High Marks With Room To Grow
The yearly report card for
the school was released last
month and La Follette made
leaps in the right direction.

“If we have amazing, engaging classrooms, and we have a great school,
graduation rates will go up, test scores
will go up, and kids will come to
school more,” Principal Chad Wiese
said about the results of our yearly
school report card.
This past month, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released
the annul DIP report cards. These report cards give our school a “grade” for
how well we’re doing as a school. They
give us a grade on a number of things,
including Student Growth, Student
Achievement, Attendance Rates, and
more. This year La Follette moved up
7 points, the largest jump in the school
district, putting us back into the “Meets
Expectations” category. This means
that all of the hard work our staff and
students put in last year was didn’t go
to waste.
Last year, La Follette fell down into the
“Meets Few Expectations” category.
The thing about these reports is that
they are a reflection of the previous
school year, so the report for this year
really reflects the data from last year.
Nonetheless, this just shows once again
that last year, staff and students worked
hard to raise our score.
Now, when I say we worked hard, this
doesn’t mean that the score of our
report card dictated the improvements
and goals that we set last year. I was
able to sit down with Principal Wiese
for an interview about the reports
and he set a few things straight. “The
biggest portion of our jump, we jumped
a little over seven points which was the
biggest jump in the district, was the fact
that the year prior we were penalized
for student absenteeism,” Wiese said,
“We got five points back for that,” he
later continued.
During another part of the interview,
Wiese and I talked about the school’s
plans for next year’s report card. “We
have a school improvement plan that
we tend more closely than the metrics
of the school report card and we make
sure at La Follette that there are quarterly, weekly, if not daily checkups on
our progress, while school is going. We
care about how things are going right
now,” Wiese said.
All in all, the DPI report card, though
a helpful tool and way to measure our
progress here isn’t the real reflection of
our school or our students. The work
we do every day, and the work of our
wonderful staff is the real reflection of
our school, and the DPI agrees, we’re
doing some darn good work.

LHS Staffer Gets Topnotch Award
September’s Topnotch
Teacher award goes to La
Follette business teacher
Darrin Graham!

If you have ever passed The Lancer
Zone during lunch, you may have
noticed the school store’s advisor,
Darrin Graham. The Lancer Zone is
only one of the multiple activities here
that Graham is involved with here at
La Follette. Besides the school store,
Graham is also the advisor for the
career internship class offered fourth
block, one of the main organizers in
the creation of putting Summit Credit
Union in La Follette along with being
one of the advisors of the La Follette
DECA chapter that was restarted last
school year.
For all of the hard work that Graham
does around here in the business
department and at La Follette, there’s
no doubt that Graham was awarded
the Topnotch Teacher award for
September 2014. The Topnotch
Teacher award is given out monthly to
local area teachers who give back not
only to their students but help create
a better society as well. Teachers are
nominated, and then chosen.
Darrin Graham was nominated by
Sara Investment Real Estate; one of
the business partners’ that Graham
partners with in his business classes.
“It was very unexpected, flattering
and humbling,” Graham explained
about when he found out that he was
The Lance
nominated.
For being a Topnotch Teacher of the
Month, Graham was awarded with a
segment on the news highlighting his
work here at La Follette that was aired
on September 8th and a 30 second
commercial that aired throughout the
month of September.
Graham called being awarded for
the Topnotch Teacher award for
September 2014 was humbling and he
encourages other students to nominate
other teachers and staff members here
at La Follette for either the Topnotch
Teacher Award on News 3, or the
Crystal Apple award from NBC 15. “I
look at our school and I love teaching
here because of the staff that I work
with and the students. I see so many
teachers that should be recognized as
well,” Graham later added.
Congrats to Darrin Graham for
receiving the Topnotch Teacher award
for September 2014!

Band Potentially Adding Splash of Color
With a new year comes new
ideas of adding a color guard
to La Follette’s marching
band.

BAND, ATTENTION! If you don’t
have the urge to say the words “and
snap” right now, odds are you’re not a
member of the La Follette High School
Marching Band. Although, if you’ve
ever attended an event where the band
has marched, you’ve seen the way
they perform. They have drum majors in front, who command and lead
the band. The band then marches and
plays, as they follow the drum majors.
La Follette’s drum majors this year are
Amelia Stoeber, Samantha Goldade and
Citrine Samrah.
The marching band performs several times throughout the school year,
including half time at a few select La
Follette home football games. Each
member of the band wears matching
uniforms, including the drum majors.
But, due to the drum majors having a
different job than the band members,
they don’t have instruments, but instead have batons that they use to lead
the band as they march.
The band has everything needed for a
good performance. Though there is one
thing that could improve their marching shows tremendously, a color guard.
What is a color guard? Well, a modern
color guard is a uniformed group of
people that perform in a way similar
to dance theater. They can be found
in many American universities, high
schools, colleges and independent drum
corps. Using props and movements, a
color guard accompanies a marching
band show. The most typical props
used include flags, sabers, rifles, batons
and ribbons.
La Follette had a color guard in the
past when a former Lancer who
transferred here her junior year had
the idea. She had a color guard at her
former school and wanted to pass the
flag on to La Follette.
Now, about 10 years later, a few students within the band have had the
thought and ambition to want to start a
color guard for our La Follette marching band. They feel it would be a nice
addition to our school marching band
and would even help in causing more
engagement from spectators in the
performance.
Wait...Can Blood Actually Drive?
The American Red Cross
Blood Drive is once again
back at La Follette.

Four times a year, the Red Cross hosts
a blood drive here at La Follette. The
dream of the La Follette blood drive is
to get at least 70 pints per drive. So, if
you are 16 years old, and interested in
making dreams come true then make
sure you sign up for the next blood
drive.
Giving blood is no strange subject. In
the United States alone, 9.2 million people give blood every year.
However, the need for blood is always
present. Every 2 seconds, someone in
the U.S. is in need of a blood transfusion. That adds up to a need of 41,000
blood donations everyday. Even though
only 1 pint of blood is taken from each
donor, but a single car accident victim
can need up to 100 pints of blood.
In order for the blood drive to be
successful, it takes hard work on the
parts of HOSA and Key Club to work

and advertise the event. Kit Laibly, our
Coordinator of Student Engagement is
in charge of making a connection with
the Red Cross. The Red Cross is then
in charge of getting the blood to people
in need.
When talking with Laibly about what it
takes to have a blood drive she honestly
responded with, “blood”. Laibly also
added “I have been giving blood since my
junior year here at La Follette”. I thought
that was pretty cool so I asked her if she
ever has flashbacks to her high school
days while she gives blood. “It’s exactly
the same,” she responded with a hair flip.
“Snacks are always a great perk to giving
blood,” Laibly added with a wink.
I asked Laibly if she had anything else to
add, she responded with “The Red Cross
rep told me that LHS is her best blood
drive and that we have the best students.
I’m so proud of our Lancer students”.

Wicked, Wild,Weather on the West Coast
Droughts in California are
causing massive wildfires
throughout the entire state.

Palm trees, beaches, mountains and just
that good feeling of being in California. What you most likely don’t realize
is that California currently in one of
the worst droughts ever. With these
droughts brings on huge wildfires, one
of which started in Yosemite National
Park last month, but that’s not even the
worst of it.
California is in their third year of an
extreme drought. One that’s caused
reservoirs to drop to extremely low
levels, water restrictions put in place and
putting tons of agriculture at risk. Over
80% of the state is in an (official) ex-
treme drought. If this trend of minimal
to no rain continues, it is almost guaranteed that food prices will rise across
the United States since there will be a
shortage in fruits, nuts and vegetables.
Especially things like celery, pistachios
and kiwis where over 95% is grown
solely within California. With nothing
looking better in the near future, another issue has started popping up, even
more than the usual.
Wildfires which are causing thousands
of residents to be evacuated across the
state have been higher than usual. There
have been over 5,000 this year so far
compared to an average of 3,900. The
drought is helping these wildfires become hotter and harder to contain than
usual. For example, last month a wildfire was burning more than 5,000 acres
inside of Yosemite National Park. And
that’s not even the biggest one this year.
As more and more fires pop up across
the state, firefighters are preparing for
a year round season of them. There is
also extra help from firefighters from
states as far away as Alaska and Florida.
Hopefully Smokey the Bear can help put
out some of these fires.
To make matters worse, these fires are
coming at a high cost. This year alone,
wildfires have cost over $181 million. A
recent fire, the King Fire, has came with
a hefty price tag of over $53 million.
And that’s not even the highest amount
this year. A still burning fire in Klamath
National Forest has ranked up a $86
million price tag.
Although there have not been any
catastrophic events yet, as conditions
worsen across The Golden State, there
will be more consequences that the
United States will suffer as a whole as
the droughts continue.
The Newest Potential Threat to the US
ISIS works with Mexican
Cartels on Terrorist attacks

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
(ISIS) are planning an attack on the
United States. They may be not only
looking to attack, but to conquer the
US. Last year a drug cartel, by the
name of Knights Templar, knocked
out a power grid in Mexico, leaving
half a million citizens in darkness.
Many cartels in Mexico are not fond
of the US and are driven by money,
which ISIS has a lot of. Instead of ISIS
using their own people to attack the
US all the way from the Middle-East,
they could pay cartels to carry out an
attack for them.
ISIS has also been in contact with
known criminal gangs in Juarez. ISIS
has money and drug cartels will do
anything for money, so ISIS and these
cartels are a dangerous combination.
ISIS is known for killing dozens of
people at a time by holding public exOctober 2014
ecutions and crucifixions among other
things. On August 19 a video was
posted on YouTube, of the decapitation of a US journalist, James Foley,
missing in Syria since 2012.
The extremists then threaten the life
of another US journalist. On September 2 a video was posted of the
decapitation of Steven Sotloff, another
US journalist’s decapitation. Then on
September 13, yet another video was
posted showing the execution of the
British aid worker, David Haines.
ISIS made a statement directed to British Prime Minister David Cameron,
threatening more destruction if Britain
keeps its “evil alliance with America”.
At the end of the video the executioner threatens the life of another British
citizen held captive, Alan Henning. All
three men are believed to have been
killed by the same man.

LHS Digest Ebola Outbreak in West Africa
Here’s what you’ve
missed from the month of
September!

Comedian and actress Joan Rivers died
at the age of 81 on September 4th in
Manhattan after going into cardiac arrest
a week earlier.
People across the United States came together on September 11th to remember
the attacks on the World Trade Center
and Pentagon and all the lives that were
lost.
The widely popular iPhone 6 was
unveiled, along with the Apple Watch
and broke records with the number of
preorders.
Multiple NFL players caused controversies, including Vikings running back
Adrian Peterson for child abuse and
Ravens running back Ray Rice for aggravated assault against his wife.
Category three hurricane Odile made
landfall in the Baja California region of
Mexico. This caused major flooding and
damages in the tourist cities of Cabo San
Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
Steven Sotloff, 31, became the second
American to be beheaded by terrorist
group ISIS.
A fraternity at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee was found to have
given girls at a party date rape drugs.
Their president of the chapter was
charged with multiple drug charges.
A man with a knife in Washington DC
jumped the fence to the White House
and managed to open the front doors.
He was immediately arrested.
This year the Lance Newspaper has
attained a mascot, Donald the rubber
duck. He will be featured in one picture
a month so be sure to search for Donald
next time you pick up a Lance!

Ebola rapidly claims the
lives of thousands of South
Africans

Ebola is a virus that has recently had
an outbreak in certain countries in
West Africa. These countries include
Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and
Sierra Leone. Though the disease isn’t
something that can be caught by being
in the same room as someone who
is infected – there needs to be direct
contact with bodily fluids. More than
5,300 people have been infected with the
Ebola virus and more than 2,600 have
died, as of September 17th.
After you’ve been exposed to Ebola,
symptoms usually appear somewhere
between eight to ten days later. In the
beginning the disease feels a lot like the
flu, with symptoms including a fever,
diarrhea, vomiting, headache, rash, and/
or aches and pains. But as the disease
progresses, the symptoms worsen and
victims may vomit blood, or bleed from
under the skin or from their eyes or
mouth. Although patients will have
severe bleeding, that’s not usually what
kills them. What does, however, is when
the blood vessels of the body begin
leaking fluid. This causes the blood
pressure to drop significantly, which will
cause organ failure.
On Tuesday, September 16th, president
Obama announced that there would be
more military resources and medical
resources transported into West Africa.
The United States would be providing
Liberia with the construction of as
many as 17 treatment centers and 1,700
beds. They will also be deploying 3,000
military employees, which include
doctors, to Liberia and Senegal.
Although Ebola is affecting Arica,
you don’t really need to worry about
catching it here in the United States.
The chances of Ebola spreading to
the United States are very small. Any
travelers coming to the United States
with a fever will have their travel history
checked, and anyone from West Africa

is automatically being screened for
the virus. According to the New York
Times, “It helps that Ebola does not
spread nearly as easily as Hollywood
movies about contagious diseases might
suggest. In 2008, a patient who had
contracted Marburg – a virus much
like Ebola – in Uganda was treated at a
hospital in the United States and could
have exposed more than 200 people to
the disease before anyone would have
known what she had. Yet no one became
sick.”
Sadly, there is a 90% fatality rate for
the Ebola virus, and there is no cure.
Though, it appears that a very small
percentage of people in West Africa
are immune to Ebola. There has also
recently been a therapy treatment called
Zmapp. Zmapp is a combination of 3
different monoclonal antibiotics that
bind to the virus, so that the immune
system can clear the virus. This drug,
however, is not a vaccine. Vaccines are
given to people before being infected
with a disease, therapy treatments are
typically given after being infected.
The Ebola virus currently doesn’t have
any form of vaccine. It’s too early to
know if Zmapp is the cure for Ebola,
but there has been a success with the
drug. Dr. Kent Brantly, age 33, was
helping patients with Ebola when he
was diagnosed with the disease. He tried
Zmapp and was discharged, and deemed
cured of the Ebola virus. Although it
has had a success case, Zmapp is not
available in West Africa, due to it still
being in its experimental stage. So, the
most that can be done is to nurse people
threw the virus, until their passing. The
United States is trying many different
methods in attempt to find a cure for
the virus. Hopefully, a cure will be
found soon, so we can put an end to this
terrible disease.

What Grinds
Your Gears?
Rush hour in our hallways.
By Christina Peterson
Hey Lancers, you know what really
grinds my gears? Already having to deal
with hallway traffic. I mean come on,
we’re only our second month into school
and already hallways and stairwells are
backed up with people! Seven minutes
in between classes may seem like a lot of
time, but having to go from the A-Wing
to the E-Wing and still wanting time to
chat with friends can feel like mission
impossible. To make things even harder,
there always seems to be a ton of people
bunched up in the hallway or on the
stairwell that you need to walk through.
Between people just standing in
your way, walking as slow as a snail,
horsing around and bumping into you,
maneuvering through the hallways could
easily be the most annoying part of your
day. Unfortunately, hallway traffic is
something that’s proven to be recurring.
In between every class, you have to deal
with dodging the daily crowds of people.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I
think it’s a tedious time waster.
The thing to decide is which passing time
is the worst. “I think it’s before third
block-after lunch-when everybody is
still, like, in the ‘Lunch Mode’. Ya know,
where everybody’s like ‘Oh, lets chill out
for another 7 minutes even though we
have class...now.’ And then they stand in
the middle of the hall and think it’s lunch
time still,” Aqila Matthews (10) said.
There are only two ways I can think of
to change the current hallway injustices.
First, we could get bigger hallways. More
space equals less bunching up. If we add
more space in the halls, maybe they’ll be
enough room to get by when someone’s
in the middle of the hallway having a
Facebook group chat in real life. Or
secondly (this one’s kinda crazy, so stay
with me here), we could change our own
behavior! We need to start becoming selfaware of the hallway crimes being commit
right in front of us. Everyone’s been a
victim of being stuck behind that person
who walks too slowly, or having to wait
for a crowd of people to diverse so you
can be on your merry way and I think
we can all agree that it sucks. But let’s
be honest, you’re lying if you say you’ve
never been the cause of it. We’ve all fallen
into the trap of blocking someone’s path,
but instead of repeating the behavior, let’s
make it stop.
That’s right La Follette; it’s time to make
a change. If you find yourself being the
cause of a hallway back-up or slow down,
step off to the side or keep it moving.

Are you ever tired of eating the same old
thing time after time that you go out for
food? Fast food places provide a quick
easy meal, but what about when you’re in
the mood for a nice sit down restaurant.
Everyone’s in the mood to try new
things, so here are a few good new places!
The first unique place in downtown
Madison is The Plaza Tavern. It is
designed just like a bar with a pool table
and gray paneling swallows up the walls.
It has a burger joint menu with anything
from your favorite types of sandwiches,
with a few surprising ones included such
as Plazaburger, grilled tuna sandwich and
cheese, and a hot roast beef sandwich.
That BBQ joint is far from your basic
BBQ restaurant. They add their own
unique twist into each item on the menu.
Some of the few fan favorites include rib
basket, rib tips and smoked chicken. I
guarantee you’ll find something on the

You Have Good Reason To Be Afraid
The supernatural is alive
and thriving throughout the
Madison area.

Madison, Wisconsin, as we all know is
a city rich with history. However, what
some of us may not know is that in
many locations around the city, its history tends to manifest itself in a rather
supernatural way. Madison is considered
to be a hotspot for the supernatural.
There are many documented cases of
supernatural occurrences within the city
limits, ranging anywhere from full form
apparitions, disembodied voices and
footsteps, bright orbs of unexplained
light flying through the night, and even
poltergeist activity. You name it we’ve
got it, and if you’re feeling brave and adventurous this October or get a kick out
of proving “supernatural” phenomenon
otherwise, these are some of the most
notoriously haunted locations around
Madison.
Lake View Tuberculosis Sanitarium
is a beautiful building located at 1200
Northport Dr. It’s a massive building
used to house tuberculosis patients
from 1930 to 1966. The building itself
is not considered to be haunted but the
cemetery and woods nearby are. Sightings of strange mists and apparitions are
very common in this area. Along with
being supposedly haunted many people
stay away from the area because of the
strange activity that local kids partake
in. Strange bits of bone, piles of logs and
rocks, and spray paint designs can be
found in the area and by some could be
considered works of a more satanic force
at play, while others argue it’s just some
kids up to no good. Who’s to say until
you visit and see for yourself.
Orton Park, is located at 1103 Spaight
St. It was the sight of Madison’s first
graveyard. All the bodies were exhumed
in the late 1800’s and moved to a newer,
bigger cemetery. Reports of disembodied voices being heard in the dead of
night are common. However, the park
is located in a densely populated area of
the city. Perhaps they could be voices
from the city traveling downwind? Another common phenomenon from the
area is the sighting of a little boy alone at
the park in the dead of night. Maybe he
just wants a playmate.
Picnic Point is located at 2002 University Bay Dr. Documented cases of
strange orbs of light surfacing out of the
south side of the narrows in the swamp,
rising into the sky, and flying toward
the capitol are very common. Some
experts explain these orbs as swamp gas
or weather balloons. Others believe it to
be the ghost of August Kutzblock, who
was the original designer of the dome to
our capitol and also happened to commit
suicide after walking off the edge of
Picnic Point into the water.
La Follette High School is said to be
haunted around the Auditorium and
the classrooms behind it. Disembodied
footsteps can be heard when alone in
these areas and some reports go so far as
to even say they heard the stage curtains
open and close even though nobody is
around to operate them.
All of these places are open to the public
and are relatively easy to get to. Whether or not you feel like investigating the
supernatural, disproving it, or just want
to avoid these places all together, now
you know. Happy hunting kids.

We’re about a month into school so
new relationships are in full bloom.
The freshman guys are just starting to
settle down with their new found loves,
but they’re really struggling to find the
proper place to take their girl. Luckily
for them, we live in a great city for hot
dates. So all of you freshman out there
tell your parents to get the car started
because I’m about to open your eyes
and enlighten you on the ideal dating
destinations in Madtown.
The Arboretum: The crisp autumn air
does nothing but accentuate this already

ideal outdoor setting. With the trees
changing colors overhead and the leaves
crunching below, it doesn’t get much
better than holding your date close while
strolling through this enchanting area.
Camp Randall: You can’t go wrong with
taking your girl to a Badger game. In
Madison we bleed red and white, and
there’s no way she’ll pass up on going
to see the Wisconsin football team in
action. It’s nothing but you, her, and
80,000 other screaming fans.
Madison B-Cycle: These bike rental stations located around the city are perfect
for anyone just looking to go for a ride.
The two of you can cruise anywhere
you wish for only a small fee. The most
important thing to remember though,
it’s not miles you ride; it’s the moments
you share.
The Farmers Market: If you take your
lady here she’ll love you for a lifetime.

The fall selection they have down on
the square is second to none. First you
sweeten her up with a honey stick or
two, then you toss her a caramel apple
and to cap things off get her a warm
cup of apple cider. If you can manage all
that, she’ll never let you go.
Hopefully my suggestions helped you in
your quest to spice up the dating scene,
and if not too bad so sad. I wish all of
La Follette’s young couples the best of
luck, and to all of you singles out there,
just keep on keeping on.

Smash Hit! NFL Under the Microscope
There’s more to it then just
short skirts and dainty girls.

Whether you identify yourself as a skilled
athlete or a book worm, the tennis
environment is a place where you are free
to be you. Each year, the group of girls
brings a different flavor to the season
unique from any of the years before. Not
only do players learn tennis skills, but life
skills. Responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork are all
intricate parts of being a member of the
Girls Tennis Team.
There are no prerequisites; you didn’t
have to play in middle school, or start
your freshman year of high school, or do
any intense training camps over the summer. If you are an upperclassman who
has never stepped foot on a tennis court,
you still have the potential to be a star.
Speech Clinician at Sennett Middle
School, Nan Perschon, is the head varsity
coach. La Follette High School’s very
own physical education teacher, Becca
Schmitz, is the junior varsity coach.
LaFollette Alumni, Brian Mixtacki, is the
freshman coach. You may already be familiar with the coaches, but if not, tennis
provides a great opportunity to get to
know them, as well as other high school
girls with similar interests and goals.
The season begins in early August with
morning practices. As the school year
approaches, practice times change to
afternoon. Players have, on average, two
matches a week. The junior varsity and
freshman conference matches are in September, while varsity competes at their
conference match in October.
Many players on the team hold jobs, take
AP classes, play other sports, and are involved in clubs. Step out of your comfort
zone and don’t make excuses. Trying

Recent domestic violence
allegations are dragging
down the league.

The NFL has been in the news a lot
lately; unfortunately, it has been for all
the wrong reasons. A number of players
have been involved in some big scandals.
The general population knows exactly
who and what I’m talking about, however
some individuals are totally in the dark
with all this. So to all of you who have
been living under a rock these past four
weeks allow me to enlighten you.
Ray Rice, former running back for the
Baltimore Ravens was involved in a
domestic abuse incident earlier this year.
Video came out this past month of the
incident where Rice is seen striking his
fiancé across the face and knocking her
unconscious. As a result the Ravens
organization cut Rice from the team and
the NFL suspended him indefinitely.
Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian
Peterson has been in in the spotlight for a
recent child abuse incident. Peterson used
a switch on his young son and as a result
the boy suffered multiple lacerations. The
Vikings have placed him on their inactive
list and the NFL is currently running a
thorough investigation of the incident.
Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathon
Dwyer was arrested in mid-September
on suspicion of aggravated assault. He
allegedly head butted his wife and was

said to have thrown a shoe at his eighteen
month old child. He has been forbidden
to leave the state of Arizona and is to
have no contact with the victims. The
Cardinals have deactivated him from all
team activities.
There are other individuals that have been
involved in similar incidents but for the
sake of keeping this article short and to
the point I’ve decided keep the list slim.
The actions committed by these high
profile players have sparked outrage
throughout the country. “I feel like their
careers are getting to their heads and so
they think they can do whatever they
want,” Sam Goldade (12) said. Major
sponsors are cautiously waiting to see
how the NFL handles these situations
and as a result the national football league
is at risk of losing a lot of revenue.
Is this the push the NFL needs to clean
up the league or will this be the start of
a long downward spiral for professional
football? Only the future will tell.

Girly Golfers Heads Up, Hearts Up, Hopes Up
Size doesn’t dictate success for
girls golf.

Wondering how to get an awesome farmer’s tan on your wrist? By joining girl’s
golf you will easily get this and more in
just a few months! The number of girls
on the golf team has been dropping for
the past few years. For only having a
whopping number of two players this
year, Sarah Carman, a senior, and Kailey
Mael, a sophomore, the team isn’t doing
too badly. “I wish we had more people on
the team but we go out to eat after practice and just have a good time playing,”
Carman, the captain of the team said. So,
even though there aren’t a lot of people
these girls still manage to make the best
of it.
The team has had a pretty good season
so far. This year, both girls have shot
their best scores since they’ve started
playing. Saying this, it’s obvious that the
girls have shown major improvement.
“By the time Kailey is a senior she is going to be really good if she keeps improving at the rate she is,” Carman said about
Kailey, since it is only her second year.
Girl’s golf is a great sport to play, especially if running isn’t your thing. When
I asked why other girls should play
Carman said, “You can eat while you’re
playing, it only goes into October and it’s
a sport you can play for the rest of your
life!” So, if being able to do eyeball measurements by meters is something you’re
interested in, join girl’s golf today!
JV boys soccer kicks up a lot
of hope.

Soccer has been a beloved sport here at
La Follette for many years. The boy’s JV
soccer team is already half way through
their season, and they are ready to show
some serious effort for the rest of their
season.
Despite being a Junior Varsity team, they
are composed of almost half sophomores.
Most team members are new to the sport
so it’s no surprise that they don’t have
the most successful record.
When I asked the teams fearless leader,
Coach Tom Krall to explain how the
season was going he was more than ready
to provide me with insightful information, “With their commitment to getting
better both individually and as a team and
their hard work ethic the future’s looking
bright, especially considering over half
the team are sophomores”, Coach Krall
said. This is Krall’s second time coaching
the JV boys’ team. Just to clarify, he has
no association with La Follette’s math
teacher Mr. Krall, trust me, I’ve asked.
Krall is an accountant by trade and he
is accounting on his team to persevere
through the end of the season.
The team is captained by senior Ismael
Tinajero. A smart and lively young man
that has no trouble holding the team on
his jersey clad shoulders. His leadership
has proven to have a positive effect on the
teams success. The leading goal scorer,
sophomore Gustavo Barreda-Herrera has
shown consistent effort is his ability to
score a goal.
Senior defender Jesus Gomez-Castellanos, who transfered to La Follette is
another star player.
Tom Krall, who graduated from La Follette in 2004, played on the Varsity soccer
for all four of his years here. He is glad to
be back coaching the JV team in the sport
that he loves most.
When I asked senior player Ruben Bon
how he would feel if his team lost the
next game, he replied with “it’s not just a
game.”
To close, Coach Krall continued “expect
a solid finish to the season; I wouldn’t be
surprised if we won the majority if not all
the remaining games this season.”

Is Man Truly A Walrus At Heart?
You will never look at Jake
Long the same way again.

Let’s face it, it’s October again and you
want to cuddle up next to someone and
watch a scary movie. However you don’t
feel like watching another low budget
horror flick that isn’t quite scary enough
to scar you forever. If you’re looking
for a movie that will truly be the stuff of
your nightmares look no further than
your nearest movie theater to catch the
horror/comedy, Tusk. This rated R film
includes major stars Jake Long as Wallace
Bryan, Michael Parks as Howard Howe,
and Johnny Depp makes an appearance as
Guy Lapointe.
The story follows Wallace Bryan who
makes a living creating comical podcasts
with his friend Teddy, (played by Haley
Joel Osment), out of a studio in Los
Angeles. The film starts off with Bryan
traveling to Canada to interview the
creator of a viral video brought up in
one of his earlier podcasts. When this
interview falls through, a desperate
Bryan catches a lucky break when he
finds a letter pinned above a urinal in the
bathroom of a Canadian bar written by
a man named Howard Howe. The letter
says that Howe is an old sailor who has
lived a life of adventure at sea but now
lives alone in a giant mansion, is confined
to a wheelchair, and is looking to rent out
a room for free to anyone that can help
him do household chores he no longer
can. Bran accepts this offer so he can get a
chance to interview Howard Howe about
his many adventures for his podcast and
soon after drives out into the middle of
Canadian nowhere to Howe’s manor.
After the two meet they quickly start
conversing about Howe’s life stories
over a cup of tea. Howe shares a number
of fascinating and humorous stories
and things stay pretty normal. But after
Howe reveals his life was once saved by
a walrus, things get interesting and take
a horrifying turn. The tea had roofies in
it and Bryan passes out. Upon waking
up Bryan finds himself strapped into a
wheelchair in the basement of Howe’s
abode.
The movie only escalates from there and
although the film strays from the main
plot from time to time it earns a 3.5 out
of 5 fish.

All Truth and Nothing but the Truth
Do YOU believe all the
rumors you hear? Well,
rumors aren’t always true.

Remember being a kid and playing the
popular game telephone? The goal of
the game is for the last person in the
circle to say the exact same phrase as the
first person said. The problem with this
is that people twist the phrase around
and make it their own. This is exactly
what happens with rumors in real life.
News travels through the grapevine like
wildfire. The truth gets lost in the mix
along the way, and that’s where the real
trouble starts.
“If we were to have a student in
crisis here at La Follette, which we
did the week of September 14th,
2014 and if we were in the pre-social
media era we wouldn’t have had that
complicating factor,” Principal Chad
Wiese said. Agreeing with Mr. Wiese
I do believe a lot of situations escalate
due to the effect social media has on
our generation. Something that was
supposed to be kept quiet can be known
in a matter of minutes by hundreds, and
even thousands of people by the click of
a button.
We all have taken part in making a tweet
or status that wasn’t our business to tell.
Yes it can be fun to join in the gossip
and add your own personal twist onto it
but imagine how it can affect the people
involved in the incident. This is where
empathy comes in and you really have to
imagine yourself in the victim’s shoes.
A great example is the incident that
happened here at our own school on
Wednesday September 17th, 2014. A
minor altercation between a police
officer and a student that had occurred
turned into a so called stabbing due to
rumors and lack of knowledge on the
actual facts. As a student of LHS I know
it was hard to keep my thoughts on the
situation to myself. Due to the twisted
story students were freaking out and
many felt unsafe in the building. This
could have all been avoided if no one
made up rumors or tried to spread their
side of the story all over social media.
As soon as Mr. Pliner came over the
intercom and told the real story it was
all dropped and forgotten in a matter of
minutes.
If you haven’t realized the main idea
of this story is to keep your mouth
quiet unless you know the truth and
nothing but the truth. I hope we can
move forward and better ourselves
as a student body. As Pliner said in
his announcement, we are a Lancer
community and we can only get better
from here.

The plastic bag holds America’s most
common goods. Anything from new
clothes to Chinese food is carried in
plastic bags for convenient transport.
Our society of consumers loves the
plastic bag, but what are the negatives?
Plastic bags need somewhere to go after
they have been used. Unfortunately the

ocean has involuntarily become their
new home. The effect is monumental. It
is estimated that 46,000 pieces of plastic
bag reside in every square mile of ocean.
Sea turtles mistake those plastic pieces
for jellyfish and attempt to swallow
them, their breathing passages and
digestive system become clogged.
Nearly 85% of sea turtles will be killed
or injured from ingesting plastic debris
floating in the ocean.
Not just sea turtles are affected by
plastic bag pollution over 100 marine
mammals and one million seabirds die
each year from either ingesting plastic
or becoming entangled in plastic litter.
The solution to for preventing further
pollution is simple; reusable bags.
Grocery stores welcome customers that
bring their own bags for shopping. In
fact, over 100 cities nationwide have
placed some sort of ban on the plastic
grocery bag either outlawing them
completely or charging customers to
use them.
The city of Madison now allows plastic
bags to be recycled. The website for the
city of Madison says that citizens are

This time of year, there is a lot of debate
among students whether to trick-ortreat or not. Are high-schoolers too
old to trick-or-treat? Let your fellow
students clear up all the speculation.
As maturing young adults, it can be
argued that trick-or-treating is a juvenile
activity. There are some who may look
down on teenage trick-or-treaters.
Neighbors may be dismayed when they
are handing out candy to almost legal
adults rather than cute little children,
but there are some who may appreciate a
creative and well put together costume.
Teenagers are often referred to as
young adults, which mean a lot more is
expected of them. They are expected to
be in school, be punctual, have longterm goals, be involved in sports and
clubs, have a job, and make decisions
that positively affect their futures.
Basically, a lot of responsibility falls on
young adults.
With this in mind, it is not difficult
to say trick-or-treating in high school
should be a socially acceptable thing to
do. “I haven’t missed a year,” Taylor
Gleason (12) said.
So much is expected of this age group
that Halloween offers an outlet for
teenagers to continue their childhood
experience. When asked if trick-ortreating is socially acceptable, Ashley
Nedanovski (12) responded, “If it’s with
a big group of people, and you’re just
being silly with your friends.”
Often times, teens get the short end
of the stick. Many kids’ menus are
off-limits to anyone over the age of
12. Discounts to amusement parks,
museums, and other recreational
locations are limited to younger age
groups. Regarding crime, teens can
receive more severe sentences by being
charged as adults. In this way, highschoolers receive the burdens without
the privileges of approaching adulthood.
So, if one can pull off a great costume,
why not get free candy as a reward for
all the effort?

We’ve all seen movies like Pirates of
the Caribbean, Peter Pan, and Captain
Philips, and as a result we are all fully
aware of all the awesomeness that
comes along with being a pirate. Some,
however, would argue that pirates are
nothing but a bunch of scallywags. So
is being a pirate a fun hobby, or a nasty
habit? Let’s find out!
Pirates live the good life. They spend
their days sailing the seven seas without
a care in the world. It’s just them and
the open water. Their only priority is
finding treasure, so who really cares
about bathing.
Once they get their hands on the booty,
or “treasure” if you prefer, they’re set
for life and they can settle down and
retire in Bermuda. “The pirate life is the
life for me,” Tony Feller (12) said.
You may try to argue that the pirate life
is dead and gone, however, I’d say you’re
wrong. Steve the Pirate is a perfect
example. This man remained dedicated
to his pirate lifestyle even though
everyone made fun of him. He however,
had the last laugh when he ended up
with a boatload of treasure. (If you’re
in the dark about that last reference

The pirate life seems almost too good
to be true, right? Well, that’s because
it is. The pirate life isn’t as glamorous
as it seems. First things first, pirates
can get some pretty gnarly infections
and diseases. The most notable of these
wicked debilitations is Scurvy, which
causes you to lose your teeth and your
mobility. But just you wait, that’s not
even the most terrifying part; scurvy will
more than likely be the cause of your
eventual death.
Health risks aren’t the only thing that
should freak you out. As a pirate you’re
never able to let your guard down.
You’re always on the lookout for enemy
vessels that are trying to steal your
riches. “I would not want to sail a ship
near Somalia,” Albert Shoshany-Glosser
(10) said.
The most depressing part however is the
fact that you could spend your entire
life searching for a treasure that you
may never find and as a result you could
end up dying poor and alone. Oh yeah,
you could also get swallowed up by the
kraken at any given moment, and just
like that you could be dead.
Being a pirate, fun hobby? Or nasty

Lancers of the Month
Athletes of the Month:
Casey and Hegge Bound for Success
These two athletes
extend the boundaries of what a stellar
athlete and student
should be.

As October rolls in, it brings
two athletes of the month
with it. This month we are
featuring two Lancers that
have excelled both on the field
and in the classroom; Katie
Casey and Tanner Hegge.
Katie Casey started playing
tennis in eighth grade, and
her love for the sport carried
throughout her high school
years. She has been a member
of the varsity tennis team for
the past two years, playing
doubles last year and switching to playing singles this
year. “Tennis is a sport that

involves a lot of etiquette and
mental toughness that I can
apply to my life every day. I
have been so lucky to be a part
of such a fun and supportive
team in high school,” Katie
Casey (12) said.
Casey has also been active
in Key Club, mathletes, pit
orchestra and National Honor
Society during her years here
at La Follette. Throughout
all of her activities Casey has
managed to maintain a stellar
4.0 GPA. She would like to
attend either Northwestern University or Grinnell
College and plans to major in
Biology.
Tanner Hegge started playing football in kindergarten
and went on to play for the
East Side Sharks from fourth
through eighth grade. From
there he continued on to
play for the Lancers as first
a quarterback his freshman
year, and then switched to
wide receiver during his
sophomore year. Hegge has
played wide receiver for the
past two seasons on varsity as
well. “I would like to thank
my coaches and teammates for
pushing me to be my best on
and off the field. Also I would
like to give a special thanks to
Coach Heggs,” Tanner Hegge
(12) said.
Besides football Hegge is a
member of DECA and has
played with the Asian Club’s
Flag Football. He has managed to maintain an impressive 3.8 GPA. Hegge would
like to attend UW-Madison,
UM-Twin Cities or Carlton
College and is still undecided on what he would like to
major in.
We wish both of these Lancers the best luck in the near
future!
Artist of the Month:
Massie Makes Masterful Music
Music is in his bones.

This month, senior Kareem
Massie, is being acknowledged
as an outstanding musician.
Not only is Massie musically
gifted, he is also on the road
to success with a GPA of
3.76, while also taking classes
such as AP Chemistry and
AP Calculus. Kareem was
exposed to music when he
was only five years old, which
is when he first began learning
how to play his drum set.
Also when he was five, he
joined his older sister singing
for his church choir.

Over the years, he has honed
his skills, so much so that in
his wind ensemble class, he is
first chair in the percussion
section. In addition to wind
ensemble, Kareem is involved in early bird jazz, jazz,
marching band, and will be
participating in pit orchestra
for this year’s musical. “It
takes hard work and dedication,” says Massie in reference to engaging in many of
the musical opportunities
available at La Follette.
After all these years, why
does Kareem continue playing? “The feeling of accomplishment I get from learning
a difficult part, and perform-
ing a difficult piece. It brings
me one step closer to being
the greatest musician I can
be. Also, I enjoy meeting
new people as a musician,”
Massie said.
Musical talent runs in the
Massies’ blood. Kareem’s
brothers play bass and piano,
while his sister is passionate about singing. While
predominantly a percussion
player, Kareem has also practiced playing the piano and
guitar. Needless to say, Kareem’s love of music comes
from it being a significant
part of his life and always
being around music.
Regarding his future in music,
The Lance
Kareem says, “As far as
playing in college, yes, I will
definitely continue playing in
college. I don’t know of any
long term goals I have with
music. All I know is that I will
never stop playing.”
