GILMAN
FOOTBALL
Official Game Day Book
2015
Headmaster
Dear Gilman Family,
Even as we navigate the challenges of the fields construction project, we are all so
pleased to launch another fall campaign for all of our varsity and undersquad teams at
Gilman. The games, matches, and meets that many of us will see over the course of
this fall represent the most public component of our athletics program, and we are
certainly proud of how our teams handle themselves in the spotlight. Of course, we
also know that what we see in these contests is only part of the experience of playing
sports at Gilman; behind the scenes have been hours of hard work put in by students,
coaches, and trainers to prepare for competition.
Every student and coach who steps onto the field, course, or court wants to win, and I,
too, hope that our teams enjoy their share of victories. More important, though, is the
way in which we compete. We believe that the lessons learned through athletics are an
invaluable part of a young man’s education. Through their relationships with coaches
and teammates forged in the pursuit of individual and team goals, and through the
challenges of competition, Gilman boys are able to put to practice the character traits
embodied in the Gilman Five: Honor, Integrity, Respect, Humility, and Excellence.
Yes, we compete so that we might win, but we also compete so that we might always
be our best selves.
Our football program provides these opportunities for our boys to be their best selves, and I am proud to watch these young men
wear the Gilman uniform—whatever field they are on. That uniform is a testament to all of the people—students, coaches, fans,
parents, and guardians—involved in Gilman athletics. Thanks to everyone for all that they do to bring the athletics program to life
every day. Enjoy the season.
Go Hounds!

The 2015 Gilman Game Day Book is made possible by
the generosity and unconditional support of the Gilman
Football family. It is our wish to keep the tradition . . .
“Building Men for Others” . . . a positive reflection of
Gilman athletics.
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to
everyone who continues to preserve this project as a
valuable endeavor for Gilman Football.
Thank you for your support.

GILMAN FOOTBALL,
A PROUD PARTNERSHIP
WITH
UNDER ARMOUR!
4
Director of Athletics
The athletic experience at Gilman
School is dedicated to boys learning
the principles of participation,
commitment, excellence, discipline,
loyalty, self-confidence, enthusiasm,
resilience, perseverance, and
cooperation. Gilman School believes
that participation in athletics plays a
vital role in a student’s education. In
keeping with one of its founding
principles, Gilman believes that, “The
tradition of strong commitment to
athletic participation for all students
continues to promote a spirit of
healthy and competitive
sportsmanship.” As an extension of the
academic classroom and traditional
school day, many valuable lessons are
learned through athletic participation.
The learning objective of the athletic
classroom is to foster an environment
where young people reach their fullest
potential intellectually, emotionally, and
physically.
Hopes are very high for this 2015
Gilman football season. Under the
direction of Head Coach Biff Poggi,
’79 and his impressive staff of assistant
and under-squad coaches, Gilman
Football again plans to be very
competitive in M.I.A.A. “A”
Conference title races at the varsity
and junior varsity levels. Our boys have
worked very hard to prepare for the
season. We are especially indebted to
the boys of the Class of 2016 for their
examples of leadership, commitment,
and dedication to each other, their
younger teammates, and to Gilman
School.
As the season progresses, we look
forward to many exciting and fulfilling
games. We expect our teams to play
with honor, integrity and
sportsmanship. Above all, we expect
them to remember to, “BE
GILMAN!”
On behalf of our school, I thank you
for your support for our students and
athletics program. I wish the very best
to the 2015 Gilman football teams in
their quests.
Timothy Holley, Jr. ’77
Director of Athletics
Head Coach
Dear Gilman Football Family,
The Gilman educational philosophy is multi-faceted and intends to mold and shape the
whole boy. At Gilman School we believe that our responsibility is to help families holistically
transform their boys into young men by addressing issues and needs of mind, body and spirit.
An important part of Gilman’s responsibility is rigorous athletics for each boy, each season,
each day. Participation in athletics under a qualified teacher/coach is an essential part of our
boys’ education. Athletics at Gilman are respected for their place in our educational make-up
and the benefits they bring to our students.
Football at Gilman is a high visibility fall sport that sets the tone for the entire school year.
Our commitment to a quality, winning program is evidenced by our past results. We ask our
boys to participate with the same effort and attitudes that they apply to their other endeavors at
Gilman School.
The athletic classroom provides the crucible for our boys to develop the depths of their characters. They know the benefits
and sacrifices of teamwork. They learn life long lessons in competition and the overcoming of self-imposed limitations. They learn
to win with respect and lose with honor. Above all, they learn that being a Gilman boy means that their efforts and attitudes are
examined and valued more carefully than the result of wins and losses.
Our thanks to all who played a part in assembling this wonderful booklet.
