Change Comes to Walstrom Marine

S
ince 1946, the Walstrom sign has hung over the
waterfront at 105 Bay Street in beautiful downtown
Harbor Springs. Some of us can even remember
when it was an electric neon sign and the cruise ships were
docking next door. After 64 years, the sign was taken
down. The site is now the “Boathouse” Yacht Club.

laundry. We are planning for a 2011 opening. We will
remain in our current offices for this summer. Our fuel
dock will also be operating in the ‘business as usual’ mode.
Look for a new 501 Bay St. site plan at our May Opening
day BBQ.
This change means that Walstrom Marine sales operation
needs a new home. We are currently in the design phase of
remodeling our existing “Roe” building to accommodate
our new presentation. One of our goals is to have a heated
indoor show room. We’ve been working with our architects
to create this new sales and service center at this 501 Bay
Street property. This would include a showroom,

Ward Henry Walstrom 1917-2010

The cool spring waters of Little
Traverse Bay may have stilled for a
few moments last Tuesday March
23, as Ward Walstrom Sr.--a man
who helped define life inside the
harbor-- died at the age of 92 in
Asheville, North Carolina.
Walstrom, a former navy
pilot, bought Melching Boat
Works in Harbor Springs in 1946.
The company, which became
Walstrom Marine, helped put
the area on the map as a premier
Lake Michigan boating port of
call.
“Mr. Walstrom’s business
philosophy was ‘take care
of your customer.’ He was
always adamant about giving
his customers good service. After the sale he wanted to
store, dock, and work on his
customer’s boat. That was the
way to make a customer for
life,” said David Lyle, president of Walstrom Marine.
“If he took care of his customer, success would follow. He pioneered heated storage, condos
in Northern Michigan, and aft enclosures on Hatteras Motor Yachts. His service department had a
reputation that they could fix anything. He even had a Michigan State professor working on customer
electronics during the summer,” he added.
Tom Behan, owner of Bay Tennis and Fitness and Pumco Interiors, said Walstrom, a long time
family friend, was the epitome of a good business man. “Ward worked every day, always making sure
boat owners’ loose lines were secured, when no one else was around. The respect that he was given was
earned. He was a kind and trusting man,” Behan said.
Lyle recalled the humor Walstrom brought to the very seasonal nature of their business. “A
customer came up to Mr. Walstrom on a busy July day and told him there was a parking problem
in the Walstrom Marine parking lot. Mr. Walstrom said he knew he had a parking problem. From
September 1st to May 1st there was nobody parking in his lot. The customer begrudgingly walked
away. I still use that reasoning with customers today.”
Stafford Smith, founder of the Stafford’s restaurant group, became a business partner of
Walstrom’s in 1970 when he purchased 50-percent ownership of what is now Stafford’s Pier Restaurant.
“I knew Ward going way, way back,” Smith recalled. “He was a visionary. He purchased the old Pier bar
along with Basil Thompson in the mid-1960s. He had a great plan to re-do the downstairs and upgrade
the old Stein Room which is now the Chart Room.

the Baptist Church on Bay Street across from Marina Village
Condominiums. Although it is presently unpaved, this is a good
place for seasonal slip holders in the basin to park. We encourage
you to park here if you are gone on a cruise for several days.

Madeline Walstrom - New Hire
Madeline has grown up around boats with
her dad. She operated her first boat, a 16’
Wahoo center console when she was 12
and at 15, a 24’ Sea Ray. She started her
own boat cleaning service when she was 13.
She also worked for Ship Shape cleaning
boats. She was in Little Traverse Sailors for
2 years. Madeline has been active in the
Performing Arts appearing in Hello Dolly,
South Pacific, Grease, and Thoroughly
Modern Millie. Madeline is also an avid artist and involved in
the Girl Scouts. She is currently a Junior at Harbor Springs
High School with a 3.5 GPA and in the National Honor Society.
Other interests are soccer, skiing, piano, singing, dancing, and
boating of course. Madeline is a dock attendant at Walstrom
Marine and also helps move boats during the summer months.

On February 8, 2010 the United
States Coast Guard shut down
most of the Loran C towers with
the rest scheduled to go off line
this fall. This shut down is reported to save the government $190
million over 5 years. If you still have a Loran C unit, it’s well past
time to upgrade to some of the latest and greatest GPS navigation
equipment (see innovative new products section)

e are going back to everyone’s favorite, way-upnorth destination-Killarney. This year we are
excited to stay at the newly renovated Sportsman

On August 1, we will depart Harbor Springs and stop at
Detour for our first night. Some of you may depart a day or
two earlier for a stay at Mackinac Island. While at Detour,
Bay Harbor Yacht Club will host an informal cocktail hour.
Then, we will enjoy a culinary masterpiece from local caterer,
Bob Vala, from our new chuck wagon portable trailer. On
Monday we will make our way to Killarney, ONT and the
Sportsman’s Inn. At the Sportsman docking is available
either on the town side of the channel or on George Island
for a more rustic atmosphere. The Sportsman will serve our
food from their world-class kitchen and host our festivities
while in Killarney.
This should be a great time for you and your family to relax,
get away from it all, and enjoy the rustic charm of the North

MRS. HOOVER’S
SOUTHERN STRAIT
I
sat waiting in a small side cabin for the
ferry “Kristen D” to depart for Bois
Blanc Island. I was to meet with a very
distinguished lady on the island. I had met
her once before aboard her boat “Southern
Strait”, a 29’ Tiara docked at our marina in
Cheboygan. Once underway, I overheard
bits and pieces of conversation among the
passengers in the cabin. Gathering from
the conversation they were Islanders, I also
overheard the name Hoover mentioned
with great respect. I felt honored. I was
meeting Miriam Hoover.
Upon arrival at the ferry dock, Mrs.
Hoover’s nephew Michael Leppen met me
in an electric Gem Car for the short trip to
Pointe aux Pins. My excitement grew as I
anticipated our meeting. Taking the main
gravel road west we reached the compound
of Mrs. Hoover where several cottages
neatly lined the shore. There was also a
main dock that appeared to hold a sizable
craft at one time. We walked up the newly
decked walkway to the main cottage and
above the door were the numbers 1908.
Inside I was met by a young man
who Michael introduced to me as Scott.
He helps care for Mrs. Hoover and the
compound. Then I met Miriam Hoover.
She was just as I remembered, stately,
by Ward Walstrom Jr.
elegant, and most gracious. She wore a
deep blue dress trimmed in white with
pretty but modest jewelry. We sat in the
living room overlooking the side yard and
the shore. The cottage was charming and
inviting with the feel of tradition and the
simple pleasures of island life. Pictures
of past years and an assortment of books
were tucked between the open stud walls.
Very soon, Scott served us coffee and
sweet breads on fine china. The bread, fir
beadboard, and pine paneling mingled
together emitting a rich, satisfying aroma.
Miriam began speaking in a soothing,
warm, and gratifying voice of her vivid
past.
Miriam was born in Champion, a
small community in the upper peninsula
of Michigan near Marquette. She grew
up on a farm and learned at an early age
how to survive on very little which proved
useful later in life. When she was 18 years
old Miriam moved to Chicago to attend
nursing school. This was during the
Depression and there were very few jobs
available. Miriam found herself without
money and unable to pay for school. “I
never felt deprived or depressed because
I grew up on a farm,” Mrs. Hoover told
me. Her insistence that I not boast of her is
also attributed to her modest upbringing.
At the time, her sister was working for the
Hoover family taking care of their children
in Glencoe. When she got married, Miriam
took over her job. She began tutoring
the children and when they got older,
took them to Palm Springs, California to
a private school where she lived on the
family ranch and took an interest in horses.
In her early 20’s, Miriam married Earl
Hoover in Glencoe, Illinois. Earl had
graduated with a degree in engineering
from the University of Michigan. His father
operated the Hoover Mason and Phosphate
Business in Tennessee. It was Earl’s uncle
who first started Hoover Vacuum Cleaner,
with the financial aid of Earl’s father. When
a prototype vacuum cleaner was being
checked for its marketability, Earl said,”No
woman is going to take a wrench to raise
or lower this vacuum cleaner.” His father
responded, “We’re not that busy, why don’t
you go to work on it.” So Earl came up with
the first patented foot lever on the vacuum
cleaner and went into business with his
uncle. In later years, Miriam frequently
traveled to England for Hoover Vacuum
Company.

easickness, also known by the
French term as Mal de Mer,
has been well documented in
literature since the 16th century, and
at some point is experienced by over
90% of the population. Some are
more prone to motion sickness than
others, but what causes it and how do
we prevent and treat it?
Our brain processes signals from our
inner ears, eyes, and skin, as well as our muscles and joints,
giving us our equilibrium and ability to move in our three
dimensional surroundings. When these signals become
disrupted (i.e. experiencing the motion of a rocking boat or
visualizing rolling waves, etc.) the balance of these signals is
thrown off and the central nervous system has a hard time
processing the change, causing the classic symptoms of
seasickness.
Once symptoms have begun, there are some physical
maneuvers that can help, though everyone responds differently
to various techniques. Lying down and closing the eyes can be
helpful for some, as is the limitation of head movement (i.e.
moving your head with your torso and limiting rotation of
the head and neck). Getting out on deck to a position on the
vessel where the least motion is felt – a lower deck if applicable
and moving towards the stern – is usually recommended
rather than staying inside the vessel if conditions permit.
Remember to avoid any exposure to noxious fumes or odors.
Try and focus on the horizon or the shore (preferably forward
facing), take deep breaths, and attempt to take your mind off
the symptoms and relax as much as possible.
There are numerous medications that can be used, ranging
from over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benadryl,
Dramamine, and Bonine, to probably the most effective
preventative prescription known as the Scopolamine Patch. The
important point to remember is these medications are much
more effective if taken BEFORE the symptoms have begun.

Boathouse of Harbor Springs Becomes Reality
Walstrom Marine is pleased to announce the transformation of its downtown marina to The Boathouse of Harbor Springs.
Located at 105 Bay Street in the heart of town and reminiscent of the rustic charm and grace of boathouses of a bygone era, The
Boathouse of Harbor Springs is the Great Lakes newest yachting club and destination. Its heritage as a boat works on Northern
Lake Michigan dates back over 100 years. Acquired by the Walstrom family after World War II, it has housed one of America’s finest
full-service marinas for over six decades.
The Boathouse of Harbor Springs is a deposit membership club; a concept introduced in the late l980’s and has become a popular
type of membership. A deposit membership provides the member a license to use the club facilities for a period of 30 years and
beyond. There is no change of ownership, nor are the members required to purchase the club. The present bottomlands lease with
the State remains in effect.
The Boathouse will accommodate 63 wet slips, for boats ranging from 25-100 feet – some covered and protected, others open
with harbor views. In addition, the club will include the East Building clubhouse with catered dining facilities, undercover parking,
Board Room and Boaters Lounge, rest rooms with showers, laundry, shore power, internet access, and pumpout conveniently
located near each slip. With priority maintenance, technical assistance, trip planning, and the ability to haul yachts nearby, The
Boathouse is designed to enhance cruising experience throughout the summer.
“The idea of the creation of a club is something that we have been considering for several years for this location,” comments Ward
Walstrom, Jr. “It just seemed to be a natural evolution of the use of this property. We did not want some mega marina conglomerate
to operate here and change the facility or atmosphere. Many of the members want to keep it the way it is with a few improvements.
With this transformation, the members will become more than just renters; they will become partners in the community, which
benefits our town and our economy.”
Some improvements to The Boathouse have already taken place. Last summer a new roof was installed over the covered slips
next to the Pier. This past fall a new roof with skylights was installed above the main floor including a smooth-paneled interior roof
system. These improvements compliment the existing use of custom wood paneling throughout the intimate interiors. The retail
store “Propellers” will remain at the same location. The Boathouse Grill will also remain at its location with some upgrades and
continue to be open to the public for takeout at the beach.
Some of the Walstrom Marine boaters from the downtown marina will be relocated to the newly constructed yacht basin at 501
Bay Street. Beginning the summer of 2011, Walstrom Marine will relocate its sales to 501 Bay Street. Much needed improvements
will take place to buildings that were constructed in the 1960’s and 70’s.

T
he Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime
Museum is a seasonal museum
tour facility in Mackinaw
City, Michigan. The tour facility is the
decommissioned United States Coast
Guard Cutter MACKINAW WAGB 83,
a 290ft icebreaking vessel. The Icebreaker
Mackinaw Maritime Museum was
established to save the United States Coast
Guard Cutter MACKINAW WAGB 83
after its decommissioning in 2006. The
ship was originally built as part of the war
effort during World War II to meet the
heavy demands placed on the industry for
an increase in production of war materials.
Tremendous increases in the movement of
iron ore, limestone and coal for the nation’s
steel mills were particularly necessary. In
order to keep tonnage on the move into the
winter months an icebreaker was needed.
When commissioned on December 30th,
1944, the Icebreaker MACKINAW was the
most powerful and capable icebreaker in the
world. It is still the standard by which other
icebreakers are measured.
For 62 years the United States Coast Guard
Cutter MACKINAW WAGB 83 continued
to serve the Great Lakes Shipping industry.
The ship, now a museum, is moored in the
harbor in Mackinaw City, Michigan. The
museum has been open for seasonal tours
during the 2007, 2008 and 2009 summers.
Approximately 40,000 guests have toured
the facility to date. The Board of Directors
and staff regard the ship as an American Hero
whose legacy and service to duty contributed
to the successful outcome of World War II .
The Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime
Museum will continue this legacy of duty
and service by initiating an expanded

educational curriculum by constructing a
year-round facility, the Mackinaw Maritime
Education Center, adjacent to the museum
ship. The Education Center will broaden
the current education program and will
provide education and training facilities
for Northern Michigan with a boating and
marine curriculum that encompasses various
hands on learning opportunities for students
of all ages. The Icebreaker Mackinaw
Maritime Museum has an Education
Committee that designed and implemented
hands on marine and boating curriculum.
Due to limited compartmental space and
seasonal access on the ship, the education
program is only available during seasonal
tour operations (May thru October), and is
limited to a maximum instructional group
size of 10 people. Over the past two years
(2008 & 2009), over 1000 children, ages 8 –
14 have experienced the hands on education
program. However, the small confined
rooms on the ship do not allow for large
group seating or large group instruction. The
education capacity is very limited.
The Board of Directors and staff completed a
Vision Program in June 2009 that addresses
the problem of limited space and seasonal
availability. The vision program includes a
20,000 sq. ft. building at the current leased
dock location. The Center will contain a
Virtual Reality Boating Simulation area.

be available to museum visitors. In
addition, a Simulation Theater Space
will allow visitors to experience the

Currently, the Icebreaker Mackinaw
Maritime Museum serves the Straits of
Mackinac region and its residents in 4 major
categories. The museum is open MayOctober for visitors and groups for tour and
educational purposes. Twelve paid employees
and approximately 35 volunteers keep the
museum open seasonally. It also serves as a
weather station, emergency response location
and training facility.
Education: The Icebreaker Mackinaw
Maritime Museum Education Committee has
established a marine and boating curriculum
that encompasses various hands on learning
opportunities for youth and school groups.
Knowledge is obtained through instruction
and hands on learning at the Pulley Station,
Knot Tying Station, Fire Fighting Station,
Flag Station and Communication Station.
Weather Station: The weather station at the
Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum
records and informs area residents and
local media sources about current weather
conditions in the Straits of Mackinac region.
Emergency Response Location: For the
benefit of the Straits of Mackinac region, Radio
Emergency Communications are provided
by Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet
Counties Public Service Communications
Organization (CCECPSCO), call sign
W8AGB, at the Icebreaker Mackinaw
Maritime Museum. In the event of a
disaster, this group will be used as a means
of emergency communication when other
conventional means of communication fail.
Training Facility: In 2008 the Icebreaker
Mackinaw Maritime Museum set the stage
for “Operation Dire Straits”. Representatives
from more than forty Federal, State, Tribal,
county,
and local
government
agencies, as well as
representatives from the
maritime industry and local
volunteers, joined together to work with
homeland security, mass rescue, and pollution
response contingencies. The United States
Coast Guard and other Federal, State, and
Local agencies boarded the ship for training
exercises. The drills help agencies coordinate
emergency response teams in the event of
real disasters.
The goal of the organization is to preserve the
legacy of MACKINAW WAGB 83 and her
crew and provide an educational opportunity
for students of all ages to experience life on
the Great Lakes through hands on learning
and training programs.

he new flagship of the Tiara Yachts Open Series,
the 4300 Open, reflects traditional Tiara style,
craftsmanship, and rugged elegance. Combined
with outstanding features and equipment that make the
4300 capable of handling extended deep water cruising as
well as blue water fishing, the 43 Open represents a time
tested, well proven formula that Tiara has developed to set
new, class leading standards.
This opens up the cabin with natural light and with input
from the fisherman side of the equation, removed portlights

A quick tour of the cabin reveals a portside u-shaped lounge/

News from Rivertown!

I
t’s March 10; we are having another warm sunny
day and the snow is melting. Northern Michigan
saw the lowest precipitation ever recorded for
January and February! However, those of us who enjoy
winter sports were blessed by snow that stayed through
the end of February. March came in like a lamb so it’s
very likely we will see a bit more winter weather before
we start launching boats.
There is a new fuel ship that delivers to the terminal
in Cheboygan. The deeper draft of the 426-foot
ALGOCANADA required dredging in front of the
fuel depot last December. Another new sight in town
is the covered footbridge across the river. It will allow
pedestrians easy access from the city park and ball
fields to downtown. This has the ability to stimulate
downtown businesses by allowing folks using the park
to walk downtown to shop and dine.
The Star Line ferry company had the most extensive
project in our heated facility this winter. The LaSalle is
being fitted with new running gear and new engines. It’s
quite a project and I think her passengers are going to
get to Mackinac Island a little faster from now on.
We continue to freshen up our facility and property. Dead trees have been
removed and we are keeping the fields between our storage buildings tidy and
mowed. We upgraded to a new, quieter, cleaner burning, direct injection diesel
forklift. We hope to have the new boardwalk completed by early summer, to
access the slips at the North end of our facility. We have new dockage customers
who enjoy being close to downtown while being in a relatively quiet dockage
facility. Storage and service were up slightly this year and we are finishing a
couple of engine replacements this spring.
Welcome Back Heather!
If you’ve called our Cheboygan office recently and have been a customer
for at least the past five years, you may have recognized a familiar voice
answering the telephone. In December, Heather Conaway re-joined
the Walstrom Marine family as Office Manager at our Cheboygan
location, after a four-year absence. Heather previously worked at
Walstrom Marine from 1999-2005. Most recently, she worked at the
Cheboygan Middle School as a Title VII aide for 7th and 8th grade
Native American students, and provided tutoring before and after
school. During her break from school last summer, she worked parttime at Walstrom Marine updating customer boat files in preparation
for winter storage billing.

Outside the office Heather is active in the Northland Players theater group, and is a past member of its Board of
Directors. Since joining the group in 2001, she has been cast in four main-stage productions at The Opera House
in Cheboygan, and has had roles in five dinner theater productions. She has served on several of the group’s subcommittees, chaired its Nominating Committee for two years, and was responsible for the group’s newsletter, The
Prompter, for three years. She enjoys kayaking, camping and visiting lighthouses with her husband Doug and son
Evan.

Anchors need to be pulled at a narrow angle to the bottom to allow the flukes to
catch, dig in and become set. Once you’ve paid out the right amount of line, set
the anchor by securing the line to the bow cleat and drifting or slowly reversing
power downwind, with the bow facing the anchor, until you take up the slack.
Add a small amount of steady, reverse power until the anchor digs in and holds.
