2013-2014 Annual Report
Reaching Out Globaly
making a positive impact in our world
Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School 2013-2014
Dear Friends,
Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School is proud to be a part of the Catholic Church’s
mission to educate students in the faith. We provide an exceptional and challenging pre-kindergarten through eighth grade educational program that is committed to meeting the needs of all
students – body, soul, mind, and heart. Today, our society expects students graduating from
high school and college to be deep thinkers and problem solvers in order to be successful in a
global workplace. At Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School, we pride ourselves on our
ability to prepare students who are ready to meet the challenges of high school and beyond.
Elementary and middle school learning is the foundation for young people to be successful
adults. In keeping with current research, we have begun a shift to a more thoughtful classroom
approach emphasizing 21st century skills such as extended reasoning, critical thinking, and
problem solving.
In the 2013-2014 academic year, OLA maintained a healthy enrollment of 531 students. It is
important to note that 71% of OLA students were also members of the OLA Catholic Church
community. As a result of the rigorous academics at OLA, students continued to score in the top
10% of the nation on standardized test scores. This year’s Annual Fund participation was at an all-time high of 97%. It is through your continued generous support of the Annual Fund that we are able to maintain the school facilities and upgrade technology each year.
The administration and faculty express sincere gratitude to everyone who so kindly contributed to support OLA and our students through the
Annual Fund. Your generosity is overwhelming. I encourage you to continue to support the students and faculty during the 2014-2015 school
year with your prayers.
In God’s peace,
Lisa Cordell
Dear OLA Friends,
I hope all had a wonderful and restful summer. Our faculty is great and eager to begin as we
continue to live up to our Blue Ribbon status. We welcome our new faculty and staff: Courtney
Botta (Technology teacher); Jake Harris (fifth grade teacher); Alyssa Nielsen (fourth grade teacher); Julie Rutkowski (Middle School Math); Kerry Sullivan (Middle School Language Arts);
Debbie Tronnes (Middle School Language Arts & Social Studies); Kelly Grant (Kindergarten
aide); Shannon Mocarski (third grade aide); John LaMarca (STREAM coordinator); and Maggie
Hoback (Specials aide); we are blessed the faculty and staff and administration is strong. Our
Principal Lisa Cordell gives us strong and pastoral leadership, and for that we are most blessed.
Para-liturgies for the younger children are held once a week, as is the Eucharistic Liturgy every
Wednesday. I believe this sets the tone and standard for our students, faculty, and staff of what it
means to be a Catholic school. This spurs us on to be all that we can be, both in academics and
outreach. Some highlights from the year include Art in the Park(ing Lot), a school wide
community picnic and student art show; the Third Annual Day of Service, a full day devoted to benefiting many organizations.
During the 2014-2015 school year, Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School is continuing to grow its educational endeavors in the area of
global impact. We will be doing more international projects as we continue our local service missions. Last year’s second grade Heifer International Project helped families in five different continents, thus our world becomes smaller and familiar. Our Day of Service includes several
international charities such as Stop Hunger Now (Haiti and Uganda) and Penny Wars (Nepal), just to name a few.
I look forward to another successful year academically and spiritually in 2014-2015. I thank you, the parents of our children – you who are
sacrificing your time, talent, and treasure to support Catholic education. Without your support, Catholic education could not continue. May
God reward your efforts, and may God continue to bless the Our Lady of the Assumption Blue Ribbon community with love, commitment,
and a generous heart!
Rest assured of my continued prayer for you and your families.
Yours in Mary our Mother,
Reverend James D. Duffy, S.M.

Community
One of OLA’s best assets is its school community. It is a thriving,
active, welcoming community that embraces students, parents,
grandparents, parishioners, friends, faculty, and staff. Newbies
never feel “new” for long as they are welcomed with several new
family gatherings, Mass and a mentoring program.

Service
When the Sisters of Mercy started OLA in 1951, little did they realize that their
“vow of service”, unique to the Mercy Order, would become tradition for OLA
students, faculty and staff. Today, their example continues to be the motivating force behind OLA’s mission projects. Initially, service projects impacted
only the local community. However, in recent years, OLA service projects
have grown to include national and global needs. Who would have thought
that a little Catholic school in Georgia could impact so many!
Day of Service was begun in 2011 to celebrate being named a
National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. This year, on September 25,
all of the projects below were accomplished in one day!
Armed Forces/USO - Christmas ornaments for US soldiers spending
Christmas in Afghanistan
Ashton Woods Nursing Home - decorations for nursing home residents

Mrs. Bennie Smith retired at the end of the 2013-2014 school year after forty-two years of
service to Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School. Mrs. Smith held many positions at
OLA and ended her career as the Assistant Principal. Mrs. Smith will be greatly missed by
our entire OLA community.
In recognition of Mrs. Smith’s commitment and forty-two years of service, a student scholarship fund for children of OLA Catholic School employees has been established in her
honor. The interest from this scholarship fund will be used to help OLA students with
tuition. If you would like to donate to the Bennie Paris Smith Scholarship Fund, please
contact Sharon Black ([email protected]) for more information.

Archbishop Honoree for 2013-2014
Janet Jovert is OLA’s Archbishop Honoree for 2013-14. Ms. Jovert is known for her devotion to her
students. For eight years, she has been a valuable member of the OLA Catholic School faculty. Ms.
Jovert’s primary goal is to have her students succeed, and she works tirelessly to help her students
to achieve their goals. Her classroom is warm and welcoming and her calm, reassuring manner
makes her students feel comfortable and eager to learn. It is not unusual to hear students say, “You
are my favorite teacher.” Even after her students are no longer in her class, she continues to follow
their progress.
Ms. Jovert’s spirituality is viewed in her actions and words. She is patient, kind, and thoughtful in
her daily interactions with her students, her family, and her colleagues. Janet is everything a Catholic teacher should be.

The 2013-2014 Annual Fund raised $381,763 with the help of our parents, grandparents, faculty and
staff, alumni, parents of alumni, parishioners, friends matching gifts, and grants. Paired with Home and
School’s fundraising of $164,554 and Grace Scholars $91,012 for 2013, development totaled $637,329. It
is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished when the entire school community joins hands in
an effort to meet our students’ needs for a faith-filled, 21st century Catholic education.
A special thank you to the 2013-2014 Annual Fund Chairs for their commitment, support,
and an outstanding job!

GRACE Scholars Program at OLA Catholic School
GRACE Scholars is a Georgia nonprofit corporation and tax exempt charity. GRACE has met the requirements for designation as a
student scholarship organization (SSO) in Georgia. Because GRACE is an SSO, Georgia taxpayers can redirect part of their tax liability
to GRACE and qualify for a generous tax benefit created by the Georgia legislature – a 100 percent tax credit. As GRACE is a tax exempt
charity (501-c-3 organization), gifts to GRACE are also qualify charitable contributions under federal law.
GRACE was founded by Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta and Bishop J. Kevin Boland of Savannah in 2008 to take advantage of
the SSO/tax credit legislation. Since then, more than 3,000 taxpayers have redirected part of their Georgia income taxes to GRACE
which, in turn, has awarded scholarships to students wishing to attend Georgia Catholic schools. All students receiving GRACE
awards have demonstrated financial need.
GRACE Scholars continues to be a program in which Archbishop Gregory personally participates and strongly supports. Heartfelt
thanks to the donors below who have supported GRACE Scholars in 2013 by designating their redirected tax dollars to OLA for scholarships. In 2013, OLA received $91,012 for our fourteen GRACE Scholars for tuition assistance.

Financial Report
OLA School Financial Report for the
Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2014
The 2013-2014 year exceeded all fundraising
expectations! Donations to the Annual Fund and
revenue received through Home and School
fundraising efforts both surpassed the previous
five years.
This successful fundraising year allowed for the
installation of new turf on the school field and a
new rubberized surface on the playground. In
addition, a double door was added at the school
entrance, technology upgrades and painting were
completed throughout the school, and thermostats were updated in multiple classrooms. The
total cost of these upgrades exceeded $300,000,
and they could not have been accomplished without the support of the OLA community.
The cost to educate each child at OLA during the
2013-2014 school year was $9,341 compared to
tuition of $7,800 for Catholic students. The $1,541
difference is made up through the Annual Fund
and other fundraising. Long-range financial
stability remains an important goal for Our Lady
of the Assumption Catholic School, and that
stability depends upon giving through the
Annual Fund and other fundraising efforts.
Thank you to everyone whose financial support
made a successful school year possible.

Grandparent and Special Others’ Day
The Luck of the Irish was once again amongst us as nearly 600 grandparents and special others visited OLA on March 7th for a St. Patrick’s
Day celebration. A light Irish breakfast was served in the cafeteria, followed by homeroom visits where students performed songs and
sing-a-longs with their special visitors. Grandparents had the opportunity to meet the teachers and other grandparents. Everyone joined
together in the gym to celebrate Mass with Fr. Duffy, Pastor and his special guest, the Very Rev. John Hannan, S.M. Superior General at the
Vatican in Rome. Grandparent Chairs, John and Mary Breen, spoke of the importance of Catholic education and thanked grandparents for
their generosity. The middle school choir and band gave an outstanding performance. Grandparent awards were announced and the program
ended with a beautiful blending of voices in a sing-a-long of Irish Eyes Are Smiling. It was a memorable morning for all who attended.
It is with our most sincere thanks and appreciation to former Grandparent Annual Fund Chairs, Ardath and Glenn Solsrud for their outstanding 50%
match of grandparent gifts from 2007 to 2013! Our deepest appreciation and thanks also go to current Grandparent Annual Fund Chairs, Mary and John
Breen, for graciously continuing the 50% grandparent match for 2014.

OLA Catholic School seeks to create a nurturing
environment grounded in the Catholic faith,
which provides for the spiritual and academic
development of each child.
Accreditations and Affiliations: AdvancED, NCEA, GISA, AAAIS, AMLI, NAESP, NASSP
Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School is accredited by AdvancED, the parent company of SACS. In 1970, OLACS was awarded its initial
accreditation by SACS, and in 2006, OLACS received dual accreditation from SAIS/SACS. Every five years, in order to remain accredited, a school
must demonstrate that it is worthy of receiving the mantel of accreditation by meeting quality standards, by being evaluated by an outside committee composed of peer educators, and by completing a self-study focused on strategic improvement and student performance. Due to this intensive
process, SAIS/SACS accreditation is recognized both nationally and internationally as a symbol of quality in education. During 2012-2013, the
Archdiocese of Atlanta began the process to receive district-wide accreditation by AdvancED, the parent company of SACS.
