When you walk into the intimate setting of a Woodland Concert, you
When you walk into the intimate setting of a Woodland Concert, you can feel that
something exciting is just about to happen. A polite cacophony of noise wafts through
the venue as musicians and vocalists freely rehearse difficult phrases, warm up
fingers, and fine-tune their instruments. The lights dim, you take your seat, everyday
stresses and obligations disappear as you nestle deeply into your chair. An enormous
sound fills the whole room and you can't help but be swept up in it…This is where
you need to be, at our Spring Surprise Concert. Come to Woodlands and be surprised,
delighted, and moved. Saturday May 18 at 7:30pm and Sunday May 19 at
1:30pm.Tickets are $5.00 at the door. Read on for more details from our conductors…
The Orchestra has been working on a variety of styles, from Marches to Rags, Sea Shanties to Classical Music for
this upcoming concert: “Sea Songs” is an arrangement of three British sea-songs by composer Ralph Vaughn
Williams. It is based on the songs “Princess Royal,” “Admiral Benboe”, and “Portsmouth”. The first performance
was given in 1924 During the British Empire’s Exibition. “Symphony #94” (Haydn’s Surprise Symphony) was
written in 1791 in London for a concert series. Haydns’ music contains many jokes, and the Surprise Symphony
includes probably the most famous of all: a sudden fortissimo (very loud) chord at the end of an otherwise piano
(soft) opening theme. “España” is the most famous of orchestral compositions written by French composer
Emmanuel Chabrier, (1841-1894). Written in 1883 after traveling in Spain (from July to December), this work was
inspired and influenced by the many forms of dance and music Chabrier heard traveling many regions in
Spain. “Ragtime” is a musical based on the 1975 novel “Ragtime” by E.L.Doctorow. Ragtime tells the story of
three groups of people in the early 20th century: African Americans, Upper Class Suburbanites, and Eastern Europe
Immigrants. In the piece you will hear marches, cakewalks, gospel, and of course Ragtime. “American Patrol”
written by Frank White Meacham in 1885. This popular march was originally written for piano. It was arranged for
band in 1891. Glen Miller played an arrangement by Jerry Gray years later. Morton Gould also made an
arrangement for this popular march. Quite a few surprises here - you won’t be disappointed. It has been a fun
experience to get the chance to direct this fine group of dedicated musicians. Gary Killings
The Choir will be performing three works from modern composer Eric Whitacre: Sleep, Alleluia, and Five Hebrew
Love Songs. If you’ve not heard of Eric Whitacre yet don’t feel alone. My first exposure to the composer Eric
Whitacre (1970- ) was listening, on public radio, to the story of how “Sleep” came into existence. In the winter of
1999 Ms. Julia Armstrong, mezzo-soprano from Austin, Texas commissioned a work for the Austin Pro Chorus. She
wanted the poetry to be from her parent’s favorite poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy evening,” by Robert
Frost. Unfortunately the Robert Frost estate would not release the copyright so the completed composition would
languish until the poem becomes public domain in 2038. Eric asked Charles Anthony Silvestri to set new words to
the music and “Sleep” came into being, copyrighted 2002. While at Julliard, Eric teamed up with Friedemann
Eichhorn, a violinist and Hila Plitmann, a soprano, to present a concert in Speyer, Germany in 1996. He asked Hila
to write him a few postcards in her native Hebrew, and the Five Hebrew Love Songs were born. Each of the songs
captures a moment that he and Hila had shared. She is now his wife. For most of his career Mr. Whitacre has
resisted setting texts that could be used in a liturgical context. He spent the 2010 Michaelmas term at Sidney Sussex
College, Cambridge where he came to terms with the poetry and power of liturgy. He took a single word “Alleluia”
and reworked “October,” originally written for wind symphony, and a cappella piece emerged. Eric Whitacre has
become one of the leading voices in contemporary choral composition, is regularly performed throughout the world,
and I am sure you will be as delighted as we are with his work. Ron Bacon

Friends of Woodlands Drive 2013
Great things have been made possible with the help of the Friends of Woodlands.
The donations from our friends help keep our theatre building beautiful and
safe! In 2012 the Friends of Woodlands donations went toward several building
improvement projects. We created safer stairways and handicap entrances, fire
safety exits and extinguishers, and repaired all of our seat cushions so you, our
patrons will be more comfortable. This seat repair is being made possible through
the cooperation of the Friends of Woodlands and our “Pick Your Seat” campaign
(Chairs are still available through our Pick Your Seat fund raising campaign.
Information in this newsletter.) New lights, repair of the stage, and our parking
area are all on the agenda for this year too.
