Our rapid deployment approach allows client access to
certain capabilities more rapidly than using traditional
“waterfall” development approaches. Because we iteratively
refine the system throughout development, end users are
allowed to experience the developing system. In this way,
business and technical issues are addressed during, not
after, development, which helps ensure that all objectives are
met and user expectations are more thoroughly satisfied.

Date
Jan. 2010 — Feb. 2011
Business requirement
A world-leading stock exchange with 8,000 listed securities composed of equities and
derivatives exchanges across the U.S. and Europe had many internal data sources and
needed an aggregation service that provided a unified interface to access them.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services recommended and then built a flexible access service to allow
the client applications to retrieve market data and other information through a simple
programmatic interface. This application, using the Spring and RESTEasy framework,
provided an HTTP interface for the client’s applications.

By delivering easy retrieval of messages sent through the exchange’s CRM system, we sped
up the development of add-on applications, such as a new client portal. Currently, all of the
client’s applications (Drupal based) can use the same interface to access various data sources
efficiently. The interface provides data from many different sources, including real-time
market data from both U.S. and EU sources.

A media company with several magazine properties and a website property is focused on
revenue through advertising sales, including managing customer interactions, RFPs and sales
forecasting. The existing system used to do this was based on old technology and was not
easily accessible by the sales staff. A sales operations gatekeeper is required to perform many
sales forecasting and pipeline management tasks. The customer needed a CRM system that
would help enable it to manage sales activities, make it easier for the sales team to directly
access client and pipeline data, and have a platform that could grow with the business.

A world leading asset manager
Future state assessment
Pennsylvania, USA
Date
Oct. 2010 —
 Jan. 2011
Business requirement
One of the world’s largest asset managers and top mutual fund providers recognized the
need to upgrade its program to attain a next-generation global fund accounting (NGGFA)
platform that can meet requirements for the next 15-plus years. The client sought to confirm
whether SunGard’s Asset Arena Investment Accounting system, which it had used in the U.S.
in outdated fashion, could fulfill the NGGFA requirements and be best leveraged to meet its
objectives of minimizing risk, operating globally and achieving scale.
Approach
The client engaged SunGard Consulting Services in an intensive 12-week, four-phase
assessment project: Phase 0: Pre-launch; Phase I: Current state analysis; Phase II: Future state
design; Phase III: Migration/road map planning. Through a joint project team, we provided
project management and business analysis, while the SunGard Asset Management segment
provided investment accounting/system-related subject matter expertise. Deliverables
provided an evaluation of the client’s current fund accounting operations across more than
20 operating units and recommendations for the future state operating model. Both technical
and functional work streams generated assessment recommendations and road maps.
SunGard Consulting Services platform capabilities related to BPM (through IPP), exception
management, global (including Australia fund market) accounting, and strategic data
extraction/reporting were among the tenets of the recommended new elements for the client.
The development of central utilities and governance models (e.g., for pricing and security
reference master data) and sponsorship of target priority core system enhancements were
also key recommendation areas.

Mar. 2011— Aug. 2012 (and ongoing through Dec. 2013)
Business requirement
A large, premier asset management firm decided, based on an earlier assessment with
SunGard Consulting Services, to consolidate its funds onto a single accounting platform,
migrating away from an in-house legacy system where its retail assets resided. This conversion
initiative is a complex, multi-work stream, three-year program requiring planning and
execution across functional and technical delivery areas, including system development
and configuration, fund conversion planning, operational readiness, and data mapping
and integration to achieve future strategic goals.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services joined the program as a product and solution partner along
with two other vendors and up to nearly 300 client in-house staff, actively participating in
year-one planning agenda and year-two execution activities, with intensive preparation for
fund conversion processes. We worked with stakeholders to identify product gaps and
enhancements and drove delivery of product capabilities to meet aggressive business needs,
including accelerated dates. We provided technical expertise and resources to deploy, test
and support upgraded software.
We offered ongoing consultation and specific recommendations related to future state
architecture/technical configurations, including performance tuning tips. Our team leveraged
experience with other clients, conversions and accounting data to recommend and implement
methodologies for conversion, training and data mapping/management that help improve
efficiencies and reduce risks.

The client’s requirements and process were not well defined for trading and clearing CDS
using CME as a centralized counterparty (CCP). Certain aspects of the CME CDS clearing
process were under development through Q2 2010 (i.e., trade affirmation platform and
credit/limit checks). The client required the ability to highlight the differences from its futures
clearing process to perform a gap analysis on its existing clearing infrastructure.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services delivered the project using the ATLAS project management
methodology to develop requirements in the following sequence: We developed a high-level
flow diagram documenting aspects of the CDS trade life cycle early in the project to serve
as a function map and TOC. We then provided detailed examples of margin calculations,
cash flows, credit and succession event calculations. We infused our team with GMI and
CME subject matter expertise to validate, clarify and obtain implementation-level detail for
requirements. We held regularly scheduled workshops to iteratively validate flow diagram
and requirements documentation to converge on an accurate and detailed document to
help meet the client’s specific objectives.

Business requirement
Define the Securities Data Model and requirements for a solution to support new aggregated
securities reporting regulations that involved consolidating securities reference data and
holdings from across all subsidiaries from many data sources. This requirement presented
a challenge to the client, as it was conducting its consolidation process manually at the time.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services defined the Securities Data Model, as well as the technical and
operational requirements, and profiled current platforms, data sources and manual process
to satisfy the data aggregation requirements. We also conducted a gap analysis for each
platform/source versus requirements.
We defined alternative approaches to meet the regulatory requirements, including evaluating
an external vendor solution versus an internally developed solution based on enhancing an
existing data warehouse. We assessed each scenario, including pros and cons, impacts and
costs, and provided the client with a strategy and road map to move forward and meet its
regulatory obligations.

We gathered information from both IT and the business units IT supports. As part of the

Business requirement
Develop the quality assurance (QA) and testing management strategy for a trading analytics

supports trading risk, address known risk management gaps and meet emerging regulatory
requirements. Business requirements were being defined through multiple work streams,
with each stream having its own requirements team.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services developed a QA and testing framework and methodology
that aligned with overall program strategies and structure. We worked with representatives
from the project streams and the program level (e.g., requirements manager, program
manager, development leads) to define the program QA strategy. Of particular note in
this engagement was the need to define a framework to accommodate a system delivery
model that differed significantly from the bank’s traditional model (“hybrid iterative” versus
“waterfall”). The QA manager also guided a group of testing and QA resources in selecting
and implementing a test management tool set and in ensuring this group was properly
applying the QA strategy in the development of detailed test plans and test cases. We provided
the program with a comprehensive testing strategy that addressed the needs and constraints
of various program participants (business and IT groups) and that fit the new delivery model
the program had adopted.

the framework for requirements definition, alignment, review and approval. The framework
articulated roles and responsibilities, guidelines/rules and procedures for all parties involved
in developing requirements. Of particular note in this engagement was the need to define
a governance framework to accommodate a system delivery model that differed significantly
from the bank’s traditional model (“hybrid iterative” versus “waterfall”). The requirements
manager was also responsible for hiring and staffing the requirements team, selecting the
tool to manage requirements and coordinating interaction between groups to help ensure
effective execution of their responsibilities.

Business requirement
Develop a Trading Risk Data Model for a capital markets client spanning multiple business lines.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services developed the Trading Risk Data Model based on input
across eight lines of business (LOBs) and IT stakeholder groups. The data model integrated
high-level data requirements needed across all LOBs to support the development of the
trading risk program and identified key data requirements, data subject areas, data entities,
dependencies and key data flows across trading risk functions into an organized and visual
set of data requirements using industry-standard methods. The solution modeled these
data subject areas: organization, legal entities, market data, asset master, trades/positions,
valuation, P&L and attribution, valuation adjustments, liquidity and funding, and risk
measurements.

The solution provided business experts and IT with a common visual model/framework
that could be understood and validated by both groups, as well as setting the foundation
for the risk platform by standardizing the data requirements for key risk functions and asset
classes for the overall program. This assisted in identifying a single source of data across
LOBs and, moving forward, allows the client to reduce overall technology ownership costs,
lower operational costs and more easily accommodate business changes as requested.

Assist in the implementation of a global limits monitoring framework to align control
processes and trading risk policies to the client’s risk tolerance and trading desk strategies.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services immediately implemented changes stemming from the new
framework that were urgently required by the business. We established a clear and consistent
limit structure and reorganized, rewrote and implemented 28 market risk policies across
various business lines comprising FX, credit, equity, interest rates and global commodities
trading businesses.
We updated all impacted downstream reports and dashboards to consume data provided in
the new risk reports, established limits consistent with board-approved trading risk tolerance
policies and trading desk strategies, and helped enable early warning notifications based on
predetermined thresholds to provide the front office the capability to stay within the client’s
defined limits and risk tolerance. This provided the bank with a clear limit structure for trading
risk consistent with board-approved trading risk appetite policies and trading desk strategies.
It also aligned trading risk limit control processes, policies and structure with the bank’s
trading risk tolerance and trading desk strategies and helped ensure that trading limits were
more easily measured, monitored and enforced.

Approach
A small, highly experienced team of SunGard Consulting Services business analysts and
senior technical architects conducted a focused current state analysis across the end-to-end
trade life cycle. Using a structured information gathering process, our team quickly identified
all the steps in the trade life cycle and developed business requirements for the target
operating model. We then held short, focused workshops with key stakeholders in operations,

Dec. 2008
Business requirement
Document all business processes associated with Disney’s global treasury management
function in preparation for the implementation and integration of SunGard’s AvantGard
Quantum and Risk. The scope of the project included documenting the business processes
required for the life cycle of all instruments managed by the treasury organization, including
foreign exchange, interest rate risk management, long-term debt issuance, short-term
debt, short-term investments, equities, commodities and credit default swaps. Process
documentation included process initiation conditions and/or events, process steps, actor
roles by type and level, technology employed (platforms, applications, end-user tools)
and the specific output created by the process. Additionally, the process documentation
included a discussion of the purpose for the process, the inputs/preconditions for the
process, the desired output, business process risks identified and the controls/process
constraints deployed to resolve or mitigate the risks.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services used an instrument silo approach to document the global
treasury processes due to the limited presence of shared services and business resources.
Our team used subject matter expert interviews and observations to create a core process
diagram (Level 1 or L-1) landscape that included all of the business processes required for the
life cycle of each instrument. Each process document included the initiating event(s) or
circumstances, the process steps, the primary role or organizational group responsible for the
process, the technology applications used to accomplish the process goal and the process
output. Once the core processes were determined, each process was decomposed into the
next level (L-2) of detail, including the use of “swim-lanes” to provide greater detail between
process actors. In cases where the processes were intricate, additional detail was derived by
decomposing processes further (to L-3 and L-4 levels of complexity.)
In addition to the business process diagrams, we were responsible for documenting each
process flow as a narrative. These process narratives were prefaced with process goals,
process preconditions and expected process output. The written process descriptions
delineated system process action steps from manual action steps. The narratives were
supplemented with process risks and the process controls/constraints used to eliminate
or mitigate them.

Client requirements and processes were not well defined for trading and clearing CDS using
CME as a centralized counterparty (CCP). Certain aspects of the CME CDS clearing process
were under development through Q2 2010 (i.e., Trade Affirmation Platform and Credit/Limit
Checks). The client wanted to highlight differences from the futures clearing process to
perform a gap analysis on its existing clearing infrastructure.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services delivered the project using the Atlas project management
methodology to develop requirements in the following sequence. We developed a high-level
flow diagram documenting aspects of the CDS trade life cycle early in the project to serve
as a function map and TOC. We also provided detailed examples of margin calculations,
cash flows, credit and succession event calculations. Our team consisted of SunGard GMI
and CME subject matter expertise to validate, clarify and obtain implementation-level detail
for requirements. We held regularly scheduled workshops to iteratively validate flow diagram
and requirements documentation to converge on an accurate and detailed document and

As a result, the client can reasonably estimate P&L on a ‘day after’ basis versus the former
process that involved hearing from independent system owners, which, in some cases, took
about 13 days. The client was able to view several multimillion-dollar deals that were manually
maintained and not getting accounted in P&L. Additionally, the process improved the quality
of the P&L reporting by bringing numbers closer to the accounting numbers within
acceptable limits (5 to 10 million).

A major global energy company wanted to help ensure its preparedness for impending
Dodd-Frank regulations related to its commodities trading and marketing business. The
company handles multiple energy-related commodities, including crude oil, refined products,
natural gas and power. SunGard Consulting Services was engaged to identify the impacts,
determine the complexity of required changes and develop a road map to help the client
become compliant with Dodd-Frank regulations.
Approach
Our team:
››Reviewed and prioritized notices of proposed rulemakings from the CFTC
››Evaluated individual requirements for IT and/or business process impacts
››Assessed the clarity of each requirement and determined the priority
››Reviewed all essential applications for the IT impacts
››Quantified the scale of each impact for effort, duration and cost
››Categorized the requirements and impacts into a road map toward regulation compliance
››Developed a business benefits base to address the gaps
››Moved forward with high-priority impacts with the least regret spend (position limits, data
definition and system mapping).
We successfully identified hundreds of relevant Dodd-Frank requirements with IT and/or
business process impacts and pinpointed 300+ individual IT system impacts identified from
approximately 100 requirements. Our team built a structural framework related to a reporting
repository, remediated data structural gaps related to reporting records and initially focused
on position limits by commodity as a building block. Additionally, we created a plan of action
to focus on the data needed for the swap data repository by building out a data dictionary
and analyzing what was needed for the master data and intra-day/real-time requirements.

Implementing a single gas platform leveraging ETRM
Houston, TX
Date
Mar. 2010 — Dec. 2011
Business requirement
One of the largest wholesale energy marketers and traders in North America wanted to
consolidate physical gas processes to a single Endur platform. Previously the physical gas
trades were booked in Endur but were then interfaced to Nucleus to perform the rest of the
ETRM processes (scheduling, confirmation, settlement and accounting). The client needed
ETRM, Endur and IT delivery expertise for the largest part of its initiative. With one of the
largest physical gas implementations ever, the client was looking for front-to-back automation
of different ETRM processes.
Approach
The client engaged SunGard Consulting Services as a strategic supplier to implement this
solution with Endur and all interfacing systems. We managed a significant portion of the
program by providing the team with front-, middle- and back-office ETRM/Endur subject
matter experts to drive the design and testing in all functional areas, including deal modeling,
scheduling, confirmation, invoicing, risk, credit and accounting. We led the development,
infrastructure, performance, build and release on Endur and all integrated systems, including
data warehouse solutions, Endur interfaces with external systems including SAP, EasyLink,
and eConfirm, exchange systems, and contract management systems. We helped ensure a
high degree of process automation on all front-, middle- and back-office areas. Additionally,
we built three data warehousing solutions for market risk, credit risk and accounting to provide
high-performing and scalable reporting/analytics solutions for the business. The project team
was recognized for its ability to successfully deliver large ETRM projects and its expertise
in ETRM processes, Endur, data warehousing and system integration. As one of the largest

Business requirement
A major U.S. electric utility company engaged SunGard Consulting Services to implement a
custom-developed ETRM, Phoenix, for its deregulated and regulated commodity trading
business units. The Phoenix deal capture system provides one of the client’s subsidiary
marketing business units and its own regulated trading operations with the ability to capture
the terms of trades between the client and its counterparties. The client decided to phase out
its legacy system through periodic releases of the new Phoenix system beginning in 2008 and
ending in 2010. The Phoenix system is required to interface with several key systems to receive
and transmit a variety of transactional information, including bilateral gas and power trades,
ISO generation and load deals, financial deals, power transmission and scheduling transactions,
market pricing and meter data, ISO settlement transactions and accounting GL transactions.
Approach
Our project team followed SunGard Consulting Services’ systems development life cycle
(SDLC) methodology that includes project initiation; requirements elaboration; analysis and
design; development and unit testing; quality assurance testing and user acceptance testing;
implementation and post-implementation support. Through five releases over the past two

Feb. 2006 — Apr. 2009
Business requirement
A leading U.S. gas utility company wanted assistance with the implementation of its ETRM and
business process changes. The client wished to implement the vanilla version of third-party
software with minimum customizations. It was willing to change business processes to adjust
to the software instead of customizing the software for current business processes.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services performed a gap analysis of existing business processes
and third-party software to understand the differences. We used the client’s own priorities
to develop an approach that required limited customizations and improved business
process efficiencies. We successfully managed the implementation, including documenting
new business processes and hands-on user training. Post implementation, management
was able to define additional business controls and increased visibility of daily operations.
Additionally, we identified interface opportunities to SAP and retail systems that were
subsequently implemented.

Business requirement
A leading U.S. gas utility company faced inefficiencies and data quality issues due to the
manual and paper-intensive processes it employed and wanted to move data from its ETRM
system to its enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services automated the business process used to transfer data between
the ETRM system and the ERP system. The project team added user-controlled releasing
mechanisms to the ETRM system to help enable the business to manage the flow of data
between the two systems. Additionally, we created reconciliation reports for ongoing verification.
The interface reduced the manual dependencies previously required to flow data between
the two systems and reduced the amount of time required to have data posted in the ERP
system, thus improving operational efficiencies and speeding up responsiveness. As a result,
the interface automated account receivable and account payable transactions, which
eliminated the paperwork to post journal and payment entries.

ability to calculate and analyze operational and financial results and perform reliable P&L/
position/risk management across front-, middle- and back-office systems. The client’s
executive management also needed to improve the business capability from a current state of
static transaction reporting using numerous spreadsheets to an interactive solution delivering
results through a single, self-service-oriented business intelligence portal.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services engaged the front-, middle- and back-offices in creating a
common view of business information that would drive day-to-day operations and support
business operational and executive management needs, analytical needs and decision

A regulated electric distribution and transmission business that provides reliable electricity
delivery to consumers wanted to migrate its user base to an advanced measurement
platform to lower the cost of meter readings and provide customers with near-real-time
data analysis and alerting capabilities. The platform provided its clients and energy suppliers
with immediate data availability and the ability to remotely manage energy consumption
and outage information. SunGard Consulting Services was charged with the development
and automation of routine information delivery processes to support third-party entities such
as ERCOT, Smart Meter Texas Portal (SMT) and Retail Electric Providers (REPs).
Approach
We provided support and validation of the Advanced Metering System Release 3 (AMS R3)
enterprise data warehouse model, mappings and reports. In addition, we supported data
investigations and corrections to help ensure that the data being provided both internally
and externally was accurate, timely and complete.
We successfully completed the development and automation of data extraction and delivery
routines for internal and third-party data consumers, including core reports critical to the
client’s business. Additionally, we completed validation of the AMS R3 models and mappings,
ensuring completeness and accuracy, as well as multiple data correction projects to support

Business requirement
A leading retail electric provider providing electricity plans for residential and commercial
customers in Texas (ERCOT) as well as several other U.S. markets had underlying data quality
issues within several key systems. A complete set of data from the market was available and
could be compared with the client’s systems to identify data quality problems. SunGard
Consulting Services was engaged to design and implement a custom solution to help
compare these sources and identify specific issues to address.
Approach
Our team used the ERCOT Esi Id extract. “727 Extract” is the specific name of the dataset
used from ERCOT, a term that companies within the ERCOT market considering a market
reconciliation system/project should be familiar with to provide a comparison point for the
client’s internal data sources.

Multiple systems (two billing systems as well as a load forecasting system) were compared
daily or on demand against the ERCOT set of data. ESI Id population sets, attributes and
usage data were compared and discrepancies reported. Extensive configuration allowed
tolerances to be set on how quickly data flowed into and through each system before being
reported as a variance. We held training sessions to bring the client’s development staff
up to speed on the Microsoft Silverlight platform.

Our solution successfully found hundreds of billing errors in one day alone totaling more
than $100K. Additionally, the system also pointed out fundamental flaws in several extract,

A retail electric provider
Increasing data efficiencies
Category

Location

Date
Feb. 2010 — Feb. 2011
Business requirement
A retail electric provider (REP) in the Texas ERCOT market was spending several days at the
beginning of each month pulling together wholesale cost information to produce a monthly
forecast. The client then spent significantly more time maintaining this spreadsheet-based
solution. Data issues and human errors in the calculations were extremely common. In addition,
the client had issues forecasting revenues and aligning them with costs because it was using
a production-month methodology rather than a calendar month to track revenue.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services first conducted a road map exercise to ascertain the current
state and identify a path forward that addressed the largest issues. Our solution included
automating the import and consolidation of all the various cost components of the REP,
providing automated forecasts of costs that did not yet exist and allowing changes to cost
numbers that would recalculate the wholesale cost position on the fly for scenario-based
analysis. The resulting reports were available at varying levels of detail, from different market
zones and customer entities all the way up to an aggregated position of the REP. A revenue
engine and associated front-end graphical user interface (GUI) application were developed
that pulled in usage and rate data from many different sources (i.e., actual bills, interval usage
data, smart meter data, profiled scalar data, historical usage, and load profile’s from ERCOT)
to produce a bottom-up approach to revenue. Revenue was calculated for every individual
customer meter every day using a methodology based on using the “best available” data
at that time.
Our final solution drastically reduced the amount of effort required by the client to produce cost
and revenue reports. It removed all human errors from the cost calculations and helped improve
their accuracy because all forecasted calculations were done at the lowest granularity possible
(i.e., hourly intervals instead of daily). The revenue portion of the application provided data
throughout the month rather than during month-end close only and allowed direct comparison
of the volumes and revenue to their cost position due to the calendar month approach. The
client was able to completely revamp and simplify the entire business process around booking
revenue to take advantage of this new system. As a result, the company’s overall data quality
improved dramatically because the quality of the cost/revenue reports was directly correlated
to the quality of the data imported from its other systems.

SunGard Consulting Services first performed a five-week road map exercise to determine
high-level requirements and a project approach. We then managed the project to design and
developed a single bespoke system to address all three problems. Our team followed the
client’s waterfall methodology and included business requirements, technical design and

Location
Mexico City, Mexico
Date
Jun. 2010 — Jan. 2011
Business requirement
The second largest state-owned electric company in Mexico faced issues with the accuracy of
its risk reporting. The client is a midstream operator. Its Gas Operations team was responsible
for purchasing gas (natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs) and liquefied natural gas (LNGs,
mainly ethane, propane and butane) from PEMEX and delivering to its network of power
plants. Each of its five regions had its own manual processes, controls and report formats,
which created errors and misinformation at the regional level, leading to risk. The situation
made it difficult to consolidate the report for senior executives and the finance team. The
client wanted to centralize its gas operations by unifying all five regions into the Gas
Operations business unit’s system. In addition, the client needed to move away from its
historic manual process (spreadsheets) and toward an automated gas operations system that
would allow the company to have standardized reporting capabilities and manage
transportation and pricing more efficiently.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services gathered all necessary business requirements from each region
to customize the Aligne software to the client’s gas operations needs. All reports had BI
Publisher report capabilities and we provided appropriate training for Gas Operations
personnel. Aligne training was given on how to use Aligne Gas Ops and the benefits of
having one system. We provided bilingual support with industry knowledge to assist in
gathering business requirements, developing training materials and building the customer
relationship. Software was implemented in January 2011 but was in the testing phase until
June. Currently, the Central Region is using the Aligne product. When rolled out, the new
software will help the client significantly reduce accuracy issues around its risk reporting.

that consistently appear on senior management’s radar, distinguishing process risks from
business risks, helping participants understand the “language of risk,” and identifying controls
and metrics to more efficiently measure and manage business processes.
Approach
We identified key processes and developed process maps for each functional business area,
compiling a risk register for each functional business area to identify the risks that impact key
processes, correlating high-priority risks to the impacted areas within the process maps, and
evaluating each identified risk based on tangible and intangible impacts to compile a ranked

One of the largest primary marketers of natural gas production in North America needed to
replace a 10-year-old data warehouse that was failing due to infrastructure, excessive support
license costs and the embedding of extensive business logic. The client experienced project
setbacks due to conflicts between multiple small firm contractors, major project schedule
overruns, including $600K in overtime charges, technical challenges, poor quality and unmet
business requirements. Additionally, it needed a major trading system upgrade along with
analytical enhancements, as MS Excel was the primary tool.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services’ project team held a structured intervention of the current state
of the project that crossed all project areas and assessed staffing, scheduling, technology,
testing and requirements. We implemented various changes in the delivery management
approach, collaborative communications with the client and stronger testing efforts. We also
determined that single-vendor authority and accountability would belong to SunGard
Consulting Services for the remainder of the project.
We successfully set new standards for proactive and open communications with the client

The largest generation provider in the Texas energy market needed an application built to
verify the veracity of settlements provided by ERCOT. This application would use the client’s
internal data to create a “shadow” settlement that could be compared to the ISO’s settlement
at all levels of aggregation, providing the client with the visibility necessary to drill down into
a charge type and see where any discrepancies with the ISO exist — leading to the potential
recovery of very large sums of money. The application would provide the following functionality:
››Shadows all applicable ERCOT nodal charge types
››Tolerance band configuration
››Side-by-side comparisons with drill-down to the interval level
››Invoice and statement workflow
››Automated journal entry to PeopleSoft
››User dashboard
››Abstracted charge type and user maintenance, allowing the business to handle updates

Business requirement
In response to market conditions, a major insurance provider in South Africa needed a
product delivery strategy to define and implement business processes and systems to
administer a tiered umbrella product suite that catered to the needs of small, medium and
large-size employers. The client’s existing application ecosystem is a complex patchwork
of multiple vendor and in-house applications. The client’s existing operations/administration
solution is largely manual with significant variation in execution across the team.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services conducted an eight-week strategy and analysis phase to assess
the current state and recommend a target state solution. We leveraged an agile development
methodology to implement the target state solution that streamlines the Compass
implementation of the tiered umbrella product and introduces SunGard’s Infinity Process
Platform (IPP) for application integration/workflow orchestration. Additionally, we leveraged
additional consulting capabilities, such as project management, solution architecture,
business process management, information management and test planning/execution.
We applied a new collaborative engagement model that capitalized on synergies between
product development (iWorks) and SunGard Consulting Services. Our team successfully
streamlined the product configuration/implementation on Compass, implemented an external
user-facing portal to support the payroll function, integrated IPP to orchestrate business
processes such as new business installation and scanning/indexing, introduced an operational
data store to decouple reporting from the production database and applied the agile
methodology for a geographically distributed team (domestic U.S., South Africa and offshore).

Data extract work stream
Location
Delaware, USA
Date
Nov. 2009 — Present
Business requirement
The client conducts business in most parts of the world and has multiple lines of business
in each of the countries in which it operates. Its current actuarial valuation and projection
systems include different vendor systems, thousands of spreadsheets with varying degrees
of controls, extensive manual intervention, and a lack of consistency between regions and
among countries within the same regions. The client expected to be divested from its parent
company in 2010 or 2011 through an IPO or direct sale. Given the current state of its systems,
the client needed to modernize its finance and actuarial functions to support that divestiture.
A cornerstone of this strategy is converting the client’s current actuarial valuation and projection
systems to a standardized platform.

Category
To accomplish this goal and support a credible IPO valuation, the client elected to use
SunGard’s Prophet Professional and Prophet Enterprise products. This would equip the client’s
actuaries with the necessary tools and models to perform credible and consistent valuations
and projections for all of its product lines across all the countries in which it does business.
Approach
Corporate finance
As part of the overall Prophet Professional and Prophet Enterprise implementation, SunGard
Consulting Services was tasked with the responsibility for extracting data from policy
administration source systems, transforming that data into a useable format (known as
Model-Point files), and then loading that data into Prophet for use in actuarial models. These
models will directly support the client’s valuation and projection requirements, with scope as
defined in the program’s actuarial work stream. We are currently providing data extract
analysis, design, implementation and testing services.
Technologies

The Data Extract project is currently in the Analysis Phase. In the project’s Execution Phase, we
will be producing extract, transform and load (ETL) processes, which will leverage the existing
extract files from policy administration systems in the various countries. These ETL processes
will take as input one extract, or set of extracts, per administration system and produce as
output one Model-Point file per product for subsequent import into Prophet, thereby integrating
the disparate administration systems into a consistent and centralized actuarial valuation and
projection platform.

Creating a benefits access portal to gain efficiencies
Location
Illinois, USA
Date
May 2010 — Present
Business requirement
A pensions and health benefits organization engaged SunGard Consulting Services to design,
construct and implement a pension and health benefits portal to manage all employee data
and all business rules associated with employment and integrates with a SunGard pension
record-keeping system as well as a third-party health management system.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services participated in and led the full systems development life cycle
of the project. The final product focused on providing an employee benefits management
system that seamlessly interfaces with legacy systems for pension record keeping and health
benefits. The system provides employees and their plan sponsors one place to manage all
benefits. Our solution provided the client with a one-stop shop for all benefits administration.
With seamless integration to legacy applications, the application eliminated the need for dual
and triple entry into multiple systems, making it simple for employees and plan sponsors to
enroll in their benefits.

Date
May 2009 — Jun. 2010
Business requirement
The client needed to convert GDP text files that drive PDS Web functionality to ICF text files
that drive OOL and implement additional functionality that OOL offers, including human resource
information system (HRIS) reports, single sign on, Quicken, OOL Smartforms and e-mail
notifications. Also included in this project was a plan to convert the OmniVoice Custom.cs
scripts that leveraged GDP keywords and replace them with the ICF/OOL equivalent.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services developed a methodology to map the GDP keywords to the ICF
equivalent. These documents were discussed with the client upon completion to make sure
its team understood how the GDP keyword worked in the PDS environment. In addition to
the plan conversion work effort, our team implemented deliverables outlined in the scope
document to include functions listed above.

Plan sponsor web portal design
Category
Retirement services, custom application development
Location
Minnesota, USA
Date
Jun. 2009 — Jul. 2009
Business requirement
Design a new technical platform to support the plan sponsor business that is: A) Flexible to
adapt to changing business needs of the client and its plan sponsors; B) Scalable to support
a comprehensive portal strategy to service plan sponsors and all their constituents (including
plan administrators, trustees, participants, third-party advisers, affiliated partners, and the
client’s support and servicing); C) Promotes cost-effective shared services between the plan
sponsor portal, other constituent portals and the client’s customer servicing and support
roles; and D) Includes at a minimum all current-state functionality in its first iteration and
provides a future-state road map aligned with the business’ strategic plan, including technical
architecture migration to support the business requirements.
Approach
SunGard Consulting Services established a vision for providing each retirement business role
with a distinctive desktop supporting the capabilities required by the respective roles.
To move from vision to design, the team defined all the business processes, roles and
capabilities that would be relevant to the project’s scope and the plan sponsor role.
The team formulated an elegant portal design to accommodate the capabilities that the
plan sponsors could use, the entities/roles they could interact with, and the appropriate
hierarchical structure required to allow different, based permission views.
To provide real-world context for the design, the team built simulations around two diverse
and demanding business processes that would exercise the plan sponsor portal. The two
scenarios were designed to show how interaction between the plan sponsor and the other
roles would occur, the control mechanisms that coordinate the interactions, the process
screens the plan sponsor would encounter, and the various portal application screens
and view options the plan sponsor would require. These screens included the plan sponsor
dashboard, dashboard metric and activity drill-down capabilities, process initiation and
action screens, user-defined alert settings, and alert-based communication/interaction.
Parallel to the portal vision and simulation activity, the team completed an architectural
review and future state technical architecture design, a technical gap analysis and
an implementation road map that aligned with the Securian strategic business plan.

Creating a robust network to improve customer experience
Location

2011 — 2012
Business requirement
The client outlined a future state vision that includes a consistent Web portal experience both
for its wealth management (WM) and institutional clients. This strategy means that the data
hub that will power the Web portal needs to accommodate client portfolio data from multiple
books and records applications for different client account types. To solve these challenges,
SunGard Consulting Services’ project team proposed a preliminary architecture hypothesis to
leverage a SunGard Global Data Store (GDS) data warehouse solution as the foundation data
hub. The client agreed to engage in a design phase to complete analysis, create the blueprint
and prove that this approach is the best fit for its strategy.
Approach
We formed a joint team to create a design vision for the new solution. The core team
consisted of resources from Consulting Services, WM Product Management and WM
Architecture Design. The design approach created by this team is based on nightly and
intra-day (every 45 minutes) extracts from AddVantage Trust Accounting system to the
GDS data warehouse that acts as the data hub for the custom Web portal. The architecture
of the client portal solution includes ASP/.NET/Oracle/ETL/GDS. The portal will be accessed
by multiple Web browsers and with the iPad mobile platform.

The result is a leading-edge custom Web portal solution powered by SunGard’s GDS data
warehouse. Since GDS is designed to encompass books and records data from both
AddVantage and Global Plus Trust Accounting systems (and potentially other competing
vendor systems), this solution is well positioned to provide SunGard a new source of revenue
by allowing all current and new clients of both AddVantage and Global Plus (a combined
current pool of more than 100 customers) with the opportunity to implement personalized

The wealth management division of a major financial services
holding company
Streamlining processes and enabling transparency
Category
Client onboarding
Location
Kansas City, MO
Date
Mar. 2010 — Nov. 2010
Business requirement
The wealth management division of a major financial services holding company, engaged
SunGard Consulting Services to streamline its client on-boarding process, including account
opening and asset marshalling. A growing business created the need for a scalable solution
to maintain and improve customer service and increase efficiencies. Traditional paper-based
processing limited the transparency of the highly collaborative process, making it difficult to
provide management information for tracking, control and auditing.
Approach
Approach: We analyzed the client onboarding process and created a future state vision
of a completely electronic process. The new process was implemented using SunGard’s
BPM technology Infinity Process Platform and features intelligent Web-based forms,
system‑managed work lists, state-of-the-art document management and system integration
into SunGard’s Global Plus. Notifications, manager dashboards and reports were created
to help track and manage the onboarding process end to end, and to seamlessly provide
detailed audit information. Our global delivery team was used to constantly adapt and
improve the solution based on changing customer requirements and regulatory needs.
We successfully delivered a more efficient solution that increased the quality of data, reduced
roundtrips between front-, middle- and back-office, eliminated physical paper and reduced
multiple data entries. As a result, the solution helps enable transparency by providing real-time
insight into the status of current and past processing for managers and auditors.
