LYNCHBURG — As it has
been known to do a time or two
over the years, Pulaski County
High School turned the prep
football world in these parts upside down again Friday night in
Lynchburg with a whirlwind
17-point fourth quarter .rally
that resulted in a huge 31-28 victory over the state's number
three ranked Group AAA team.
E.C. Glass entered the game
4-0. Pulaski Co. was 3-1 with an
11-point loss at Danville the only
blemish. The Hilltoppers were
the favorite and were at home.
Things went about status quo for
three quarters, but in the fourth
quarter the odds, the home field,
talent, and all that other stuff
didn't seem to matter anymore.
The Hilltoppers were overrun by
a stirred up band of Cougars,
and maybe fortunate to have lost
by just three.
The final margin came on a
17-yard field goal by Brian Duncan on the game's last play from
scrimmage. When the officials'
hand went up, and the clock
stopped, there was only .one tick
left.
"They never really stopped
us," said PCHS quarterback
Brad Burrus in a deliriously
happy locker room. "I didn't
think it would be like this, but
our backs ran hard, our line
blocked hard...we just really
wanted to win this game. I guess
they stopped us a few times inside, but when they switched, we
switched. There always seemed
to be something open," said Burrus.
But while the new .PCHS
winged-T offense was once again
impressive, defense was finally
the determining factor. .
"We thought we could move
the ball," said PCHS head coach
Joel Hicks. "I can't say I thought
we'd score 31 points. I was afraT
Glass might score 28 and they
did, but when we needed it the
most, we got a great defensive
effort from our kids. That really
turned the tide. I'm beginning to
really like this team. These are
fun kids.to coach. I can't say
enough about them.
"I know we surprised a lot of

Pulaski County celebrates their 31-28 upset over E.C. Glass

LYNCHBURG — It was as

"You get lucky sometimes,"
Blundin said with a smile.
Blundin also had three touchdown passes and no interceptions as Virginia rolled to a 34-3
victory.
"We really, needed that today," .
Welsh said of Blundin, who had
missed the previous two games
with an infection in his throwing
elbow. .
Blundin finished with 238

story. Glass had gained 213 yards going into the final quarter. On its final three possessions, the Hilltoppers gained a
total of exactly one yard.
"We played much better defensively the second half," said
Akers. "Coach Hicks cranked us
up at halftime. After a while that
number 29i (Hilltopper tailback
Ronnie Turner) didn't want to
run anymore. We just got pumped.
"Glass made a couple of adjustments defensively, but it
didn't slow us down much because we adjusted well to what
they did and just kept truckin',"
said Akers who played his customary solid game on both sides,
of the scrimmage line even
though he was worried about his
mother who was spending her

Bowden opens bag of tricks, finds rout of Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) —
Master magician Bobby Bowden
used a few of his trademark
tricks to make Michigan disappear on Saturday.
Two sleight-of-hand plays, including a shovel pass from Brad
Johnson to William Floyd on a
fake field goal, sparked topranked Florida State to a 51-31
victory over the No. 3 Wolverines
in a wild, wacky game at Michi-
gan Stadium.
It was nothing new for Bowden, who has tricked more people than Houdini with his clever,
calls.
"You're always looking for the
odd stuff with them," Michigan
coach Gary' Moeller said. "They
executed their trick plays very
we]l: When you're not stopping
their base offense, it makes $he
trick plays become even more
effective,"
The Seminoles (4-0) took the
lead for good at 13-7 on the fake
kick with 7:36 left in the first
quarter and went on to score the
most points ever against Michigan (2-1) at home and the most
by any opponent since Northwestern beat the Wolverines
55-24 in 1958.
"I don't think there should be
any doubt about who's No. 1,"
said Florida State cornerback
Terrell Buckley, whose 40-yard
TD interception return on the
second play from scrimmage
gave the Seminoles an early lift.
"If there are still any doubters,
they should go have their heads
examined by a shrink."
Johnson, a backup quarterback who holds on kicks, took
the snap on the fake field goal
and shoveled a 4-yard pass to
Floyd, who ran in it for the
touchdown.
"We thought we could run that
on them," Bowden said. "We saw
something in the films. In fact,
we thought we could run it again
but thdy smelled it out the other
time."

we did was something special.
That was about as good as you're
ever going to see," said Hicks.
Things didn't begin well at all
for PCHS. On the game's first
possession punter Billy Ingles
muffed the snap. On Glass' first
play quarterback Fred White rolled left and hit John LaPrade
with a 21-yard touchdown pass
as the Cougars fell behind 7-0
with stunning quickness.
Following the kickoff PCHS
began a long drive. The Cougars
moved 73 yards in 15 plays, but
with first and goal from the one
couldn't bang it over.
It looked like a wasted effort,
but on the first play after the
Hilltoppers took over at the two,
fullback Robert Noell fumbled.
Cougar Carl Lewis scooped up
the pigskin, zipped eight yards
to the end zone and the game
was tied 7-7.
It didn't stay that way long.
On the third play following the
kickoff Glass tailback Ronnie
Turner motored off the left side
of the Cougar defense, cut back
toward the middle of the field,
and galloped 63 yards to the end
zone and Glass went back up by
seven with still almost two
minutes left in the first quarter.
Nobody could stop anybody.
After the kickoff PCHS drove 72
yards in 10 plays as Lewis scored
on an eight-yard sweep with 8:54
left in the half and the tally was
14-14.
It came as no surprise to anybody that Glass promptly drove
72 yards in 14 plays as White
slipped over from the one. The
conversion kick was blocked by
Cougar Dane Eller, still Glass
led by six, 20-14 with only 50 seconds left in the half.
But this game was not going to
settle down. On the kickoff Cougar Andre Eaves bolted 42 yards

can stop Harry," said Rusty Wallace, who has seen Gant's hot
streak up close and personal.
"When Harry wins a pole, you
know he has it going."
Gant goes into Sunday's Tyson
Holly Farms 400 with the chance
to do something no Winston Cup
driver has done since 1972: win
five straight races.
Gant, of nearby Taylor.sville,
N.C., is 6-for-6 in September, including two Busch Grand
National victories, and his pole
win Friday was his first in four
years.
Gant isn't impressed. ,
"I don't think about anything
else but racing," said Gant, who
spent part of the past week
working on a building project
behind his restaurant in Taylorsville, doing media interviews
on a cellular telephone.
"I didn't get a whole lot done
for a while."
But Gant, at 51 the oldest
driver ever to win a Winston Cup
race, as well as a pole, is enjoying the sudden attention for one
reason.
Tm enjoying it, but the
plays for the final
h
The biggest payoff for _ Leo
Jackson's entire Skoal Racing
team could come Sunday if Gant
*does wins again, The Unocal 76
Challenge, a bonus of $7,600 per
event for a driver winning both:
the pole and the race, has climbed to $144,400, meaning a victory by Gant'Sunday would be
worth more than $200,000.
Gant leads all drivers with five
wins this year, while Allison and
series points leader Dale Earnhardt have three each.
Almost lost in the excitement
over Gant's streak is the battle
between defending champion
Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd for
the $1 million Winston Cup title.
Earnhardt, who finished third
last week, leads Rudd by 59
points with five races remaining,
including Sunday's 400-lapper
on the five-eighths-mile North
Wilkesboro Speedway oval.
