The mual Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Readlyn
Community Club, will be held in Readlyn at the City Park
on Saturday, April I I, at 9:30 am.
Th€ East€r Egg Hunt has been held for 40 plus years
and the coordinator, Ellen Thies, has helped out for many
of those years. Ellen estimates that they number 400-500
eggs each year.
All kids, ages 0-9 are invited to attend. The eggs will
be hidden around the city park according to different age
groups. These age groups are 0-3 year olds, 4-5 year olds,
6-7 year olds and 8-9 year olds. A{ler finding the eggs,
they will compre their number to those listed on signs
and flyers around the park. Each child will then need to
go to the location and pick up their prize.
In the event of bad weather, the Easter Egg Hunt will
be held at the Readlyn Fire Station.

March 9th was the monthly newcomers' dinner at the
Center Inn. Anyone is welcome to come have dinner and
get to know the nerv people in town. The evening is casual, topics are discussed to help the newcomers'with any
questions, and the meal is served. Please feel fiee to join
in and make the new residents of Readlyn feel welcome.
At this months dimer there were 13 people in aftendance. One new family came, Scott & Sm Wehling, their

I am continuing to receive inquires about
the
trail. ln this paper Andy Sexton will give you
an update of the status of the recreational trail fiom
recreational
Denver. He has done an excellent job explaining the
status of the trail fiom the infomation that he is receiving
from the County Engineer.
There have still been some problems in the recycling
area during this lasl month. Again, I cannot emphasize it
enough to please place your recyclables in the oroper
container. We have found garbage in lhe cardboard
containers and also other recyclables. The Green
Containers outside the recycling shed are for cardboard
only.
On a lighter note, the millage rate for city taxes next
year will go down. This does not mean that your annual
real estale taxes will go down. Your home evaluation,
county, school, and Hawkeye Area VII taxes must be
added to your total real estate taxes" lt does however;
mean that your city govement is doing its job in keeping
your taxes down.

Acting responsibly does not come natmlly.
Responsibility must be leamed. This means we teachers,
parents, and leaders must clearly express what we expect
and confiont those siluations where expectations are not
met.
Acting responsibly also means making good decisions.
All of us have made decisions or acted in ways that we
later regretted. This regret can be lessened ifwe take time
to think before we act. We need to make sure that we are
in control of oureelves so that we do not act out on
jealousy, mger, or hate.
Those of us in leadership positions need to permit and
even expect a certain number of mistakes by ouselves
and those around us. Young people need an environment
where each feels free to act on his/her own initiatives and
be allowed to make some mistakes. When prents,
coaches, teachers or leaden demand perfection, initiative
is squelched and resentment builds.
On the other hand when children are not required to do
chores or complete assignments or show up on time,
inesponsible habits take over. Putting on the right amount
of pressure is an art. Cding means confronting. Praise for
responsible behavior causes it to continue.

Spring is almost here if we cm just hold on a liftle
longer. I hope that you all had a beautiful Valentine's Day
and a very lucky St. Patrick's Day. I know that I am truly
blessed because I recently returned from another trip with
friends. It was very relaxing and fun. I hope we all will
realire how lucky in life we truly.ile. I know fiom my
personal standpoint I am lucky to have friends and family
that love me. Tbis year I have already added two more
great-great-grandchildren to my wonderful family, and we
are expecting a couple more.
With that thought in mind,

Yes, I am lucky to have plenty of work to do, great
friends to spend my time with md a wonderful family that
loves me. God has filled my heart with gladness for all of

Reserch Paper and though I think most students gol
through it pretty well. Underclassmen are getting regislered for n€xt year's classes and preparing to move up the
high school hierrchy. I really can't believe how long ago
the jump llom eighth gade to ninth gmde seems!
The big topic of discussion for many high school students is centered on Prom. Thejunior class is busy puning
the fmal touches on the event which is scheduled for April
4s. Many of the students attending the dance will take
part in Grand March. The parade of students will take
place in the high school gym April 4s at 3 p.m. It's a lot
of fun to check out all the dresses and the boys all look
pretty good in their tuxes too! The dance will take place
later that night at the Heartland Acres Event Center in
Independence.
I'm witing this during study hall and the bell's about to
ring, so I've got to run! I hope all ofyou are enjoying the
weather! Ifyou haven't had a chance yet, get outside! It's

Malone Avenue. The business flourished and I was on my
way for the next seven years at that location.
My husband and I decided to move to the country with

venture to build a new building for my salon. Good
fortune was on my side again.
Aside from an occasional visit from our resident goat
Sylvest€r (yes, in the salon), lhings went well! Country
salons do succeedl That was another seven years. Then
we moved salon and all around the comer one half mile
onto Kenny's home fm.

Hello again everyone! I hope all ofyou re enjoying the
spring swing we're on right now! I've been trying to be
outside as much as possible! | wish we had a little more
time out of school when it's beautiful outside like it has
been lately. I even asked our principal, Mr, Eschweiler,
about getting out of school for good weather just last
week. He said he liked the idea but said the teachers
might not find teaching classes outside to be very constructive! Personally, I think most students would appreciate the change ofscenery... I'll keep working on them.
Who knows? Maybe next year's students will get to have
Calculus class out on the football field!
School has been pretty much the same though both
teachers and students know we're on the downhill slide.
Seniors espwially are beginning to take a renewed interesl in the schml year countdown. With less than forty
school days to go until commencement, it's crunch time!
Making that final college decision, filling out scholarship
applications, md pmying for a roommate that we can live
with are big time consumers for me and many of my
classmates! I think most of us are really beginning to realize md anticipate how much will change in the next

With the years catching up with me and no longer able
to keep the pace at the horse fam, I went to work at Sheil
Creations, again in Readlyn. When the salon was sold, I
ventwed into another salon, Mme Event Hair Salon in the
Surge building. As luck was on ny side, ard thanks to the
following I had built up, md the liiends I have made in
my business, my future looks good. I hope to continue for

comittee member, rrcently presented the "Explore
Classroom coordinator,
Piza" activity developed by the Indiana Farm Bureau to the third graders at Community Lutherm Schml
and Readlyn Elementary. Students were given a pre-test
before they watched the pizza video which showed how
piza originated on the farm. The crust is made ofwheat
flour, piru sauce is made of tomatoes, pork sausage is
made lr.om hogs, and mozzarellz comes from the dairy

The Contest - Harvest 2008
On Thursday, February 26,2009 at the Center Inn, the
awards banquet was held for the l8* Annual Readlyn
Savings Bank - American Savings Bank Master Com &
Soybean Growers' Yield Contest: a.k.a. "The Contest."
Years ago there were a number of such yield contests but
today The Contest is the only one of its kind in Bremer
County - and perhaps the enlire state of lowa.
Sponsored by the Bmks in Readlyn and Tripoli, "The
Contest" is a fiiendly competition between area famers.
Th€ Contest banquet provides local fmers an evening of
camaraderie md discussion of farming and curent ag
cow's milk.
While the class worked on fun leaming activities in the
"Explore Planet Pim" paeket, each student made his om
piza using an English muffin half. pizza sauce, pepperoni
and/or Canadian bacon and mozzarclla cheese. Doris
Wehling led the students in classifiing these foods in the
MyPyramid while the pizzas were baking. Students
should eat a variery offoods from the MyPymmid. These
fmds are prcduced by farmen. As students ate pizza,
they completed a post-test of the activity. Special thanks
to Bremer Counfy Farm Bureau and Bremer Counry
Com/Soybean Association for the suppon of this activity.

Wapsie Valley FFA held their annual Omelet
Breakfmt in the Center Inn, Readlyn, Sunday, Mtrch 22,
2009. Many FFA members and parents helped to make
the omelet breakfast a success.

This year The Contest welcomed back Jeff Brunscheon
of lnnovative Ag and grain merchandiser for the Hawkeye
Renewables ethanol plant in Fairbank. Mr. Brunscheon
visited with the 55 banquet attendees and answeied
questions conceming the grain markets in tems of the
economic domtum, intemational competition, and the
ethanol and livestock industries.
The Contest publishes results that include variables such
as seed company and hybrid number, traits, dates of
plmting and harvesting, row spacing, population, as well
as applications of fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, etc.
lncluding these details makes The Contest more
meaningful to famers in tems of leming what gro-wing
Bailey Dobbs and Sara Doese were
the greetens at the breakfast.
Landon and Donny, Readlyn third grade students, enjoy pizza!
They hold two breakfasts throughout the year for the
sunounding communities. One breakfast is held in the
fall in Fairbank and another in the spring in Readlyn at
the Center lnn. 'l'he menu consist of omelets, cinnamon
rolls, rinderwursl donated by Sleege's meat market and %
the cheese for the omelet's being donated by AMPI in
Arlington, and hash browns.
The Wapsie Valley FFA has been holding the breakfast
for several years in both towns and seems to be a hit in
the town communities. They truly appreciate the help md
donations from the Readlyn and Fairbanl areas. The omelet breakfast would not be a success without the dedication oftheFFA members and oments.

Maik Huebner had the honor to present the "Cream ofthe Crop Award" to his mother, Ruby Huebner' This award is
given annually to a lady that is actively working in the dairy operation. Doug Blasberg presented the "'Distinguished
bairyman Award" to iraig Hesse of Readlyn. Craig has been involved in the family dairy operation all his life on
the fam located southwest ofReadlyn. The Promoters also gave away three $500 scholarships.

Fair grounds on Saturday the 21" ofApril.
It was estimated that over 500 people attended and enjoyed a lree breakfmt ofpancakes and sausage. Hansen's

During the breakfast, Senator Charles Grassley mived
and had a few words to say. State Representative Pat
Grassley was also present and talked about budget problems in the state house.
'l'he purpose ofthe breakfast and expo was to help educate everyone in attendance of how important agriculture
is to the local economy. Many commodities are used to
make products used locally. Com is made into Ethanol
and Dried Distillers Grains, Soybeans are made in to soy
meal to feed livestock and oil which is used lor lubricants,
frying food, candles, and insulation. The cattle are not
only used for food, but several by-products. Pork production in lowa is number one in the nation, and provides lots
ofjobs and use a lot of Iowa com and soy meal.
There were several companies displaying products that
used wind, solar and geothemal sources of energy. Others demonstrated using com and wood for heating supplies. All of these sources would save lots of energy
needs for us all. Soy based lubricants were on display as
well as honey producers, Llama's & Alpaca's, Goats, and
representatives fi'om the Hawkeye [thanol plant of Shell
Rock.
They all need to be thanked for coming md helping to
educate all of us on solutions to today's problems.

The Readlyn Grump Trail, the six-mile segment of the
Rolling Pmirie Trail from Highway 63 to Readlyr is still

double-sided message center to be placed at the Ball Prk
trailhead. The message center will feature maps, trail
infomation and safety tips. The Grmt was awardefby
Cedar Trails Partnership, a nonprofit, all-volunteer
organiation promoting the expmsion, improvement and
maintenance of the Cedar Trails System in Black Hawk

Christmas Decorations: Christmas decorations were

Readlyn Auxiliary Meets
The Readlyn V.F.W. Auxiliary to Post #5661 held their
March monthly meeting in the all-purpose room of the
Readlyn Library with only six memtrers present. As always, our meeting started and ended with the reading of
the Auiliary prayer. The Pledge of Allegiance to lhe
Flag is also included in our opening ceremony.
We partially planned a get-together with the Post mem-
bers sometime in April to honor our 60th Anniversary.
Our auxiliary's first meeting was held on Jmuary 13,
1949 in the Post Home then located on Main Street. A
complimentary, congratulatory letter was received from
the 3'o District and it was a surprise to all who were present.
