Special Feature TV TOKYO Music Programs P.2 – 3 Approaching our 50th anniversary with a further strengthening of program content 2011.4.1 – 2012.3.31 Summer / 2012 Business Report for the 2nd Term Special Feature Approaching our 50th anniversary with a further strengthening of program content: For music programs in the unique TV TOKYO style We sometimes say that music programs are in the DNA of TV TOKYO. How do we encapsulate the world of the performer in a way that looks good on television? The answer is in the strong production values that have been part of our signature since the station began broadcasting. These have been inherited and refined not just by production staff but also throughout all departments, including artistic and technical services, contributing to the solid Nobuhiko Ohshima General Manager, Production Division TV TOKYO Corporation Planning and developing music programs in a wide variety of genres ensures the transmission of our music program DNA. A rich variet y of music programs 1 relationship of trust with the artist community that we have built up over many years of association. As TV TOKYO approaches its 50th anniversary, we remain committed to creating music programs in a wide variety of genres as a key element of our unbeatable content! 2 1 Karaoke ★ Battle : Pits professional singing stars against celebrity amateurs in a battle to the finish! 2 Favorite Oldies : Presents a hit parade of 1960s and 70s popular songs and folk and rock numbers in ranked order. 3 4 3 Tokyu Silvester Concert : Live New Year’s Eve countdown accompanied by a performance of selections from famous pieces of classical music. 4 Monthly MelodiX! : A dedicated Ⓒ K.Miura 2 Summer 2012 Business Report for the 2nd Term J-POP music program launched in 2001. Viewers applaud TV TOKYO’s Thursday 8 O’clock’s Concert launched in October 2011! Launched as part of the new program schedule for fall 2011, Thursday 8 O’clock’s Concert–JAPANESE SONG! (nicknamed Mokuhachi ) has retained its popularity since the first broadcast. What constitutes the attraction of this program, which has returned to the schedule as a regular music program after a five-year absence? Point 2 Wealth of hit songs Nostalgic songs per formed live We must surely all have songs that bring back memories of our childhood and youth, or songs that we will never forget because they coincided with landmarks in our lives. The chance to hear these nostalgic hit songs in plenty is another of the attractions of Mokuhachi , which offers an entire hour of enjoyment packed with everything from popular ballads and songs to folk numbers. Point 1 Live atmosphere Theater audience recording for an excitingly live feel Mokuhachi is recorded in a theater in front of an audience invited from the general public. The presence of a large audience and a live band sharpen the performers’ nerves, concentration, and passion. The program enjoys great popularity because of the chance it gives to see performances with a special live-audience atmosphere that studio recordings lack. Producer Interview TV TOKYO made the bold move of reviving this song program in golden time. We ask the producer of Mokuhachi about his thoughts on the program and the backstage scene. Why did you choose to record in Q front of a live theater audience? Point 3 Audience interac tion Enter tainment potential unique to live per formance The main point of Mokuhachi is to entertain the audience with songs, but as an entertainment program it is designed to include other enjoyable features alongside the songs. There is a section in the program in which a performer makes a sudden appearance among the audience to conduct an interview with a member of the public. With its opportunity for ad-libbing by the performers and unexpected audience reactions and incidents, this feature is entertainingly full of comic potential and tense excitement. TV TOKYO revives a regular music program ! Thursday 8 O’ clock’ s Concert ̶JAPANESE SONG! Presenters : Ryuji Miyamoto and T V TOK YO presenter Yuuki Matsumaru Thu 19:58 We thought that if we were making a song program, the best format would be a live audience recording with the singers performing in a theater full of invited guests. It takes more effort and costs more money than a studio recording, but we think it is the job of the production team to make better programs by setting the scene to get the best performance from the artist. The opening sequence of the Q program features Hibari Misora in a narration with title calligraphy. By talking with people in the program’s target age group, we found out that the late singer Hibari Misora occupied a special place in their affections. We felt that we wanted her to appear in some form, so we featured her in the opening sequence. The calligraphy is from her diary and other documents written during her lifetime, with each word picked out, and the narrating voice is put together from appearances she made on our program Enka no Hanamichi . we normally allow for a certain number of people being unable to attend on the day, so we send a few extra tickets, because ideally we want to avoid empty seats. But on that day, there were unexpectedly few cancellations. Nevertheless, we managed to find a solution by quickly opening up the seating around the cameras, which is usually left free. What are your future ideas for Q Mokuhachi ? In a way, song programs are actually a kind of never-ending repeat performance. But, just as we can enjoy the same story by the same comic storyteller every time we hear it, so each live performance of the same song can move us afresh. Mokuhachi has currently achieved a certain level of viewer ratings, but it still has a low level of recognition. Without altering the program’s basic commitment to presenting good songs that bring feelings of cheer to audience and viewers, we want to raise the level of recognition and develop it into a long-running program. Have there been any par ticularly Q memorable occurrences? During the early days of the program, we once had more audience members turn up than we had planned for. When sending out invitations, Mitsuharu Seki Production Depar tment Production Division T V TOK YO Corporation Summer 2012 Business Report for the 2nd Term 3 To Our Stakeholders Approaching our 50th anniversary, we aim to grow as a comprehensive media group that is relevant in the coming 50 years A little over a year has passed since the Great East Japan entertainment. Sales from cash syndication of programs were hit by the discontinued rebroadcasting of Fortune Antique Hunters!—Is It a Trash or Treasure?! and other factors. However, thanks to the favorable performance of existing programs such as Amazing∞World and new programs launched from April 2011 such as Peek the Culture, Seek the Rules , sales reached ¥4,731 million. Additionally, the cinema film Moteki was a major hit, with box office revenue in excess of ¥2,200 million. In the IT-related sector, likewise, revenues from E-Marche Toranomon and other products held up well. In the anime sector, overseas sales, particularly of NARUTO , were encouraging. Nevertheless, revenues were impacted by the depressed state of the domestic market and other factors, so that overall sof tware rights revenue was held to ¥11,545 million. ◦Revenue from time sales: This is revenue from sales of time advertising. Advertisements are used to sponsor specific programs, and the advertisers bear the cost of program production and broadcasting fees. ◦Revenue from spot sales: This is revenue from sales of spot advertising, which is advertising between programs. Spot advertising is limited to the T V TOKYO broadcasting area. ◦Sales from cash syndication of programs: Revenue from the sale of programs to other broadcasting stations. T V TOKYO sells programs to other stations as well as to its network stations. ◦Sof t ware rights revenue: This includes revenue from the business relating to broadcasting peripheral rights, such as video versions and overseas sales and program-based publications and games, and revenue from operations related to IT, anime, and movies. In the mail order-related segment, net sales were good for 7St Live , a joint production by TV TOKYO Direct, Inc., and TV TOKYO that was launched in October. Together with the existing broadcast program Monosuta Move , this boosted performance, allowing TV TOKYO Direct, Inc., to achieve net sales of ¥7,935 million. In the communications satellite broadcasting sector, the number of subscriptions to the dedicated anime channel AT-X passed the 150,000 mark as of the end of December 2011. Net sales of rights to products based on the anime programs Metal Fight Beyblade and Jewelpet also fared well, so that the net sales of AT-X, Inc., at ¥4,632 million, exceeded the record set in the previous fiscal year. All About Household Electric Appliances Satellite broadcasting business Broadcasting revenue was sound in all three sectors: regular programs, including mail order programs, time sales, and spot sales. At the same time, budgets were stretched by initiatives to enhance the repertoire, with the start from October 2011 of regular programs such as All About Household Electric Appliances and Music Travel . As a result, program production expenses increased. Internet and mobile business Although the number of fee-paying subscriptions for existing feature phones continued to decline, favorable net sales were achieved by the B-to-B business, engaged in providing content to terminal manufacturers and other customers, and by the commissioned services business, involved in production and operation of websites and similar services. Elsewhere, new businesses were opened up, for instance through enhanced development of smartphone applications and through content rollout to the expanding social media market.
