Readers,
April showers bring May flowers. We are very entrenched in spring; the many
evening showers cool and enable you to breathe in nature’s fragrance and lull
you gently to sleep. So many special events and surprises during this period.
We celebrate Labor Day, Flag Day, Mother’s Day, numerous fêtes patronales
(patron saints festivities), and we will begin the month of June with the country’s
largest book fair. The fêtes patronale are a must experience while here. On May
8th, for example, head to Saint Michel de l’Attalaye in the Artibonite Department
and enjoy the festivities to commemorate Saint Michel.
On behalf of the Magic Haiti team, I would like to welcome you to Ayiti and
encourage you to take time to flip through this issue as there are so many
interesting articles that will show you the depth and breadth of our culture as
well as our diversity. The King of Sports, Haiti has a team and you will meet its
captain, a new restaurant has burgeoned in Morne Calvaire, uncover a center
which is helping both men and women with infertility. The passion of a wellestablished designer is exposed, silk with a Caribbean twist brought to light
and a gallery awaits your visit.
The goal of the magazine is to share many different aspects of our culture so
that you can delve into and experience the vibrancy of this remarkable island.
Take advantage, go snorkeling, hike in the mountains, leave your footprints,
collect memories, and be sure to showcase your travels as an ambassador.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Mother’s of the world a
very Happy Mother’s Day. Take a piece of Haiti home as a gift for mom.

We begin the second quarter of the year with
memorable souvenirs and enticing prospects.
Indeed, the history of tourism in the southern
coastal region has been forever changed. 71 diplomas were awarded to young people who graduated
from the Institute of Hotel and Tourism Training
of Les Cayes (IFORHT South). It is the first tourist training school established outside of Port-auPrince. Launched in 2013, this initiative has generated its first graduates. The very important southern
region known for its hospitality, beautiful beaches
now has a qualified service staff.

avec des souvenirs mémorables et des perspectives
alléchantes. En effet, nous venons de marquer d’un
encre indélébile l’histoire du tourisme dans la région
côtière Sud du pays par la remise de parchemins à 71
jeunes sortis de l’Institut de Formation Hôtelière et
Touristique des Cayes (IFORHT-Sud), la première structure de formation touristique établie hors de Port-auPrince. Cette initiative lancée en 2013 nous réjouit déjà
d’une bonne récolte. La très importante région du Sud
connue pour son hospitalité, ses magnifiques plages a
désormais un personnel qualifié pour le service.
The future holds equally promising
signs in maintaining the stability in the remarkable growth of the Haitian tourism industry. We
will welcome the twelfth edition of the great
Caribbean festival CARIFESTA scheduled for
August 13-24, 2015. This event which will bring
together more than two thousand (2,000) stakeholders from other islands will put Haiti in full
limelight during the heart of the high season. We
are pulling out all stops to make it a success.

croissance remarquable de l’industrie touristique haïtienne. Nous accueillons la douzième édition du grand
festival caribéen CARIFESTA l’été qui vient soit du 13 au
24 Août 2015. Cet événement qui réunira plus de deux
milles (2,000) acteurs venant d’autres îles mettra Haïti
sous les feux de la rampe en plein cœur de la haute
saison. Nous mettons les bouchées doubles pour en
faire une réussite.

that will host the festival have already been evaluated in the provincial cities (Cap-Haitien, Les Cayes,
Jacmel, and Gonaïves) selected for the event as
well as in the capital. CARIFESTA will afford Haiti
another opportunity to amaze the world with our
craft, music and gastronomy.

major projects with which we intend to position

Beach in Saint Louis du Sud is freshly renovated
while work at Bassin Zim in the Central Plateau is
progressing rapidly.

Creations, is passionate
about art and crafts. Her eyes
see beauty where others only
see a random piece of iron or cloth.
She has the patience and determination that it takes to turn virtually anything into art. In fact, her workshop
in Varreux shows how adept she is
at valuing every single piece of artwork she gets from the hundreds of

artisans with whom she works.
As I enter Pascale Theard
Creations, I am amazed, I notice
beauty everywhere, starting from
the djakout (haitian traditional bags),
then going to that unique snake
made from recycled milk cans. “This
is my showroom, and they're all for
sale even though sometimes it is
hard for me to let them go. However,
my husband is doing a great job at
preventing me from keeping them
all to myself!” she explains after she

“This fine skill needed to be
exposed,” Pascale says, before
adding proudly that she contributed in honoring the Vêvê which
is now a trend. “When I first
started working with the Vêvê,
the Haitian community was
reluctant. It took them some
time to embrace this side of our
culture. I am so glad I was part of
this great change of mentality,”
she explains with fervent passion.
When Pascale Theard Creations
first started, the designer was
still resided in France. She would
design the pieces and then get
them executed in Haiti. She
encountered such a great
success in the showrooms that
she decided to go back to Haiti
and get everything done from
her homeland. It has stopped
being just a hobby. The artist quit
her job and dove full heartedly
in the artistic universe. “I have
always been fascinated by arts
and crafts. Seeing what people
can achieve with raw materials,
especially animal skin always
leaves me speechless. Working in

shares with me the chronicle
of each item. Her love for the
Haitian culture brightens her
face as she goes from wall to
wall, introducing me to the
work of Lionel St-Eloi, Lherisson
Debreus, Jean Mickerson, and so
many other skilled artisans.
Pascale was born in Haiti,
through her father, a Haitian
art enthusiast and her French
mother, whose family had
been in the leather business for
centuries, she developed a love
for Haiti and an appreciation for
this fine material. She laughs as
she recounts that her maternal
grandfather only gave them
leather gifts as children and
adolescents in order to learn to
appreciate the quality of various
skin.
She spent 15 years in Par-
is, where she completed her
studies. She has a master’s in
finance, but she always showed
so much creativity in her work
that her boss advised her to try
something closer to the arts.
That's how she transitioned from
finance to Luxury Marketing. In
this new area, she had the opportunity to flourish while working
with a few well-known French
brands such as Hermès or JeanLouis Scherrer en Haute couture.
Working in these divers ateliers
open her eyes on the immense
opportunity that exists for Haiti
in handmade products.
With such a creative
spirit, she soon felt the need to
express herself a little bit more
and flaunt a part of her culture.

the artistic field has always been
a pleasure,” she confesses.
The business quickly took
off and turned into what is
not really an art gallery but
surely more than just a shop. The
andals, purses, necklaces,
bracelets, and even iPad cases
sold there are designed by Pascale, and executed by a welltrained staff of 26 individuals. “It
doesn't matter how much time
we spend working on just one
item. The most important thing
is to put love in what we do
especially for handmade pieces.
Love for work well done is what
I teach my team. Together we
make sure we offer the finest
products.” This explains why her
products blend so well both
quality and beauty.
Besides designing her
different lines of products,
Pascale also became respected
as an interior designer for the
“Haitian touch”, when a friend
came to her home and was
in awe. From then someone
asked her to design hotel rooms,
another person wanted their
residence to be enhanced, and
then she was called by government officials. It was becoming
more than a hobby. As a result
she opened 1804 Design in
October 2011. She received
even more notoriety after all the
positive reviews she received
about her house which was
featured in the December 2011
issue of Magic Haiti. In this arena,
she works with more than 200
artisans. Pascale played a key role
in infusing Haitian art and crafts
at Best Western Premier.
It takes a lot of creativity but
also a lot of determination to
continually produce high end
pieces. “More and more the new
trend is to acquire personalized
items. Handmade pieces and
tailor made pieces are priceless. And here in Haiti, they are
affordable. I am so pleased to see
the demand for such pieces to
continually grow here and I am
equally pleased with the social
and economic impact that it
has on the many talented artisans who create them,” Pascale
articulates with ardor as she
continues to impart the importance of arts and crafts in the
Haitian economy.
Pascale is not afraid of this
challenging opportunity. She
has the unique opportunity
to present a side of Haiti that
people don't see often via fine
arts and crafts. “I love what I do.
Haiti is in my Heart and Haiti’s in
my art,” she says with sparkling
eyes and a bright smile.

by several culinary styles
from various ethnic groups,
including French, African,
Spanish, and Middle Eastern cuisines.
If you are looking for Middle Eastern
style cuisine in Haiti, the newly-opened
Sahara Bar and Hookah Lounge is happy

Opened in December 2014 by husband
and wife duo George and Chantal Dagher,
Sahara Bar and Hookah Lounge is located in
Morne Calvaire, a neighborhood in the hills
of Pétion-Ville. “We wanted to create a place
where our guests would feel as if they are
at home,” Chantal tells me. “We wanted to

The grounds of Sahara
are a lush green oasis. When
sipping on a cocktail by the
pool, guests are privy to the
soothing sounds of water
trickling in to the pool. It
gets even better at the indoor
bar, which offers a stunning
panoramic view of Port-auPrince in all of its glory.
Decorated by designer
Martine Boujolly Cantave,
the walls are adorned with
vibrant paintings and
the seats are covered
with brightly colored
cushions. In addi-
tion to being a feast for the
eyes, Sahara is known for its
delicious tapas and cocktail
menu.
Start
your experience with a
Saharak cocktail, a mix of
blue Curaçao and Arak, a
Levantine alcoholic spirit from
the anis drinks family that is
also a traditional beverage in
Middle Eastern communities.
The tantalizing aroma and
flavor from the anise and the
bright blue of the curaçao
make for a mouth-watering
cocktail.
The Daghers are of Syrian
descent and present the love
of their traditional cuisine to
their patrons. From kibbeh,
a torpedo-shaped croquette
made with bulgur and finely
minced ground beef, to the
falafel, crispy fried patties of
spiced mashed chickpeas,
every dish is made with fresh
ingredients that burst with
flavor. I particularly enjoyed
the hummus, a spread made
from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and
garlic. Make sure to use the
pieces of flat bread to sop up
all of the extra olive oil found
in the middle of the dish!
Another spectacular dish
was the fattoush, a bread
salad made from toasted pieces
of pita bread combined with

mixed greens and other vegetables. The crisp vegetables
are cut into large chunks, and
George tells me that they use a
spice called sumac in order to
give the fattoush its sour taste.
As for the hookah, customers can choose from a
variety of flavors, including blue
mist, mango, white grape, and
mint. Hookah fans can even
purchase their own device, as
some of them are for sale in a
boutique located by the bar.
With its cool atmosphere,
delicious fare and libations,
Sahara Bar and Hookah
Lounge should definitely be
a stop on your gastronomic
journey in Haiti.

rzili depicted as the
Virgin Mary, peacocks, and
mermaids are all powerful
symbols in the Haitian culture.
Albert Semervile, or just simply “Al,”
takes these symbols and transforms
them into artistic silk masterpieces
geared towards the fashionably
art-conscious.
Al was born in Haiti and had
a breadth of experiences that led
him to launch Vèvèlle, a silk scarf
collection with plans to expand
to swimwear and sportswear.
He graduated from a prestigious
Catholic high-school and imme-

diately went into medical school
for one year. He did not pass his
exams and turned to art, theater,
and linguistics. He trained in theater
with some of the greats in the Haitian
theater scene at the time. Keeping
himself busy, he also worked in journalism and at Radio Haiti with Jean
Dominique. Reporting on what at
the time was considered radical
liberal news in spite of the dictatorship regime would land him in
prison after a raid of the station.
Realizing that his dreams would
always be limited in Haiti because
of the regime, Al moved to the
artistry that the scarves
depict can only be described
in his native tongue. Al
openly shares his dreams
for the line, "Something
that captures the essence of
the Caribbean in a worldly
way and allows others to
recognize the beauty in
the symbolism of the
culture." The mermaid
that saves fishermen,
the peacock that struts
elegantly, the native symbols that taught us strength.
As I listen to Al, I’m instantly
sold. His cloth isn’t just any
cloth. He spent over a year
researching and designing.
Working meticulously with
designers and sourcing his
material directly from Italy.
The results speak for themselves: sophisticated silk
and detailed designs. “My
scarves are works of art.
You can even frame and
display them in your
living room.”

The 2010 earthquake
served as a wake-up call and
he knew that he had a duty
to help his native country
recover. He set his sights on
vocational learning, education,
and sustainable communities
in Haiti. Due to his financial constraints, Al turned to business
to generate funds. Realizing
that he came from a family
with an eye for fashion, the
idea for Vèvèlle was born.
Al’s passion is evident
when he talks about the
Vèvèlle line. “I wanted something that stood out as
classy, something that was
Haitian and high-end.” As
he describes the scarves, he
alternates between Kreyòl
and English, since some
expressions

As we walk, she explains the
gallery’s slogan, “The ultimate
experience in art.” “After more than
32 years, I must admit that my
country, Haiti, runs along the same
precipices. As far as I can remember,
art is nourished by turbulence and
anxieties. My successes and my few
failures have helped me gain experiences. Seeing our artist’s works
hanging in other museums and
knowing that they had their first
exhibition at Festival Arts is one of
my greatest successes.”
I was awed by the history and
wealth that Festival Arts encompassed. From the works of the
master painters to that of the young
contemporary ones, I could clearly see
their vision for Haiti. I left the gallery
feeling as if I had learned a little more
about Haiti’s art culture and the men
and women who took it upon themselves to ensure that it would never be

edical tourism, or
health tourism,
is whenpeople
travel to another
country to receive medical
treatment in that country.
Traditionally, have people
travelled from less developed
countries to medical centers
in highly developed countries
for medical treatment that
was otherwise unavailable
in their own communities.
However, the recent trend depicts that people travel from
developed countries to third
world countries for medical
treatments because of cost
consideration, though the traditional pattern still continues.
At the Haitian Centre for
Investigation and Treatment of
Advanced Infertility (CHITAI), Dr
Beauvais and his staff are also
trying to turn Haiti into a well
known destination for medical
tourism.
CHITAI started off as a
discussion among a group

in 2006. Harry Beauvais,
fresh out of medical school,
and a few other doctors discussed means to fight infertility. Four years later, Dr.
Thierry Laplanche and three
other doctors joined the
Cuba, or even the Dominican
Republic to undergo various
procedures. However, CHITAI
now offers the same services
at a lower cost. “We sacrificed
a lot and we strive to provide
quality services at as the
lowest possible price, he said,
hoping that this would help
them attract more people
from all over the country, the
diaspora and even foreigners
needing these types of interventions. What is more attractive
than lower cost, quality service
and the best results.”
“At CHITAI, we respect
the standards and make
sure that our staff remains
apprised of latest procedures by participating in
training sessions in Haiti and
in other countries such as
the United States, Israel and
India. We also have the best
IVF success rate for the in the
Caribbean which is 37.5%,”
Dr. Beauvais says.

CHITAI ensures that results
and the support it provides
patients are its best assets.
It all starts with a warm
welcome from the staff the
minute the patient walks
into the center. CHITAI also
offers personalized service
to assist patients through
the long and stressful
experience. But the icing on
the cake remains those cute
babies who are definitely
a bundle of joy for their families. CHITAI receives about 30
patients per day and approximately 14,000 patients a year.
More than 100 babies were
born after an IVF surgery, not
to mention all the couples
who get treated for all types
of reproductive problems.
Marie-Ange is one of them.
She has been married for 13
years and she has been trying
to have children since the early
years of her marriage. She is now
the mother of two adorable fivemonth old babies and will be
forever thankful to the help
she got from CHITAI. “I tried
different treatments in Haiti
and abroad before someone
referred me to CHITAI. After we ran the first series of
tests, Dr Beauvais told me
right away that an IVF would
be my best shot. I agreed
with no hesitation and
started the treatment in
February 2013 and had my
first IVF in August. Unfortunately, I had an abortion a
few months later. But they
would not let me give up so
I enrolled for another IVF in
January, which has been a
total success. I'm really happy
with the service I received at

Nadège, another happy
patient, had been undergoing treatments for 10 years.
She had an insemination and
three IVFs abroad. They all
failed. Then she came back
to Haiti and a friend told her
about CHITAI. She decided to
give it a try and her first IVF
was a success. She is now the
mother of a nine-month old
little girl. “The staff was not
only professional but also
warm and friendly. I felt like
they really understood what
I was going through. It also
felt like they were not just
doing it for the money. They
really cared about me and
it helped me through the
process,” Nadège explains,
when asked what she
appreciated the most about
CHITAI.
CHITAI is planning to
expand. Dr Beauvais announced
future
projects
which
include the construction of
a brand new building which
should begin this summer.
The new addition will enable
them to serve more and more
patients. “With CHITAI, Haiti
took a big step in the medical
tourism sector. We are ready
to partner with a hotel or
tourism organization to help
our patients get the most out
of Haiti when they come here
for the treatment,” Dr. Beauvais
states with enthusiasm.

been
passionate
about horses all his
life. Introduced to the sport of
Polo in Barbados by his aunt,
he started playing at the age
of 7.
Claude-Alix’s passion translated into becoming one with
this discipline, allowing
his complicity with his horses
to bring him success. Putting
as much intensity as constancy
and perseverance, this genuine athlete contributed to his
teams’ numerous wins throughout a tremendous number of
championships.
Affected by different injuries, Claude-Alix took the time to
pursue his
childhood dream of becoming
an architect. So for ten years
he stayed away from the sport
in order to finish his studies in
architecture and design. Once
he graduated, he established

Francisco league in February of
2014 and personally founded
and financed the Haiti Polo
team, retrieving excellent team
mates to form the winning Haiti
Polo Team.
Strongly motivated by
its main objective, "Winning
For Haiti” became Haiti Polo
Team’s motto and had the
team succeed in winning
four consecutive International Tournaments in a row
in less than 8 months!
The team’s ambition,
dedication, love, strong will
and certainly perseverance
surprised the polo world.

June 2014; The Audi Sportscar Experience San Francisco
International Polo Classic in
August 2014; The Argentine
Internationals at Cordoba in
October 2014; and the Pilar

Goodwill Ambassador by
President Michel Martelly in
recognition of his continued
efforts to present Haiti in
the best light and for enabling

recognized in the Sport of
