This year it’s guaranteed to be an
action packed Easter weekend
as Port St Francis, in association
with St Francis Sport and St Francis
Tourism, host the first Eco Sport
Festival!
Sporting enthusiasts can take part
in any 5 of the sporting events over
the weekend, and will receive a
point per event. Bonus points are
awarded for podium finishes and
the Ocean’s 5 Challenge Champion
will be announced on Monday.
Events include a 5km or 10km trail
run late Friday afternoon, a choice
between the Ed Lunnon Charity
Walk or the Kromme Paddling
Challenge on Saturday morning,
a mountain bike night ride on
Saturday afternoon, a swimming
event on Sunday and a road cycle
on Monday morning.
On the eco side the Sustainable
Seas Trust and the Sea Pledge
will have an expo and Dr Tony
Ribink from Rhodes University
will give a talk on our marine life.
Rob and Sam Bester, local marine
life experts, will undertake rock
pool studies with any interested
participants. Green Guardian will
take care of recycling and waste
management throughout the Festival.
Kids can enter a catch-and-release
fishing competition off the jetties
Kids’ entertainment on Squid
Square will include a waterslide
and jumping castle as well as face
painting and games, a touch tank
with live sea creatures and various
fun activities. The Square is also the
ideal spot to enjoy sundowners and
live music in the late afternoons.
To celebrate NSRI’s 40th birthday,
a Full Moon Fish Festival will take
place on Friday night on Squid
Square. Sunday is Open Day at the
Port, people can visit a chokka boat
and meet the NSRI crew. Fishing
charters and bay cruises will be
available. Kids can take part in the ice
sculpture competition and fun hour.
Golfers can enter the Rotary Golf Day
at the St Francis Links, a Jack Nicklaus
signature golf course, on Saturday
morning.
