A Message From The President
We began the 2007-08 session
of the St. Albert Photo Club with 3
enthusiastic guest speakers.
In September, St.Albert based
photographer, Jill Shantz, gave us a
lively presentation of her wedding

and portrait photography.
She was followed in October by
Paul Burwell with Mark and Leslie
Degner in November.
Both Paul and Mark and Leslie
gave us presentations on wildlife

The first two guest speakers in
2008, however, were no-shows.
Success followed us again in the
final three months.

photographers finished off
the year -- Kelsey Nielsen
in April and Jesh de Rox
in May.
It is always a challenge
to secure guest speakers
to come out to St. Albert,
whether they be professional or just avid enthusiasts.
As a result, we will
attempt to alter our Feature Night somewhat for
the 2008-09 session.
Instead of lining up three
guest speakers for the fall,
we will only feature two,
one in September and one
in November.
In the month of October,
we will have an in-house
workshop.
This will be on the subject of digital workflow,
using Adobe’s Photoshop
as our imaging software.
Members will be able to
submit one image each and
we will then try to work
through as many images
as possible, optimizing
them to be ready for print
or the world wide web.
As far as Competition
Night goes, the quality of
most of the submissions is
very high.
It is also good to see a
few members still shootSt. Albert

ing film.
On the subject of film,
Carousel Imaging went
totally digital in midMay.
If one can make any
prediction on the future of
film-based photography, it
seems to have become a
niche market.
Suppliers in the Edmonton area have limited
stock and processing film,
especially E-6 films, has
become difficult.
I have been using ABC
Photocolour in Vancouver
to handle most of my film
needs for over a year now
and highly recommend
them.
During the last 15
minutes of Competition
Night, we will begin a
new feature simply called
“Member Showcase”.
This is where a club
member can show us a
portfolio of their work,
photograhs from a recent
vacation, or discuss any
area of photography that
they find interesting.
September’s Member
Showcase will be a presentation on Stereo Photography.
This past year and the
year before has seen a
drastic increase in club
membership.

For many years the
club remained at a steady
number with the same
members coming back
every year.
Thanks to the work of
our webmaster, Tracey
Guzak, our membership
has increased substantially
with most new members
hearing about the club
through the website.
Thanks also must be
extended to Al Popil for
volunteering his expertise,
services, and time in the
creation of our monthly
newsletters.
Finally, Doug Poon
needs to be complemented
for sending out emails
reminding members of the
content of each forthcoming meeting.
Congratulations needs
to be extended to Al Popil
for being victorious in
winning both trophies for
his photographic accomplishments this year.
He won the “Photographer of the Year” trophy
for achieving the highest
overall score in the Print
Competition.
He also placed first for
the highest overall score
in the “Digital Competition”.
