Vesterdalen Lodge No. 2-131 • Sons of Norway • Auburn/Kent, WA • Chartered October 23, 1983
Hilsen Fra Presidenten
Ah, the longer summer days are
here! Time to get out and about to enjoy our beautiful world! Time to make
memories!
When I was 9 we traveled back to
Norway to visit family. I was 2½ when
we immigrated and that trip really cemented the connection with the land
of my birth. We were living in Roundup,
MT in 1955 and after several months
of planning and saving money for the
journey, in June we boarded a train for
New York. The train journey took three
days. We boarded the SS Stavangerfjord
for a seven day ocean crossing to Bergen. At the dock waiting
for us were my Bestefar Nesheim and my cousin Johan Nesheim.
The train ride to Voss took a couple of hours and another short
ride to Nesheim station, close to Granvin, and we were there—
Grandma and Grandpa’s house! For three months we visited family in Hardanger and Rogaland—Voss, Vikedal, Vats, Stavanger,
Talgje, and Nearbo. Getting used to the long daylight hours
took a while. I remember getting up and wandering around my
grandparent’s house wondering why no one was up. It was daylight where was everyone? Nobody was outside either. Finally,
I found Bestemor in the kitchen just starting breakfast. I think
I must have gotten up about 4 am and thought it was time to
start the day. Because of that trip, I have close connections to
Norway that continue to grow. My cousin Aslaug Lorentzen and
her granddaughters, Kristine and Marie, will be arriving in July
and we will be traveling to Montana and Yellowstone. We also
will be at Trollhaugen for the Steak and Salmon Fry and Vesterdalen’s picnic, July 16.
Tusen tak goes to Margaret Bullock from the Tacoma Art
Museum for her very interesting and informative program describing Edvard Munch and the Sea. The TAM is a wonderful
place to visit and make memories with your family! The Munch
exhibit runs through July 17.
Congratulations to the members who earned pins for recruiting new members and thanks to everyone who is involved
in making our lodge meetings special. Our Social Committee did
a fantastic job this month with their strawberry dessert. I heard
it was a “dump” cake, but the correct title is Strawberry Poke ‘n
Pour Cake and I definitely want the recipe!

We need volunteers for the Int’l Convention!

District 2 Convention Report
Jorunn Ruff, Dianne Snell, John Nyseth, and John Fatland
wish to thank Vesterdalen Lodge for the opportunity to represent the lodge at the District 2 convention in Coeur d’Alene.
Dianne has attended many conventions and considers this event
one of the best. Harald Harfarger Lodge did a great job planning
a convention that was very informative, had a fun cruise on the
lake, and elected a board with lots of experience. Chris Hicks
has been involved in SON most of her life and will do a great
job as president.
John Fatland presented 31 pillowcases to Sally Dwyer from
Petersburg, Alaska who was the chairwoman for the project.
The total number of pillowcases is at 254, enough for two years,
and more may be coming! John thanks everyone who took patterns and returned pillowcases.

At the Last Meeting
The June meeting was both an enjoyable and informative

Well worth the trip to see this event. During the social hour,
cake topped with strawberries was enjoyed. A special thanks to
Pat Braaten and Denny Carlsen for the help they provide at
meetings in setting up, serving and coffee making. The $10.00
cash prizes for members went to Sonja Whitcombe and Vicki
Wickham. The raffle prizes went to Jill Leghorn, Marvin Nelson and Florence Amundsen. Congratulations to all.
