s to advocate the election of candidates
who would champion the cause of rider safety and rider freedom.
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that the United States Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has begun collecting
data from the industry to consider
lowering the allowable decibel level
for motorcycles. Currently the allowable sound any vehicle can generate
is capped at 83db.
The EPA has sent letters to nine
companies that either import or build
aftermarket exhaust systems or complete motorcycles. This small sample
A nun walks into the liquor
store around the corner
from the church...
“I would like a bottle of cognac,”
she tells the store owner. “I can’t sell
you liquor, Sister. What would the
people think of me?” the man replied.
“It’s OK, it’s for medicinal purposes”, she assures him, “It’s for
Mother Superior’s constipation.” The
man thinks for a moment, and then
decides that a nun couldn’t possibly
be lying so he sells her the cognac.
Later, as he is going home for
the night, he goes around the corner
and sees the nun at the end of the alley, passed out and sitting against a
telephone pole. There are trash cans
knocked over all over the place and
her habit is pulled up over her head.
The man jumps out of his car, runs
over to the nun and wakens her. “Sister!” he shouts. “I can’t believe it,
you lied to me. You said that cognac
was for Mother Superior’s constipation!”
She looks up at him and slurs, “It
was. You think she ain’t gonna sh*t
when she sees me?”

AZ Rider
Rally in the Cool Pines
hosted by the
Mountain Motorcycle
Association
There are rallies and then there are rallies…
some are gigantic [which I avoid] as you can’t
seem to see the forest for the trees. Then there’s
our type of rally; smaller, more personal, less
commercial. “The Cabin” on Hwy 260 in Overgaard, AZ was again the ideal setting for the
Mountain Motorcycle Association of Arizona’s
3rd annual Rally in the Cool Pines. This organization has come a long way since our inception three years ago…now over 170 members
strong.
The rally, held on the weekend of June 2527, was fun…fun…fun… for one and all. Over
150 sign-ins, perfect weather, and a park-like
setting behind The Cabin each contributed to a
memorable gathering. Owners Steve and Raynita continue to improve the grounds, and the free
dry camping under the ponderosas is an added
plus.
Friday afternoon was time to network, renew friendships, and visit vendors. Among them
were the ever popular ‘Motatir’ Tom Rogers and
Mom Rita [the Stitchers, as I call them]. Also
present for the first time was “Jimbo” England
and his crew from Highlander Tattoos. They
were busy all day into late evening Friday as
were the Rogers… then all day Saturday into
late night. “Grumpy Jakes” bar-b-que was also
a popular stop. Friday the band “Thunderhorse”
played great music for both a crowded bar and
patio from 9pm till 1am.
On Saturday, rather than a poker run, attendees were entertained by a motorcycle rodeo
put on by “Twisted Whiskers”. This is an outfit
out of the Tucson area. Some of the games were
the standards … board run [40 feet] and turtle
race. Some were innovative … Imagine riding
by a plywood stagecoach facsimile as your rider shoots at it with bow and arrow … or going
around 4 plywood cattle as your rider attempts
to throw large hoops trying to hook horns or tail.
I think there were six or eight games in all. The
Twisted Whiskers slogan ‘Have Rodeo, Will
Travel’ is on the website twistedwhiskers.com.
Saturday night from 7pm till 10:30 made for
the end of a near perfect rally with the “White
Mountain Boogie Band” playing up a storm.
Once again the back patio was packed and dancers went wild. An added treat was during each
set a man named Randy got on stage with the
band with his harp [harmonica] and played for at
least ten minutes each time. I gotta tell ya… he’s
darn good… I learned he was born, raised, and
learned his style in New Orleans; which explains
his excellent technique.

Also Saturday night, a member who had
been fermenting a concoction for some time
which he calls “rocket fuel” made it available
to those interested. It must have been some kind
of drink as the imbibers looked and walked like
zombies Sunday morning. And sadly once again
some members were reminded of the old adage,
“He who hoots with the owls at night can’t soar
with the eagles in the morning.”
On Sunday morning following the flag raising services these zombies were rudely awakened when the American Legion honor guard
fired the 18 gun salute, honoring all the men and
women having served or currently serving in the
military. This was followed by a good sermon
and bike blessing by the Christian Motorcycle
Association.
The Mountain Motorcycle Association of
Arizona [MMAA] officers and volunteers did a
fine job putting together and managing one fine
rally. Hopefully we’ll have 200 sign-ins next
year.
Riding thru to beat the heat??? Look us up…
Mountain riders are a friendly lot and know
where to go for whatever.

The Poker Walk is held for fun and
encourages participants to come out and
take a peek at all the vendors’ wares. This
year there were oodles of vendors peddling a little bit of everything, such as
braided leather, jewelry, clothing, shoes,
military ribbons, patches, food, frozen
spark plugs, ummmm roasted corn and
more. This year the High hand winner
was June Schelinski and the Low hand
winner was Brandon Martin.
The People Games took place at the
Mormon Lake Camp Grounds Rodeo
Arena; complete with bleachers for adoring fans. Some runs tend to change their
games every couple of years. Not TB4S.
Players and spectators have made it clear
that they like the Tug O War, the Helmet
Toss, the Plank Walk, and the Pole in
Hole.
It’s Monsoon in AriZona. I think the
ever-looming threat of rain just heightened the excitement of the contestants
& fans. I found myself looking over my
shoulder up at the dark clouds and silently
hoping that Thor, the hammer-wielding
Norse god associated with thunder and
lightning storms, would be entertained by
the games and save the rain for later.
Since 1995, Clyde Brooks and Jean
Cooper from ABATE’s Phoenix/Shadow
Mountain Chapter, have been running the
TB4S People Games. Clyde’s helpers are
Lisa & Don Witney, and Sweet Pea. Lisa’s
job is to keep track of the people playing
and recorded their stats, Don serves as the
human target for the Helmet Toss and a
referee, Sweet Pea serves as an equipment
wrangler, unofficial beer taster, and resident cheer leader. Emcee for the games
was Paul, and he did an excellent job.
The first game was the Helmet Toss,
with a Ladies & a Men’s class. Whoever
successfully tosses the best of 5 helmets
into a large garbage can from a distance
of 22.5 feet for the women and 27.5 feet
for the men, is the winner.
Though contestants modeled every
kind of throwing style, the most successful style was to hold the helmet like you
would a horseshoe and toss it underhand.
Out of 16 Ladies who entered the Helmet Toss in Round 1 – only Linda, Lori,
Patty, Susan and Tammy scored 1 successful basket. In Round 2, Tammy Pancoast
scored 2 baskets to become the winner
for the Ladies’ Helmet Toss. Tammy’s a
South paw and a non-bowler.
22 Gents signed up for a chance to win
the Men’s Helmet Toss trophy. Round 1
weeded out the potential champions: Bill,
James, Kyle, Taz, Salty was worth his salt,
and Sean each scored 1 basket. Round 2

even more. In this round, each of Kyle’s
first 4 tosses was a tad short, a tad long, a
tad to the right or a tad to the left, but his
5th toss hit home. Salty sunk another basket. Sean handed his beer to Sweet Pea to
hold while he took his shots, but Sweet
Pea was thirsty. Sean scored a shot to stay
in the game but returned to an empty beer.
At the end of Round 2, only Kyle, Salty
and Sean remained.
Round 3: Kyle started off strong, sinking the first toss effortlessly, but the rest
of his tosses bounced off the rim of the
can. Salty stepped up to the line, missed
2 but rebounded by sinking the third
toss, but then he missed the last 2. Sean
returned with a new beer just in time to
take his turn. Sweet Pea met Sean at the
starting line – smiling ever so sweetly as
she reached out her hand to hold his beer
again. Sean smiled broadly and handed
her the unopened beer. Sweet Pea looked
a bit forlorn – standing there with the unopened beer. Sean reorganized the helmets – lining them up just perfect. Then
he picked up the 1st helmet and smiled at
Sweet Pea. With precision Sean accurately
tossed the helmet into the can. He picked
up the next helmet and with a quick flick
of his wrist - it sailed effortlessly into the
can. While Don the referee stepped forward and emptied the garbage can, Sean
walked over and opened the beer Sweet
Pea was holding. Sweet Pea smiled with
delight. Sean took a good swig and handed it back to Sweet Pea. Sweet Pea toastcontinues on page 18

ed Sean and the crowd and took a gulp. It
looked like Sean had lost his edge during
the small break in the action – because
he missed the next 2 tosses. However, the
next helmet he tossed was a dead ringer.
So it was Sean Auten in round 3, who
made 3 baskets for the win. Sweet Pea
finished off Sean’s beer in celebration!
The 2nd game was the Tug O War.
A long heavy rope is stretched out and a
bandanna is tied to it in the middle. A line
in the dirt is drawn perpendicular to the
rope. The First team to pull an opponent
across that line wins. To keep the teams
straight in my notes, I asked each team to
for a name. Some names were quite descriptive. The following teams competed
in Round 1:
Borderline Red Necks vs Big Dick Mother Phucking Porno Stars;
The Unknowns vs Jager Bombers;
Team Hot Stuff vs Iron Men of Post 36;
Pine Top Punishers vs. Sons of Hell MC;
Team High Country vs, Pine Top Punishers:

The Winners were Sons of Hell MC

(Steve, Cliff, Zeke, Mark, & Dennis)
The next game was the Plank Race.
This is played with 2 teams of 4 people.
Each team is given 2 wooden 2” x 4”
planks; about 8 feet long and outfitted
with 4 sets of ropes & handles. Each team
member stands with one foot on each
board and holds onto the rope handles.
This game is very misleading, because it
looks really easy. However just the opposite is true, because it actually requires
good listening skills & team work. United
we Win or divided we fail.
At the end of Round 1 these 4 teams
remained: Team Kick-ass; Team Rascals;
Team Jager Bombers; and Team Brown
Trout. In the end, Team Kick-ass kicked
ass (Karen Pacleb, Kyle Garrett, Lori, and
Pammy); taking home this year’s trophy.
The last game was Pole in the Hole, a
crowd pleaser. This game is played with
teams of 2 people, traditionally a man and
a woman, but alternative groupings make
the game more challenging and double the
fun. At starting points about 25 feet apart,
person (A) holds a toilet plunger between
their legs and person (B) holds a roll of
toilet paper between their legs. At the go
signal, using no hands, player (A) must
quickly waddle over to player (B) and put
the Pole in da Hole and then player (A)
must successfully waddle another 25 feet
to cross the finish line, all while still holding the skewered

roll of toilet paper with only their knees
or thighs. The team with the fastest time
wins!
Most of the mixed sex teams tend to
play their traditional roles, but every once
in a while the skewer and the skewee
switched places. The Same-sex teams
make the crowd go crazy. It’s a very funny
game to watch. The sexual innuendo and
bawdy banter between team members and
between the crowd & the team members,
just ramps up the over-all excitement.
The game started with 16 teams, including Jim Silk & his lady Linette Reid,
the reigning champions. Three sets of
their friends were out to take their trophy.
At the end of Round 1, only Kirsten &
Joe, Jim & Linette, Mark & Jewels, and
Ron & Sherry remained. In Round 2, Jim
& Linette beat out Kirsten & Joe. Ron &
Sherry got the better of Mark & Jewels. In
Round 3, it was Jim & Linette Vs. Sherry
& Ron. To the crowds’ delight, Linette
switched places with Jim. And with ease
and precision, Linette shoved that plunger
home and then crossed the finish line for
the Win. The crowd cheered wildly.
That wrapped up the games for the day.

TBFS ✦ Bike Games
Bike Games were held on Saturday.

hand won him $150. Judy Kay Caldwell
held the High hand with a Full House of
Kings & Queens. She collected $250.

The BIKE Games were scheduled from
4-6pm but actually ended at 7, because
everyone wanted to play and we was
havin’ too much fun! This year’s games
were the Slow Race, Road Kill, and the
ever popular Weenie Bite.
The same team ran the Bike Games
as the People Games: Clyde, Jean, Lisa,
Don, Sweet Pea, and Paul as emcee.
Along with her duties as referee, Sweet
Pea entertained the crowd with her playful sense of humor.
Slow Race: To win the Slow Race, the
rider/pilot must traverse 60 feet down a
lane at the slowest pace without stopping
or putting a foot down. 35 Riders lined
up. Round 1: the riders were divided into
7 heats, the winner of each heat advanced
to Round 2. In Round 2: the 7 winners
were divided into a group of 3 and 4. Out
of 7 contenders, only SparkPlug and Darin Yates (of Thunder Roads magazine)
advanced to Round 3.
It was simply marvelous watching
those men show off their skill and mastery as they drove ever so slowly down
their lanes. It was Darin – astride a sweet
1978 Shovel FLH who won, but SparkPlug certainly gave Darin a tough run.

The next game
was Road Kill.
This was a new
game for me. It
is played with a
pilot & passenger. Each team needs 2 lanes, 1 fishing
net (the kind attached to a pole) and 6
small stuffed animals (to be sacrificed).
The stuffed animals are spread out, 1 every 6 feet or so, down 1 lane. As the pilot
drives down the lane – the passenger uses
the net to scoop as many animals as they
can into their net. The team with the most
“Road Kill” wins.
27 different teams entered this game.
The field of contenders was divided into
7 heats. There was some confusion between the referees as to how they were
going to select a winner. One of the referees thought they were going to reduce the
contenders in stages (testing all the teams
who scooped up 2+, then 3+, etc.) while
a different referee said, “No! – whoever
scores the most, WINS. We’ll go another
round only if there’s a tie.”
By the 3rd heat, 3 pieces of Road Kill
was the number to beat. In heat 5, Dennis
Bell & Ms. Julie Bennett scooped up 4
pieces of gourmet Road Kill, to take the
lead and ultimately the Win.
The last game was the ever popular
crowd pleasing favorite – the Weenie
Bite. This game is played with a pilot and
a talented passenger. The guest of honor
- the “weenie” is dipped in mustard (for
visibility) and hung on a string that’s
been strung on a pole overhead (visualize
a hangman’s noose).
While the pilot drives slowly under
the weenie, the passenger must bite off a
chunk of that weenie. The pilot can’t stop
or put his feet down. The passenger can’t
use their hands, no sucking, no swallowing, and they must bite a chunk off. The
biggest chunk Wins!
Bruce, my editor, and I were taking
pictures. We both got some good shots,
but Bruce got some pictures from just
the right angle to capture the grace and

style of some of the best Weenie Biters. You can laugh, but it takes real
skill and talent to bite that weenie
without using your hands and while
your body’s moving. I think the Game
hosts should offer 2 trophies: Biggest
Bite and Best Style.
Don & Clyde strung up the weenie
and dipped it in yellow mustard. They’d
redo that process every time a weenie got
bitten or became road kill. It was Sweet
Pea’s job to gauge the height of the passenger and then hoist the weenie up or
down to the proper height for biting.
By the time the Weenie Bite game got
underway, the party was in full swing.
Saturday was a bit hotter than Friday and
so people were sharing liberal libations.
Initially, about 35 teams lined up.
However it is believed that that number
grew to about 50 teams, as the game progressed. Lisa and I realized several ladies had switched pilots – to get another
chance to show off their talents and/or
the pilot had secured a new passenger.
By about the 20th team, Sweet Pea
was showing off her puppeteer skills via
the bobbing weenie. Between the banter
of the crowd and Sweet Pea’s dancing
weenie – my sides hurt from laughing so
much.
About 6 or 7 teams had sizable chunks.
There was everything from an inch to
about 4 inches secured in paper towels,
just waiting to be measured. Sadly, one
crowd favorite, Linette bit off a sizable
chunk just as her pilot Jim Silk put his
feet down. Boogie Man and Tequila Rose
scored the prize chunk to win the game.
They also won the 2008 Weenie Bite.
I had a great time this year at TB4S.
I stayed warm and dry in a cabin with
Margie. My best friends, Bruce & Betsy
were there. I got to write up the games.
I visited with old friends and made new
friends. Life doesn’t get much better than
this.
Let’s all do it again - next year. Be
there or be square.
Enjoy life... I am. L80JWLS
