Annual Report - Kirkwood Community College
2015 GIFT OF OPPORTUNIT Y Annual Report a pu blicat ion of t h e opening Dear Friends, On the eve of Kirkwood’s 50th anniversary, we’re proud to mark five decades of creating opportunities: identifying community needs; providing accessible, quality education and training; and promoting opportunities for lifelong learning. This is Kirkwood’s mission. Through the work of the Kirkwood Foundation, your commitment to students has resulted in a robust scholarship program, creating opportunities that help students achieve their educational goals. In just the last 10 years, we have distributed more than $17.5 million in scholarships. Because of your support, this year the Kirkwood Foundation announced over $3 million in scholarships available for Kirkwood students. These figures are more powerful in light of a recent study from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) showing Kirkwood among the highest-awarding community colleges in the United States. Yet even with these strong results, the need for student support continues to grow. Scholarship funding is available for only about half the students who apply. Our research plainly shows that scholarship support is linked to student success, as students who receive Kirkwood scholarships are more than twice as likely to graduate. We believe it is critical to maintain our promise to help more students succeed. This year, to celebrate Kirkwood Community College’s 50th anniversary, we are pleased to launch the Kirkwood Foundation’s Golden Opportunity Scholarship. Intended specifically for recent high school graduates from Kirkwood’s seven-county service area, this program is our gift to the region that has supported our college for the last 50 years. Initially supported by the Foundation’s unrestricted funds, the Golden Opportunity Scholarship was awarded last spring to 55 eastern Iowa students who will begin their Kirkwood experience this fall. The Golden Opportunity Scholarship removes the first barrier to paying for college by “filling the gap” between federal and state financial aid grants and the cost of tuition. With the tuition bill paid, families have less need for loans that lead to crippling student debt. By offering this focused financial assistance to families in our service region, the Golden Opportunity Scholarship helps eastern Iowa parents realize the goals they have for their children and helps students achieve their educational dreams. Thank you for your support of Kirkwood Community College and the Kirkwood Foundation over the years. With your help, we will continue to create educational opportunities that meet this region’s changing needs. We’re looking forward to the next 50 years! Sincerely, Dr. Mick Starcevich President Kirkwood Community College Kathy L. Hall, CFRE Executive Director Kirkwood Foundation 2014-2015 HIGHLIGHTS During fiscal year 2015, the Foundation awarded $2,564,966 in scholarships from 343 internal scholarship funds to 1,361 students. More than $3 million is budgeted to be awarded in fiscal year 2016. From July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2015, the total invested assets of the Kirkwood Foundation grew from $11.3 million to $29.1 million. During that same 10-year period, the Kirkwood Foundation awarded $17,617,267 in institutional scholarships to Kirkwood students. SIGNATURE EVENTS The annual Samuel J. That is how you rise to the top, in a quest for scholarships or athletics, and both can be very competitive. Halle Lueck is a driven student and athlete. She knows how to compete, being victorious in either case. She follows the same formula as all great athletes—practice and always put forth your best effort. Halle has a game plan of thoughtful time-management, acting responsibly, and being accountable. Whether in the classroom or on the volleyball court, her eye is always on the future. As a student athlete, there are always demands on her time. Coursework, volleyball games and practices, road-trips to tournaments all have to fit into the plan. While balancing this busy schedule, Halle continues to strive for more. She carves out time as a student ambassador for Kirkwood and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, while maintaining the grades required for Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Her time at Kirkwood offers a lot of opportunity. Halle studies liberal arts with plans of pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business management while continuing her volleyball career. She received both the Presidential and Golden Opportunity Scholarships. The Presidential award is for students with a high school grade point average of 3.5 or higher and at least a 25 on their ACT. The Golden Opportunity Scholarship celebrates Kirkwood’s 50th Anniversary as a gift to working families, helping bridge the gap between federal and state financial aid grants and the cost of tuition. Halle appreciates those who made her scholarships possible. The scholarships alleviate some of her stress and allow for her to focus on studies and volleyball. At the end of her third semester, Halle already has enough credits to transfer, but wants to complete a few more courses and evaluate her prospects. She has an abundance of possibilities thanks to Kirkwood’s smooth transfer of credits to many four-year colleges. A Cedar Rapids Prairie High School graduate, Halle is no stranger to being involved. She was a three-sport athlete, served on the student council, and was a member of Business Professionals of America. Her love of volleyball led her to Kirkwood, and the atmosphere made her feel especially welcome. “It’s a big school with a small feel,” she explained. “I love the smaller class sizes where you can be one-on-one with the instructors.” Halle also appreciates the support and guidance from her instructors and coaches. “I think volleyball has helped me a lot, too,” Halle acknowledged. “It requires you to be responsible and always have your homework done. Coach Williams really helped us mature when we came here.” Halle describes the entire campus as welcoming and comments that her teachers often ask how the previous evening’s game went. According to Halle being a student athlete at Kirkwood means you have a large support network that respects your ability, yet allows room to branch out into other interests. She and her fellow athletes form a tight-knit community. There is clearly a hint of sadness that her time at Kirkwood is drawing toward a satisfying close. She stands firm in her choice to be an Eagle. Halle considers it to be one of the best decisions she has made, encouraging others to consider Kirkwood. Only one regret lingers—wishing she had gotten involved right from the start and coming out of her comfort zone earlier. “The decision I made to come to Kirkwood has been the best choice I’ve made thus far in my life,” Halle exclaimed. “I hope my future choices will be as positive as I’ve experienced.” NE W SCHOL ARSHIPS ESTABLISHED IN 2014-2015 Jack Terndrup Endowed Scholarship Animal Health Endowed Scholarship John and Mona Hall Endowed Scholarship Behavioral Health Professional Scholarship John Lewis Endowed Scholarship Dale Simon Community Leader Scholarship Karen and James Gorham Endowed Scholarship Frank A. Steve discovered his talent and passion for writing and storytelling early in life. Growing up in rural Missouri, he attended Northwest Missouri State, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcasting. After a stint with a rock ‘n’ roll radio station in St. Joseph, Missouri, he applied at WMT radio in Cedar Rapids, where he then worked for eight years. In 1989, he became a Kirkwood Eagle, as the manager for Kirkwood’s KCCK jazz radio station. Steve was excited to be part of the college’s real-time, fast-paced learning culture. Technology advancements evolved over time and Steve kept pace with them. He helped redesign and remodel the KCCK studios nearly starting over from scratch to install new equipment. In 1997, he took the reins from the college’s first, and to that point only, public information director. Steve’s job shifted to telling stories of Kirkwood’s students and faculty, and getting out the word about the college’s events and achievements. It was in this role that he could really see the mission of Kirkwood unfold. Through the stories he wrote, Steve could see the entrepreneurial spirit of Kirkwood that permeates through the campus. That spirit was always adapting to new technologies and community’s needs, while stretching the limits of what a community college could be. “I often heard people say, ‘I think we are the first to do this,’” Steve remembered. “The best Kirkwood people are excited to be the While the college’s accomplishments were way,” he said. always exciting, it was student achievement Steve joined many of his fellow retirees that was the driving force for Steve.
