Health Tip for the Week:From American Chiropractic Association
Don't Take Arthritis Lying Down
Years ago, doctors hardly ever told rheumatoid arthritis patients to "go take a
hike" or "go for a swim." Arthritis was considered an inherent part of the aging
process and a signal to a patient that it's time to slow down. But not so anymore.
Recent research and clinical findings show that there is much more to life for
arthritis patients than the traditional recommendation of bed rest and drug
therapy.
What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
The word "arthritis" means "joint inflammation" and is often used in reference to
rheumatic diseases. Rheumatic diseases include more than 100 conditions,
including gout, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and many more.
Rheumatoid arthritis is also a rheumatic diseases, affecting about 1 percent of the
U.S. population (about 2.1 million people.)1 Although rheumatoid arthritis often
begins in middle age and is more frequent in the older generation, it can also start
at a young age.
Should Arthritis Patients Exercise?
Exercise is critical in successful arthritis management. It helps maintain healthy
and strong muscles, joint mobility, flexibility, endurance, and helps control
weight. Rest, on the other hand, helps to decrease active joint inflammation, pain,
and fatigue. For best results, arthritis patients need a good balance between the
two: more rest during the active phase of arthritis, and more exercise during
remission.2 During acute systematic flares or local joint flares, patients should
put joints gently through their full range of motion once a day, with periods of
rest. To see how much rest is best during flares, patients should talk to their
health care providers.

Concerns:
 Food has still been high in sodium.
o We will caution the kitchen on the use of salt.
 Entertainment and dining overlap during special events.
o We will try to have the entertainment closer to the end of dinner but try to keep in
mind the desire for residents to not be kept too long after dinner.
 The trash drop-off door needs to remain closed in order to maintain a comfortable
temperature in café and activity area.
o A reminder will go out to all staff.
 Clocks need to be reset.
o If a resident sees that something needs to be done, please fill out a maintenance
request from because we are not always aware of the concern.
 The first aid kit needs to accessible at all times.
o The kit is above the copier in the main office and the resident assistants and
dining room staff have a key to the office if it is locked.
 During buffet style dining, residents should not be eating over the displayed food. It was
suggested that food be pre-portioned.
o Donna will look into getting some equipment to help keep the food protected.
Compliments:
 Menu variety has been wonderful. The food quality has improved greatly.
o Thank you to all of the Dietary staff!
 The maintenance department has done a fantastic job with snow removal. A celebration
dinner in honor of their efforts was suggested.
o We will be scheduling a dinner for them all in the next few weeks.
 The pizza offered at Happy Hour (2/14/14) drew in more residents than usual. It was a
great success.
o We will look at more items that we can offer as appetizers.
Miscellaneous:
 Maple Weekend is March 22-23 and 29-30
o A request was made to have a pancake breakfast / brunch. We have put this on
the calendar for Friday morning March 21st.
