Will the potential next

please raise a fin?
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Inland Fisheries
biologists tagged and stocked
20,000 6-inch largemouth bass
the week of November 14 as part
of an ongoing effort to produce a
new world record.
Operation World Record (OWR) evolved as a result
of the Budweiser ShareLunker
program. Now in its 20th year,
the ShareLunker program has
accepted 391 largemouth bass
donated by anglers and used
them for spawning in an effort to
increase the number and size of
trophy largemouth bass caught in
Texas.
But until OWR, the
program was based mostly on
faith and common sense, which
hold that bigger-than-average
fish stand a better-than-average
chance of producing offspring
that will also grow large. Like
cattle or deer, fish need three
things to reach their maximum
growth potential: good genetics,
good nutrition and plenty of time
to grow.
Recent advances in the
ability to detect genetic differences among fish are expected to
enable scientists to confirm their
belief that big fish have genes
that make it possible for them
to grow bigger, and that these
genes can be passed on to their
offspring.
After extracting DNA from
ShareLunker tissue samples,
TPWD geneticist Dijar LutzCarrillo looks for short repetitive
sequences of DNA known as microsatellites. At locations along
the chromosomes where

Celebrate with tradition
The Victorian Age gave birth to many charming and romantic notions. One of these
was the tradition of pulling the “Cracker” at Christmas time. The “Cracker” was named
because of the cracks and popping sound it makes when the ends are pulled.
A London confectioner on holiday vacation in France was impressed by candy-makers custom of wrapping bon-bons in fancy papers with twisted ends. On his return home he
reproduced the idea, adding a few twists of his own. First a slip of paper was wrapped with
the candy, printed with a romantic verse, and a small “pop” charge was added to the pull
ends. With growing popularity of “crackers”, confectioners began to replace the bon-bons
with trinkets such as bracelets from Bohemia, fans from Japan, music pipes from France,
and little wooden barrels from America.
Festive “Crackers” began to appear in North America as immigrants brought holiday traditions from their homelands abroad. By the “Roaring Twenties”, crackers had
gained national popularity.
Because of material shortages and rationing in the U.S. during World War ll production of the treats ceased. The tradition held its place in Great Britain, but crackers would not
be produced again in North America until 1960.
All Through The House carries festive party crackers. See ad on page 20. “Crackers” add the finishing touch to every celebration. They are great for table decor, tree or gift
trim, stocking stuffers, or a parting gift to remember the day’s event.

tion among individuals. Variation is expressed in the form of
different sized alleles at these
microsatellite loci. Different
sized alleles in different individuals can then be used to identify
or exclude possible offspring at
a later date. “We will be using
up to 17 microsatellite loci to
monitor these fish,” said LutzCarrillo. “We have DNA from
the ShareLunker fish and their
male mates. Taken together, the
combinations of alleles at these
17 loci are virtually unique to
these individuals. This allows
us to use a technique analogous
to fingerprinting to identify specific fish except that the alleles,
unlike fingerprints, are passed
on to their offspring. When fish
are collected from these reservoirs at a later date, we will examine their DNA to determine if
they are possible offspring from
these ShareLunker crosses.”
“The study reservoirs
were selected by considering a
variety of factors,” said Mukhtar
Farooqi, a principal investigator in the study along with Michael Baird, Timothy Bister and
Thomas Hungerford. “The most
important criteria were habitat,
water quality, reservoir size and
sampling conditions. We also
considered the trophy history
of the lake as well as its forage
base and harvest regulations.”
Coded wire tags, tiny
pieces of stainless steel wire
0.25 mm in diameter and 1.1
mm long, are inserted using a
tag injector. The fish are then run
through a device that magnetically detects the tag. If a tag is
present, the fish falls into a holding tank. If no tag is detected,
the device swings a gate inside
to shunt the fish into a net so it
can be retrieved and tagged.
“The fish we tagged
last week will be sampled by
electrofishing in April 2009,”
Farooqi explained. “At the same
time, we will sample wild fish
of the same age from the reservoirs. Differences in length and
weight of the ShareLunker offspring and wild fish will provide
insight into the effectiveness of
TPWD’s OWR largemouth bass
selective breeding program.”
“Ultimately we will be
able to take a DNA sample from
a Budweiser ShareLunker and
determine that fish’s parents,”
said Allen Forshage, director of
TFFC.
Forshage also praised
the TFFC hatchery staff that
raised the fish. “The survival
rate of the fingerlings was high,
which reflects the months of
careful work of the biologists
and technicians at TFFC,” he
said.
The Budweiser ShareLunker program is made possible through support from Anheuser-Busch, Inc. Since 1991,
Anheuser-Busch, in partnership
with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, has contributed
millions of dollars in funding
to support conservation causes
and fishing, hunting and outdoor
recreation programs in Texas.

Annual Winter Trout
Stocking Begins Dec. 1
For an inexpensive, entry-level fishing experience the entire
family can enjoy, it doesn’t get much easier than winter rainbow trout
fishing in Texas.
Beginning Dec. 1 and continuing through March, the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department will stock upwards of 270,000 hatchery-reared rainbow trout at more than 100 sites across the state. Many
of the fish stockings will be conducted at small community fishing
lakes, state park lakes and popular river tailraces offering easy angling access.
TPWD has been stocking rainbow trout in small urban lakes,
state park lakes and popular river tailraces each winter since the
1970s, providing Texans a simple and economical opportunity to go
fishing.
Catching these hungry fish can be easy, making the experience ideal for both novice anglers and kids. The fish will bite almost
immediately after stocking and typically will take a variety of baits,
from whole kernel canned corn or commercial soft bait to artificial
flies and even small spinnerbaits.
Fishing gear can be as basic as an inexpensive spincast rod
and reel combo, a small plastic bobber, a fishing weight and a hook.
It’s also a good idea to carry along a pair of needle-nosed pliers to
help remove hooks, and a five gallon bucket, small ice chest or a fish
stringer to keep your catch. Be sure to keep fresh trout cold on ice or
refrigerated.
A list of stocking sites with detailed driving directions is
available on the TPWD Web site www.tpwd.state.tx.us. The posted stocking dates are the days the trout are available to the general
public. Many sites offer special events for youth prior to allowing
the public to fish and those are usually the day before. Folks should
check with local parks and recreation departments or water authorities for additional information.
While most sites get an annual dose of between 1,000–2,000
trout, popular fishing holes like the Guadalupe River below the
Canyon Reservoir dam which includes the tailrace receive multiple
stockings from December through March. As the only fishable place

Lewisville Lunker kicks off
BudweiserSharelunker Season
13.63-pound fish likely to be the new lake record.
Catching a lake record
largemouth bass from Lake
Lewisville appears to be easy—
it’s been done four times since
June 1.
Holding on to that record is
harder. The latest record—
pending until accepted—is also
the first Budweiser ShareLunker ever recorded from Lewisville.
Jon Babich of Lewisville caught
the 13.63-pound largemouth
while fishing for crappie on the
Lewisville Fishing Barge. The
fish was 24.25 inches long and
21 inches in girth.
Babich was fishing for crappie when he saw the big bass
come up and eat a crappie he’d
just thrown back. He pitched
a 3 1⁄4-inch Lunker City FinS Shad into the water, and she
took it.
If recent events are any indication, Babich had better enjoy holding the record while
he can. An even bigger fish is
probably out there just waiting
to be caught.
Professional angler Kevin
VanDam started the recordbreaking big bass boom on
Lake Lewisville June 1, when
he caught an 11.81-pound fish
during a tournament. That record stood only until July 17,
when Houston Rogers hooked a
12.23-pounder. Rogers held the
record just two weeks. Charles
Pratt caught his 12.67-pounder

year’s sales totals, generating
needed funds for the operation and upkeep of Texas state
parks. Through Oct. 29 of this
year, TPWD reported sales of
57,978 park passes, up from
sales this time last year.
“I can’t think of a better gift than that of the great

Walt Dabney, Texas state parks
director. “The brass-plated tree
ornament adds value to the deal

The month of
December has many fishing for
ideas, on what to buy friends
and family for Christmas. But
December can also be a great
fishing month.
This year around Lake
Fork the weather has been
so seasonable, by the afternoons we are in short sleeves.
This is not the normal. Usually,
December is cold and the fish
will be out deep.
There will still be plenty of fish in the shallow water.
For the shallow fish, spend your
time in the 8 to 15 foot range. It
is a little known fact, that bass
will stay shallow year round
even in the coldest times. I
have thought for years you had
to go deep to catch winter time
fish, but this is not true.
I am still a deep water
fisherman, but I will probe the
shallows with spinner baits,
lipless crank baits, and small
crank baits.
The main thing to remember, the fish are cold
blooded, they will slow down
and wont chase a bait to far.
They wont have to eat everyday as a small amount of food
will go a long way.
The lipless crank bait will be
the most fished bait from now
till the middle of March. This
bait will draw a strike when no
other bait will even get a sniff.
Chunk and wind over grass and
around flats. Cover plenty of
water, and when you catch a
fish, slow down and work the
area over good. Usually, there
wont be just one fish in the area.
The other fish may not bite, but
work the area over good and
even change to a slow moving
bait.
During the winter, I
watch many fishermen come
down a bank slinging and
winding. They catch a fish and
keep on going. They never
slow down and work and area,
they just keep on going.
I note the time of day,
and what the fish were holding
on. This will give me a tip to
start on tomorrow. Some times
the water will be a little warmer
and this will attract bait fish. I
still work the deep water and
look for bait fish with my electronics. When I find these, I
look for the fish arcs and drop
spoons, tail spinners, spinner
baits, drop shots, and jigs and
pigs.
Usually a vertical presentation
is the best approach. Again
work the baits slowly.
The crappie will start
showing up on the main lake
points and humps. There will
be small cities of boats up there,
so finding the area to fish will
be easy. Just remember! Don’t
go running up on the fishermen
and shut down, as many will
be anchored and you will wash
them off their spot. Shut down
out a ways and slowly idle up
slowly.

“The Little Paper With Big Bass Results”
Fishin Lake Fork with Jimmy Everett
December is here, this means
cold weather and cold water
temps. This will mean a couple
of different things for me, which
are extreme opposites. One is
to speed up, and the other is
slow down. One will be deep
while the other is shallow.
This time of year can
mean great quality and quantity
under the right conditions .
The colder weather will
bunch up the deep fish and can
make them easy to catch when
found.
It will also make the
grass become my main key for
shallow water fishing.
Shallow water fishing will be
good around any grass you can
find from the main lake. Stay
along the edges of the grass,
throwing a crawfish patterned
lipless rattling crank bait in half
to three quarter ounce. Throw
these baits in 3 to 4 feet of water, and work on a straight reel
back to the boat . Position your
boat around 8 feet of water for
some good results.
Another good shallow
water pattern will be fishing a
half ounce Strike Works Wood
Jig in black/blue or watermelon/red with a matching Mark
Pack pig claw or Gary Yamamoto craw worm. Flip these
baits around the edges of creek
channels located in 6 to 10 feet
of water. Stay in the creek and
flip in front of the boat to the
stumps lining the creek channel.
The Deep water bite
should remain good. The best
places will be humps, points,
ridges, and roadbeds located in
20 to 35 feet. Your electronics
will be a big key to how successful your day on the water might be. Watch for balls
of bait and fish stacked up on
the screen.
I have
been throwing very few baits
lately, and this is the rundown
of them. On my Carolina rigs,
I will throw a 5 to 7 foot leader
and a 1oz weight. Dragging
behind it on a 4/0 hook will
be a Lake Fork Magic Shad or
Zoom Fluke in albino, watermelon/red, or watermelon.
A drop shot will also
become a fish catching machine
in deep water. I rig mine up with
a half once weight with a 12 to
24 inch leader in-between my
hook. Keep it shaking, is the
best tip I can give you. A Gary
Yamamoto 5 inch cut tail worm
in watermelon/red or purple
with emerald flake.
It is also time for my
favorite weapon. A Grub or
the new Gary Yamamoto swim
bait in shad patterns or colors
on a 1⁄4one quarter ounce Gary
Yamamoto jig head. I fish it
on a jig head over deep water
schools of fish. I like to take
this bait and throw it out, let it
sink to the bottom, then rip it up
and let it swing back to you on
a taunt line. This is a great way
to put numbers of nice fish in
the boat.

Lewisville Lunker kicks off season
Contiued from page 7
July 31.
What is interesting is that the
Rogers fish was 29.75 inches
long. The longest ShareLunker
ever recorded, a 14.5-pounder
caught by Jeff Neighbors from
Lake Fork in 1988, stretched
the tape to only 28.5 inches.
And Barry St. Clair’s state record 18.18-pound fish, also
from Lake Fork, measured a
mere 25.5 inches long.
The heaviest fish are typically caught during the spring
spawning season, when the big
females are full of eggs. The
Neighbors fish weighed a little
more than half a pound per inch
of body length, while the St.
Clair fish weighed a whopping
0.71 pounds per inch. Multiplying those numbers times the
29.75-inch length of the Rogers fish gives a potential weight
range of 15 to 21 pounds.

28.5 inches.
There may not be a new state or
world record largemouth swim-
ming around in Lake Lewisville, but it’s almost a given
that a new lake record is. The
only questions are who will
catch her, and when.
Babich’s fish is number 392
in the Budweiser ShareLunker
program.
Since 1978 Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department has
stocked 2.3 million Florida
largemouth bass fry and fingerlings into Lake Lewisville.
The Budweiser ShareLunker program is made possible
through support from Anheuser-Busch, Inc. Since 1991, Anheuser-Busch, in partnership
with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, has contributed millions of dollars in funding to support conservation
causes and fishing, hunting and
outdoor recreation programs in
Texas.

“The Little Paper With Big Bass Results”
Jim’s corner article By Lake Fork guide Jim Reaneau
This months article is
going to cover low water conditions. Almost ever state has
had a drought condition. The
Lake Fork area, is 13 inches
behind in rain fall. Lake Fork is
currently 4 feet low.
Because of the way
they built the lake, we will always have a boat ramp to use.
The main concern is the water around the boat docks for
the home owners. Many home
owners leave their boats on
lifts, or pulled up on shore to
long. Soon they find out they
can’t get their boat out. Our
lake does not fall two feet over
night, so why this happens is
anybodies guess.
Now for some fishing
info. When the lakes are built,
many cover over old roadbeds
and fence rows, there are old
concrete slabs and farm ponds.
All these are fish attractants.
We all have learned this in our
fishing experiences. If you were
not present when a lake was
built, you can get your map out
when the water is low, and look
for these areas.
As lakes get older, the
timber starts to fall. When the
water drops, the stumps start
showing up, revealing the
above named areas.This is a
great time to mark these areas
with your GPS. This is also a
good time to brush up some
good spots, and when the water
gets back to normal this will be
a great fishing area.
The fish will also seek
the creek channels and stack
up. When the water is low you
can follow channels and find
the bends more readily. The
creeks will usually have some
big trees along the banks that
may have fallen and the stumps
are all that is left. Now you can
see them and follow the creek.
The bends will be where the
deepest water will usually be,
and this is the spot where the
fish will be.
Crank baits, Texas rig
worms, and jig & pig are great
tactics for catching these fish.
Some days the big trees or
stumps will hold the fish.
The maps will show
where old lakes or ponds were,
and the stumps around them
will be visible. Now you can
find the dams on the old lakes,
this is a key area. The fish will
seek the hump part of the dam,
as this will be a rise and will
attract the fish. Mark your map
as you find these areas.
Just because you don’t
catch fish right now, don’t give
up, when the water gets back to
normal, the fish may return to
these areas. Fish will seek the
deepest water available when
the water level is falling, so they
don’t get caught in the shallow. They will suspend around
deep water that is close to shallow water.
T h e
main key is to be careful when
you are motoring around in low
water conditions. Go slow in
fields and flats, as there may
be small humps and you could
run aground. Keep your depth
finders on so you can track the
bottom. When lakes get older
they also silt in and your creeks
and shallows will become a lot
shallower than when the lake
was first built, so when you get
to the back of creeks be watchful for very shallow water.

It is a good idea to get out with
your video camera and make
some movies about what you
find. This way you can find
these areas when the lake gets
back to normal.
Good Fishing and I
hope this helps a little to make
you a better fisherman.

Lake Fork Area News - 19
Trout stocking
in Texas where rainbow trout
can survive during the summer
months, the Guadalupe River will
get about 18,000 fish.
For the same reason,
special regulations have been
implemented along a 10-mile
stretch of the Guadalupe River
below the tailrace. For additional
details about the special harvest
regulations and the location of
that river stretch, please consult
the TPWD Outdoor Annual. The
special regulations zone does not
include the area immediately below Canyon Lake Dam. There, as
in other Texas waters, the daily
bag limit is five trout and there is
no minimum length.
A valid Texas freshwater fishing package is required to
fish for trout. Youth ages 16 and
younger and all anglers fishing
from the bank in state parks are
exempt from the fishing package
requirement.
Trout make ideal table fare and
are easily prepared. They are best
eaten fresh within two days of
the catch, but can also be frozen.
First, remove the entrails by making an incision with a sharp knife
along the length of the underside
of the fish and thoroughly wash
inside and out under running
water. Trout do not need to be
scaled. Season with salt and pepper, drizzle with olive oil and top
with a thin slice or two of lemon.
You can also season with your
favorite seafood spices. Wrap
the prepared fish individually in
aluminum foil and bake or grill
until done, usually no more than
4-8 minutes at 350 degrees (fish
flakes off easily with a fork when
properly cooked).
