operation a.b.l.e. of Greater Boston, Inc. presents
FY 2008 Annual Report
October 2008
Dear Friends of A.B.L.E.,
Another busy year at Operation A.B.L.E. of Greater Boston providing employment and training services to mature workers! We served nearly
3,000 mature workers this year between the Senior Community Service Employment Program, our three training programs, our two job fairs
for mature workers and our other employment services. We were invited to partner with AARP on a Job Fair last September at AARP’s Life
@ 50+ National Conference and Expo in Boston. We piloted a six-week boot camp for professional job seekers and received rave reviews
from our 22 participants. We won an award from the Quincy Housing Authority which enables us to expand our services on the South Shore
which we are very excited to do.
John E. Drew, President and CEO of the Seaport Companies, was our 2008 Starfish Thrower Award recipient for his outstanding contributions
to the Greater Boston community. It was a wonderful evening, including Jim Curvey, Fidelity Investments Retired Vice Chairman, providing
a vivid picture of what the Seaport District looked like prior to John Drew reshaping the area.
We continue to build capacity at Operation A.B.L.E. This past year, we hired a seasoned Director of Training Services, Mark Gyurina,
and we were able to upgrade staff and classroom computers with a generous contribution.
None of this would be possible without your support! Thank you to all for your continuing support, whether you are an individual donor,
company, corporate or private foundation or public funder. We are so grateful to all of you for recognizing the importance of getting
mature workers back to work and helping companies find ways to retain mature workers for as long as they can. The Commonwealth of
Massachusetts does not have a worker to spare and it is critical to our economy that we keep mature workers working as long as possible.
Thank you to all for helping us carry out our very important mission.
Best regards,
Paul J. Murphy, Esq.
Joan Cirillo

Executive Director
A.B.L.E. Programs & Services
Operation A.B.L.E of Greater Boston celebrates the enduring dedication, commitment, and loyalty of mature
workers age 45 and older. Our mission is deeply rooted in the belief that seasoned, experienced, and welltrained “older” workers are indispensable to an employer’s productivity, viability, and competitive position.
The products and services we provide for mature job seekers and the resources we offer to Massachusetts
employers share the common goal of creating employment opportunities for a generation of workers that
understands the value of a job well done. We work closely with human resource professionals from leading
local employers to devise job training programs and employment services that reflect real-world expectations
and requirements.
Operation EmployABLE is a 16-week office specialist training program. Operation Service! is a 10-week
customer service training program. Operation Success is an intensive six-week boot camp that helps mature
professionals and mid-level managers overcome age-related obstacles to meaningful employment. The U.S.
Dept. of Labor’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is available to low-income individuals
age 55 and older, providing paid, on-the-job training and job search assistance.
For employers, Operation A.B.L.E. offers well-qualified candidates online job postings, ABLE Showcases, and
Mature Worker Career Fairs that enable hiring managers to cost-effectively recruit from a richly talented pool
of mature and motivated candidates. Our annual Celebrating Experience Breakfast offers employers the
opportunity to honor the older workers that have contributed so greatly to their organizations’ growth and
prosperity. We also offer on-site training, outplacement services, and the ABLE Temps placement service.
Charlene Davis, Patient Service Coordinator,
Massachusetts General Hospital
“Operation Service brought to the surface aspects of me that had
been buried. The experience gave me a renewed sense of self
and the drive to do whatever it takes to succeed. I am forever
grateful for that!”

“Operation A.B.L.E. has allowed
me to reinforce my computer
skills and to get to know a great
group of men and women
who are in the same situation. While attending Operation
A.B.L.E., I became a teacher’s
assistant and enjoyed helping
and interacting with the other
students and sharing my knowledge and experience. Operation A.B.L.E. not only
teaches you the latest
technology, but they also help
you in other aspects of your life.” Manny Glin, Sr. Assistant Director of Admissions, ITT Technical Institute
“Before I came to Operation A.B.L.E., I was consistently a step or two behind my colleagues and competitors. I basically was treading water
and lacking confidence. Operation A.B.L.E. not only gave me the comprehensive computer skills I previously lacked, but the vision of how to
apply them. Combined with my life experience, the ball is now in my court. How fortunate we all are who were reinvented by Operation A.B.L.E.”
