The Commander’s Message

It seems that Spring may finally be at hand. Let’s hope that the boating season is a good one, blessed
with great weather, and, especially for us sailors, fair winds. From my conversations with other boaters, I
know that many of you are well behind in preparing your boats for the season. There is not much anyone
could have done about this given the mountains of snow, ice and cold that besieged us this winter.
As you know, Bayside holds many of its educational programs and classes at the Williamsburgh Yacht
Club in College Point. The club graciously permits us to use its facilities free of charge and is a
wonderful, friendly host. What you may not know is that the Williamsburgh Yacht Club was150 years old
this past April. It was founded in Brooklyn by a group of boaters (all sailors I am sure), who voted on April
11, 1865 to incorporate as the Williamsburgh Yacht Club. To put this date in perspective, it was four days
before the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865. That is a long time. Since then the club
has moved its facilities a number of times before arriving at its present location on Flushing Bay.
A number of us from Bayside were privileged to be invited to Williamsburgh’s 150th anniversary
celebration, change of watch and opening day ceremonies. I was among that group and enjoyed the day
immensely. Considering the history of the occasion, it was even more of a privilege. I also had the
opportunity to chat at length with our fellow Bayside member and my own grammar school classmate
Brian Finn. The years certainly have rolled by fast, too fast in fact!
This is the season for Change of Watch for the squadrons in District 3. Our own Change, one of the last
in the District, is upcoming on May 4, 2015 at Divine Wisdom School in Douglaston. You are all invited
and urged to attend and to mingle with your fellow squadron members and members of other squadrons
in District 3. Let’s have a good showing!
Upcoming too on May 23 is the District 3 event at the Long Island Ducks game. The members of the
District will be on the field wearing white shirts and their life jackets. This event will help to publicize the
United States Power Squadrons and comes, appropriately, at the end of Boating Safety Week. I remind
you also of the District 3 Rendezvous East for 2015, which will be held at Strong’s Water Club in Mattituck
from July 31 - August 1. The application to attend can be found on page 17 of this issue. This is a
relaxing, fun weekend. So come and enjoy it.

Educational Officer’s Report

America’s Boating Course, which was supposed to start on 5 March but started on 12 March,
because of Mother Nature, is now complete. Of course it could not be completed without one
last curve ball. Opening Day for the Williamsburgh Yacht Club was on Saturday 11 April. The
members needed to put the finishing touches on the renovations before the ceremony, so we
had to relocate one more time. We found ourselves back at the TASCA boathouse; this time,
the boathouse had electricity but it did not have heat. The situation could have been much
worse. The heat actually went out during the winter, which caused the pipes to burst, which
meant there was no water for the toilets. For the test, the heat was still out but
fortunately, the toilets were fully operational – disaster averted. The move was for only one
day, and it was the day of the final exam. Even though there was no heat, I think it is safe to
say that the students taking the exam did not have any brain freezes since all three students
passed with high marks. At this time, I am planning on starting another public boating class
on Tuesday 2 June at the Williamsburgh Yacht Club. It is not written in stone, but I have my
hammer and chisel standing by.
The Piloting class is back on course now. It too had to be diverted because of the renovations,
but the students were able to get their bearings and get back on their dead reckoning track.
They have just begun the first part of the practice cruise. This will tell us if we should allow
them on our boats. I do not have to worry about them coming on my boat, since my boat these
days is a rented kayak.
As you probably know, or should know, National Safe Boating Week starts on Saturday 16 May
and ends on Friday 22 May. Needless to say, you should not be thinking about boating safety
for just this one week. As our safety officer, Dan Fannon has said, you should be thinking
about it all the time. You should be going over in your head all the possible problems you may
encounter and, more importantly, what to do when (not if) those problems happen.
As many of you know, we teach most of our courses at the Williamsburgh Yacht Club in College
Point. Last month, Bayside Power Squadron members joined the members of Williamsburgh at
their opening day ceremony, when they also celebrated their 150th Anniversary. I want to say
congratulations to Commodore John Rice and all the members of the Williamsburgh Yacht
Club and express my appreciation for helping us educate the public. Only 71 years until
Bayside’s 150th Anniversary, so mark your calendars. Photos from the event can be found on
Page 15.

Trust your Instincts
One of the great wonders built in to the DNA of all living creatures is the wealth of natural instincts,
those automatic, self-generating responses that stand ready to serve and protect. Like the instinct of
the salmon swimming upstream or the migratory patterns of birds, when a human suffers a severe
trauma, the body will inherently cause itself to go into “shock”, a state that mercifully shields the
conscience mind “instinctively” from the horror of the moment, and that allows the body to devote all its energies to
keeping itself alive.
In a wider definition, instinct is both inherited and learned; the combined effect of unconscious defenses and conscious
knowledge accumulated by a lifetime of learning, experience, and simply paying attention to who we are and where we
are. As such, instinct plays a bigger role in the safety of our daily lives (and certainly in our boating lives) than we
probably realize. When we are underway and come upon a large wake, we “instinctively” angle the bow 10-15 degrees to
the line of the wake. Why? Because experience tells us that this makes sense, our subconscious reminds us to avoid
rockin’-n’-rollin’ ourselves into the misery of sea sickness, and because we act on the authority that comes from having
been trained by the best USPS instructors in boat handling in America.
I have been thinking about and working with instinct a lot lately. As some of you know, my beloved dog, Mabel, our
Bayside Mascot and author of the article in January’s Running Lights on Doggie Boat Safety, was diagnosed in January
with spontaneous diabetes. With hard work and insulin twice daily, that is now under control, but one of the cruel effects
of diabetes is that it almost always steals a dog’s eyesight. Sadly, and literally overnight, Mabel went blind three days
after having attended the Bayside meeting in March. The best canine ophthalmologist/surgeon in New York can do
nothing, so life for Mabel and me has changed forever. It is a heart ache beyond the telling, but I know that my friends
in the USPS and Bayside believe as I do that life is defined not by the winds and storms of the moment, but rather, by
staying a steady course with courage and an unending dedication to living as fully as possible.
All this means is that Mabel has a new lesson for us in boating safety. She asks us to trust our instincts on the water as
she is now having to trust her instincts on land. As we start a new season, we encourage you to have a renewed
awareness of and reliance on the wealth of boating instincts you have developed over the years. Mabel’s instincts tell her
that going up a flight of stairs is scary, but her experience allows her to trust my voice as I guide her through the
darkness. It is amazing how the unseen and unknown can be overcome by instinct, trust, and learned behavior, and that
is never more true than when on the water. I have seen instinct at work as Gene Molteni adjusted the tension of the
mainsail as his eye surveyed its shape. I have watched Gil Allen bring his substantial vessel gently to dock by the
instincts of a dedicated seaman. I have heard the voice of instinct at play in Nina Anastasio’s leadership in education,
and I have learned from the beauty and worth of instinct in all of us.
The point is that each of us are individuals with our own, unique set of instincts and experience, so as you head out to
summer seas, be mindful of your instincts, be grateful for the gift of them, and trust that they will see you through.
Mabel sends her best wishes for a safe season on the water.

Like most of us, I can scarcely believe that the hard winter
of these past months is over. I thought that life in the
Tundra would never end, but the good news is that now, we
are preparing for a wonderful (and well-earned) warm
season on the water. There is a lot going on at Bayside over
the next few weeks which Sharon Molteni’s Bayside Buzz
details in specific.
New Members:
Little Neck Bay - 1940
Sometimes joining a new organization can be a bit
confusing, especially when you hear someone at a meeting
say something like, “the squadron EO was contacted by the
DEO to remind all ranking Lt/Cs and P/Lt/Cs that are Ps, APs,
or JNs that they are encouraged by the D3 D/C to continue
their education so that they will become SNs with a full
ticket”.
HUH???!! With a lot of USPS activities and educational opportunities comes a lot of acronym lingo, so
don’t be shy about asking what everything means. Once you know, you’ll have a good LOL.
District 3 Rendezvous – another reminder!
July 31st to August 2nd at Strong’s Marina, Mattituck, NY. One of the most enjoyable events of the
USPS year. Don’t miss out and send in your reservations for the weekend’s activities. The activities
flier is found on page 17.
Change of Watch – May 4th
Be there! Not only is this a great evening celebrating our squadron and to welcome Jim Jordan for
another year as our Commander, but we also are hosts to many USPS members and officers in the
whole of District 3. Remember that the event is held at Father Smith Hall – just up the block from our
usual meeting room. The flier can be found on page 5 of this issue. Looking forward to seeing all of
you there.

Let us celebrate Bayside’s 79th Change of Watch on Monday, 4 May. This proud tradition, of installing our new officers and committees for the year, will take place in Father Smith Hall, which is
around the corner from the Annex – at 245St. & Alameda Ave. This is a wonderful way to wish
Cdr James Jordan, N and his Bridge the best as he begins his second term and a terrific way to say,
“Job well done” to those who have served this year. Let’s not forget meeting and greeting members
from throughout Long Island, which is District 3.
May also brings our Annual Multi-Squadron Picnic on May 17th so come out and join us...Let’s
have some fun. Mark your calendar. See details for the Multi-Squadron Picnic on Page 16.
At the District Change of Watch, in March, Distinctive Communicator Awards were presented to P/C
Mike Frigano, SN for the Running Lights and P/C Tom Biglin, SN for our Website. We also received an
award from National for “Doing it Right.” In addition, Cdr Jim Jordan, N was delighted to receive a
certificate for placing 4th in the District 3 Commanders Challenge.
Now is the time to plan on attending the District 3 Rendezvous, which will be held in Mattituck
for the second year. Mark your calendar for July 31st through August 2nd. If you haven’t done
so already, see Page 17 for details about the festivities. Information was sent out on Sail Angle a
few months ago.

A “Merit Mark” is awarded by the chief commander to a member for substantial
personal effort in furthering the interest, programs and objectives of USPS, its
districts and squadrons. It is a coveted award; it is by and large the only official
recognition members receive for their efforts. Only one merit mark may be awarded

This time of year is a love/hate relationship for me. I love it because there are 52 days until summer, three
more changes of watch and one more article to write and then I can go on vacation. I hate it because with
the May flowers that the April showers brought, my allergies are going to be driving me crazy until the
summer kicks in.
Last month, I celebrated my 45th birthday. I used to think that I was still young until I saw a commercial
on TV that said children and teenagers have the arteries of a 45-year-old. Based on that comment, I had
better start making my funeral arrangements. Maybe I will donate my body to science and hopefully
future doctors can find out why I could not catch any fish and help other unfortunate fishermen like me.
Since I retired, I have been exercising more and my cardiovascular system is better now than when I was
25. I wish I could say the same thing for the rest of my body.
I wanted to get a big cake to share with my friends but being on a fixed income I have to watch what I
spend. That is when I had a brilliant idea. My birthday was on the same day as Old Field Point’s change
of watch so I just used their cake as my birthday cake. No one knew the difference, which may not be such
a good thing since Old Field Point is 29 years older than I am and probably has better arteries than me.
Needless to say I got a few gifts and one of them was from my doctor. For my mid-life celebration, I got a
colonoscopy. My visit to the doctor was on 1 April, so I thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Getting the
colonoscopy is not the worst thing – thanks to anesthesia. The worst part is the prep work that I have to
do the day before – lots of laxatives and no solid food. And to add insult to injury, I cannot have Coca-Cola.
That may cause me to have some adverse side effects, so you may not want to come near me for at least 48
hours. It might be a good idea to evacuate Queens – as well as Brooklyn and Nassau – just to be on the
safe side.
There were many changes of watch last month including Port Washington Power Squadron. I always like
going to that change of watch, and its not just because of the food. The commander always makes sure that
we have a beautiful day to enjoy the view of Manhasset Bay and the sunset. It is also one of the few
locations that I do not need a GPS to tell me how to get there. In one week, I gave my GPS a real workout
because I had to travel to Mount Sinai, Smithtown and Patchogue. There were times when I missed a turn
and instead of the GPS saying, “Route recalculation,” it said, “I’m too tired, use Google Maps.” These are
the times when I wish I had a wife so she could tell me where to go.
As I mentioned earlier, there are 3 changes of watch left. One of them is Bayside’s. I hope you will join us
for an evening of food, fun and friends. It will take place on Monday 4 May. The food, fun and friends will
continue on Sunday 17 May at our annual multi-squadron picnic at Tappen Beach Marina in Glenwood
Landing. And needless to say, we do not like it when the food, fun and friends stop, so it will continue
again on Saturday 23 May at the Long Island Ducks baseball game and barbecue. If anyone needs the
address to the stadium, it is 3 Court House Drive, Central Islip, NY 11722.
