President’s Message
A very warm welcome to the 23rd Annual
Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition!
We have a great show lined up for you this year! We have
quite a few competitors from across Canada competing for
the title of Canadian Grand Master. We are also pleased to
welcome guest artist, Calvin Vollrath, and our three Junior
Showcase performers.
I’m happy to say that the Steering Committee’s steps taken
last year to encourage the contestants to focus more on
traditional Canadian fiddling seemed to have helped. Even
though the competitors were still given a lot of leeway, they
didn’t stray too far away from the traditional roots of the music.
For the afternoon Preliminaries, the contestants will play a waltz, a jig, a reel and
a tune of their choice in any order during a five-minute time span. For the evening
Finals, the competitors will have five minutes to play any four contrasting tunes of
their choice.
Based on last year’s success, we are continuing the People’s Choice Award again.
Please ask for a ballot to vote for your favourite competitor during the afternoon
preliminaries. The winner will be presented the People’s Choice Award during the
evening Finals.
I wish to inform you that the Board of Directors decided not to have the competition
professionally recorded this year so we will not be selling the 2012 CDs. However, a
recorded version will be kept for archival purposes.
We have some very exciting news! We are thrilled to announce that 2013
Canadian Grand Masters competition will be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
It will be the first time ever for the competition to be hosted outside of the national
capital region, and we are hoping that this will encourage other communities
throughout Canada to take part in this project. If you are interested in attending
or would like more details about hosting the Competition, please don’t hesitate to
contact us.

Mike Sanyshyn (Cloverdale, BC)
As a multi instrumentalist (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, drums) Mike
is in demand as a live and studio musician, performing with
such artists as Aaron Pritchett, Jessie Farrell, Ian Tyson, George
Canyon, Deric Ruttan, Duane Steele, Carolyn Dawn Johnson,
Paul Brandt, Crystal Shawanda, The Higgins, One More Girl, Patti
Loveless and many others. He has released two acclaimed solo CDs - 1997’s Back To
Tradition and 2003’s Fiddleville. He is married to Canadian singer/songwriter Tianna

Louis Schryer (Chapeau, QC)
Louis Schryer is a four-time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle
Champion and has been performing for over 25 years. He is one
of Canada’s most respected and in demand fiddle players and is
featured on many top country recording artists CDs. Louis has
four CDs of his own and he can play all styles of fiddle music.
Louis also teaches fiddle and is a full time high school teacher in Chapeau, Quebec.

Kelli Trottier (Kingston, ON)
Kelli was born and raised in the hotbed of musical tradition,
Ontario’s Ottawa Valley, and continues to be a highly soughtafter instructor and judge of fiddle and step-dance events across
Canada and the U.S.; and has been nominated three times
for Fiddle Player of the Year by the Canadian Country Music
Association. Kelli has performed for Canadian soldiers in the Middle East and for
the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. Promoting her six independent recordings, singing,
dancing and playing her way to the top of her musical genre, Kelli is an unforgettable

Gordon Stobbe, Master of Ceremonies (Halifax, NS)
Gordon, master fiddler, teacher and composer in Nova Scotia.
He has developed and continues a teaching program at the
Canadian Conservatory of Music in Halifax. His performance
history includes: theatre, radio host, television host, composing
and recording scores for CBC dramas, producing and performing
on other artists recordings, as well as composing and recording his own compositions.
He is a publisher of fiddle music and instructional books and recordings. Gordon is in
demand for workshops, camps and music retreats across Canada.

Canada’s Fiddling Sensation, Calvin Vollrath
Calvin is a musical prodigy. To date, he has composed over 450 tunes, many of which
have become standard contest and dance tunes across North America & Europe. His
influence in the fiddle world is very evident. He has to his credit, 56 of his own albums,
numerous music books of his original tunes and an instructional DVD. Calvin was
commissioned to compose 5 fiddle tunes for the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010
Opening Ceremonies, as well as the theme for the international fiddle convention
“Fiddles of the World”, held in Halifax NS in July 1999. When Calvin writes a tune
for an individual, a place or an event, he has an uncanny sense of capturing their
personality or expressing its atmosphere.
Calvin is very active in the teaching aspect of fiddle music. Calvin has taught annually
at his own camp, Camp Calvin in St. Edouard Alberta, at the Canadian Grand Masters
Fiddle Camp in Ottawa since its inception in 1996, and at numerous workshops
throughout Canada and the United States.
Calvin Vollrath is a veteran recognized for his performing, teaching, judging and
composing abilities. He is now producing recordings for fiddlers from across the
country in his home studio, Astromonical, in St. Paul Alberta. In August 2011, Calvin
was inducted into the North American Fiddler’s Hall of Fame in New York State.

Michael is one of Manitoba’s most popular fiddlers, a two-time
Manitoba Fiddle Champion and multiple medal winner at previous
competitions. With two albums recorded, Michael is devoted to
promoting his style of fiddle music and the Métis style passed down
from his grandfather that have become his musical soul. He attends
competitions and events across Canada to share his musical art.

Rosanna has been playing the fiddle for 15 years. She is a threetime finalist. Currently, Rosanna is entering her third year of a violin
performance degree at Dalhousie University and plans to continue
a career in music. In 2008, she released her first album entitled,
The Home Place, which includes all original tunes written by
Rosanna and her brother. They will be releasing their second album,

Kyle is currently a three-time Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, and
also a two-time Pembroke Open Fiddle Champion. Kyle has released
two CDs titled Tribute and Charron’s Fine Blend, consisting of a
variety of Canadian traditional fiddle styles. Kyle and his brother,
Jake, regularly perform together as ‘The Charron Brothers’ and are
currently working on a new album to be released later this year.

Émilie Chartier (Winnipeg, MB)

Émilie, 17, has studied classical and fiddle music since she was three
years old. Her fiddling roots are found in her home province but are
strongly influenced by styles such as Celtic and Irish. In the last eight
years she has performed solo and with talented bands at a number
of festivals and events. She has been a passionate violin teacher
for the past three years and presently holds the title of ‘Manitoba

Matthew Contois (Winnipeg, MB)

Matthew has been entertaining audiences across Manitoba for over
12 years. Among several fiddle championships in Manitoba, he has
played for the Queen of England and the Return of the Winnipeg Jets
celebration. Matthew is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce
at the University of Manitoba. He hopes to release his first full length

Jane enjoys being a member of the Winnipeg Youth Symphony
Orchestra and will be entering her senior year in high school, where
she participates in both jazz and concert choirs, the senior band, as
well as musical theatre. Jane is committed to improving her playing
and repertoire by taking private classical lessons and theory classes,
as well as attending fiddle camps and contests across Canada.

Amélie de Arcos (Moncton, NB)

Amélie, playing the fiddle since the age of 6, enjoys being a member
of the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers and is quite busy performing with a
local French Acadian Band named Arseneault. Music has given her
an opportunity to travel in various regions in Eastern Canada and
the United States. Amélie also sings, step dances and enjoys many

Julie Fitzgerald (Bancroft, ON)
Julie is an award-winning fiddler and step dancer, a member of
Everything Fitz and has garnered numerous awards in both fiddle
and dance. On full scholarship, Julie has completed her third year
of studies at Humber College where she is pursuing a degree in Jazz
and Contemporary Music. Julie plays the fiddle, piano, mandolin

Kerry Fitzgerald (Bancroft, ON)

Kerry is a member of Everything Fitz. Not only does she play many
instruments including the fiddle, piano, mandolin and bodhran, but
is an accomplished step dancer. The highlight of her performance
career so far is having the opportunity to travel and perform on
stage with Leahy as a guest dancer in 2009. She will be entering her
fourth year of studies at the University of Western Ontario where
she is pursuing a double major in Kinesiology and Foods & Nutrition.

Tom Fitzgerald (Bancroft, ON)

At age 9, Tom had the pleasure of performing on the Tommy
Hunter TV Special Talk About the Good Times alongside renowned
Canadian fiddler, Don Reed. He has toured across the Maritimes in
the Memories of a Don Messer Jubilee Show, as guest dancer
and fiddler with Scott Woods and with the Fitzgerald family
band, Everything Fitz. He is currently the 2011 Ontario Open
Fiddle Champion. Tom, now 19, will be attending his first year of
postsecondary education at Humber College in Toronto this fall to

Braden Gates (Fort Saskatchewan, AB)

At the age of five, Braden would emulate his father on a 1/8th
sized fiddle and before long was playing along side him for dances,
jamborees, and fiddle contests. Braden, now at 19, has grown
into an exceptional artist interweaving traditional Canadian fiddle
tunes with beautiful original melodies on guitar. Braden teaches at
numerous music camps across Alberta and is currently compiling a
book of original fiddle tunes that will be released in spring of 2012.
He continues to perform traditional and original fiddle music with
the Gates Family Band and traditional bluegrass music with the IGP

Jaylee Hebert (Lutes Mountain, NB)

Jaylee began taking lessons at age four and at age five won her first
fiddle competition. Jaylee, now 16, has had amazing opportunities
to learn and play along side some of the greatest fiddlers in Canada,
and has been busy in her young musical life. Whether she’s playing
for the Queen of England, at local charity and special events,
performing in Europe or for the elderly in their homes, she is always

Greg, 25, has been a three-time Ontario Open Champion and threetime Ontario Open Junior Champion in Bobcaygeon; a Canadian
Open Junior Champion and Canadian Duet Champion with Tom
Fitzgerald in Shelburne; an 18 and Under Champion and Duet
Champion with Tom Fitzgerald in Pembroke; a SW Ontario Junior
Champion and three-time SW Duet Champion with Chuck Joyce in
Tavistock; and a U.S. National Traditional Open Champion in Barre,
Vermont. Greg has been teaching for eight years and is currently a
Stationary Engineer/Operations technician working at Styrolution,

Mathew Johnson (Waterdown, ON)
Mathew started fiddling at the age of three and has been entertaining
and competing ever since. He has had the opportunity to travel
across the country and around the World because of his music.
Now working as a full-time computer engineer, Mathew continues
to make time in his schedule to judge and compete at fiddle and

step dance contests throughout Ontario. This is Mathew’s 10th

Stéphanie has turned her passion into a lifelong career and has
developed many different styles, such as classical, traditional,
country and jazz. Her education started with private lessons, then
she pursued her studies in classical and popular music at the Cégep
de Drummondville in 1993. She then obtained her degree in Music
Education at L’Université du Québec à Montréal in 1999. Stéphanie
has since continued her studies in jazz at the University of Montréal.
She has toured extensively and worked with several reowned artists.

Alex Lamoureux (Winnipeg, MB)

Born and raised in Manitoba, Alex followed his mom around to old
time dances, fiddle camps, and music performances. By age seven,
the passion for music became apparent and Alex started getting
“serious” about playing the fiddle. Alex is the 2008 & 2009 BC Fiddle
Champion, and the 2010 Manitoba Champion. The highlight of
Alexʼs career to date has been the opportunity to perform for the
first Victory Ceremony at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Paul Lemelin (Sudbury, ON)

Paul enjoys teaching the fiddle, guitar, mandolin and Piano as well
as being a father of three young boys and a new baby girl. Paul is
also a member of the Fiddleworks/Violon a L’œuvre Fiddle and Step
dance competition” committee in Chelmsford Ontario since 2009.
He has won a number of competitions including: 1st in the Open
Category in Richmond; 1st in the Open Category in Sturgeon Falls;
and has made top five in Pembroke numerous times. Recently
Paul has been playing with various Bluegrass bands such as
The Rivets, Honey Grass and The Canucky Bluegrass Boys.

Christine Melanson (Moncton, NB)

Inspired by her grandfather, Christine started fiddling at 4 years old.
At the age of 9, she played for the Queen of England and just last
May she played for Prince Charles and his wife Camilla in Saint John,
NB. She also performed in Cherbourg, France, in Massachusetts,
USA, on Canada Day in Ottawa, and across the province of NB. At
the age of 16, she recorded her first album titled, S’envoler / Taking
Flight with her sister, Janelle. Christine also plays the piano and is
currently pursuing her studies in French literature at the University

Janelle, 15, started taking fiddle lessons at the age of 4, following
her big sister’s footsteps and inspired by her grandfather. She has
been performing at many events and festivals that have even taken
her to Cherbourg, France, Massachusetts, USA, Ottawa for Canada
Day celebrations, and across the province of NB. At the age of 12,
she recorded her first album, titled, S’envoler / Taking Flight, with
her sister Christine. Along with the fiddle, Janelle plays the piano

Eric Provencher (Oshawa, ON)

At age nine, Eric entered his first contest and has continued
competing since then. Eric has studied classical violin and has
earned First Class Honours for his grade eight Royal Conservatory of
Music exam. With his brother, Philip, Eric has performed at a variety
of fundraisers, charity organizations, weddings, and special events.
Eric, now 20, recorded his first CD entitled Into the Moment in 2007.
It earned him the Durham Music Society Award for best acoustic CD

Alex Randall (Langley, BC)

Alex has been playing fiddle since the age of seven and brings
with him the knowledge of keeping Old Time Canadian Music
alive. He has competed throughout British Columbia, the Grand
North American Fiddle Contest, the John Arcand Fiddlefest, the
Canadian Grand Masters and in Pembroke, Ontario. Alex is an
active member of the Surrey Old Time Fiddlers and the Central
Fraser Valley Fiddlers. Alex teaches privately and has taught at
Gavin Lake Fiddle Treat and Pacific Fiddle College in previous years.
He is currently compiling his first CD which will soon be available.

Natasha Richard (Moncton, NB)

Natasha, 17, was exposed very early to the world of music through
her family and she discovered her instrument while studying
violin. Inspired by Acadian folk music and Bluegrass, Natasha has
participated in numerous festivals, some of which have brought her
to Nova Scotia, PEI, California and the USA to promote tourism in
the province of New Brunswick. She enjoys singing, playing guitar
and performing with her family as well as her partner. Participating
in Maritime Idol and Canada’s Got Talent are accomplishments that

Deni Stone (Quesnel, BC)

Deni is a participant of many competitions within B.C., has helped
start music programs within the local Elementary schools, composes
fiddle and guitar songs and continues to teach fiddle music. Two
highlights include winning the 2010 Provincial Fiddle Championship
using his 5-string fiddle and being invited to appear on the TV show
You’re the Star to interview and feature songs he wrote. At age 19, he
continues his studies in music, and is currently recording his own CD.
Apart from music, Deni is a 2nd degree black belt instructor in martial

Sarah Tradewell (Victoria, BC)

Sarah was born and raised in Northern Saskatchewan. In the fall
of 2007, she moved to Victoria, BC with her family and immersed
herself in the vibrant music scene. Sarah pursues many styles of
fiddling, including old time, Celtic, bluegrass and swing, and also
studies classical violin and viola at the University of Victoria. Sarah’s
last release was a CD entitled Till the Green Woods Rang, which
showcases her fiddling as well as her vocal talent. Two highlights
include being chosen to play at BC Place for the first Victory
Ceremony of the 2010 Olympics and performing with the YouTube
Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House in Australia 2011.

Junior Showcase Performers
Nicolas Babineau, 16 (St. Rosaire, QC)
Nicolas joue de la musique depuis qu’il a environ 7 ans. Il
commença à apprendre la guitare avec son grand-père et
ensuite le violon vers l’âge de 8 ans. Il commence a suivre
des cours de violon classique avant de découvrir la musique
traditionnel au camp Violon Trad Québec. Il commence ensuite
à apprendre des pièces de musique traditionnel et se fait connaître dans différent
gala folklorique. Il joue plusieurs instruments telles que la guitare (acoustique et
électrique), la basse électrique, la mandoline, le bouzouki, et bien sur, le violon.
Ainsi, qu’il joue devant 10 personnes ou devant 2 000 spectateurs, Nicolas est à
l’aise sur une scène, lui qui, dans la vie de tout les jours, est un garçon assez réservé.

Adam Reid Johnson, 15 (Quesnel, BC)
Adam has been playing the fiddle since the age of four, and
competing since the age of five. He was Provincial Champion in
the Open category in 2010 and this is his first year playing in the
Championship category. He enjoys playing at local dances, jam
sessions, concerts, and bluegrass jamborees. He plays all styles of
music including Old Time, French, Bluegrass, Swing, Métis and Celtic. There’s nothing
Adam likes more than playing for a crowd of people, and is a true performer. Adam is
very excited about playing in the showcase and is looking forward to the experience.

Aynsley Porchak, 17 (Woodstock, ON)
Aynsley absolutely loves to perform many styles of fiddling and is
very grateful for being able to compete across Ontario and in the
United States as well as play in many shows. One of her favourite
things to do is help others with their fiddling. She is very thankful
for having two great fiddle teachers in her life, Gerald Hamilton
and Doug McNaughton. Aynsley is very grateful, not only for their instruction and
guidance but also their friendship and support throughout the years. Aynsley gives
thanks to Patti Lamoureux and the CGMFA committee for inviting her to be in the
Junior Showcase, a long time goal. She wants to also thank all the family, friends and
other fiddlers (past and present) for their love, support and inspiration.
