BELMONT PARK FRACTIONAL TIME COMPARISONS
Shown below is the order of finish that would be likely if each horse repeated a representative race. There are many reasons why this may not happen. Foremost
of these is that, like humans, horses have good and bad days. Also, today's race may differ from the representative race due to changes in the post position,
weight carried, class, track, surface, pace characteristics etc. Nevertheless, plotting and studying times from previous performances is a basic part of
handicapping. If the representative race was not on a normal track, the times shown have been adjusted by the track variant applicable. The underlined fractions
indicate the leader(s) at that particular point in the race. Except for the LF = Last Fraction, which indicates the fastest closer(s). X = No recent or available time at
or about the distance. The date of the selected, representative race is shown followed by a number indicating how many races back it was.

RACE APPRAISAL
ANALYSIS: Famous Rose has finished far up the track in her last two
starts with much tougher. She has a lot to prove, but Rudy Rodriguez will
try adding blinkers and he can be dangerous with class-droppers. Let's
make 'Rose the HF 15a to bounce back, although we'd certainly look
elsewhere if she gets overbet off her connections. Indian Lilly beat
$35,000 Maiden-Claimers Feb 16 and repeated with $25,000 claimers
March 10. She saw her number dip when 3rd with $25,000 claimers April
3 and now gets a slight drop in class off the claim by Jacobson {from
Baker). She seems an obvious threat on paper, bu( might be worth trying
to beat. MyJJonna Jean beat $50,000 Maiden-Claimers Feb 20 and then
was 3rd with $35,000 claimers April 9. She's lightly raced and should fit
well with these. Blondecat beat $15,000 claimers April 7 and rates
respect right back, while Buttonfront co-tops the charting off her big win
over NY-bred $16,000 Maiden-Claimers March 30. She's certainly facing
tougher, but the numbers suggest she might be able to compete.

KENTUCKY DERBY IN CHURCHILL DOWNS ISSUE ONLY
Today's Racing Digest will once again be covering the KENTUCKY DERBY, and this year we will have a complete Digest
for the entire Churchill Downs card, including the Derby, Saturday, May 7. Please note: the Kentucky Derby will not be
a part of the hard-copy California Digest or appear in the on-line So Cal or No Cal Digests. We will print a separate
hard-copy issue of the Churchill Digest for Saturday, and it should be available on newsstands on Friday where the Digest
is usually distributed. The on-line Churchill Downs Digest for Saturday should be available by Thursday afternoon. For
those who enjoy betting Kentucky racing, we produce an on-line Digest for every racing day at Churchill Downs.

HOW TO READ TRACK BIAS
The main track can be biased toward front-runners or late-runners and/or horses racing on the inside or outside part of the track. To define
how the track was playing we've added a track bias column in the data lines. The following symbols will be used in that column:
An
An
An
An
F
L
I
O
=
=
=
=
A Front-runner's or speed bias
A Late-runner's or closer's bias
An Inside bias
An Outside bias
Each will carry a modifier of 1 (moderate), 2 (strong) or 3 (dominant).
Turf races may have a frontrunners or late-runner's bias as well as an indication whether the auxiliary rails were up (up) or down (dn)
Examples:
F1/03
L2/DN
Moderate Frontrunner and dominant outside biases.
Late-runners_and the rails were down on the turf.

RACE APPRAISAL
ANALYSIS: Kissa Melissa beat this kind April 20, her second straight
win. She's been no worse than 2nd in four straight and is an obvious
contender. The move from Aqueduct to Belmont could change things, but
she owns a win here and has finished in the money in five of six sprints on
the course- Stormandaprayer lost by a head to 'Melissa when 3rd with
this kind Feb 17. She came back to run 2nd at the level March 25 and
could turn the tables if speed is holding. It's also interesting that It Does It
Every Time finished a couple of lengths behind Stormandaprayer in that
March 25 heat and then crushed $25,000 claimers by eight lengths April
22. That flatters Stormandaprayer and we'll make the latter the HF 15a
and see if she can turn the tables on 'Melissa with the switch to Belmont.
Does It Every Time was claimed by Jacobson off her big win April 22 and
we'll see if she can duplicate it with the return to this level. Erin Rose beat
bottom-level Allowance foes March 19. She's making her second start off
the layoff and has a right to improve. Count her a contender. Analysis by

METHOD HORSE II
An approach to isolate the contender in each race.
1. Draw a line through all scratched horses in the top section of [he Digest face page.
2. Award 10 points to all horses with a COLUMN 4 score that is 10 points higher than the Race level shown in the heading for each race.
3. Note trie lop 3 high scores in COLUMN 6. Award 8 points for 1 st (and lies). 5 points for 2nd (and ties): and 3 poinls for 3rd (and ties). Be sure lo eliminate the scratc
4. If there is only one "F" ("Lone F") in PER COLUMN 7, award 5 points.
5. The following Handicapping Factors in COLUMN 8 receive pointsHP 2 - 15 pts.
HF 15 = 8 pts,
HF 15a = 4 pis.
HF 20 = 4 pts.
HF 21'= 2 pts.
* - Assign no points for HF 21c. 21d or 21r.
6. Fractional Chart Order of Finish: (First line under each race table).
1st (and ties) = 10 pts.
2nd (and ties) = 6 pts.
3rd (and ties) = 3 pts.
"Too many unshowns" award no points.
If necessary, refer to the Fractional Time Comparisons page in the front of the Digest for the complete fractional chart order of finish to determine complete point totals.
7. in case of ties, split contenders in this method:
A. Prefer the horse with the highest ratings in Col. 6.
B. If still tied, prefer the high score in Col. 5.
C. If still tied, prefer the contender with the highest number in CoJ 15.
After tie breakers, the top two horses should be considered solid contenders with the first choice, of course deserving the strongest support. The final betting selection re
the individual but it is suggested that the novice player stick to the top selection. Although this method will produce a play in every race, advanced handicappers may wis
improvise with additional rules (recency, jockey/trainer, price or weight restrictions, for example). Considerations of this sort will iimit action somewhat but should also inc
long-term profits.

RACE APPRAISAL
ANALYSIS: We're willing to give Hungry Island another chance as she
finished 2nd off the bench in a like event April 2. She finished 2nd over
this course last year and Solis got to know her last time out. 'Island is the
HF 15a. Wet One has had troubled trips in her two starts vs. straight
Maidens in this country. She receives a rider upgrade and she could be
one to fear late with clear sailing. Fashion Forward may be the most
dangerous of the rookies as she is by a turf winner and out of a turf
winner. The trainer and sire stats are easy to like and she seems to merit
tote and paddock checks. Far Isle has a look in the exotics, but with three
runner-ups in her last four starts we'll leave her off our win tickets.
First-timer report: L'Etoile Bleue is the first foal out of her non-winning
dam with 10 works since Feb 17. Arch Royal ($260,000 ylg.) is the eighth
foal of her dam, all seven siblings are winners of which four won on turf
and she shows seven drills since March 5. Fashion Forward ($130,000
ylg.) is the second foal out of her turf-winning dam, the other is a five time
dirt winner and she has 12 works since Feb 12. An Absolute Ten
($140,000 ylg.) is the third foal out of her turf-winning dam, the other two
are mud winners and she shows seven drills since March 14. Lemme is
the second foal of her dam, the other is a five time dirt winner and she has
six works since March 26. Analysis by Jon Shonk

ANALYSIS: Morebills has run 2nd in three of five starts with all three
use in the Exacta. Grangerardo and Wharton.W zard are a couple of big^\ '
runner-up finishes coming at this level and that can be considered both
class-droppers that could perk up at this low levetxGrangerardo actually

position atop the charting suggests he may have found a field he can beat,

closing in on a level he can win at and he owns better Pace Ratings than
Morebitls. We'll make Johnnypump the HF 15a with Morebills a must

ACFor fans of the Pick Six Scramble, simply employ the following strategy with the horses listed on the Quick Pick Page. The
,'
requirements are two 'singles' somewhere in the Pick Six. Place your 'singles' in their proper spot and then select three horses in each
of the other four races. Label the first three horses 'A,B,C,', the second set as 'D,E,F' the third set as 'G,H,I' and the fourth as 'J.K.L'.
Use the following patterns to build your nine $2 tickets. In this example our 'singles' are in legs 2 (s1 ) and 4 (s2) of the Pick Six.

RACE APPRAISAL
i~i~r\"i^"^
ANALYSIS: All eight horses entered are running for the $35,000 Optional
Claiming tag. Saint Daimon pressed the pace and gamely nipped the
pacesetting Hewitts under these conditions April 8 with Who's the
Cowboy lapped on them both in 3rd. Joining the fray today are
comebacker Starforaday, a multiple winner over the oval who was last
spotted running 2nd with better Nov 25; Ricoriatoa, who is out of claiming
jail for this and has finished in-the-money in four of his last five starts; and,
Hillswick. who has gone 1-for-4 since being claimed for $25,000 by
Rodriguez Nov 19, but is a solid fit off his Feb 11 score. That one gets a
rider change after Velasquez fajled to use his speed effectively March 31.
Today's pace should be quicker and more to his liking, as Ricoriatoa,
Hewitts, Jack On the Rocks and Saint Daimon all want to run early.
Hillswick may tuck in perfectly and get first run. He's the HF 15a, while
Who's the Cowboy and returnee Starforaday are the late threats.
Bottom line, though, is that this could be 'spread' race in the Pick 4 as
there is very little separating (he top half-dozen runners. Analysis by
Rick Lochner
CLOSERS: Fastest in the stretch in recent races at or near this distance
have been: Starforaday :23.6 - Jack On the Rocks :23.7 - Who's the

RACE APPRAISAL
ANALYSIS: This is basically a NW3L event as there are no 3-year-olds in
the field. Nurse Dolce is off a narrow win vs. NW2L $20,000 turf routers
April 15. She plots on top off her previous start when 2nd Feb 19 and she
makes her third start off the layoff which is a winning move by her barn.
We'll take 'Dolce right back as the HF I5a. Chick In Slacks owns both of
her wins over this course and did finish 2nd off a layoff last year. Her barn
owns a poor record with comebackers, but she has proven she can run
well fresh and Solis won with her Oct 20. Watch the betting. To The
Point has won two of her last five starts and was 2nd in her last start April
8. However, she is O-for-7 on this course and she might be best used in
the exotics only. Kaleigh Rose loves to finish 2nd as she has done just
that in nine of 25 starts. Cohen tries his hand and she has exotics
potential, but we'll leave her off our win tickets. Analysis by Jon Shonk

RATING PERFORMANCE
A horse's performance can be rated in any number of methods, from final time to pace. The Digest offers four performance ratings:
The FIRE number, our newest rating, the Pace and Final Time Ratings, found in each horse's Data Lines; and the CPR, our
original performance figure. For all of these ratings, the higher the rating, the faster the horse is. Here's a quick rundown on what
each rating figure means:
FIRE: The FIRE number is a figure based on a horse's speed through the whole race. This number is based on a 100 par, where
our other figures are based off a 150 par.
CPR: The CPR is based on a horse's final time rating, as well as his relative early position in the race. The CPR, with its pace
Component built in, tends to favor horses with a good mix of speed and stamina. If, a frontrunner and pace-presser were to
deadheat for the win, the pace-presser would likely earn the better figure. And, since pace-pressers tend to win more than their fair
share locally, this bias works well in California.
PACE RATING: The pace rating measures early speed by comparing each horse's early fractions against our track pars. This is
a good separator when judging the likely pace of a race.
FINAL TIME RATING: This measures a horse's final time against our track pars, with the daily track variant factored in. A horse
equaling the track par for the distance would earn a 150 Final Time Rating. Three points are deduced for each length slower than
KENTUCKY DERBY IN CHURCHILL DOWNS ISSUE ONLY
Today's Racing Digest will once again be covering the KENTUCKY DERBY, and this year we will have a complete Digest
for the entire Churchill Downs card, including the Derby, Saturday, May 7.
