Shakespearean in scale but with all the twists and spins of modern politics, Democracy combines the fascination of a John Le Carre thriller (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Night Manager) with the dynamism of The West Wing and House of Cards. Produced in association with Macrobert Arts Centre, Democracy by Michael Frayn is, based on a true story, from the writer of the West End Smash “Noises Off”. A story of political intrigue, espionage and betrayal... who can you trust? Witty, thought-provoking and highly entertaining, Democracy is a compelling night at the theatre that you can't miss! Ivor Novello was a man of the theatre above all else, and a musician of real worth, brilliantly capturing the ease and diffident charm of the world between the wars. The songs he wrote are certainly not forgotten... Waltz of My Heart, Some Day My Heart Will Awake, Keep The Home Fires Burning, We’ll Gather Lilacs... Not only was he a composer of lavish musical plays, he was a film star appearing in two Hitchcock films, and a Hollywood screenwriter, recognised as coming up with the immortal phrase, “Me Tarzan, you Jane.” In this wonderful script by John Cairney, Scottish writer, actor, painter and raconteur, Ivor Novello’s story and songs are brought to life by an actor, two singers and a pianist. Standard £8.50 Book before Oct 1st for £5.50 ticket standard £7 £5 Monday 3 October, 11am National Theatre of Scotland and Imaginate in partnership with Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, Starcatchers and Visible Fictions, launch Theatre in Schools Scotland. SCHOOLS Pondlife Theatre in Schools Scotland is a new initiative, established to support and develop the provision of theatre in Scotland’s schools, with the ultimate aim of ensuring that every child in Scotland receives – at their nursery or school – a minimum of one performing arts production, per year, as a core part of their education. Moving school is never easy. When class bully Sharon takes an instant dislike to Martin it feels like he has an especially tough ride ahead of him. That is until he befriends Simon McGurk and his fortunes seem to change. The fickle world of playground politics soon puts pressure on their friendship, however, and Martin finds himself making a choice that will impact them both for the rest of their school days. Following success in Australia and New York, Catherine Wheels restage this energetic piece of storytelling for Scottish venues. A passionate oneman show that vividly illustrates the high stakes of classroom power play, Pondlife movingly explores the lasting legacy of childhood friendships. “Acutely perceptive and quietly devastating” New York Times “Transcends generational gaps” The Herald “The very model of audiencecapturing storytelling, this is a well-written and excitingly performed tale” London Theatre Review Note this is a schools performance only. 11 CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE'S STORY TIME CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE'S STORY TIME Storytime is an excellent introduction to theatre for children. Storytelling also builds emotional skills, imagination and it brings benefits for general wellbeing. In early times, before the book, before literacy, before the private experience of silent reading, the oral tradition represented the very lifeblood of a culture and a community. Storytelling is a complex art. Modern storytellers, like their ancient forebears, require a wide range of skills – as well as natural talents – in order to be successful. Aside from a highly imaginative and well developed gift for imagery and metaphor, and a good memory, your storytellers have dramatic ability to convey characterisation and dialogue. The storytelling sessions selected for you are also educational, funny and will have children interested in ideas, characters and classics. IS THIS A DAGGER 8+ Tuesday 20 September, 11am & 1.30pm Andy Cannon, formerly of Wee Stories Theatre is one of Scotland’s finest storytellers for children. Is this a Dagger? Is Andy’s story of Macbeth. Audiences join Andy on a thousand-year journey from fact to fiction and back again. Shakespeare’s celebrated play Macbeth is a tale most foul, of witchcraft, deceit and murder. The show was nominated for 2007 CATS Award for Best Show for Children and Young People and described as “Strikingly heartfelt and intelligent… immensely classy stuff” by The Scotsman. In this special anniversary year marking 400 years since Shakespeare's death Andy’s award winning storytelling helps deepen pupil's engagement and involvement in Shakespeare and raises questions to be explored in English, Social Studies and Expressive Arts. Standard 12 £6 Scottish Youth Theatre (SYT) is one of Scotland’s national youth performing arts companies and has been providing theatre arts experiences to young people in Scotland since 1977. The courses, workshops, classes and performances produced by SYT each year involve tens of thousands of young people and the company has created hundreds of successful productions over the last 39 years. THE DRAGON STOORWORM THE WEE BANNOCK Saturday 19 November, 11am Sunday 30 October, 11am The Dragon Stoorworm is a traditional Scottish tale of a dragon as large as Scotland who demands “just one delicious young person to eat every day, starting with the King’s daughter”... find out what happens next... Just a few ingredients can make something amazing, something magical, maybe even something that comes to life… A baker in a baker’s shop has a day that he’ll never forget. Crumbs! Standard £6 CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE'S STORY TIME SYT’s alumni can be found working in all types of professions as well as theatre, film, television and radio. SYT’s famous alumni include Gerard Butler, Colin McCredie, Karen Gillan, Kirstie Steele and Andrew Still. Wood was sawn for signs to enable visitors to navigate throughout the site. We dug up a wheelbarrow load of muddy clay from the stream that cuts through the orchard. This is being used in a bird house and fairy house constructed from willow. The clay is mixed with straw and then applied to the willow frame to create surfaces for the houses. We also made a start painting signs using oil paints and spray paints. These are constructed from old palettes and other bits of wood we have gathered on site. We are also a capturing participants foot prints to be used as markers across the site." 17 ARTS PARTICIPATION Jumping beans for babies, ballet beans for toddlers and afterschool activities for teens... keeping your kids fit, active and creative in East Renfrewshire.
