A Message from Our
Chairman and President
S
ince first opening our doors in November 1984, Opportunity
House has always stood at the forefront of responding to
critical community needs. From our humble beginnings as a winter
time shelter for homeless men up through our current efforts to
create permanent full time jobs for shelter and city residents, our
vision has remained the same. For those who are unable to help
themselves and have fallen through the cracks of society, we are
there to catch them and provide safety and support. For others
who are struggling to make changes in their lives to become more
responsible and independent, we offer an array of programs and
services that guide them down the path to independence and
self sufficiency. And lastly, for the children who are the future of our
community, we provide an environment that nurtures their growth
and development, and helps to pave their way for future success.
To remain a viable organization for thirty years requires commitment
and a willingness to adapt to changing times. This would not be
possible without a dedicated staff and a Board of Director’s with
both vision and compassion. When combined with a multitude
of volunteers and donors committed to helping fulfill our mission,
Opportunity House has become the beacon of light for those less
fortunate in our community.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported our efforts
over the past thirty years. You have enabled us to touch the lives
of tens of thousands of people, and helped them chart a course
that turned failure into success and despair into hope. Thank you
again for helping us make a difference in Berks County.
Sincerely,
Ginny Hand, Chair

HUMAN
RESOURCES
Over the last year numbers show that we have not quite maintained
the retention rate for employees with greater than one year of service,
however, we have been able to retain our long term employees.
The growth of enrollment in the Learning Center and the onset of
new programs have increased our total employees to 76 within the
organization. Our employees number 15 with five or more years of
employment, 11 with ten or more years of service and 5 with 15 or
more years of service. Our current retention rate of employees with
more than one year of service is 75%.
Our Human Resource staff continues to strive to maintain health care
coverage at no cost to our employees. With the ever rising costs of
health insurance this has certainly become a yearly struggle and has
necessitated some very creative planning with the assistance of our
insurance brokers. Employees have the option to add family members
to their coverage and to enroll in dental care however this is at the
employee’s expense. We are able to assist them in offsetting these
costs with our Section 125 Plan which provides a tax free deduction
for their premiums.
Opportunity House continues to provide employer paid Disability/
Life Insurance, an employee/employer Retirement Savings Plan and an
Employee Assistance Program. It is most exciting that we are able to
offer our employees a Retirement Savings Plan in which the company
contributes a percentage of their gross wages, whether or not the
employee is able to contribute to their plan. And it is even more exciting
that the majority of our employees do contribute to the plan. Human
Resources meets with our employees each year to stress the importance
of participation in the Retirement Savings Plan.
Once again employees have provided a year of outstanding hard work
and dedication to Opportunity House. Our employees strive to provide a
high level of service to all of our clients, parents and children. And thanks
to the support of the community, businesses and grants received we are
able to continue our work at Opportunity House and in the community.

ACT The lessons learned in The ACT (Accountability + Communication + Trust = Success) Formula training that
was conducted in FY2013 were carried forward in FY2014 with the establishment of the ACT Committee and the
implementation of a leadership development program. The ACT Committee was an assembly of employees selected
from throughout the agency that met on a monthly basis. The primary charge of the committee was to keep the
agency engaged in The ACT Formula principles and process to ensure the best outcome of the training program.
Steps taken to reinforce the ACT training included 1) placement of posters and banners with related slogans
throughout the agency, 2) placement of ACT related articles in the inter- agency newsletter, and 3) implementation
of the ACT hot-line to allow employees to make anonymous recommendations and comments relative to the program.
The Leadership Development Training was implemented to provide all management and supervisory staff with the
skills and tools to be effective leaders within The ACT Formula program. A series of 12 one-hour leadership training
sessions were facilitated by Bonnie Sussman-Versace and addressed topics such as Leadership versus Management,
Ethics in Leadership, Fair Process, Personality Styles, Accountability, Setting and Reinforcing Expectations,
Managing Relationships, Effective Communications, and Leading Change.

Shelter Services
In April of 2013 Opportunity House received two
grants to provide our clients who are seeking General
Equivalency Diplomas (GED) with the financial
assistance they need. The grant pays for the GED
study guides in English or Spanish, the test itself in
English or Spanish, and transportation if needed.
During this past fiscal year three women successfully
secured their GED. Presently there are 14 women and
one man enrolled in the GED program.
In FY2014 the Emergency Shelter provided 24,924
nights of shelter to 487 unduplicated children, men,
and women and served 116,452 meals.
Opportunity House continues to offer drug and
alcohol treatment, mental health counseling,
medication monitoring, transportation, budgeting
counseling, advocacy for appointments at The
Department of Public Welfare and Social Security
Office and interagency communication. The Second
Street Learning Center and The Reading Health
Systems Dispensary at 2nd Street are also available
to the shelter population. Services at the dispensary
can be free and the Learning Center offers reduced
fees if needed. Our
goal is to provide the
services that people
need to support them
into returning to the
community.
The collaboration with
the U.S. Department
of Veterans Affairs
to provide shelter to
homeless veterans has
been very successful.
Since the beginning of
the year 75 veterans
have received services
at Opportunity
House. Many of the
vets are housed at
Opportunity House until
they are eligible for
permanent placement.
Some receive HUD/
VASH certificates or
placement in other VA
housing programs. While
here at Opportunity
House they engage in
all the services we offer.
At the April 2014
Annual Berks Community
Breakfast hosted by the
Berks Coalition to End
Homelessness and State
Senator Judy Schwank,
our own Delia McLendon,
Vice President Shelter and
Housing Services, was
awarded the “Friend of the
Delia’s Award
Homeless Award”. Delia
was given the award for her work above and beyond
the call to help the homeless. We are so proud of her.
Children’s Alliance Center
During FY2014, the Children’s Alliance Center (CAC)
of Berks County conducted 474 forensic interviews.
We continue to work closely with our partners at
Berks County Children & Youth Services, local law
enforcement, Berks County District Attorney’s Office,
mental health and medical providers, and school
districts to provide the most coordinated, least intrusive
services to sexually abused children and their families.
Melissa Haydt, the vice president, continues in the
2 year leadership program through the National
Children’s Alliance, to improve her leadership skills, and
will actually be mentoring a new CAC director from
somewhere in the USA in the next fiscal year. Melissa
continues to serve on various community committees
and task forces. She also has spoken at several local

Programs
As part of National Child Abuse Prevention month in
April, the CAC participated in a Greater Reading
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chamber mixer
event. At that time, the CAC was highlighted for the
past ten years of work in Berks County and the services
designed to help guide and support children who
have been victims of sexual abuse.
The CAC and Opportunity House are working on plans
to relocate the CAC in FY2015 due to the current
lease expiring. At the new location we expect to
expand services to include medical exams and mental
health services, in addition to the forensic interviews.
schools and churches about the work of the CAC.
Because of the increasing demands of the expanding
CAC, Opportunity House has discontinued. the County
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program
under its umbrella. The Berks County CASA program will
be transferred to another agency.
Therapy dogs and their handlers continued their
involvement with the CAC to alleviate the anxiety
of the children and families waiting for the forensic
interviews. Interns from local universities, Penn State
Berks, Alvernia, and Albright, continue to be involved
as part of their education to learn about our work
here. Physician residents from the Reading Health
System visit our site as part of their education to learn
about our process.
In terms of training and education, Kelsey, the forensic
interviewer, and Melissa, attended a second nationally
approved protocol of forensic interviewing provided
by the National Children’s Advocacy Center. Kelsey
also attended advanced forensic interview training
provided by National Children’s Advocacy Center.
Janice, the victim advocate, and Melissa, attended a
three day foundational academy training through the
Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, as
a requirement to receive Victims of Crime Act (VOCA)
funding. The Northeast Regional CAC staff provided
team building training for our multi disciplinary
investigative team. Our entire staff, including two
interns, attended a one day child abuse conference
sponsored by Berks County Children & Youth Services.
Recognizing 10 years of
providing services at the Children’s
Alliance Center
The CAC installed a new digital recording system to
replace the antiquated one. The new equipment
records all forensic interviews and provides a copy to
children and youth and law enforcement as evidence
in their sexual abuse investigations. This state of the
art equipment was purchased and installed through
money raised by the Berks Youth in Action and the
Blue Knight organizations.
In conjunction with our 30th anniversary celebration
the business community was invited to attend a

Reading Fire Department
Commerce and Industry Open House on Tuesday,
April 8, 2014 in the Carole & Ray Neag Gymnasium
at Opportunity House. At that time, we highlighted
the Children’s Alliance Center of Berks County for the
past ten years of work in Berks County and the services
designed to help guide and support children who
have been victims of sexual abuse. In addition, the
Open House program recognized the month of April as
National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The theme of
the evening was A Candy Land.
As part of Fire Safety Week the Reading Fire
Department visited the Learning Center and talked to
the children about fire safety. The child were shown
the equipment and trucks used by the firemen.
Summer Camp
Children from the Learning Center attended day
camp at Camp Adahi, which is run by the Camp Fire
USA Adahi Council. Their summer fun included arts
and crafts, boating, hiking, swimming, and outdoor
adventure. The children also spent the summer at
French Creek State Park where they swam in the pool,
took nature hikes and fished in the lake.
The technology center was transformed into a larger
than life Candy Land board with life-size decorations
of lollipops, gumdrops, candy canes and more! The
classrooms in the Center represented the various
villages from the game. Sweets, snacks and beverages
to please the palate represented the theme. Over 110
guests explored the jumbo game board and toured
through the building to learn more about the services
provided to the school age children from Reading.
Reading Public Library
Every Wednesday throughout the year students took
part in a theme based program at Reading Public
Library. Each week a new theme was introduced that
led into a story book reading and an activity that
represented the weekly theme.
This event was made possible by a generous gift from
Tompkins-VIST Bank. Other contributors included Van
Scoy Jewelers, Kay Jewelers, Csencsits International,
Stoudt Brewing Company, C&S Supply Company, Inc.,
Boardwalk Snacks, Linette Quality Chocolates, Tom
Sturgis Pretzels, Manatawny Creek Winery, Redner’s
Markets, and Weis Markets. Music for the evening was
provided by Michael K. Volunteers from Penn State
Berks and Alvernia University assisted with the evening’s
festivities.
Resale & Reuse Program
This waste based business will provide both short and
long term benefits to our clients, the agency, and
our community. Full time permanent warehouse and
retail jobs will continue to be created, revenue will be
reinvested back into our programs; and, by diverting
waste from our landfills we’re helping to improve the
local environment. Our ultimate goal to open a retail
thrift store has inspired numerous initiatives. Donation
bins are now located throughout Berks County and we
are hosting rummage sales open to the public on the
second Saturday of each month (from 9:00 AM – 2:00
PM) in our Second Street Technology Center. With
our online retail business on eBay and Half.com, we
are now selling clothing, books, and household items
to buyers from around the country. We are filled with
hope for continued growth that will support our
agency and the community.
Second Street Learning Center
Girl Scouts
The Girl Scouts led a summer program every
Wednesday during the months of June, July and
August. 10-15 girls from the Learning Center
participated in the program.

LINKAGES
Living in the same place for more than 6 months and
going to the same school for the entire school year;
becoming a part of a neighborhood and a community.
Planting flowers in front of your home and putting up
holiday decorations. These are all things that most
people take for granted; these are things that the
families and singles adults that live in our supportive
housing programs are learning to live with.
Five families, composed of six adults and nine children,
were stably housed in our long term transitional
housing program. All families in the Linkages program
have been there for at least one year. These families
continue to utilize the supportive services offered
by Opportunity House. Each family received a
monthly budgeting session; several of the adults were
engaged in counseling to address mental health
issues. Six of the children that were enrolled in the
Second Street Learning Center received subsidized
services to accommodate their limited income. All of
the families in Linkages participated in the adopta-family program during the holiday season. They
received all the trimmings for their Thanksgiving meal
and the children participated in all the holiday
gatherings. The holiday season is filled with fun and
festivities for all the children.
NEW BEGINNINGS
There were six single adults living in our New Beginnings
permanent housing program during the past fiscal
year; all of them having lived in the program for two
years or longer. One of the men, a Veteran, has
been in the program for four years. During his time in
the program he was able to secure his DD 214, and
develop a spending plan that has allowed him to
save some money. Andrew reports that he feels like
this is his home, this is the longest period of time he has
remained stably housed since he left the Army. Andrew
takes care of the property by keeping the bushes
trimmed and the weeds pulled. Andrew has also taught
himself how to cook some simple meals. He is always
willing to prepare a meal for the other clients in his
household.
CROSSROADS
Short term transitional housing was home to 10 families
composed of 13 adults and 18 children. Five of the
10 families successfully transitioned back into the
community and two of the families transitioned into
Opportunity House long term transitional housing. A
veteran who is a single father of three lovely young
ladies was able to secure housing in the community
with financial assistance from the SSVF program. When
this family became homeless and had to come to
the shelter they had to place their two dogs at the
humane society. The home they found has a nice
big backyard so they were able to bring the dogs’
home. Another veteran and his wife and son were
able to transition into a 2 bedroom apartment in the
community. They had been homeless for over a year,
finally they found a place to call home.
NEW BEGINNINGS II
There were five families living in our New Beginnings
II permanent housing program in FY2014 composed
of six adults and 11 children. Each family has been
in the program for more than two years. The Harris
family has been in the program since it opened in July
of 2006. During their time in the program all of the
Harris girls graduated from high school, one of the girls
graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree,
and the youngest daughter graduated from high
school last year and is now attending Reading Area
Community College. Everyone in the household was
gainfully employed during the year as well. Without the
supportive services that are provided to the families
in our supportive housing programs they may have
returned to homelessness.
We are also proud to announce that through the
Power of the Purse grant one of the women was able
to get her GED. Once she secured her GED she was
able to get a better paying job. She is now living in
an apartment in the community and her children
8
Supportive Services
continue to attend the Second Street Learning Center.
The other two families went into other programs. One
family is currently in the Salvation Army subsidized
housing program and the other family is in the
Healthchoices program through Service Access
Management. The Healthchoices program allows the
family to pay only 30% of their rent while the agency
pays the remaining 70% of the balance.
Without the collaborative efforts of all the agencies
that provide housing to the homeless population of
Berks County many of the families that we serve would
not have had a successful exit.
Supportive Services for
Veteran Families
Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF)
continued to operate and expanded this year. The
grant was renewed for a second year which began
on October 1, 2013. For the second year, we were
granted an increase in funding, going from a previous
award of $355,000 to $715,192. This increase in
funding allowed us to expand SSVF services into
Lancaster County through our contracted partnership
with Tabor Community Services a nonprofit agency
that operates in Lancaster County. We have
experienced a great working relationship with Tabor
and they have assisted us to provide services to
veterans and their families who previously had no
access to services through SSVF.
SSVF continued to provide services in Berks and
Schuylkill Counties as well. Qualified veterans and
their families were able to obtain financial assistance
for rent, security deposits, utilities, transportation
and other assistance that helped them to become
and remain stably housed. In addition to financial
assistance, each family was assigned a case manager
who worked intensively with that family to provide or
refer them to services that eliminate housing barriers.
Case managers provided a wide variety of services
such as assistance with budgeting, referrals for medical
or psychiatric treatment and housing. SSVF continued
to do extensive outreach, to locate the most at
risk veterans and their families by conducting street
outreach, attending veterans’ functions and stand
downs and through collaboration with other social
service agencies. This has allowed us to reach some
struggling veteran families, who were unaware that
they qualified for services such as SSVF. One such
example is of a single male veteran who had been
living in a makeshift campsite in the wood for several
years. Through the assistance of SSVF funds and
intensive case management, he moved out of the
woods and stayed at Opportunity House’s emergency
shelter for a brief period prior to moving into his very
own apartment. This veteran subsequently obtained
employment and was able to assume full payment of
his own rent.
During the second grant year we saw an increase
in the number of female veteran headed households
and households with children. We had one female
veteran who had been staying in a car with her four
children. With the assistance of SSVF she was able to
get permanently housed and is now working part time
and enrolled in school. Another female veteran was
able to escape an abusive relationship and become
permanently housed with the assistance of SSVF. We
also saw an increase in the number of veterans from
Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom
and Operation New Dawn, who have needed
SSVF services.
During the second grant year, SSVF served about 150
veteran families, about 32 of which have children. We
are working toward the goal of serving at least 205
veteran families before the end of the current grant on
September 30, 2014.

CLIENT OUTCOME STORY
Angie, her husband, and two daughters, ages 11
and 7, came to Pennsylvania from New York in 2013.
They had been shelter hopping and living with family
members for the past three years. Before Angie met
Angel she was in an abusive relationship which had
sent her into the shelter system in New York, and that’s
where she met Angel. They came to Reading to live
with Angie’s uncle which didn’t work out for them. They
entered the Opportunity House emergency shelter on
March 20, 2014. During their intake process Angie
seemed to be motivated to make some changes in
their lives. She wanted to do what was needed to get
her family out of the shelter system; three years of living
in a community setting was starting to wear on her and
the children.
warehouse where she enjoys scanning books and
sorting clothing for the rummage sales. She attends a
weekly nutrition class, as well as parenting classes,
and a program called Strengthening Families provided
through BCC. The Strengthening Families program
is helping her and her oldest daughter to develop
a stronger bond. On April 25, 2014 Angie and her
family moved into the Opportunity House Transitional
Housing Program. This would be the first time in three
years that this family had a place to call home. Angie
and the children are looking forward to spending the
holidays in their new home. It’s been a longtime since
they have spent a holiday season at home.
With the assistance of their case manager the family
set goals. First thing was for Angel to get a job, which
he did accomplish. Getting the girls enrolled in school
and registered in the Second Street Learning Center
were easy goals for Angie to accomplish. Once the
girls were enrolled into our program Angie had time to
look at what she needed.
Angie and Angel wanted to engage in marriage
counseling. The strain of living in shelters had affected
their marriage and they wanted to strengthen their
relationship. They also wanted to build a bond
between Angel and the girls as they are his step
daughters and not his biological children. They were
able to receive the counseling they needed through
the Berks Counseling Center’s (BCC) satellite office
here at Opportunity House.
Angie did not miss any sessions with her BCC
counselor; it seems that it has boosted her self esteem.

Volunteer Cooking Groups
In support of our new Resale and Reuse Program,
several groups and individuals assisted us with sorting
and organizing thousands of donations at our offsite
warehouse located on Lemon Street in Reading and
at our monthly rummage sales in the Technology
Center. A small sampling of groups includes the Nase/
Ramsey families, Albright College, Penn State Berks and
the Ellis Family.
Roseann’s Cooking Group
Other volunteer groups and individuals helped with
special projects in and around our agency, including
United Way of Berks County, Reading Health System,
Vanguard Group, Reading-Muhlenberg Career and
Technology Center, Alvernia University, Kutztown
University and Schneider-Electric. Volunteers from
the Foster Grandparent Program of Berks County,
a community-based program, spent their weekdays
assisting the staff in the Second Street Learning Center
and sharing their love for the children. Our AARP
Foundation receptionists/phone volunteers supported
us at the main administrative office and the Second
Street Learning Center.
Opportunity House is consistently blessed by hundreds
of volunteers who choose to invest their time and
talents with our clients. Our fantastic volunteers are
always asking us “how can we help?”
During the past year, 130 cooking teams prepared
587 meals for our shelter clients: 102 breakfasts, 142
lunches and 343 dinners! Our diverse volunteer groups
and individuals are drawn from a variety of faithbased and social organizations, businesses, schools
and families. In our shelter, we provide our clients with
3 meals per day……….7 days a week………365 days
yearly…….1,095 meal shifts annually. In 2015, we
will launch “Club 1095” in an effort to provide more
volunteer service to our clients.
Last but not least, a special thank you goes out
to all of our committee members for their incredible
support with our 30th Anniversary, Souper Bowl,
Golf Tournament, Finance Committee, Development
Committee and Board of Directors activities. Your
tireless efforts make Opportunity House a better place
for our clients and staff.
245 volunteers spent 1,352 hours assisting the
children in The Second Street Learning Center.
Volunteers rocked and fed babies, engaged in active
play with the toddlers and assisted the teachers with
activities and projects with the preschool children.
Volunteers helped with tutoring and homework help
with the school age children. Some of the groups that
assisted include Wilson High School, Twin Valley High
School, Tulpehocken High School, Albright College,
Alvernia University, Kutztown University, Penn State
Berks and the Wilson Family/Derek Murphy.
TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS: WE ARE FOREVER

12th Year!...The 2014 Souper Bowl was held on
After a beautiful day
on the golf course, the
golfers enjoyed a cocktail
hour on the patio of the
Berkshire while enjoying
the gourmet hor d’ourves
and food stations that
the chef provided. Before
the evening ended, Dave
Waligurski, committee chair,
offered up sports packages,
dinner packages, trips and events packages, and
many other items donated to the auction. The evening
also included a special “fund a need” request, where
our auctioneer asked the golfers for a donation
to send the children of the Second Street Learning
Center to camp for the summer. The evening ended
with awards to several individuals including the
winning foursome of Pat J. Shields, Connor Shields, Pat
Shields and TJ McGlinn.
Monday April 28th at The Crowne Plaza.
What is Souper Bowl?
Many of our neighbors go to bed hungry every night.
Souper Bowl aims to increase awareness of hunger
and homelessness and raise funds for the many
programs provided at Opportunity House. Attendees
select from hundreds of handmade bowls donated
by professional, amateur and student potters. Then,
guests enjoy a light supper of soups, breads and
desserts – a meal considered a feast by those who
are hungry. More than 30 local restaurants and
businesses donated food and beverages. In addition,
and always a special highlight of the event, a silent
auction was held during the event that featured
unique, collectable bowls created by professional
artists and potters.
Preview Reception: Guests celebrated with delicious
munchies and drinks provided by The Hitching Post
Restaurant & Bar. Those who attended the Preview
Party had first selection of a hand-made ceramic bowl
and first sip of all the delicious soups.

Opportunity House
Celebrates our 30th Anniversary
REACH FOR THE STARS! Opportunity House
proudly announced our 30th anniversary as a service
provider in the Greater Reading area with a kick-off
party in November 2013.
Opportunity House began in 1984 as a shelter
for men who were homeless. For nearly thirty years
the agency has met the unmet needs of the Berks
County community. As the needs of individuals and
families have changed, so has the agency grown
and changed. Services at Opportunity House
provide avenues for thousands each year to find
their dreams and answers to secure them. Dreams
are alive here and come true! The dream of
building a place where doors are always open
to anyone who needs shelter and food, was
highlighted throughout the fiscal year
2013-2014 and continued throughout all
of 2014.
The agency was founded by a small group in Reading, PA known at the time as the Reading Urban Ministries formally
known as Southwest Christian Ministries. Throughout the three decades, hundreds of thousands of individuals and
families came to Opportunity House for shelter, food, education, compassionate support and direction in gaining selfsufficiency. The ultimate goal of the shelter and housing programs continues to be for each to comfortably secure a
home of their own in the community. Today, the agency and programs have continuously and appropriately grown
to help those who need us the most, and by meeting the needs in Berks County.
To kick-off our milestone year the Board of Directors at Opportunity House hosted and served a special dinner on
Wednesday, November 20, 2013, sponsored by Anniversary Co-Chairs Keith and Suzanne Hillkirk. The members of
the board of directors invited our generous donors, the children in the learning center, and the clients who live in
our shelter and housing programs to attend the dinner. At that meal 150 guests were treated with dignity and
like royalty. The board selected a special menu and each prepared a dish that was served to our guests. The
theme of the evening was A Birthday Party! Redner’s Markets provided a huge cake and Dairy Queen in Kenhorst
donated the ice cream with chocolate sauce and sprinkles. The invocation was given by Pastor Megan Huesgen, the
pastor at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Shillington. The children from the Second Street Learning Center made
decorations for the party and helped to decorate the venue for a festive occasion.
“This will be a time to thank the entire community for helping us remain 30 years strong in Berks County”, said Modesto
Fiume, who has held the title of President at Opportunity House for the past twenty years.

Partnerships
18
Opportunity House continued to partner with St.
Joseph Medical Center in its Centering Pregnancy
program which brings women out of the exam room
and into a group setting where they receive basic
prenatal checkups, building community with other
women, and gain knowledge and skills in pregnancy,
childbirth and parenting. It is a multifaceted group
model of care that integrates the three major
components of care – health assessment, education
and support – into a unified program within a group
setting, with the support and guidance of trained
medical staff. This gives the participating moms-to-be
the opportunity to network with other moms-to-be in
the same or similar situation. They work with each other
and celebrate for each other, too.
The Learning Center partners with the Reading School
District to purchase healthy and well balanced meals.
The Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) provides
transportation services from BCIU schools to the
Learning Center.
The Learning Center partners with the Berks County
Area Agency on Aging. The Agency on Aging
operates the Berks County Foster Grandparents
Program which provides lower income seniors with an
opportunity to volunteer with children having special
needs. The program provided 12 senior volunteers
that worked Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am to
4:00 pm.
The Learning Center partners with Alvernia University
as a source for its education program externships and
community service hours.
The success of the Children’s Alliance Center of
Berks County relies upon the relationships it has
with its partner agencies due to the multi
disciplinary approach to handling all their
cases. They are Berks County Children and
Youth, Berks County District Attorney’s Office,
including detectives, prosecutors, and victim
witnesses, Reading Health System, St Joseph
Medical Center, Reading Pediatrics, Berks
Counseling Associates, Berks County Mental Health
Disabilities Program, Berks Women in Crisis, Reading
School District, Reading Police Department and
Pennsylvania State Police. <#>

In-Kind and Donations
to the trash bin from the Sleep Number store at the
Shops at Wyomissing on a monthly basis.
Donations are truly the lifeblood of our organization
and the community is very generous when it comes to
giving in-kind donations and their time to
Opportunity House.
Socks are another hot ticket item in a homeless shelter.
For the second year, Michelle Lorah, who we lovingly
term the “sock lady”, collects new and gently used socks
from her business, “The Perk Up Truck” and donates
them to homeless shelters in Reading and Berks County.
Carmen Morales also collected over 400 pairs of socks
for the men, women and children. Carolyn Schultz and
St. Frances De Sales, Robesonia collected blankets,
towels and bed sheets for the clients. Zions Lutheran
Alsace collected new hats and gloves for all of our
clients.
Janette Press is a member of Christ Presbyterian Church
in Reading. Together with Westminster Presbyterian
Church in Lancaster, they transformed the Penn National
Foundation Courtyard into a bird and butterfly garden
in early July. The finished area is both tranquil and
scenic. The children in the technology center love the
new nature area and are drawn to its beauty and bird
and butterfly activity.
We benefit from “Back to School” collections every year.
This year Sorrelli Jewelry in Kutztown held a week long
drive asking customers to bring a school item to their
store and receive a certificate for money
off a jewelry purchase. The Woman’s Club of Sinking
Spring also donated school supplies for the second half
of the school year in January.
As the holidays draw near, the in-kind donations begin
to arrive by the carloads! Individuals and businesses
deliver all kinds of goodies to our doors for our
residents. Allstate Insurance held a toy drive to benefit
the children of Opportunity House. The Barnes and
Noble Holiday Book Drive named Opportunity House
as the beneficiary and put hundreds of books into
the hands of the children of Opportunity House and
the Second Street Learning Center. Penske, Financial
and Accounting Department collected hats, scarves
and gloves for the residents. Julie Stackhouse Girl
Scout Troop collected toys and stuffed animals for
our children. Stevens & Lee law firm holds an annual
toy drive for Christmas presents for all the children of
Opportunity House. E.J. Breneman held a pajama
drive for our kids so every child had new pajamas on
Christmas Day. St. John’s, Sinking Spring collected items
for our dorms during their 30 Hour Famine activity.
Carissa Kliner donated hats, gloves, mittens and scarves
for the clients. Arlene Hafer crochets blankets for our
adult clients who are going thru an illness or trauma
and needed some extra warmth. Sue Rhoads made
In conjunction with the United Way Day of Caring,
Greater Reading Young Professionals (GRYP) read to
the children in the Second Street Learning Center and
then treated them to an ice cream social.
It was a great way to kick off the new school year!
As the temperature began to cool outside, the
donations began to increase! Blankets and coats are
always needed during the cold, winter months and
many individual and groups held coat and blanket
drives. Sue Rhoads made fleece blankets for men,
women and children at Opportunity House. Holly
Hartshorne collected and donated over 10 boxes

In-Kind and Donations
At Easter time, many groups made Easter baskets for
our children. The youth group, New Bethel Church,
Kempton, PA, made over 20 baskets for our kids. Berks
County 4H Rabbit Club made over 20 Easter baskets
which included personal care items to use after eating
all the candy! Brownie Troop 1706 assembled family
baskets full of personal care items as part of a badge
project. And what is Easter without Godiva Chocolate?
Our friends at Godiva not only gave us hundreds of
marshmallow eggs but also, over 40 gallons of ice cream
to be enjoyed on a hot summer day! Spring Township
Daisy Troop also made over 20 Easter baskets for our
children. The residents of Country Meadow made a
special gift for our men and women at Opportunity
House – a jelly bean prayer in a baggie project was
given to everyone on Easter morning.
homemade fleece blankets. Little Swatara Church of
the Brethren collected and donated children’s items for
our smallest residents at Opportunity House.
Twin Valley School had a giving tree for hats, gloves
and scarfs for our residents. Parente Beard collected
over 400 pounds of dry food for Opportunity House.
Bern Reformed United Church of Christ put together
personal care kits for the clients.
Green Valley Elementary School (Wilson School District)
Family and Consumer Sciences class made 85 loaves of
homemade bread for our clients. They partnered with
King Arthur Flour Company on a school project.
Every year, children of all ages are especially kind
in both thought and deed to the children living at
Opportunity House. Andrew Huesgen, son of Pastor
Megan Huesgen, Immanuel United Church of Christ,
Shillington, asked for gift cards and craft items in lieu
of birthday gifts so he could purchase craft items and
come to the shelter and spend some time doing crafts
with the children living at Opportunity House. Maria
Lilley is artistically inclined and makes homemade
greeting cards which she sells through out the summer
months at various places in Berks County. She
contacted Opportunity House for a list of needed items
for the babies in the Learning Center and purchased
the items using the proceeds from the sale of her
greeting cards. Seona Shah, asked for outdoor toys for
the children of Opportunity House in lieu of birthday
gifts for her, so our kids had toys to play with on the
playground.
Through out the year, businesses and organizations
donate all sorts of items to Opportunity House. Albright
College Volunteer Center held a collection drive for
books, canned goods, clothes and miscellaneous items.
Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) held a dress
down day for the cost of a personal care item that was
donated to Opportunity House. New Church Live, Bryn
Athyn, prepares a meal for our clients and a member of
their service group, Lee Hill, makes fleece blankets which
she hands out to everyone in line for their meal. Student
Nurses Association at Reading Area Community College
held a drive for paper products, condiments and spices
used in our kitchen everyday. Spring Township seniors
held an “everybody’s birthday” meeting and made a
large donation of personal care items, kitchen items and
towels to be used at Opportunity House. The Lancaster
Spinners and Weavers Guild donate beautiful, hand
made, baby booties, hats and blankets made by their
members. Several departments within Penske run donation
drives for different items needed by our residents.
Adults, as well, donate everyday items needed at the
shelter. Lauren Kemp and her family, donate needed
items through out the year. Whether it is shoes for the
children in the shelter or toys to use on the playground,
Lauren is always willing to get the items and deliver
them with a smile and a promise to be back with
whatever is needed.
In the summer, our kids were treated to two Reading
Fightin Phils baseball games courtesy of the National
Penn Bank Knothole Gang. For each game, our kids sat
in prime, reserved seating and received a visit from the
Fightin Phils mascots.

Our Mural
A group of students from the Pennsylvania
Migrant Education Summer Program and Public
Art Workshop students from Wyomissing Area Junior
Senior High School worked with instructor Michael
Miller to design and create a permanent piece
of artwork that was installed on the north-facing
wall of the corner residence of Beech Street and
Second Streets. The wall measures about 70 feet
wide and varies in height from 12 feet at the west
end to 35 feet at the east end. Due to the size and
scale of the project, the mural was begun during
the summer of 2012 and work continued during
2012-2013 school year. The mural included both
painted portions and areas of hand-cut glass
mosaic. The mural was created on a polyester
interfacing that enabled it to be worked on at
multiple sites including Millmont Elementary School
in the Reading School District, Wyomissing Area
Junior Senior High School, Second Street Learning
Center and other locations within the community.
The glass mosaic was created using a similar off-site
method by assembling the pieces onto fiberglass
mesh. Once the mural components were completed,
it was installed during the months of June and July
2013. A formal dedication ceremony was held
on Monday, September 16, 2013. Members of
the community attended the dedication at which
time they took possession of the mural. Students
and volunteers that participated in the project
were acknowledged. Representatives from the
Berks Arts Council, Berks County Community
Foundation, Opportunity House, and PA Migrant
Education Program attended the dedication.
The event was covered by the Reading Eagle
and WFMZ-TV.
The mosaic star design found in the mural has
been incorporated into the Opportunity House
30th anniversary celebration entitled “Reach for
the Stars”.
Our Mission
Opportunity House is a multi-service organization...that improves
the quality of life for children, adults and families who face various
obstacles, and supports their efforts to achieve and maintain
self-sufficiency and well-being.
