Hosta

As the most popular perennial for the
shade, hostas offer an amazing palette of
colors, sizes, textures, and flowering performance. They are indispensable in the garden
and also look great in large containers or
troughs. All of our hostas are hardy in zones 3-9.
Visit www.WaltersGardens.com for growing infomation.
HOSTA VIRUS TESTING
Walters Gardens, Inc. stands behind its product and guarantees
that all plants are healthy and true-to-name. With hosta, this
means much work in sampling and virus testing to ensure that
customers receive the best quality plants possible. We believe this
extra care is essential to maintain the high level of trust we have
built over so many years.
Our plant health department has known about and has been protecting our customers from Hosta Virus X (HVX) as well as other
viruses in hosta since before it became a prevalent plant health issue. We virus-index all hosta varieties we offer with ELISA testing
and have been proactively working to maintain clean stock. New
varieties are virus indexed as they are brought into production and
are re-indexed on a set schedule. For more information about our
virus-indexing program, see p. 11. To learn more about HVX and
its symptoms, please visit
www.hostalibrary.org/firstlook/HVX.htm or
www.americanhostasociety.org/HostaVirusX.html
GROWING HOSTA IN EARLY SPRING
Please note it is normal for different hosta varieties to re-emerge
at significantly different rates in the spring. Some will virtually
explode from the soil while others are slower to emerge. The speed
of emergence can depend on:
• Growing temperature. Hostas grown in a cool 40-50°F environment can take much longer to emerge than plants grown at
60-70°F.
• Length of vernalization. Many hostas require a full 10 weeks
of cold temperatures (35°F) to grow properly the following
spring. Plants not receiving the necessary cold treatment will
take significantly longer to emerge.
• Cultivar/Species. Generally tokudama and fortunei type hostas
emerge much slower than types with undulata, sieboldiana,
plantaginea, and montana parentage.
GROWER TIP

POPULARITY POLL
PREMIUM HOSTA
What is the AHS Popularity Poll? As a
service to its members and to the general
public, each year the American Hosta
Society (AHS) conducts a popularity poll among
its members to determine their favorite hostas.
The Popularity Poll lets other gardeners know
which hostas have performed best for them over
the years. www.americanhostasociety.org

been selected by hosta experts as the top cultivars are
now denoted as premium varieties using the symbol
