World-first technology helping Australia’s most
vulnerable patients
Monash Health has been
chosen as the first health
service in the world to
receive the innovative
new Carestream DRX
2530C small-format digital
radiography detector.
The device allows instantaneous
diagnostic imaging, with very
low radiation dose. The wireless,
compact design means it is easily
used within the neonatal intensive
care unit (NICU) at Monash
Medical Centre.
“Prior to the arrival of the
Carestream device, x-raying
babies within NICU was a time-intensive and
challenging experience,” said Mark Burgess,
Chief Medical Imaging Technologist at Monash
Health.
“Once we had taken the chest x-ray on the sick
baby, we then had to return to the Radiology
Department to process the image, which meant
the doctors waited up to 10 minutes before they
could see the x-ray image.”
“This remarkable device is easier, faster, and
allows x-raying with almost instant results for
critically ill infants. We are thrilled to be the first
health service in the world to offer this technology
from Carestream.”
The device is already in use within NICU after
being delivered in September 2013.
“The nature of the device allows us to x-ray
babies and see the images immediately rather
than waiting for the pictures to develop,” said
Associate Professor Arvind Sehgal, neonatal
physician at Monash Children’s Hosptial.
“This can be crucial when a baby has devices
or tubing to their lungs that require minute
adjustments.”

Health was the first recipient of this product
largely due to its excellent track record of
innovation in diagnostic imaging.
“Monash Health was an ideal candidate for this
technology. As a tertiary health service they have
a need for the full capability of the device, and it
has already proven effective in a clinical setting.”

iNews.

First, we celebrate
This week marks an
important milestone in the
Monash Health calendar as
we take the opportunity to
celebrate the many wonderful
achievements of our staff.
There is an enticing schedule
of events planned for Monash Celebrates and
one which I’m particularly looking forward to is
the annual Staff Arts awards.
Translating clinical-led research into practice is a
critical exercise and one which we are committed
to at Monash Health.
As you are aware we are investing in the Monash
Health Translation Precinct facility which will
provide a dynamic and collaborative environment
for over 400 medical researchers and clinicians
from Monash Health, Prince Henry’s Institute,
the Monash Institute of Medical Research and
Monash University, to bring innovative scientific
discoveries to life in clinical practice.
We’ve had an enthusiastic response to our call
for entries and I’ve been very impressed with the
hidden talents of our staff.
Whilst we anticipate the construction of this new
world-class facility, we continue to lead the way
in translational research in many areas.
Art plays an important role in health because it
has a unique capacity to bring people together to
promote goodwill and a sense of belonging, and
in recent days I’ve definitely noticed an increase
in the number of people stopping to enjoy and
discuss the exhibition.
Of note is our Friedreich ataxia clinic which is
extremely successful at delivering evidencebased care to people with Friedreich ataxia.
Friedreich's ataxia is an autosomal recessive
inherited disease that causes progressive
damage to the nervous system, resulting in
symptoms ranging from gait disturbance to
speech problems. It can also lead to heart
disease and diabetes.
Monash Celebrates is also a time to recognise
our members of staff receiving long service
awards as well as winners of awards through our
Recognition and Rewards program.
Recently I’ve had the pleasure of reading an
article in the American Academy of Neurology
which showcased how Dr Louise Corben, Senior
Clinician, and the team at our Friedreich ataxia
clinic are translating our clinical research into
service delivery in the area of sleep-disordered
breathing.
We place a great emphasis on our iCARE values
and this program provides all staff and volunteers
the opportunity to nominate a colleague for their
contribution to our wonderful organisation.
Awards aside, there are many every day
achievements we can – and should – celebrate
and I encourage you find a reason to enjoy our
Monash Celebrates week with your colleagues.
As a result of this work, the team has been
leading an international group which has written
soon-to-be published clinical management
guidelines for people with Friedreich ataxia.
It is exactly this kind of work which makes a
meaningful difference in our patients’ lives and
this week is the perfect week to celebrate it.
Mental Health Week This week is also Mental Health Week, a
time when we can reflect on the wellbeing of
ourselves and those around us. Monash Health
is supporting Mental Health Week with a number
of events and initiatives for staff and visitors.

Another proud moment
Improvements in healthcare come in many
guises. Sometimes it’s new infrastructure as we
saw last week with the opening of two impressive

New machines help Cystic Fibrosis patients
breathe a little easier
Two new BiPAP devices, used in the
treatment of cystic fibrosis, have
recently arrived at Monash Children’s
Hospital and will help staff better care
for young patients.
The devices cost $5,000 each and were
purchased thanks to the efforts and support
of Friends of the Children Foundation, who
organised the first inaugural Walk for Monash
Children’s Hospital and a ‘Bollywood’ themed
dinner.
Cystic fibrosis is an incurable genetic disease
and it is the most common life-limiting genetic
condition in Australia. It affects the lungs and is a
lifelong illness that must be managed every day
with medication.
The average life expectancy in Australia is just 38
years of age, although this is improving thanks to
research and improved treatment.

The BiPAP device provides positive pressure in
both inspiration and expiration, applied via a face
mask over the nose and mouth. Both pressures
can be adjusted for comfort and to achieve
maximum chest expansion and improve lung
clearance by opening small airways.

six months at PICU, Lucas has become very popular

‘Clean Team’ wins Rosemary Pirie Award
The ‘Rosemary Pirie’ Award was awarded to Monash
Health and accepted, on behalf of their team, by Shannon
Wight, Acting Director Support Services and Julie Ryan,
Quality and Training Manager, for their project “Introduction
of new cleaning methods and credentialing processes for
environmental services and patient services assistants by
establishing new quality assurance parameters and staff
training”. This award was in recognition of the cleaning innovations work
that Support Services, in collaboration with Infection Control,
have implemented across many of the Monash Health clinical
areas.
The award was presented at the Institute of Hospitality in
Healthcare Conference held in Adelaide on 22 August 2013.

Strong winds and wild weather causes damage

repairing the damage
caused by the strong
winds and wild weather
across Victoria last week.
Monash Medical Centre lost
power for 40 minutes around
5am on Tuesday which caused
issues with pressure alternating
mattresses in one ward.
Other sites including Cockatoo,
229 Thomas St and 23 Foster St
also experienced power loss.
A fallen tree caused damaged at Moorabbin Hospital
The water main burst at 314A Thomas St which
cut off the water supply to the building.
Thank you to operational and clinical leadership,
engineering, switchboard and security staff
who worked around the clock to implement
contingency plans which included relocating
staff to other sites where necessary and
working swiftly to repair the damage and restore
operations back to normal whilst keeping our
patients, visitors and work colleagues safe.
At Moorabbin Hospital, a fallen tree damaged the
dialysis unit, whilst at Kingston Centre, fallen tree
branches damaged various parts of the site.

Mental Health Week 6 - 12 October 2013
This week is Mental Health Week and
World Mental Health Day this Thursday
10 October.
Mental Health Week aims to activate,
educate and engage Victorians about
mental health through a week of
interactive events across the state. Events
include an official launch, community
festivals, art exhibitions, music, theatre
and seminars.
From its beginnings in 1985, Mental
Health Week has grown to encompass
hundreds of events and a multitude of
individuals, community groups and service
providers throughout the state.

ACEM Leadership Scholarship
Dr Diana Egerton-Warburton was recently
awarded the ACEM Leadership Scholarship from
the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
The scholarship is intended to provide
opportunities for existing and emerging leaders to
develop strategic leadership skills that will enable
them to contribute to the College’s future and the
future of emergency medicine in Australasia.
Dr Egerton-Warburton is the Director of
Emergency Medicine Research Monash Medical
Centre and Adjunct Senior Lecture at Monash
University
Successful applicants are expected to apply
their knowledge and skills to ongoing advocacy
initiatives and form part of the College’s
Leadership Alumni.
This prestigious scholarship aims to support and
encourage Fellows with demonstrated leadership
ability to engage in professional development
activities that will enhance their leadership
capacity.
Congratulations to Dr Egerton-Warburton on this
achievement.

Empowering change through film
The role of a Health Promotion
Practitioner often involves working
with sensitive but vital health
matters within the community.
With the strong support of The RE Ross Trust,
Monash Health was able to engage the services
of documentary film maker Rochelle Humphrey,
who collaborated with Faduma last year to
develop the film's synopsis.
For Monash Health Community Health
Team Leader Trish Plompen, Community
Worker Faduma Salah Musse and freelance
documentary film maker Rochelle Humphrey, the
complex issue of female genital mutilation (FGM)
has been brought to light in a new 15 minute film
entitled Empowering Change.
Rochelle, who holds a Masters degree in
International Relations, studied the issue of
FGM whilst specialising in Human Rights and
International Law. Rochelle says, "I want to
capture the essence of strength in women who
choose to stand up and challenge a cultural
practice whilst respecting and conveying the
importance of culture. The standpoint had to
come from women who have experiences with
FGM and for it to be a cultural challenge that
came from within, being careful not to make a
film that was arrogant and judgemental."
Hailing from Somaliland, Faduma Salah Musse
wears many hats in her local community
in Melbourne's south east. As Community
Development Worker and Family and
Reproductive Rights Education Program
(FARREP) Worker at Monash Health's
Dandenong Community Health Service, Faduma
actively engages in providing education to
prevent the occurrence of FGM, a shocking
practice that still occurs in some countries within
Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia.
Material for the film was developed based on a
series of workshops with the women in the film.
This workshop unearthed the most important
issues for discussion. Together they have used
an aesthetically beautiful film making approach to
raise awareness and start a dialogue about FGM
prevention, thereby tackling a difficult health
issue for many women in our community.
In a new health promotion film entitled
Empowering Change, Faduma shares her own
personal story and talks about her efforts to end
this centuries’ old custom. Her determination
is also strongly supported by the testimonies
of other African women about the damaging
physical and emotional effects that this practice
brings with it and highlights their commitment to
future generations to be free from FGM.
Rochelle says, “I found the women who shared
their opinions and ideas to be inspiring, powerful
and strong. I am very honoured and pleased
to be part of this film which is about such an
important health issue that needs to be better
understood."
Empowering Change will be launched on
Tuesday 15 October 2013 at 10.30 – 11.30am
at Lecture Theatre 1, Monash Medical
Centre Clayton. Refer to page 11 for more

Community Health Team Leader Trish Plompen
says FARREP workers have been providing
education sessions with mainstream health
workers for many years and the most powerful
part of the training is hearing first-hand the
experiences and life journeys that FARREP
workers have endured as refugees from
countries where FGM is practised. Trish says that
all the women involved in the development of this
film were very excited to be part of the project
and were willing to share their experiences so
that others could learn from it.

Reporting Notifiable Incidents
What happens if someone is
injured, or wishes to report a
hazard within the public area of
our facilities, in our carparks or
grounds?
The first point of contact where this incident
is reported or has occurred is responsible for
submitting a RiskMan report on behalf of the
injured person. If the incident is serious, the
Nursing Coordinator or OHS Consultant for that
site should also be contacted in case the incident
requires a report to WorkSafe.
The Monash Health employee must offer to
assist the client to the Emergency Department
(or otherwise ensure that medical assistance is
accessible to the injured person if the particular
site does not have an Emergency Department)
and report the incident in RiskMan.
The person submitting a RiskMan report may
need to ‘add managers’ to make sure the
appropriate people are notified of the incident.
The site manager, OHS consultant, client liaison
officer or engineering manager may be among
the most appropriate people to alert to the
incident.
If required, the Nursing Coordinator may be
contacted for help in gaining assistance for the
client. When reporting the incident in RiskMan,
include the client’s name, contact details and
as much information as possible about exactly
where and how the incident happened. This
enables the required follow-up to assist the client
and to rectify the hazard.
For example, a client is on a Monash Health
site to attend an outpatient appointment. Upon
reaching the intended destination, the client tells
a Monash Health employee (eg receptionist,
treatment provider or nurse) that they had fallen
in the car park and that part of their body is very
sore (eg ankle, knee, shoulder or other body
part).

additional information on what constitutes a
Notifiable Incident and guidance on how to
proceed.

Please note that as part of the Windows
7 and PC upgrade project, there will be
contractors conducting audits across all
Monash Health sites over the next four
weeks. The contractors will barcode scan
each Desktop PC Asset ID and map its
physical location.

Brand new domain name
An important step in the process of corporate rebranding to Monash
Health is to migrate our domain name and email addresses to
@monashhealth.org. IT Services is responsible for full implementation
of the new domain name and aims to complete this over the coming
weeks. They aim to make this transition as seamless as possible.
Microsoft Outlook
Once the transition is complete, staff emails will be sent using the new
[email protected] address. Staff may have noticed that
we have been able to receive emails on our new name [email protected] but that emails are still being sent using
the [email protected].
Rosters, Kronos and other HR related systems will be progressively moved across to the new domain
name over the coming weeks. Our remote access system Citrix and other externally facing systems
and major applications will also be moved to the new domain by early November.

Improving car parking
at Clayton
Work will soon begin on the Northern
Multi-Deck Car Park which will improve
car parking facilities for staff at Monash
Medical Centre Clayton.
Construction works will include a
900-space multi-deck car park and
improvements to the current parking area.

Preliminary works will begin in October and
it is anticipated that the car park will be
completed by June 2014.

Monash Medical Centre lift refurbishments
Following the successful
refurbishment of lifts 1.1, 1.2
and 2.1 works will commence
on lift 5.1 on 15 October 2013.
Work on this lift is expected to
be completed by 10 December
2013.
The two other lifts in this bank
will remain available for regular
use. However during patient
meal delivery times (11.45am
– 1.30pm) there will only be
one lift available for patient
and visitor use. Staff are
encouraged to use the stairs
during this time.

Open Discussion Skills Training

Vigilant Team Approach Learning Session (VITALS)
Using a case-based, interactive format, this program provides medical, nursing,
midwifery and allied health staff an opportunity to discuss the challenges associated
with managing sick patients on the ward and provides them with a shared template for
patient care. The program has been developed in consultation with senior medical,
nursing and allied health staff within Monash Health and has been endorsed by
Executive Management. All staff are invited to come and participate in this innovative

“What to do and say when things go wrong”
Communicating errors in healthcare is an important and challenging aspect of caring
for patients and their families. This workshop has been developed in response to the
need to support junior clinicians in managing these difficult situations. It aims to improve
participants’ knowledge of open disclosure and will provide skills in discussing low
harm incidents. It was developed with input from a patient advocacy group. All medical,
nursing and allied health staff are welcome to attend.

Reel Health - One Step at a Time
One Step at a Time portrays a day in the life of Jane, a counsellor/advocate, as she
works with women attending a sexual assault centre and juggles her home life. The
stories for this half hour drama are drawn from interviews with clients and counsellors
from the South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA).
