ome returning and several new
competitors will take to the fields
at Chestnut Hill College for the
fourth annual Philadelphia Brotherly
Love Cup Saturday, October 19.
The action starts at 10 a.m., and the
teams compete in two simultaneous
matches on adjacent fields in a roundrobin format until a 12:30 lunch break
and “halftime show.” Then the action
picks up again at 2 p.m. with the seeded
teams competing in a tournament format
until the championship match at 4:45.
Hundreds of fans are expected to watch
the action and cheer on their favorites.
Inspired by the Quidditch game in the
J.K. Rowling Harry Potter book series,
in 2005 students at Middlebury College
in Vermont devised a land-based version
for mortals, known as muggles.
Quidditch has been compared to rugby, polo, flag football and dodgeball and
the coed sport is both competitive and
congenial.
In the fall of 2008 Chestnut Hill College formed a team and hosted its first
Quidditch on the Hill tournament –
Pennsylvania’s first – in the fall of
2008. Chestnut Hill College’s team
grew in ability and fame. They were featured on “Good Morning America” and
ESPN and traveled the East Coast to
compete. The tournament grew and
became the Brotherly Love Cup and

Quidditch Tournament at Chestnut Hill
College on October 18 and 19.
Chestnut Hill turns into Hogsmeade
where wizards, muggles and their parents
and friends will find spellbinding events,
fun-filled festivities and great entertainment.
The events begin at the opening ceremony on Friday at 5:30pm with Dumbledore as Master of Ceremonies. Come to
the Top of the Hill Fountain Plaza (Germantown and Rex avenues) for a Quidditch team pep rally, a thestral from
Northwestern Stables and characters
from the Harry Potter books. Later,
starting at 7 p.m., adult wizards and muggles will sample the Hill’s best versions of
butter beers at the Harry Potter pub
crawl.
Saturday’s excitement begins at 10:00
a.m. at the 4th Annual Philadelphia
Brotherly Love Cup on Chestnut Hill
College’s softball field. Free and open to
the public, the tournament showcases
eight Quidditch teams features two Quidditch pitches with games played simultaneously for spectators to view. The best
three teams will compete for the Cup in
the final bracket of the tournament.

dressed in themed clothing.
Melissa Palmer, whose Harry
Potter costume will be a surprise,
greets guests to the Alley and will
be selling floral creations complete
with lightning bolts. Poppy’s Café
has special drinks including nonalcoholic butter beer, exploding
lemonade and pumpkin juice...
Brunette’s Bookshop Bakery is
selling butter beer cupcakes and
pumpkin patties as well as fudge
complete with Harry Potter decorations. Wizards and muggles can
watch as the brunettes and other
vendors prepare their treats as they
sip on muggle cider from Urbane
Tea. In their large black cauldron,
Phila-a-Ding will be mixing up a
secret recipe for tasty pumpkin
soup.
From 1p.m. to 2p.m. there will
be a Sorting Hat Demonstration at
the Market at Fareway. Come and
see how the magical Sorting Hat
selects each student’s house. Will
you be in Gryffindor, Slytherin,
Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff? Harry
Potter and his friends will be joining the demonstrations so come see
if you’ll be in their house or off
with those evil Slytherins. In addition to the demonstration there
will be face painting and other
activities will be available throughout the day.

or a magical two days, Chestnut Hill is transformed into
Hogsmeade Village.
Germantown Avenue becomes High
Street and the shops and restaurants along the cobblestoned business corridor are changed into
Harry’s favorite spots. Whether
you know nothing about Harry
Potter or if you sleep every night
with your cloak, you won’t want to
miss a stroll through Chestnut Hill
on Saturday, October 19.
There will be no shortage of
treats at Madame Puddifoot's Tea
Shoppe (Night Kitchen Bakery),
Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor (Bredenbeck’s) and Professor
Sprout's Sweetshoppe (Cake) offer
a huge selection of delicious treats
and interesting concoctions.
Madame Puddifoot’s is selling
pumpkin pastries, chocolate frog
cupcakes, and lightning bolt cookies. The popular Snitches return to
Florean Fortescue’s – these bright
yellow balls with handheld winged
tasty truffles were a huge hit last

Firebolt 5k run

I
f you don’t believe that muggles
can fly you won’t want to miss
the Friends of J.S. Jenks Firebolt
5K and 1-mile walk.
Starting on 8 a.m. on Saturday,
October 19, energetic muggles will
show their wizardly powers as they
fly (run) through the neighborhood during the Firebolt 5K. It
begins and ends at the Church of
St. Martin in the Fields (St Martin's Lane & Willow Grove
Avenue) and winds through the
green streets of west Chestnut Hill.
The Firebolt is one of the only
timed 5Ks in the city without a single traffic light.
Young spectators will enjoy a
Kids Fun Zone, sponsored by Bow-
man Properties, at the Church of
St. Martin’s, complete with moonbounce, children’s activities and
maybe even an appearance by Harry’s best friend.
The 5K and 1-mile walk raise
funds for Friends of J.S. Jenks, a
not-for-profit community organization comprised of parents, teachers,
administrators and civic leaders
from across Northwest Philadelphia who all share a dedication to
enhancing the educational and
enrichment opportunities at Jenks.
Support from Friends of J.S. Jenks
allows the school to develop innovative programs, student support
systems and infrastructure.

Chestnut Hill College to host 2nd Annual Harr y Potter Conference
C
hestnut Hill College will
host its second annual academic conference on “Harry
Potter: Reflections on the Major
Themes in J.K. Rowling's Literature" on Friday, October 18, from
3-5 p.m. in the Rotunda, St. Joseph
Hall.
The conference is an academic
outlet for students, faculty and other scholars to present papers,
research or art related to the Harry
Potter book series. This conference
brings a scholarly component to
the Harry Potter Festival and the
College’s Philadelphia Brotherly
Love Quidditch Cup Tournament.
Presenters at the conference
include Tolonda Henderson of
George Washington University,
who will present “Shhhhh!:
Hermione and the Marginalization
of the Hogwarts Library,” and Jeff
Ambrose, M.A., adjunct instructor
in communications, arts and
humanities at Delaware County
Community College who will discuss “Teaching Through Terror:
Horror in Harry Potter.” This year
artistic presentations will also be
welcomed, including artwork and
performances.
Chestnut Hill faculty presenting
include Patrick McCauley, assistant professor of religious studies &
philosophy, who will address
"King’s Crossroads: The Border
between the Real and the Imagined,” and Robert D. Meyer, Ph.D.,
professor of biology, who will
address “The Inheritance of Magic
