Highlights
One seldom looks forward to long-haul flights, but
they’re also an opportunity to turn off every electronic

Robin Williams sad passing earlier this year on August
11th, was followed by numerous tributes from comedic
luminaries including Ellen de Generes and Billy Crystal.
Williams rose to fame as a member of the Mork & Mindy
cast and went on to win numerous awards including
Golden Globes, Grammy awards and an Oscar for a
best supporting role in Good Will Hunting. In the 1993
Chris Columbus film, Williams plays an out of work voice
actor who takes on the persona of a British nanny, Mrs.
Euphegenia Doubtfire. With his marriage on the rocks
and the prospect of losing custody of his three kids,
Williams’ character dreams up a plan to pose as a
housekeeper when his wife decides that their kids are in
need of some discipline.
Based on the 1963 Pierre Boulle novel, Planet of the
Apes has proved one of the most enduring franchises
achieving success of the big and small screens. The
first film hit theatres in 1968 and was followed in rapid
succession by three more offerings in the earl 70s. The
latest iteration Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has Matt
Reevs at the helm and stars Andy Sekis, Gary Oldman
and Keri Russell. This prequel has a small group of apes
encountering a band of humans – the last remaining
members after the species after a virus has ravaged the
planet. The ‘clash of cultures’ forms the epicenter of the
plot and the question at hand is whether or not the two
life-forms can co-exist or whether they will be locked in
an apocalyptic battle.

Transformers 4: Age of Extinction
Josh Green’s novel The Fault in Our Stars comes to the
screen courtesy of director Josh Boone. A sassy teenager
(Shailene Woodley) is diagnosed with cancer. In an
attempt to help her cope, her mother requests that she
join a support group. She meets a boy (Ansel Elgort) who
has lost a leg as a result of cancer. As their friendship
develops, they agree to read one another’s favourite
novels. The girl’s favourite novel has an abrupt conclusion
and the writer has moved to Switzerland where he lives
in quiet seclusion. Elgort’s character mounts a plan for
the duo to track him down in the hope that he will reveal
a more definitive resolution to the novel.
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were originally scheduled
to star in Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain. The studio,
Warner Bros, shut down the production but Aronofsky
was able to get things back on track following a re-write
and getting Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz on board.
The film contains three separate stories occurring in
different centuries and all featuring Jackman and Weisz.
Aronofsky wanted to deal with the death of a young
person still in the bloom of their early adulthood. While
the stories are non-linear, the overwhelming essence of
tale deals with preparing for one’s own demise.
Glee actor Cheyenne Jackson recently married
his partner Jason Landau. In attendance at their
wedding were Jane Lynch, Jesse Tyler Ferguson
and Leah Remini. First broadcast in 2009, the
series proved wildly successful in its televisual
incarnation, at the big-screen box office and in
terms of ancillary income including album sales.
Nominated for numerous awards, the show won
Golden Globe award for Best Television Series in
2011. Ryan Murphy, one of the show’s creators,
is responsible for the choice of songs covered –
episodes have featured music by Madonna and
Christmas songs.

DAWN OF THE PLANET
OF THE APES
Comedy – 96 min
Melissa McCarthy has proven her star-power in several stand-out roles. Many
would argue that she stole the show as a police detective opposite Sandra
Bullock in The Heat and there were several scene-stealing moments in Paul
Feig’s Bridesmaids. Not everyone can do physical comedy and accolades
for McCarthy’s performance have taken this element into consideration.
But taking on the lead role in a movie is a very different in that the audience’s
attention is squarely focused in your direction. McCarthy co-wrote and
produced her first marquee role with her husband Ben Falcone who also
makes his directorial debut.
Tammy (with McCarthy in the titular role) is an impetuous, loud and often
despairing woman stuck in a dead-end job and a marriage that she’s finding
almost impossible to keep together. We meet her when she hits a deer and
as a result is (once again) late for work. Her assistant manager (Falcone)
duly fires her; then things go from bad to worse when she returns home to
find her hubby in a romantic entanglement with their next-door neighbor.
Tammy can’t take any more, and though she’s threatened to leave many
times in the past, she gets in her car and drives out of town.
However, she’s not alone. Her grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon) is
eager to join the road-trip – the fact that she owns an old Cadillac and has a
wad of cash, convince Tammy to allow her to tag along. There are abundant
prospects for the two, Pearl has the hots for an aging barfly, there’s a fastfood robbery and they attend a party at the home of a well-to-do lesbian, but
the trip is there one real chance to peel back the layers of their respective
lives, taking a long, hard look at just why they find themselves in in such
ill-starred circumstances.
Cathy Bates, Gary Cole and a woefully underutilized Toni Collette all make
appearances, testimony to the fact that McCarthy is a bonafide star. While
while the film isn’t quite in the same league as Thelma and Louise (Sarandon
again as you’ll recall) or the raunchy aforementioned Bridesmaids, it has
much to offer in the way of belly-laughs and touching moments.

“I started DJ-ing at
friends’ birthday
parties when I
was 13 years old.”
DJ Euphonik
Themba Nkosi aka DJ Euphonik, is one
of South Africa’s most successful young
turntable talents. Having established
himself on the club scene and working with
5FM drive-time host DJ Fresh, he is also
one of the “must listen to” presenters on
the airwaves.
Airscape: How did you get into DJing and where did you get
your start?
Euphonik: One needs to learn certain skills before entering
the club environment. I started DJing at friend’s
birthday parties when I was 13 years old. I started
watching other DJs I looked up to and looked at
what they did. I would do my research about it
and try and find out as much as possible. After
getting a residency at a club in Midrand, I would
introduce myself to DJs and network as much
as I could – I then started doing mixes on YFM
and in 2006 got my own show on 5FM.
Airscape: What are some of the best gigs you’ve played?
Euphonik: The best gig I ever played at was Ultra Fest
South Africa. Other great gigs are H20 and
Spring Fiesta which I played at every year.

Airscape: Who are the local and international DJs you
admire and why?
Euphonik: Avicii for his innovation and marketing genius;
Tiesto for his consistency; and Swedish House
Mafia for their overall talent.
Airscape: Becoming a fixture on 5fm has provided you with
a national platform. How have you adapted to
being a radio DJ?
Euphonik: I didn’t have to adapt much, I just do what I
do in clubs - it’s just to a larger audience now.
It is great having such a huge platform, I get
to play music I love to people who love it too.
The difference between radio and a club is that
I don’t have to worry about whether the radio
audience is dancing or not.
Airscape: You’ve achieved so many of your ambitions.
What’s next in your professional evolution?
Euphonik: I would like to help other people in the same
industry to achieve their goals and I would also
like to take my career globally.
