Camellia collector turned grower

L
ocated smack-dab in the center
of Georgia’s peach-growing
country is County Line Nursery, a
specialty nursery and the South’s
leading grower of Daphne odora, or
winter daphne, an evergreen shrub
known for its very fragrant, pale
pink flowers. Originally from China
and Japan, winter daphne is a perfect companion to camellias, which
are a frequent staple in a true Southerner’s garden.

only does he show them at gardening
shows, he also was a big proponent
in getting a camellia garden installed
at the Columbus Botanical Garden.

Tommy Alden, owner of County
Line Nursery, is a renowned grower
and collector of camellias. Alden
was introduced to camellias as a
young child by his father, who was
active with Massee Lane Gardens in
Fort Valley, home of the American
Camellia Society. In 1986, Alden
decided to get into the nursery business as a natural progression of his
farming life. Approximately eight
years ago, due to a void in the market, Alden began growing eight to
10 varieties of camellias. That’s
when County Line Nursery took off.
Now, the nursery sells hundreds of
varieties of camellias, primarily japonicas, sasanquas and reticulatas.
“All camellias have a story,” says Alden. Antique camellias were grown
before 1900 and were originally
from Asia. Most of the older varieties you see today originated from
Magnolia Gardens near Charleston,
S.C. Newer varieties are essentially
hybrids of the older camellia variet-
ies and more recent ones. Camellia
varieties are typically named after
someone near and dear to the grower’s heart. Dr. Walter Homeyer, of
Macon, is a hybridizer and named
one of his camellia hybrids after his
daughter, Fran. A camellia variety,
named Betty Floyd Sanders, is after
the wife of former Gov. Carl Sanders.
Alden says collectors get real excited when they find a camellia variety
they think was lost. “It’s fun to make
that kind of discovery,” says Alden.
Camellias are categorized into three
general types: sasanquas, reticulatas
and japonicas. Reticulatas are difficult to root, but once established, have
great, big blooms. A good portion of

A common misconception is that
camellias are fragrant. Japonicas provide plenty of blooms, but produce
no smell. That’s where companion
plants come in. Gardeners complement their camellias with winter
daphne, tea olive and edgewathia.
That way, they can have both beauty
and fragrance in their gardens.
Alden, his son Travis and six nursery workers grow these companion
plants on 12 acres in Peach County.
Alden’s nursery sells strictly wholesale to garden centers around the
South.

per year at Massee Lane Gardens.

festival is usually held in February.
“Hobbyists are very giving,” says
Alden. “They love to give other
collectors cuts from their camellia
varieties, and vice versa.” New camellia varieties come about through
the process of grafting. Hobbyists
usually only graft one to two plants
at a time. Grafting takes place once
a year during the winter months.
Spring is too late to graft camellias.
When one camellia with a desirable quality, such as a pretty bloom,
is grafted with one that may be
hardier, a new variety is created.
Seventy-five percent of all grafts
take, according to Alden.
Alden is considered a guru when it
comes to grafting camellias. He offers a grafting class each winter. If

Flint donates $5,000 to
Share the Season, with help from CoBank
he 2013 holiday season for
Marion County residents got
a little brighter with a $5,000 donation from Flint Energies and
CoBank, the national cooperative
bank that serves Flint and other
electric cooperatives. The donated
funds will support Share the Season Community Service of Marion
County’s outreach programs that assist children, the elderly and disabled.
