h- Aco Ac Hosta A As the most popular perennial for the shade, hostas offer an amazing palette of colors, sizes, textures, and flowering performance. They are indispensable in the garden and also look great in large containers or troughs. All of our hostas are hardy in zones 3-9. Visit www.WaltersGardens.com for growing infomation. HOSTA VIRUS TESTING Walters Gardens, Inc. stands behind its product and guarantees that all plants are healthy and true-to-name. With hosta, this means much work in sampling and virus testing to ensure that customers receive the best quality plants possible. We believe this extra care is essential to maintain the high level of trust we have built over so many years. Our plant health department has known about and has been protecting our customers from Hosta Virus X (HVX) as well as other viruses in hosta since before it became a prevalent plant health issue. We virus-index all hosta varieties we offer with ELISA testing and have been proactively working to maintain clean stock. New varieties are virus indexed as they are brought into production and are re-indexed on a set schedule. For more information about our virus-indexing program, see p. 11. To learn more about HVX and its symptoms, please visit www.hostalibrary.org/firstlook/HVX.htm or www.americanhostasociety.org/HostaVirusX.html GROWING HOSTA IN EARLY SPRING Please note it is normal for different hosta varieties to re-emerge at significantly different rates in the spring. Some will virtually explode from the soil while others are slower to emerge. The speed of emergence can depend on: • Growing temperature. Hostas grown in a cool 40-50°F environment can take much longer to emerge than plants grown at 60-70°F. • Length of vernalization. Many hostas require a full 10 weeks of cold temperatures (35°F) to grow properly the following spring. Plants not receiving the necessary cold treatment will take significantly longer to emerge. • Cultivar/Species. Generally tokudama and fortunei type hostas emerge much slower than types with undulata, sieboldiana, plantaginea, and montana parentage. GROWER TIP For tips on growing and overwintering 72ct hosta plugs successfully, as well as a list of viruses we test for, visit www.WaltersGardens.com. 125 HOSTA COLOR AND SIZE LISTING H American Hosta Society Sizes Variety Name Size Variety Name ‘Maui Buttercups’ 4-6 inches tall ‘Mayflower Moon’ MN = Mini 7-10 inches tall ‘Prairie Moon’ S = Small M = Medium 11-18 inches tall ‘Sum and Substance’ 19-28 inches tall ‘Sun Power’ L = Large > 28 inches tall G = Giant Key to Symbols PREMIUM VARIETY = Premium Variety (see p. 127) = Proven Winners® Variety Name Size BLUE SHADES ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’ ‘Big Daddy’ ‘Blue Angel’ ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ ‘Blue Umbrellas’ ‘Blueberry Muffin’ ‘Fragrant Blue’ ‘Hadspen Blue’ ‘Halcyon’ ‘Humpback Whale’ ‘Krossa Regal’ ‘Neptune’ PP19674 ‘Prairie Sky’ PP17309 ‘Queen of the Seas’ sieboldiana ‘Elegans’ ‘Silver Bay’ ‘Yankee Blue’ PREMIUM VARIETY PREMIUM VARIETY PREMIUM VARIETY M L G S G M M M M G G L M L L M L CHARTREUSE/ GOLD SHADES ‘August Moon’ ‘Dancing Queen’ ‘Designer Genes’ ‘Fire Island’ ‘Golden Needles’ ‘Key West’ ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ PREMIUM VARIETY PREMIUM VARIETY PREMIUM VARIETY 126 S M M G L Size Variety Name ‘Little Treasure’ PP21210 ‘Loyalist’ ‘Night before Christmas’ ‘Old Glory’ PP12503 ‘Orange Marmalade’ Size S ‘Diamond Tiara’ M ‘Diamonds are Forever’ PPAF M M ‘Earth Angel’ ‘First Frost’ M PP16742 ‘Fortunei Aureomarginata’ GREEN ‘Pandora’s Box’ MN ‘Fragrant Bouquet’ SHADES ‘Paradigm’ L ‘Fragrant Queen’ PP19508 ‘Empress Wu’ PP20774 G ‘Paradise Island’ PP20798 M ‘Francee’ ‘Irish Luck’ M ‘Paul’s Glory’ L ‘Frances Williams’ ‘Komodo Dragon’ G ‘Pocketful of Sunshine’ S ‘Ginko Craig’ PPAF ‘Niagara Falls’ G ‘Golden Tiara’ M plantaginea M ‘Popcorn’ ‘Goodness Gracious’ MN PPAF ‘Rocket’s Red Glare’ M ‘Pure Heart’ ‘Royal Standard’ L ‘Rainbow’s End’ PP17251 M ‘Grand Prize’ S ‘Grand Tiara’ ‘Surfer Girl’ MN ‘Rainforest Sunrise’ ‘Rare Breed’ L ‘Ice Follies’ LIGHT CENTER/ ‘Remember Me’ M ‘Independence’ PP17044 DARK MARGIN ‘Revolution’ M ‘Liberty’ PP12531 (Medio-Variegated) ‘Rhino Hide’ PPAF L ‘Luna Moth’ ‘American Hero’ PPAF M ‘Ripple Effect’ S ‘Mighty Mouse’ ‘Andrew’ L ‘Sparkler’ PPAF MN ‘Minuteman’ ‘Brother Stefan’ L ‘Stained Glass’ M montana ‘Aureomarginata’ ‘Captain Kirk’ L ‘Striptease’ L ‘Northern Exposure’ ‘Cathedral Windows’ L ‘Thunderbolt’ PP14232 M ‘Patriot’ PP17295 M ‘Praying Hands’ ‘Cherry Tomato’ MN ‘Touch of Class’ PP13080 M ‘Regal Splendor’ ‘Dancing Stars’ PP22611 L ‘Undulata Mediopicta’ L ‘Regal Supreme’ PP19818 M ‘Vulcan’ ‘Dream Weaver’ ‘Fireworks’ PP16062 S ‘Rubies and Ruffles’ DARK CENTER/ ‘Gold Standard’ L ‘Sagae’ LIGHT MARGIN ‘Great Expectations’ L (Margin-Variegated) ‘Secret Ambition’ PP19507 ‘Guacamole’ L ‘Afterglow’ PPAF L ‘Seducer’ PP22413 ‘Guardian Angel’ L ‘Alakazaam’ PP22342 MN ‘Totally Awe Sum’ ‘Half and Half’ M ‘Allan P. As a service to its members and to the general public, each year the American Hosta Society (AHS) conducts a popularity poll among its members to determine their favorite hostas. The Popularity Poll lets other gardeners know which hostas have performed best for them over the years. www.americanhostasociety.org H With the launch of the Proven Winners® Perennials program, we have discontinued our Designer Hosta™ Collection. Former Designers and others that have been selected by hosta experts as the top cultivars are now denoted as premium varieties using the symbol shown above.
