American Legion Post 180 Committee and Meeting Notes Chaplain. Bill Murphy, dual member, has moved to an assisted living facility and is getting around much better. Legionnaire Ken Roby is still battling cancer. James “Jimmy” Knisley recently was hospitalized and is in the MICU at the DC VA hospital. There will be no general membership meeting on Wed. 3 June. On Friday, 5 June, beginning at 7 p.m. sharp, the Installation Ceremony for 20152106 Post officers also will be a joint meeting so plan to attend. The next Activities Planning meeting will be held on Mon. 9 June at 6:30 p.m. The House Committee will meet on 10 June at 7 p.m. The next Executive Committee Meeting will be held on 17 June at 7 p.m. Service Officer. All VA claims are to be in electronic form only. Phil Dunn was to resign after three years as Department Service Officer. Joyce Miller is assisting two veterans from California who plan to join our Post. The Optimists honored Legionnaires Dan Dellinger, John Giunta, Joyce Miller, Phil Mishoe, and Sean Sinclair at the Vienna Green on Monday, 26 May. Dan, John, Phil and Sean also comprised the honor guard. Americanism Children & Youth 73rd Session of Virginia Boys State, 21 to 27 June 2015 at Radford University. Visit the Virginia Boys State website. 68th Session of Virginia Girls State, 21 to 27 June Vienna Arts Society Request for Support. Lu Elizabeth Cousin [email protected] and Shari MacFarlane [email protected] explained to the executive committee the “Puzzle Project,” a project to help veterans who are patients at Fort Belvoir heal through the use of art. Money, approx. $400.00, is needed to purchase supplies for artists who help with this project. Results of the veterans work was available for the committee to review. ACTION: Dan Dellinger is to enquire if a grant for the project may be obtained from the ALA and contact Shirley Martin, Unit 180 President. 2015 at Longwood University. Visit Virginia Girls State website. Jr. Law Cadet begins Sunday, 21 June at the Police Academy Richmond, Va. School Awards will be presented at local areas schools in mid-June. There currently are five area American Legion baseball teams –our team, Vienna Post 180, is headed by Frank Werman. Next Game: Tue, Jun 2 Vienna Post 180 vs Springfield Post 176. The complete schedule and information about the team is available on the team website. The Annual Post 180 Golf Classis will be held Friday, 19 June at Penderbrook. Volunteers needed, see Phil Dunn. I would like to welcome our newest members to our American Legion Family: Mike Mears James E. Short Diana M. Tamarez Our current membership stands at 691 which is only 90% of our 2015 goal. If you haven't renewed please do so. You are a very important part of our family and in order for our voice to be heard in Congress, we need every veteran behind us to insure that our veterans get the best care possible. The 2016 membership cards are in and if you have a chance, stop by the Post and leave your dues. Or you can go on line and renew. Finance. The April P&L was reviewed. A discussion took place about some items. House. The April banquet manager’s report and suggestions were reviewed. A few suggestions submitted included: Trash bags are needed, photos of candidates for election would be helpful, and there should be a committee for volunteerism. The beer cooler needed repair, the draft beer taps were down, and the double door freezer needed repair. June 2015 June 5. The District Conference is Sunday, June 7 at Post 177 in Fairfax. It starts with the Legion at 12:00 and then we go to our meeting room. Hope to see some of you there. Our active members are dwindling fast, but thanks to those people and a few very much appreciated volunteers we got the flags on the veteran’s graves at Flint Hill Cemetery Thursday (in the rain). I want to thank Margaret Dellinger, Marion Reeves, Coleen Walsh and Toni and Vito Florimonte for a job well-done. Also, we gave out poppies on Friday and Saturday at some stores in the area and at Viva Vienna on Sunday and Monday. I want to thank Marvis Bender, Carolyn Davis and daughter, Dan & Margaret Dellinger, Marion, Marivic Uhron, Joyce Miller, Estelle McNeil, Pilar Walsh, Ron Patterson, Phil Hendrickson and Jordan Hendrickson, and John Reeves for this very important job. Also, Dan Dellinger, John Reeves and anyone else who helped put the tent up and Dan, John, Jordan and Joe Payne for taking it down and putting it in the truck. Our last meeting until September is June 10. Hope to see more of you then.
