Five Things That …
In our continuing effort here at NTS MediaOnline Weekly to alert you
to news and other relevant information that you might have missed, this
week we’re giving it all to you in five nicely condensed and easy-toread portions that we call Five Things That …
Early Birds Fly Higher
In a recent Forbes.com post,
contributor Jennifer Cohen
details five common traits
shared by many successful
business leaders, government
officials and other influential
people. And while some go
kicking and screaming into another day when that alarm clock goes off,
those who hit the deck early tend to be more productive and successful
at work and at home. Some of the ‘Five Things Successful People Do
Before 8AM’ are:
• Exercise. Whether it’s a morning yoga session or a trip to the gym,
exercising before work gives you a boost of energy for the day and that
deserved sense of accomplishment. Morning workouts also eliminate
the possibility of flaking out on your cardio after a long day at work.
• Map out your day. The morning is a good time for this as it is often
one of the only quiet times a person gets throughout the day. The early
hours foster easier reflection that helps when prioritizing your activities.
They also allow for uninterrupted problem solving when trying to fit
everything into your timetable. While scheduling, don’t forget about
your mental health. Plan a 10-minute break after that stressful meeting
for a quick walk around the block or a moment of meditation at your desk.

“to do” list by 8am HERE.
Meet The New Boss
In a recent contribution to MediaBizBloggers.com, Sabo Media CEO
Walter Sabo details a recent experience while attending the mid-October
College Music Journal Festival at New York University. There, Sabo
says he interacted with some 3,000 attendees at an event he dubbed, “The
best organized music/radio conference.” Sabo also spoke with two young
women from student-run 89.9 KTSW, the Texas State University radio
station in Austin. Calling the duo “your next bosses,” Sabo shares their
thoughts on the rules for operating a station successfully. Number one
on that list? “We are paid for 15 hours of work per week, but we put
in at least 40.” Read the other five rules (including one for Talk radio)
for operating a station successfully from those who represent the next
generation of media professionals HERE.
Heavy Metal Lesson
From the always interesting American Express-branded OpenForum.
com, comes a post by contributor Jason Brick, who believes business
could learn a lot from Heavy Metal rockers about how to attract and keep
fans. Some of the five things (OK, in this case there’s actually six) that
we could learn from some of Heavy Metal’s most successful bands are:
• Chase Your Passion: No chart-topping metal acts got there because
they sort of liked loud music and figured it was a good career move.
They got there by loving heavy metal, practicing heavy metal and playing
heavy metal for years in cheap clubs where they were more likely to
catch a pool cue upside the head than land a record deal. If you’re
doing something you love that much, you will have an advantage over
everybody who’s just punching the clock.
• Serve your biggest fans. You may not have one, but I bet you’ve seen
at least one tattoo of a heavy metal band’s name or icon on somebody
else’s body. How would you like a fan of your business to love you that
much? Metal bands get that kind of loyalty by understanding what their

Epic Job Search Fails
Nobody ever wants or plans to lose their job. But if the unexpected
happens and you find yourself facing the considerable stress of getting a
new job, writer Kaitlin Madden at CareerBuilder.com has five attitudes
that are guaranteed to lead to job search failure. Among the attitudes she
cites are:
• “I’ll never find a job.” OK, so it may sound obvious, but a negative
attitude will seriously hinder your job search. It will not only kill your
motivation, but like the old saying goes, “If you think you can’t, you
probably won’t.”
• “I’ll take anything.” Applying to every job you see is a waste of time. A
successful job search is driven by the quality, not quantity, of applications
you submit. “Applying for just about any open position may actually hurt
you in the long run.
See the remaining five attitudes that are best checked at the door when
you’re job hunting HERE.
2020’s Around The Corner
Remember when 20/20 was a reference to your eyesight or the ABC
News show? But believe it or not, it’s actually also a year -- a year
that is much closer than you think. Just six years from now as you are
reading these words, the aforementioned job search market will have
changed quite a bit according to a feature by Rick Newman for U.S.
News & World Report. Now, predicting the future has never been an
exact science, but there are trends and developments that can be tracked
by those who choose to do such things in order to come up with a list of
job fields that that are likely to be doing well at the turn of the decade.
Among them:
• Management. The boss earns a lot for good reason: His job isn’t as
easy as it might seem. Effective management in the future will require
basic business knowledge plus the ability to oversee operations in many
locations and countries, and some technical know-how. Anybody who can
improve a unit’s performance while lowering costs should rise quickly.
There is also expectation of growing demand for some support fields
such as human relations, benefits administration, and event planning.
• Entrepreneurship. It’s often overlooked, but the need for innovators
running their own businesses could be more important than ever in
2020. Forecasters expect strong growth in traditional businesses such as
used-car dealers, hair and nail salons, pet grooming, and office services,
which means anybody able to come up with better, cheaper ways to serve
customers will reap a windfall. Technology startups will no doubt keep
changing the way consumers work and live. And nobody really knows
what the next iPad, Twitter, or Pinterest will be—except, perhaps, some
entrepreneur who’s dreaming about it right now. He or she may have a
bigger impact on life in 2020 than anything the forecasters see coming.
