Commencement for the Class of 2016 was held at the State Theatre on Saturday, May
28, 2016. The members of this class continued the annual tradition of excellence that
exists in the school district. Over $10 million in scholarships, grants and awards were
offered to this distinguished class. Additionally, over $90,000 in local scholarships was
given to graduates.
Chosen to deliver commencement addresses were Mark Paterra and Noah Paulsen
whose comments began the Commencement ceremony. Also speaking were Interim
Superintendent Dr. P. Joseph Madak, Principal Joseph Mueller and Board of Education
President Mark Jantzen.
Senior Awards Night, which took place on May 18, honored many members of the
Class of 2016 including Megan Zhao, the BBHHS recipient of the WEWS and Ohio
elementary education and holds a
master’s of education in elementary
administration from Cleveland State
University.
Her career also includes positions
as teacher in Cleveland School
District, two principal positions in the
Twinsburg School District, Director
of Student Services in Painesville
Schools and Assistant Superintendent
in Brunswick City Schools.
The Board of Education conducted an extensive search process in
conjunction with Finding Leaders,
an educational search firm. Specific
criteria were established following
focus groups with parents, educators,
community and business leaders, and
administrators. Potential candidates
were reviewed and interviewed and a
short list of finalists was then considered based on qualifications and perceived fit in the District.
Board President Mark Jantzen
commented, “We are pleased and
fortunate to be moving forward with
Ms. Magyar to bring her aboard as our
Superintendent. She is highly qualified
for the position and brings enthusiasm
and a wealth of experience gained in
other high performing districts.”
Review of One-to-One Technology Program
for 6th Grade Students
Students who entered the sixth grade
in August 2015 were each given a laptop
computer to use throughout her/his three
years at Brecksville Broadview Heights
Middle School. This new technology initiative was implemented after a thorough
review of data, staff input and similar programs used throughout the country.
The goal of the program is to allow students to better access information, complete assignments and collaborate with
peers using the same device. Teachers
continued to lead the educational process
and present the curriculum.
Throughout the school year, feedback
was positive. To quantify the results, a
survey was developed for current sixth
grade students and their parents/guardians and administered in April.
The results of the survey were overwhelmingly positive. While there are
always lessons to be learned and areas
for improvement, families are generally
enthusiastic about the initiative. Key findings from respondents are:
The program has made learning more
fun and more interesting.
Students have become more independent learners.
Learning is more personalized.
Students better understand course content.
Students have improved their technology and digital communication skills.

named the Outstanding Senior Girl and Boy of the Class of 2016.
The top ten students of the Class of 2016 are Kayleigh Antonelli, Jamie Cowen, Sean
Dunphy, Angel Eng, Eric Fu, Danielle Schmidt, Ivana Terziyska, Madison Trout, Grace
Wang and Megan Zhao.
The entire Brecksville-Broadview Heights school community wishes each member of
the Class of 2016 success and happiness as they pursue new endeavors.
Joelle Magyar – New Superintendent of Schools
Joelle Magyar
assumed the
duties of the
Superintendent
of the
BrecksvilleBroadview
Heights City
School District
on June 1, 2016.
Ms. Magyar, the
former Assistant
Joelle Magyar
Superintendent
of Mayfield City
Schools, is a graduate of BaldwinWallace College with a major in
Summer 2016
In most cases, the 1:1 program has
freed up technology in the household for
others to use.
The laptops were collected prior to
summer break and will be returned to the
appropriate now seventh grade student in
August. The new incoming sixth graders
will also receive their middle school laptops prior to the start of the new school
year.
An additional bonus to this program
is that it is a cost neutral initiative for
the district. Rather than replacing aging
classroom computers, the same budgeted
dollars are being used for the 6th grade
laptop program. For full results of the
survey, visit - http://bitly.com/BBHdlp.

Number of Master Teachers
Continues to Grow
PSO Honors Staff Members
The PSO recently announced their Friends of the Year
honorees. These staff members go out of their way to
assist the PSO and students throughout the school year.
They were honored at the May PSO Council meeting.
“A Master Teacher demonstrates excellence
inside and outside of the classroom through
consistent leadership and focused collaboration to maximize student learning.” - Ohio
Department of Education
High School foreign language teacher
Jane-Na Chang (left) is congratulated
by Board of Education President Mark
Jantzen and Superintendent Joelle Magyar
for earning her Master Teacher credentials.
PSO Council selected retiring Food Services Supervisor
Kay Cook as the 2016 district honoree. Ms. Cook not
only provided healthy lunches for all students during
her twelve years with the district, but also went over
and above for special events including the annual PSO
Council Brunch.
Each year certificated staff members may
voluntarily apply for Master Teacher status. To
do so, a teacher must complete an application
process that demonstrates excellence inside and
outside of the classroom through consistent
leadership and focused collaboration to maximize student learning. A Master Teacher strives
for distinguished teaching and continued professional growth.
High School Foreign Language teacher
Jane-Na Chang completed the process to earn
her Master Teacher status for the first time this
school year.
Additionally, Central School teacher Janelle Valenti, Chippewa teacher Kathleen
Madigan, Chippewa teacher Don Day and Central teacher Larry Doyle renewed their
Master Teacher designation for the 2016-17 school year. High school teachers Beth Smith,
Allison Reynolds and Dan Reynolds renewed their designations for the 2017-18 school year.

Administrative Assistant, was honored for her work at the
4th & 5th grade building. Highland Drive PSO selected
teacher Morgan Kolis and Chippewa School secretary
Maria Campercholi was chosen at her school.
Hilton School could not narrow their list to one individual but rather honored three maintenance staff members. Frank Bova, Curtis Bailey
and Bob Smith’s assistance over the past year with the installation and maintenance of
the new Hilton playground was vital to the completion of the project and deeply appreciated by the Hilton PSO.
Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta
What inspires high school seniors and juniors to want to learn about Archimedes’ principle, buoyancy, hull designs, center of mass, force, engineering skills and teamwork?
BBHHS Physics teacher Mary Ellen Mauser has easily answered that question for the
past three years by organizing a Cardboard Boat Regatta as an end of the year activity for
all BBHHS physics students.
This year 240 students in 90 vessels competed in 24 first round races at the Brecksville
Community Center Pool on May 21. Four teams at a time placed their custom made boats
of various sizes and shapes into the water amid the cheers of several hundred onlookers
and raced across the pool. The winner of each
round moved on to compete again.
After surviving several single elimination rounds, this year’s winning team members were
Ethan Horvath, Mason Leuthaeuser, Brad Nerkowski and Adam Rybak.
All agreed the physics principles were not as difficult to comprehend as was getting into
the boat without tipping or sinking it or learning how to paddle.
The high school staff and administration sincerely thank the City of Brecksville for allowing this event to take place and assisting with the logistics including the removal of all
soaked boats.
News and Notes
The recent financial audit of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District by
the Auditor of State’s office once again returned a clean audit report. The district’s excellent
record keeping earned the Auditor of State Award for the 2014-15 fiscal year.
In light of concerns of possible unsafe levels of lead in the water of area school districts,
Director of Business Services Chris Coad hired an independent firm to test each school’s water
supply. The findings revealed the water in each building is well below the EPA established
limit of .015 milligrams per liter (mg/L) for lead.
BBHHS once again earned a Silver Medal as one of US News Best High Schools based on
how students perform on state assessments, graduation rates and college readiness based on
Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate data. US News ranked over 21,000 public high schools nationwide and our high school placed 9th in Northeastern Ohio and 33rd in
Ohio.
The first grade team at Hilton held an end of the year “Math Olympics.” There were 10
events set up around the school at which the students had to use the skills they learned this
year in math. The events focused on addition, subtraction, telling time by reading a clock,
measurement, greater than/less than, identifying numbers to 120, and problem solving.
BBHHS freshman Dylan Grosh-Hoy was nominated for a Playhouse Square Dazzle Best
Actor Award for his performance in the high school’s spring musical, Legally Blonde.
The Confucius Institute at Cleveland State University awarded middle school student
Mark Yaseen a 2016 Chinese Bridge Summer Camp full scholarship for July travel to China
where he will study the language and culture.

High School Earns
State Board of
Education All A
Award
The Ohio State Board of Education
awarded Brecksville-Broadview Heights
High School one of the first Annual All
A Awards for grades earned on the Ohio
School Report Card.
The state school board distributed this
new award to districts and schools that
received A’s on all report card measures,
such as growth and progress including
that of students who are struggling.
Only 28 high schools in the state earned
this award and only 8 in Cuyahoga
County.
Ohio School Board President Tom
Gunlock, in a press release, said the
board is proud to recognize the schools
“for their hard work and dedication to
excellence.”
As one of the first winners of this
award, BBHHS is part of an elite group
of high schools that are demonstrating
high-quality teaching and leadership
resulting in high academic performance
for all students.
