The most action was in the area of membership: Henry Danielson is eligible for Life Membership. Congratulations, you will soon get the official gold card. Rich Cieslewicz is now a Senior Member. Congratulations to you. A letter of resignation has been received from Jim Frazon. He has relocated to Arizona. Applications for membership have been received from Laurie Sam, sp. by Moch and Kuwik; Mike Dinoto, Sp. by Moch and Kuwik; Pete Fote, Sp. by Moch and Tinstman; Robin Chant Sp. by Moch and Smith; Eric Carpenter, Sp. by Waclawski and Reid and Jay Stoltenberg Sp. by Heckman and Rizzo. All were approved and will be added to the waiting list. The official Club closing will be October 14, but the Club will be open until Nov. 1. The work party starts at 8:00 AM sharp!! A CPR Class has been changed from the end of the season until next June. Can you believe 14 members still have no hours recorded. You know who you are……You want a job? Contact Beardsley. Do not wait until the Club closing to get those needed hours, there is not that much to do. The wireless is up and working well. The Shark Regatta was very successful and the Canadians have inquired about next years’ already. They also suggested that DYC apply for the World’s Shark Regatta; a week long event. That is surely a feather in DYC’s Cap. A copy of the picture and a thank you letter will be sent to all of the Regatta sponsors. Great idea. Next DYC Board Meeting Tues. Oct. 14, 7 PM Final meeting at the Clubhouse Mark your calendar right now for the Annual Meeting Nov. 8 1PM Knights of Columbus Clubroom To all Life and Senior members in good standing of the Dunkirk Yacht Club as per Article VI, Section 1 of the Dunkirk Yacht Club By-Laws…The 2008 Nominating Committee is presenting the following names for election to the Dunkirk Yacht Club Board of Directors. The show was great, the trip fantastic and the cost of gas astronomical. On Aug. 16 Ellie Smith and Katie Troidle swam over a mile in Lake Erie as a benefit for cancer. New this year was an Official Game Day. Boats took passengers and it was a ‘wild and crazy time’ with water balloons, picking up balloons with boat hooks and hoping that they contained a big prize. Whiskey Tango had about 15 aboard catching and fielding balloons. The revelers continued most of the afternoon. Libby Wright said this was the most fun ever!! Thanks goes to Jim Christy and his committee. Great job. I mentioned that Doug Mahany blew all away singing at the Fall Banquet. It must have given him the confidence to now sing on the local radio station in an ad for what else but…the Putnam agency. A newly discovered DYC singer is Rachel Schmidt. She belted out tunes for the Friday Night Shark Welcoming Party. The Shark Regatta weekend was well attended and many members got hours by doing various duties to carry off a feat such as this from Committee Boats, Mark Boats, Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinner, Entertainment etc. It is a great time to work together. (See separate sheet on this) Another great party was the Hawaiian Luau themed Labor Day Party. Members were treated to see the pig and turkeys roasting on the giant cooker outside the gate. The meal was outstanding, prizes great and again it was great to see so many future DYCers’ attending and participating. Kathy Peters, Bob and Judy Fuerst and Brett and Jenn Christy did a wonderful job. Kathy said there many others too. Quite by accident I discovered a nature BLOG on The Weather Underground Website (wunderground.com/dunkirkny) There you will see great nature photos by Gale VerHague. Her handle is novembergale’s wunder blog. Check for previous months to see her photos. Lately there have been her favorites submitted by other enthusiasts and some comments; all great and unbelievable shots. We hear that Chet and Sue Bates enjoyed Alaska so much previously, they returned for a visit recently. In previous issues of the Nautical News I have mentioned the Lightning Racing Fleet, the Kids’ Sailing Programs and included pictures. One of the key people in those activities was Meg Foster. We were saddened to see that she recently passed away. Mike and Pam McKinnon spent a week hiking, canoeing and tenting in the Adirondacks. Baileys, Deerings and Wills recently vacationed at Boothbay Harbor, ME. There they visited with Jim and Val Betts, now residents of Boothbay and former DYC members. They say hello to all. In The News -Jennifer C. Berner, DDS has joined the North Chautauqua Dental Group. Yes, she is the daughter of John and Cathy and has joined in her Dad’s Dental Group. It must be the name Jennifer because, Jennifer Foley Ellman, DDS, daughter of Jim and Judy recently joined in her Dad’s practice. -Kathy Wojcinski accepting the book “Dunkirk” from the author as a donation to the Dunkirk Free Library -Donna Huse working at the Red Cross building as a United Way Community Caring Week Volunteer -Carol Kowalewski and Linda Hodorowicz as winners in the Girls4Golf Tuesday Night Ladies League at Sugar Hill Golf Course. ‘It’s never to late’… the last week of August saw Loon A Sea, after 12 years, a zillion hours of work and bucko bucks, launched into its slip at DYC. Truly a labor of love, Captain Dave and First-mate Mary Stock, had a trial voyage to Barcelona and then to Erie for the Labor Day weekend. The 34’ Marine Trader is a work of art. Congratulations!! Launching even later, Aug. 30, Joe Troidle brought Yellow Boat into his slip. It’s about time!! Ronnie Lafferty is having her own Art Show at the Intermezzo Coffee Shop in Fredonia Sept. 21 through Nov. 14. This is her first exhibit. An Artists’ Reception will be held Sunday, September 21 from Noon to 2 PM. Ronnie invites all to stop in. What a perfect day….attend the International Brunch at 11 AM and then go to the “Intermezzo” to see Ronnie’s beautiful watercolors. New, August 28 was Vol.1, No.1 of the Chautauqua Star & Bulletin Board, a publication from The Maytum Company. Members Bob and Mark are pictured and quoted in this new venture for the Maytum Family. It is full of tips, news and ads of all types. Check it out. This is a perfect segue to again thank the Maytums for the publication of the Nautical News. We fully appreciate the timely printing, stapling and folding of the monthly newsletter to be sent to all. Thanks so much and to the staff for doing this monthly task, especially Wendy . Congratulations to Tom Webb….he was the winner of the 54th H.K.Williams Commemorative Golf Tournament held over the Labor Day Weekend at Shorewood Country Club. John Berner and fellow members won the Jim Furyk Flight.
