In the 1800s women’s clothing actually restricted
them from taking an active part in society. By
the 1920s, both women’s clothing-and societywas much looser. Learn how changes in women's
fashion reflected women’s changing roles in society
as they joined the workforce, participated in sports,
even frequented speakeasies.

Mother
If I could give you diamonds
for each tear you cried for me.
If I could give you sapphires
for each truth you’ve helped me see.
If I could give you rubies
for the heartache that you’ve known.
If I could give you pearls for the
wisdom that you’ve shown.
Then you’d have a treasure, mother,
that would mount up to the skies.
That would almost match
the sparkle in your kind and loving
eyes.
But I have no pearls, no diamonds,
as I’m sure you’re well aware.
So I’ll give you gifts more precious
my devotion, love and care.

This is Memorial Day
This is Memorial Day
In our land of the free.
It’s because of those who sacrificed
Whose graves you’re here to see.
They fought on foreign lands
And across the open sea,
And paid the ultimate price
To keep you and I free.
So put all things aside
And honor this important day,
Which we have dedicated
As our Memorial Day.

A house-sitting couple gets more than they
bargain for when a Minnesota homeowner
unintentionally double-books her domicile
at Housesitters.com. Generations collide
between the upper-middle-class sociallyskilled Julians, and the free-spirited vegans
who have decided they don't need a last
name. Personalities clash further with
some overly-friendly neighbors, a trio of
home improvement sisters, and a cat...
that no one seems able to find.

Friendship
Circle ‘06
By Terry Iams, Circle President
Spring is in the air. It’s the perfect time to pick a
good book and go sit on a bench outside to bask
in the warmth of the sun and enjoy some quiet
time immersed in the words set before you.
Perhaps you’ve read all the books you have and
would like to enjoy something new. If that’s the
case then this newest Friendship Circle project
could be perfect for you.
I was in the Health Center one day a few months
back and I stopped in to visit Caryl VanHyfte, one
of our King’s Daughters. I noticed she was bedridden at the time and watching a movie. She
mentioned she gets tired of the same old movies
and I told her I had several she might be interested in. I brought in a variety of movies and she
picked a few religious ones to watch. She enjoyed
them so much she asked if I had anymore like
them. I eventually ran out of my stock of religious
movies so I borrowed some from our church’s
library. That was when it struck me. Why not start
a religious library section here at Friendship
Manor where our entire existence was founded on
religion? It was so fitting! So I talked to Ted, who
embraced the idea, but said since it is the
residents’ library I should first ask their permission. I talked to Pat Vogel, Chair of the Library
Committee, and she set aside some space for the
project. Now all I needed were materials to fill
the shelves.
That’s where my project comes in.
I am asking residents and staff alike to contribute
any religious library materials, be it books, cassettes, CDs, VHS movies, or DVDs. You can drop
them off at the Concierge or leave them in my
office so I can mark them prior to putting them
out. My office is located on the first floor just
down the hall from the Concierge and next to the
double doors of maintenance. My door is always
open when I am here and there is a clear file holder just outside my door for items you may want to
leave on the weekends. Please realize that once
you donate the item it becomes the property of the
Friendship Manor Library and will not be returned
to you. It is another way we can all do our part in
helping to spread peace and joy to others through
God’s word. Think of how happy you could make
someone by donating an item you are no longer
watching, listening to or reading. It is that simple.
You say you don't have any items of this nature
but would still like to contribute? We are also
accepting monetary donations, which will be
added to the amount Friendship Circle donates
to buy new materials for this project. You can
drop a check or cash off at the Concierge, but
please specify that it is to go to the Religious
Library Fund. Checks may be made payable to
Friendship Circle. Always remember:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful
for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, so that the man of God may be
thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2
Timothy 3:16–17)

$250,000 into the Birdies for Charity pot to make
sure that this year’s bonus is destined to be on
the high side of the range, coupled with Zach’s
popular return for a back to back string of his
own. Again, you’d have to say this is a pretty
special script that almost makes “Tin Cup”
seem boring! (Great movie, by the way.)

Did you see the Masters Golf Tournament last
month?
But what would make it all perfect, would be for
the Manor to be able to announce that we raised
$100,000 through the 2013 Birdies for Charity
Campaign to build a new Memory Courtyard on
the west side of B Building as the first step in
creating a dedicated Memory Unit for Assisted
Living Residents, which until built the Courtyard
could be enjoyed by all Friendship Manor residents.
Wow, what a mix of emotion! Starting with the
fourteen year old, Chinese, eighth grader who
was in the tournament, made the cut, and was
the subject of a most unusual “slow-play” penalty.
Each facet by itself is amazing, but all put together
it’s an absolutely incredible story.
Then there was the now infamous “Tiger Drop
Fiasco” over his incorrect drop after hitting into
the water, which prior to a new and mis-guided
rule, would have (and yes, I say should have)
resulted in his disqualification. That guy sure
does know how to create news, doesn’t he?
While we can’t control the birdies, the weather,
or the outcome of the tourney we can each do
our generous share to make our Memory
Courtyard a reality and an enjoyable future
securing amenity. So please, to all readers of
this newsletter and fellow lovers of Friendship
Manor, let’s make this the JDC to remember for
us, just like the Masters was this year to the
whole world! What do you say?
Then the tournament concluded with a massive
attempt by the field to “not win the tournament”
followed by a last minute surge by two players to
“win the tournament,” eventually concluding with
an exciting playoff win by the first Australian to
ever win the Masters. Yes, with Tiger’s old caddy
on the bag!
Just Jeffin, Aka Jeff Condit CFP®, Development
Director of Friendship Manor
Folks…you simply can write a script that good.
Indeed, “The Masters – A Tradition like no other!”
But let’s not lose heart, our own John Deere
Classic has been a great story line the last few
years in its own right. First it was Steve Stricker
shooting for a record four tourney wins in a row
and coming up just short last year, with area
favorite Zach Johnson winning his first JDC in a
spectacular playoff. Then there was last year’s
phenomenal record support of local charities
with $6.7 million donated to strengthen our
community through Birdies for Charity. Then
this year, Deere & Company’s early announcement
that they will pitch in

“Resident Strategic
Reporting & Planning
Session”
We’re inviting all residents, who wish to be
part of a long range planning meeting to
attend.
Not to discuss a torn screen or the crispness
of the vegetables, but rather to look at longterm, critical issues like heating and cooling,
parking, garages, mission, future viability and
sustainability, walkway amenities, etc.
This will not be a come and gripe meeting,
but rather a come and think exercise.
We’re on the homestretch of our current
three-year strategic plan and campaign,
“Pride of Friendship 2013.” We now
need to be planning our celebration of our
campaign, while looking forward to the next
strategic plan.
We realize not every resident is interested in
this type of meeting, but for those who are,
we welcome your best participation.
Mark your calendars now, so you’ll be sure to
attend.

Mind Your Ps and Qs
May is filled with holidays and social gettogethers. Lucky for us, May is also the
perfect month to review some basic
rules of etiquette and manners. While
Etiquette Week is May 13–17, we should
be careful to act with courtesy and kindness all month long.
Certain rules of etiquette are timeless.
These tips should be followed at all
times and under all circumstances. For
example, we should always say “please”
and “thank you.” Men should remove
their hats indoors, unless they are in
public spaces such as a post office or
an airport (hats should be removed in
schools, libraries, and courthouses),
or at an indoor sporting event. Both
men and women should graciously
hold the door for others. Always be on
time. Do not groom yourself or chew
gum in public. Keep conversations
pleasant by avoiding topics such as
money, politics, or religion. And always
turn off the ringer of your cell phone
when in a public space
Technology is everywhere these days
and it, too, requires etiquette. When it
comes to email, always respond (unless
it is junk mail), and be sure to reread
messages before sending to make sure
the content is appropriate and spelling
and grammar are correct. Cell phones
pose many etiquette challenges. Taking
a call tells the person you are with that
the call is more important. When you
do take calls, speak softly and do not
discuss personal problems in public
places. Never take or make calls in a
restaurant, library, theater, or church,
and never drive and phone at the same
time. Text messaging is a very casual
and informal means of communication.
Do not send important messages via
text. Do not text impulsively or if you
are under stress. You may regret the
message you sent. Paper messages are
still the best way to show your thanks.
Thank-you notes for gifts are a must.
There is nothing nicer than receiving
a thank-you note via post. Etiquette is
the glue that keeps society civil. Showing
mutual respect is a trend that will never
go out of style.
Honoring Heroes
May 4 is International Firefighters’ Day. This day for honoring our local heroes
came about thanks to firefighter JJ Edmondson, who wished to honor five firefighters who died fighting a wildfire in Australia in 1998. May 4 is the feast
day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. Florian himself is thought
to have been the commander of a battalion of firefighters in ancient Rome.
Legend states that he was able to save an entire village from fire with the use
of only one bucket of water.
The symbol of International Firefighters’ Day is an entwined red and blue
ribbon. The red symbolizes fire and the blue symbolizes water. Wearing this
ribbon shows our support and appreciation for firefighters everywhere who
risk their lives to protect us.
26
Living in Color
The color purple embodies many
peaceful things: the sky at dusk and
violet flowers. Hopefully on May 16 we
will see a lot of purple, for May 16 is
Wear Purple for Peace Day.
The color purple is not just peaceful,
but according to color theorists it also
embodies mystery and magic.
It is a combination of the colors red and
blue, the warmest and coolest colors
respectively, which is why some believe
purple is the perfect color. Maybe this is
why it is often the favorite color of young
children. Purple also is the color of
good judgment and spiritual fulfillment.
Our children may be wiser than we give
them credit for.
Different colors can affect our
thoughts and feelings. The color red
symbolizes warmth and vitality, but
due to its fiery nature, it is also a
warning sign. We don’t want to get
burned. In China, red is the color of
prosperity. Brides wear red and doors
are colored red. Red, though, is also
the color of Mars, the Roman god of
war.
Blue, the coolest and calmest color,
is the same color of the sky and the
ocean. The Egyptians used blue to
represent heaven. Blue is also the
color of spirituality, truth, and good
health.
Yellow is the color of sunshine, which
is cheerful and energetic. Green, the
color of nature, embodies growth,
harmony, and well being. Brown is
the color of the earth and shows
stability, conventionality, and order.
Orange stimulates creativity, enthusiasm, and endurance. White is the
color of purity and kindness. Black is
not a color at all but the absence of
color. Often misunderstood, black is
considered bad or evil. Rather, it
embodies unknown possibilities.
Several
ancient
cultures
practiced
chromotherapy,
or using color
to heal.
You may choose to wear purple for
peace on May 16. What you wear on
other days may also have meaning. It
may be time to look into your closet and
see what your colors reveal.
Stand Tall
Whether it is in front of a computer or television or at a desk leaning over paperwork, many people sit, on average, 56 hours a week. This prolonged sitting leads
to poor posture, which leads to all sorts of health problems. But have no fear, for
May is Correct Posture Month.
Good posture doesn’t mean having a back as straight as a board. Rather, it involves
a “neutral” spine that retains its three natural curves. When standing in this manner,
the ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles are aligned. Want to keep your posture
in check while sitting? Tie one end of a string to the top button of your shirt and the
other end to your belt buckle. Keep the string taut. When it goes slack, that means
you’re slouching. Good posture prevents back and neck pain, increases concentration, facilitates blood circulation, and actually prevents shrinking in old age. Not to
mention, standing tall makes you look good, too.
Correct posture
helps increase
the ability
to breathe
and
allows muscles
to work at
optimum
capacity. 27

ings C & D will be able to come directly to the

The Pastor’s Pen
by Pastor Erv Smith,
Minister of Pastoral Care
May 2013
Residents on the 1st and 2nd floor of B building will
go up the middle elevator to the 3rd floor and turn
right when they exit the elevator. B-320 will be on
the left. Residents on the 1st or 2nd floor of A building will have to commute to B-320 by an elevator
either in A or B building. Residents on 3rd floor of
A building will be able to proceed to B-320 without taking an elevator.
The Pastoral Care Office at Friendship Manor is
now located on the 3rd floor of B building at B-320.
This move was necessary because the previous
office is now occupied by Barb Kratt, who recently
joined the team in the Marketing department.
The Bible study that occurs on Mondays in the
Chapel at 3:00 p.m. will now be held in the new
office at B-320. Currently we are studying the Book
of Revelation. The prayer meeting that occurs in
the Chapel on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. will now
be held in the new office B-320. The meeting times
of both of these events may change in the future.
B-320 is an efficiency apartment that has been
converted into an office and meeting room.
My desk is at the far end from the front door and
is separated by a movable partition. The living room
contains a couple of wing-backed chair/table
combinations and a conference table that will seat
up to 10 people. The walls hangings and décor
promote a comfortable setting for a spiritual
retreat. It is also convenient to have a bathroom
and kitchenette.
The new office at B-320 will be a gathering place
for any new Pastoral Care Events that will be taking
place in the future. It will also be a comfortable
place to gather for conversation and will be open
to everyone.
No, I am not moving in! I am, however, inviting
everyone to stop by for a visit and see this wonderful addition to our Pastoral Care Department.
B-320 will also be available for our residents to
meet with their pastors from their own congregations. I will be contacting the pastors of all
residents to inform them of this new opportunity
for them to engage their parishioners who reside
at Friendship Manor.
You may be thinking, WOW! Why does Pastor Erv
get an office like that? To that I can only say:
“GOD IS GOOD” and so is the leadership at Friendship Manor. The reality is that this apartment/office
will be utilized in many ways that will benefit the
spiritual lives of many at Friendship Manor.
The new office will be a great benefit to everyone.
Please plan to stop by and see what God and
Friendship Manor have provided.
The location of the new office will be more centrally
located to buildings A, B, C, & D. Previously the
Pastoral Care office was located across from the
Bistro restaurant in the Marketing office wing. Now
the office will be just past the elevator on the 3rd
floor of B building. There will be signs posted in
strategic places providing direction to the new
location.
Happy May Day everyone!
Pastor Erv Smith
Residents coming across the walkway from build29
May is the fifth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. In the northern
hemisphere, it is often the bridge between the end of spring and the beginning of
summer. While the Roman poet Ovid believed May got its name from the Latin word
maiores, meaning “elders,” it has also been said May was named for the Greek goddess
Maia, whose festival was held in May.
Birthstone – Emerald May’s gemstone is the
emerald. Ranging in color
from brilliant lime hues to
deep forest greens, the
emerald has long been
considered a symbol of
hope and faith, especially
in the Christian religion.
The word emerald comes from the Greek word
smaragdos, meaning “green.” Since green
symbolizes springtime, emeralds are often
referred to as the “gems of eternal spring.”
Emeralds are known for their extraordinary color.
In fact, emeralds are so intensely green that the
Hebrews believed a snake or serpent would go
blind if it looked at an emerald.
Emeralds are said to enhance the love between
two people and bring lovers closer together.
Maybe it’s because of the intensity of the green
hues, or maybe it’s because it is the stone of the
Roman goddess of love, Venus. Whatever the
reason, emeralds are and will always be a symbol
of everlasting love.
Flower of the Month – Lily of the Valley The lily of the valley is a popular gardening flower
with a heady perfume and white, bellshaped
blossoms. Though the plant is highly poisonous,
its beauty has made it a favorite for centuries. Its
flowers are typically white or pink, and the plant
also produces little red berries.
Part of its scientific name, majalis, is Latin for “of
or belonging to May.” No one knows exactly why
this flower has come to be associated with the fifth
month of the year. An ancient legend, however,
tells a story of a lily of the valley that was fond of a
nightingale. The nightingale left the woods one day
and did not return until May, when the lily of the
valley was in bloom.
In the Victorian era, lilies of the valley were very
symbolic, representing a return to happiness or
a pure heart. The flower is also said to protect
gardens and guard
them against the
trespassing of
evil spirits.
May Thought
“The world’s favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.” ~ Edwin Way Teale (1899–1980)

Thank You!
To Lori Bader
Lori, I would like to thank the staff at Friendship
Manor for making the last four years of my
Mother’s life a JOY! She told me time and time
again that she was in the right place and that
everyone was so nice to her and a big thanks to
her caregivers who assisited her the last year of
her stay when she was so sick, and notably nurse
Mary who stayed with us late her last night until
the very end.
You’re the best!

Thank you residents for making my birthday celebration such a happy occasion. Your individual
style of saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” was so unique.
And to Nancy, Donnie and staff, you were so kind
in everything to make it all happen in an orderly
fashion. Living here at “FRIENDSHIP MANOR” says
it all.

Thank you Nancy and staff for the colorful
balloon bouquet delivered to my door on my
March Birthday. Thanks also for the Hy-Vee gift
card at the March Birthday Party. I appreciated all
who remembered me with cards, phone calls and
personal greetings of various kinds. Those who
sang “Happy Birthday” at dinner in the evening
made a great finish to a fun-packed day.
